This article is an attempt to bring together in one place all the knowledge currently available about the common problem of faulty gauges in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 (plus some early model 2007) GM vehicles. The most common instrument cluster problem seen on the 03-06 GMs is faulty analog gauges. This is usually the first gauge problem the vehicle owner sees and is experienced as a stuck, sticky or jumpy gauge needle. Occasionally the needle will reset itself temporarily after the ignition switch has been turned on and off a few times but soon returns to it’s erratic behavior. In some cases the needle will “peg out” to the fully counter clock wise or clock wise position. In some cases the needle will move smoothly but will be reading noticeably higher or lower than normal at all points. This problem typically starts with just one gauge but over time all the analog gauges will start displaying the same symptoms. Ultimately all gauges will fail if not repaired.

The current and only GM authorized replacement is Switec brand, part number X27.168 (this replaces previous part numbers xc5.168, x15.168 and X25.168). These GM stepper motors are not available from GM dealers or retail parts stores such as O’Reilly’s, Autozone or others. Be aware of generic brand stepper motors produced in China, numerous problems have been seen with these aftermarket motors.

The next most common problem seen on GM instrument clusters are failing digital displays. This problem is unrelated to the stepper motor problem but is often seen in the same clusters. Most GM gauge clusters of this time frame have two digital displays – the odometer and the gear indicator (commonly called the PRNDL screen). Either one or both screen will typically be affected.

This issue is most often cause by a failing power supply circuit on the circuit board which requires either replacement components or a solder re-flow. It appears that the circuit board was laid out in a way that caused over heating in certain areas which results in component failure and/or solder joint failure. Once the joint or component has failed power to the digital displays is lost causing a dead display or power is reduced causing a dim display.

This problem is typically (but not always) seen in conjunction with an instrument cluster that will not power on or has been displaying intermittent power failure. This issue is often caused by solder failure and/or surface insulation resistance failure on the circuit board. Most instances can be repaired and this is included as part of the regular rebuild service.

This odometer screen issue is seen as the word ERROR being displayed on the odometer screen instead of the vehicle’s mileage reading. This is a memory chip/software problem and requires chip replacement and advanced reprogramming to correct. I can repair this issue with our repair service for 03-06 Silverado, Suburban, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Avalanche and Escalade models only.

Battery drain from the gauge cluster can be caused by phantom warning lights (ABS, high beam indicator, etc) coming on in the gauge cluster even when the vehicle is powered down. Also the gauge cluster can fail to go into “sleep mode” after shutting down the vehicle as it is designed to do. If the vehicle is not driven for a few days either problem can drain the battery. Most instances can be repaired and this is included as part of the regular rebuild service.

GM dealers do not offer repair of electronics but they do offer replacement. However, no newly manufactured replacement instrument clusters exist any longer for 03-06 GM vehicles. GM will replace instrument clusters with used instrument clusters that have been rebuilt when a replacement is required. They then send your old instrument cluster to their 3rd party repair partner to be rebuilt and sold to the next customer needing it. Because they are replacing your entire instrument cluster with a different unit they must re-program the replacement unit so that your odometer mileage will display correctly. (GM vehicle mileage is stored inside the instrument cluster, not in the vehicle computer.) Because of this re-progaming and labor to remove/re-install this option is the most expensive.

Used instrument clusters are typically available at any number of salvage yards but there are several problems with this solution. First, any used instrument cluster will have the older generation of stepper motors and is likely to have failing gauges at the time of purchase. Salvage yards can’t fully test instrument clusters and typically electronics are sold “As Is” making a return/refund unlikely. Second, when you install a used instrument cluster it’s odometer will display the mileage from the vehicle it came out of, not your vehicle’s mileage. This requires a trip to the dealer for mileage re-programming.

At home repair is possible in some cases but requires experience with delicate circuit board component de-soldering and soldering. It’s not recommended to attempt these kinds of repairs without previous experience as damage to the electronics is common. This can require replacement of the whole instrument cluster costing more than a professional repair would have in the first place. This section outlines the common questions and issues with individual gauges and is written specifically for Silverados but these issues are common to most all GMs of this era listed in the beginning of this article.

GMs of this era also suffer from faulty fuel level sending units inside the fuel tank, this is a very common problem just like fuel gauges not working. If your gas gauge is the only gauge not working it’s recommended to diagnose the fuel level sending unit first as a possible cause of faulty fuel level readings on the gas gauge. This sending unit is part of the larger fuel pump assembly. If the sending unit checks out then you know the gas gauge is bad and needs rebuilt. However, if you have a bad gas gauge and also other instrument cluster problems you may prefer to have the instrument cluster fully rebuilt first and go from there.

If your 2003, 2004, 2005 or 2006 Silverado oil pressure gauge pegged out, has unusual fluctuations in it’s readings or reads high it can be caused by one of two problems. The first common cause is a faulty oil pressure sensor which is mounted on the engine. This is yet another common issue with 03-06 Silverados. Replacement sensors are fairly cheap and are widely available online. If your oil pressure gauge is the only gauge not working it’s recommended to diagnose the oil pressure sending unit first as a possible cause of oil pressure gauge fluctuations. If the oil pressure sending unit checks out then you know the oil pressure gauge is bad and needs rebuilt. However, if you have a bad oil pressure gauge and also other instrument cluster problems you may prefer to have the instrument cluster fully rebuilt first and go from there.

Silverado speedometer problems are some of the most common ones reported as speedometer problems are pretty difficult to ignore or work around. You might be curious if your Silverado speedometer problems may be caused by a faulty speed sensor or speedometer cable. Since these instrument clusters are fully electronic there is no traditional speedometer cable as there used to be in older vehicles so that rules that out. The speed sensors in modern vehicles are actually very reliable and rarely go out, but it is possible. So as a test to know if your speed sensor may be the cause of your speedometer problems you simply need to pay attention to how your automatic transmission is behaving. The auto tranny depends on the signal from the speed sensor to determine shift points and shift hardness so if your tranny is still shifting like normal you can be sure your speed sensor is not the cause of any speedometer gauge problems you’ve observed. Ruling out the speed sensor you can be certain you need speedometer repair to fix the issue. If your Silverado tachometer quit working you can be certain that the cause is a bad gauge in the instrument cluster caused by a failing stepper motor.

If you have a temp gauge not working or reading up and down you should first make sure you have plenty of coolant in your radiator of course but baring that the only likely cause on a Silverado would be a failing stepper motor on the temperature gauge which requires gauge repair.

Silverado 2500, 3500 and 1500HD models got a factory transmission temperature gauge from the factory while all other models did not. The transmission temperature gauge suffers from the same tendency to fail as all the other gauges and again will be caused by a failing stepper motor. Light duty trucks can be upgraded with a transmission temperature gauge if you want to monitor your transmission temps during towing or hauling. There are two ways to accomplish this. First you can install an instrument cluster out of a truck that has the trans temp gauge and it will be fully functional in your vehicle because all Silverados (as well as Suburbans, Sierras, Tahoes, Avalanches) came pre-wired and have a temp sensor already installed in the transmission right from the factory. This solution will require the replacement instrument cluster to be re-programmed so that the odometer displays your vehicles mileage instead of the vehicle the cluster came out of. The mileage is stored inside each clusters memory not in the vehicles computer. The second and perhaps better option is to have a factory transmission temperature gauge installed into your original instrument cluster. This can be done during other repair work to the cluster or as a stand alone upgrade. Re-programming of the instrument cluster is necessary to make the new gauge functional and should be included as part of the gauge upgrade service. Because of this at home installation of a factory trans temp gauge is not feasible.

Yes, GM vehicles of this generation will still start and run like normal with the instrument cluster removed and it will not harm the vehicle or the gauge cluster in any way.

If you have your gauge cluster rebuilt it will not need to be re-programmed. However, if you replace your original gauge cluster with another one then that one will need to be re-programmed otherwise it’s odometer display will read incorrectly. It will read the mileage of the vehicle that that gauge cluster was taken from. The odometer reading is stored inside the instrument cluster not the vehicle’s computer.

Just purchased a 2016 Sierra on Saturday and have about 400 miles on it. No problems until now. I decided to try the onstar app and used the app to unlock the doors. When I proceeded to start the engine the GMC logo came on the screen and then the touch screen goes blank. The hard buttons do not work also. I can however control the radio through steering wheel. The screen does flicker one ina while with the XM radio screen saying something about account ID. It is also changing radio stations randomly. It has been over 3 hours now and I have tried to restart multiple times with no luck. Anyone have any suggestions? I would hate to have to bring to dealer so soon after purchasing.

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV isn"t the first electrified pickup on the block. It"s not even the first to come from the General Motors family, but by the numbers, it just might be the most significant of them all. Looking beyond the stats, the Silverado EV is packed with all kinds of clever features that truck fans should love. And it doesn"t look bad, either.

Let"s start with the figures, because they"re impressive. Chevrolet estimates 400 miles of range on a single charge thanks to the largest Ultium battery pack created thus far. Dual motors turn all four wheels with as much as 664 horsepower (495 kilowatts) and over 780 pound-feet (1,063 Newton-meters) of torque. Engage Wide Open Watts (yes ... Meanwhile, the RST dishes up features such as rear-wheel steering, automatic adaptive air suspension, Super Cruise, and a configurable pickup bed with something called a Multi-Flex Midgate. Here"s where we"ll address the elephant in the room, because we know some of you are seeing shades of Chevrolet Avalanche in the Silverado EV"s design.

Inside the cabin, you"ll find more familiar-yet-different design cues. Digital displays dominate both trims, though the RST wields a massive 17.0-inch center screen that stretches to an 11-inch digital instrument display. If that"s not enough information for the driver, the RST also offers a heads-up display with a field-of-view spanning 14 inches. The WT isn"t quite as elaborate – Chevrolet isn"t ready to share such details on the entry-level truck – but it boasts its own pair of digital screens.

Since there"s no gasoline engine up front, the Silverado EV brings additional storage in the form of a locking eTrunk. The space is configurable to accommodate specific items, and on the RST, a modular console inside the cabin offers nearly seven gallons of storage. Be it WT or RST, all Silverado EVs are crew cab only with enhanced interior space for taller adults to sit comfortably – front or back. Credit for that goes to the ground-up design that makes full use of GM"s Ultium platform, pushing front seats further forward with rear seats further back.

As such, the Silverado EV is a notable departure from its combustion-powered family in terms of style and technology. Both RST and WT trims benefit from a more aerodynamic body versus the standard Silverado, and each features the PowerBase charging system with 10 outlets and 10.2kW of electric power. That system can power tools, toys, or an entire house if need be. The Silverado EV can also charge other EVs, just like a certain Blue Oval competitor.

Don"t get impatient, because Silverado EV production is still over a year away. Chevrolet"s current plan has the Silverado EV WT arriving in the spring of 2023, with the RST following in the fall. It won"t be any RST either, but a fully-optioned First Edition that Chevrolet says will cost $105,000, not including a destination charge of $1,695. Meanwhile, the WT will start at $41,595 (including destination) though Chevy doesn"t specify if that includes the 400-mile range battery. Once production is rolling, additional Silverado EV trims spanning a price range from $40,000 to over $80,000 will follow, with at least one being a Trail Boss.

Chevy"s big pickup trucks—the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD—are getting refreshed for the 2024 model year. Along with new facial features, most trim levels benefit from a flashier interior design that first debuted on the half-ton Silverado about a year ago. The improvements to the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks are more than skin deep, though.

Sure, the facelift and redesigned cabin help Chevy"s heavy-duty pickups stay looking fresh, but the bottom line is that the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are built for work duty. That"s where their updated powertrains come into play. The standard gas-fed 6.6-liter V-8 is unchanged, meaning it makes the same 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque as its predecessor. However, it now pairs with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a six-speed automatic. Chevy says the gasser"s new gearbox helps the engine make better use of its peak power. For 2024, gas-burning Silverado HDs also have a higher Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR), which rises from 24,000 to 26,000 pounds.

The optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 continues with the same Allison 10-speed automatic, but its output gets a significant uptick. It now makes 470 horsepower (up from 445) and 975 pound-feet of torque (up from 910). Chevy says the increases result from updates to the control architecture, combustion system, and turbocharger, which are also said to help provide up to 25 percent more low-end torque and improve efficiency. However, we don"t know how the updates will affect fuel economy since the trucks are exempt from EPA testing and the company isn"t currently sharing estimates. What we do know is that the 2024 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD still have max tow ratings of 22,500 and 36,000 pounds, respectively.

For 2024, the supersize Silverados all wear new mugs, from the base-level Work Truck to the top-of-the-line High Country. Along with the newly designed grille and C-shaped LED lighting elements, the LTZ and High Country trim levels feature new dual-projector headlights with animated sequences for when the driver approaches or walks away from the trucks. Chevy also supplies the "24 Silverado HD with new wheel options, including chrome 20-inch wheels for the LTZ as well as polished 18-inchers and all-terrain tires for the dual-rear-axle 3500HD. Plus, a set of 20-inch off-road tires can now be had with certain packages. The Midnight Edition, a blacked-out appearance package, is also now available on the High Country for the first time.

Inside, heavy-duty Silverados adopt a new dashboard design with prominent digital displays. While the updated layout and tech features aren"t offered on the Work Truck or Custom trim levels, they"re standard on the LT model and up. The setup includes a configurable 12.3-inch gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google-based software and apps. The updated interior also brings a revised center console with a wireless charger and more space for cupholders. The fanciest Silverado models have real leather-wrapped surfaces and genuine wood accents. Exclusively on the High Country, there"s a new Nightshift Blue interior option with all the top-notch materials.

The Silverado HD trucks also benefit from better driver assists. The list includes adaptive cruise control that works while pulling a trailer, and the blind-spot monitor now has an extended range while trailering. Plus, there"s a new alert that lets users know if they exceed the truck"s GCWR, and the available camera view that uses technology to essentially make a trailer transparent has been enhanced to work with fifth-wheel and gooseneck setups.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD will go on sale in the first half of 2023. The company says it"ll share pricing closer to their on-sale date. Chevy also today announced that the heavy-duty Silverado will be getting a version of the off-road-ready ZR2 model for the first time ever, but it"ll launch sometime after the regular trucks.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV is a battery electric full-size pickup truck to be manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced in January 2022, the Silverado EV will go on sale in 2023 for the 2024 model year in the North American market.

Despite using the Silverado nameplate, the vehicle does not share its underpinnings with the ICE-powered Silverado, as it is built on a narrower version of the dedicated electric platform used by the GMC Hummer EV. It is the first Chevrolet-branded electric pickup truck after the experimental S-10 EV.

The Silverado EV was introduced at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 5, 2022. Instead of using the existing Silverado platform, it uses the electric-only BT1 platform with an Ultium battery. While the wheelbase and overall length are similar to the ICE-powered Silverado, the proportions are significantly altered which enables it to adopt a more aerodynamic exterior design and a forward-shifted cab to increase interior space.

The last option, which allows Siri when locked, is often disabled for many iPhone users and is usually the main reason behind CarPlay not working. Make sure it is enabled.

If your CarPlay is connected wirelessly via Bluetooth, make sure it is switched on. Usually, the reason behind CarPlay not working is that the Bluetooth connection is not turned on. So please turn it on, and while doing this, make sure you are removing other connected devices from the list.

This was my second radio, first one didn"t even light up. This one didn"t have any of the Logo"s as advertised. It doesn"t work with the steering wheel like advertised and the navigation goes into a side version until you go through the menu to get it right. The voice guidance is set up for European so I have to explain what a motor way is to my 7 year old. The volume control is erratic and hard to adjust, the signal from the radio is inconsistent and I haven"t even been able to hook up the camera yet. not to happy, I have an extensive background in low voltage and being told that you need to locate a wire in your steering wheel (usually blue) and connect a wire from your steering wheel to the positive input of to get your steering wheel functions programmed is not a good practice from a manufacture.
