A Chevy "service tire monitor system" warning can mean one of two things. The first is that your tire pressure is suboptimal and requires adjusting to manufacturer-recommended levels. We all know that COVID has been massively disruptive to manufacturing operations. COVID also has made introducing new models and mid-cycle enhancements (otherwise noted as MCE – where the model gets a facelift and minor changes but is not completely new) difficult to implement as well. For the OEM, a new model, for example, the 2021 Tahoe, is great for excitement and new features, and the elevated demand enables it to reduce incentives and improve profitability. But, making changes slows the flow of product from the plant as various operations must be refined and set up to build a different vehicle. When instead of doing an MCE, the changes are less numerous, but they still reduce output temporarily as the plant must adjust. COVID has resulted in the slowing execution of many plans, and Chevy’s MCE for the 2022 ChevroletSilverado 1500 has been impacted likewise.
According to GM Authority, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 will break cover at 4 AM EST on September 9th, 2021. GM Authority also relayed information about expected changes, none of which we can confirm as we do not know the exact changes. GM Authority notes “The updated 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 will feature a revised front fascia with new headlamps, a redesigned tailgate, and different taillights. Inside, the truck will receive an overhauled cabin with a new dash, center stack, and center console, a larger infotainment screen, and a digital gauge cluster/driver information center. The traditional column gear shifter will also be dropped in favor of a new electronic gear select system.”
That means we have about a month before we learn about the specifics of the new 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. Here is where the confusion is about to set in. They are going to start taking orders from dealers for the 2022 Silverado 1500 within a few weeks. What? How can dealers order something that hasn’t even been announced as to what it is? That is because we will be ordering a 2022 ChevySilverado 1500 LTD. Huh? What is an LTD? That is an abbreviation for Limited. In the past, Chevy has produced vehicles with the name Limited at the end to denote they are the old model getting built with the same model year as the new model. There was the 14 Impala Limited that was the same as the 13 Impala and nothing like the 14 Impala that was a complete redesign. That was just for fleet purposes. There is a 19 Silverado 1500 LD which was the 18 Silverado 1500 and not the new model style, but that was only done on double cabs.
In Chevy’s systems, they will have a different model code for the limited versus the newer MCE version. The way you will see this is through a slight change to the naming on websites and branding literature. You will see “Silverado 1500 LTD” on Monroney labels, website descriptions of the model, and the like. Let’s use the 2019 Silverado double cab for reference. In this screenshot from Cars.com, you can see a search for 2019 Silverado 1500 AND SILVERADO 1500 LD vehicles. The Silverado 1500 LD is the “limited” and only double cabs and looks like the 18 model year. While we are not positive the exact wording, our guess is you will see “Silverado 1500 LTD” in the search pane for 2022s that are pre-MCE and the regular “Silverado 1500” for 2022s that are post-MCE. And when you are shopping on a site for 2021 and 2022 Silverados, you will see Silverado for 2021 and Silverado LTD for the 2022s for quite a while. Here is a quick reference.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV resurrects GM’s midgate—a back-of-cab folding bulkhead to increase the length of the truck’s bed. This clever feature was last seen on the Chevrolet Avalanche, which went out of production after the 2013 model year.
Unlike the long-gone Avalanche, which was based on the Chevrolet Suburban, the Silverado EV won’t be based on GM’s popular conventional trucks. GM’s newest electric truck has a unified bed/cab structure and independent rear suspension, and will ride on the electric-vehicle-specific Ultium platform that underpins the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, among other future GM vehicles.
GM says that starting in spring 2023, the Silverado EV will be offered in fleet-oriented Work Truck (WT) trim starting under $40,000, with a $105,000 performance version—the RST—to debut later that year. Mainstream versions will fall somewhere within that wide price range.

GM has been stingy with details thus far, including when more mainstream versions of the Silverado EV will go into production and be available for sale. If it’s as good as it looks at first glance, its handy configurable bed storage and front trunk shown below (where the engine would be on a fossil fuel-powered pickup) will make it a versatile competitor to a number of other electric pickup trucks hovering on the brink of reality.
Unlike a conventional pickup truck—which has separate body and bed pieces that sit atop a ladder frame—the Silverado EVs chassis is built around the structure of its battery pack, and its bed and body form a seamless structure. The sail panel between the back of the passenger cabin and the top of the bed rail looks a lot like the one on the pickup truck version of the Hummer EV, although it hearkens back to the plastic-clad triangular sail panels, extending from the back of the cab to the top of the bed, that differentiated Avalanche pickups from regular Silverados years ago.
The front end is short, both to maximize the driver’s forward visibility and to increase legroom for the rear seat passenger, according to GM. The Silverado EV will come in only a crew cab configuration.
The bed measures 5-feet, 11-inches in length, but with the midgate open, and the optional configurable tailgate extended, that length increases to 10-feet, 10-inches—a notable competitive advantage.
The interior of the RST features a 17-inch LCD infotainment screen surrounded by trapezoidal styling flourishes and cladding consistent with Chevrolet’s other products, EV or not. The driver gets a configurable 11-inch instrument display and a full-color head-up display on the windshield. WT models get a smaller version of the infotainment screen.
Along with cargo-hauling capacity in the pickup bed, the Silverado EV will feature a front-mounted “frunk” for extra closed storage, although GM has not yet specified its volume. The midgate will fold into the cab, but will not impinge on back-row seating capacity when it’s not in use. No word on interior storage options such as the center console or underseat storage in the back row.
Like the GMC Hummer EV, the Silverado EV RST will come with four-wheel steering to improve maneuverability, as well as an adaptive air suspension system.
GM says the Silverado EV will include “a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety technologies,” and that the more expensive RST trim will come with a towing-compatible version of Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 has proved itself time and time again, and the 2022 model is no exception. The Silverado has earned countless accolades over the years, with critics lauding its dependability, low ownership cost, and higher-than-average resale value, but Chevy seemingly isn’t content to coast on past success. The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 not only doubles down in areas where the Silverado already excels but introduces some interesting new features that are sure to win over some new fans.
Technology is the watchword here, with Chevy turning to some intriguing new solutions to set the 2022 Silverado 1500 apart from the competition. In addition to this revamped approach to in-cabin infotainment, the pickup introduces a tweaked version of Chevy’s popular Super Cruise driver-assistance system designed specifically for the unique demands of the truck lifestyle. The 2022 Silverado is up for the challenge, with a 13.4-inch widescreen central display on all models at the LT trim level and above. The massive display is a significant upgrade from previous model years, which featured an 8-inch screen and 4.2-inch instrument cluster, and gives the Silverado an instant edge over many of its competitors in the full-size category. We should note that Silverados with the Work Truck, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss trims will retain the 7-inch display and 3.5-inch cluster they’ve featured in previous years.
The infotainment system features the usual suite of apps from Apple, Android, and Google, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google Assistant, Maps, and Play, but it’s the display’s size and user-friendly configuration that makes us take notice. The larger screen makes the system easier to navigate than some smaller displays, which can go a long way in preventing the sort of distracted driving that can result from fiddling with more cramped touchscreen controls. These digital controls encompass the left half of the display, easily within reach of most drivers, while the right side displays GPS route information, music selection, weather, or any number of other included apps.
The display includes the usual USB charging ports, but it’s another creature feature that really showcases the thought and attention put into making the Silverado’s infotainment system as convenient and familiar as possible. Including a physical home button might seem like a throwback, but as the iPhone’s haptic response home button has proven, there’s something very satisfying about that familiar clicking feeling.
Many automakers have gone touchscreen crazy in recent years, seemingly more focused on whether they could go fully digital than whether they should. While these touchscreens do hold some advantages in terms of customization, they’re not always the best choice due to their lack of immediate response, physical feedback, and screen sensitivity. The less time spent adjusting controls, the better, and this is especially true in a moving vehicle where that momentary delay could mean the difference between a fender bender and a full-on accident. The physical home button allows drivers to quickly navigate back to the home screen without having to worry about whether they pressed too softly, had wet hands, or were a little imprecise in hitting the icon.
The Silverado’s mammoth 13.4-inch display might get most of the headlines, but for our money, the digital instrument cluster is the most intriguing new inclusion for the 2022 model year. This customizable array of gauges, sensors, and feedback replace the instrument clusters of old, with the digital platform opening the door to some fun customization options. In addition to the standard mph, mileage, RPM, and fuel indicator, the digital instrument cluster can be set to display fuel efficiency, GPS, range, compass, and more. The design gives the pickup an almost high-performance feel, which is no coincidence, according to its designer. “It’s a more contemporary, refined design that elevates the premium nature of the interior,” said Alexandre Scartezini, Chevrolet Truck’s lead interior designer. “It’s also a more driver-oriented space that’s connected to our performance heritage, with a hint of Corvette influence in its design DNA.”
The system also comes with four preset layouts, each designed for specific driving scenarios. Are you going to be on the highway for most of the trip? A simple GPS displays everything you need without overwhelming you with a lot of extraneous info. Blazing a path for the first time and need all the visual cues you can get? Simply switch to another preset, and you’ll never lose the trail again. The cluster can also display the pickup’s current terrain mode, giving drivers the confidence to plow through adverse weather conditions. This approach allows the array of gauges to avoid a common pitfall in the design of many dashboard displays: too much info overwhelming the driver or an obnoxiously minimalist approach that’s sleek but ultimately useless.
The Silverado’s instrument panel is also the home of Chevy’s Super Cruise driver assistance feature, which makes its debut on the Silverado High Country trim package. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as this system offers much more than your standard cruise control. Super Cruise represents Chevy’s foray into the intriguing new world of hands-free automated driving, and though the system is still being developed, it can currently be used on over 200,000 miles of roads in both the U.S. and Canada.
The system employs a suite of technology to deliver both a hands and worry-free experience, using eye monitoring and radar-like scanning as safeguards. While automated driving is an exciting prospect, the technology is still in its fledgling stages, and as such, regulations still require drivers to keep their eyes on the road when using any hands-free driving technology. To this end, the Silverado employs a steering wheel-mounted camera to follow a driver’s eyes, activating a light-up strip set in the steering wheel and audio cue to get their attention should their gaze start to wander.
With the inclusion of these systems and more, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 continues to cement its reputation as a class leader. With nearly endless customization options, an advanced driver-assistance mode tailored to the pickup, and a performance-inspired instrument cluster, the Silverado pulls off a trick that too many auto manufacturers have trouble with: deploying technology in a logical, measured way that makes sense in the context of the vehicle itself. When it comes to finding a pickup truck, many consumers flock to the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Maybe it’s because the company claims it is the “strongest, most advanced,” or maybe it’s just because there aren’t a lot of options on the market. Either way, the Chevy Silverado 1500 is a disappointment in many people’s eyes. With complaints about the electrical system, structure, engine, powertrain and suspension, there’s so much that could go wrong behind the wheel of this truck.
With all the Chevy Silverado 1500 has to accomplish, an advanced electrical system is a must. However, customers are positive that this technology isn’t what it should be.
Here’s one example from an Edmunds review. “I have a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado and I have been to the dealership 3 times with issues with my check engine light coming on with less than 3000 miles on the truck. Each time I go it’s the same code. They tell me we could not find any issues so we just reset the light. I am sick of this truck I will be going back to the dealership in the morning due to the fact my check engine light is back on for the 4th time in less than 3 months.”
It seems nothing much has changed from previous models. In fact, the electrical systems were so poor on 2019 and 2020 trucks that class-action lawsuits were filed against GM. The 7-inch in-dash infotainment systems have been a major source of complaints, and it looks like the 2021 models will continue down the same path. It seems that GM doesn’t learn, no matter how many times the company’s wrists are slapped.
Here is an actual complaint logged with the NHTSA regarding 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Electrical System Problems:THIS 2021 SILVERADO HAND A COMPLETE ELECTICAL FAULURE LEAVING THE VEHICLE DEAD IN THE IN THE ROAD AT NIGHT. WE HAD NO POWER AT ALL, NO WARNING FLASHERS IN THE DARK AT 9:00 PM AT NIGHT. WE WERE ALMOST HIT BY A CAR COMING AROUND CONER AS WE BROKE DOWN AT THE INTERSECTION WERE NO STREET LIGHTS WERE. THIS TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 500 MILES ON IT AND HAS ALREADY HAD THE FULL ENGINE REPLACED, PROBLEMS WITH THE INFOTANMENT SYSTEM AND NOW A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL SHUTDOWN. WE WERE UNABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO DO ANYTHING AND WAITED FOR TWO HOURS IN THE ROAD FOR A WREAKER TO ARRIVE.
Yet, that’s what customers are talking about, such as in this Edmunds review. “Have a new 2021 Silverado and engine stared with a ticking sound then went to a knocking sound then every light on the dash came on Check engine traction control brakes transmission everything so we brought it to the dealer they said it was a bad lifter her car is been there for five weeks now I know there’s more issues with the car than that lifter the sound of the engine was so bad.”
GM is fully aware that there are engine problems. The automaker even issued Service Bulletin #PIP5776C, which discusses a misfiring condition caused by lifters that come apart. To fix the problem, the four lifters and the lifter guide must all be replaced. This shouldn’t be occurring on newer trucks, especially at this price point. Without a functioning engine, the Silverado 1500 is nothing more than a glorified wheelbarrow.
Here is an actual complaint logged with the NHTSA regarding 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Engine Problems:The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would not accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact also stated that a loud knocking sound was coming from the bottom of the vehicle while reversing. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the timing belt needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500.
The powertrain is another system that works in conjunction with the engine to provide moving force to the truck. However, it’s also another critical area that is causing complaints.
Here’s one more Edmunds review worth mentioning. “Started noticing an intermittent vibration/shutter at about 4,000 miles when gently giving it gas. It has about 9,000 miles on it now and does it all the time. It’s a 2.7l 4cyl. Has been to 3 dealers, 1 dealer twice. They magically say there’s nothing wrong with it. One dealer did say yea I noticed it but, that’s because it’s a 4cyl. Every person that rides in it asks me why it’s doing that. I feel like I’m being lied to by the dealers just so they don’t have to fix it. I absolutely hate driving this truck!”
Again, issues are being dealt with by GM, but not in the way owners wish. Service Bulletin #PIP5794A discusses the shudder that is occurring with the truck. However, GM states it is just coming from the camshaft actuator system and is “mistaken for a transmission issue.” Basically, the automaker is saying, “nothing to see here.”
One NHTSA complaint states, “The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while in the vehicle, the contact had dropped his bank card in between their seat and center console. When they reached for the card, they felt a sharp object in between the seat and the center console which caused the contact to cut their right hand which caused the contact to receive 7 stitches. Medical attention was needed for the injury.”
It turns out that this isn’t the only seat-related issue. NHTSA Campaign Number 20V792000 talks about a recall where over 600,000 vehicles may have unsecured seat belt brackets that fail to restrain occupants. Shortly after that recall was issued, NHTSA Campaign Number 20V811000 was also released saying that affected vehicles include the wrong bolts in the seat belt fastening location, also making it more challenging to restrain passengers. To further prove how defective this truck is, just take a look at NHTSA Campaign Number 20V684000. This recall points to the overcuring of tires used on the Silverado, leading to tread and belt loss. Basically, there’s no part of this truck that can be relied upon. Maybe it’s time for the company to get back to what made it “like a rock.” Those were the good old days when trucks meant business.
Read this NHTSA review, “The antilock brake system (ABS), brakes and electronic stability control system (ESC) might not illuminate. This could cause the driver to not know if any of these systems are inoperable.”
With previous Silverado models, class-action lawsuits were filed regarding the handling of the trucks. Many customers found that the vehicles would vibrate and shake when hitting higher speeds, such as those occurring on the highway. It became such a prevalent occurrence that the condition was named the “Chevy Shake.” Based on what is seen so far, the 2021 Silverado will be following suit and shaking all the way to more lawsuits.
