With the Kiox 300, installing the display on your e-bike has never been easier. This is because the Bosch Smart System Display is simply plugged in between the motor and the Bosch LED Remote. Yes, eBike Connect supports both routable as well as non-routable GPX tours. First, the desired GPX file must be imported into the eBike Connect online portal or app. The routes are automatically transferred to Kiox at the next synchronization. The following restriction applies here: in the case of non-routable tours, information on the distance to the destination and reaching the destination is not displayed.

That doesn’t match the desires of tech-savvy urban cyclists who buy ebikes. Bosch has a pair of solutions, one for rugged mountain biking, the other for everyday commuters. I put them through their paces during a press event held in Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas.

Serious off-road bikers should look for Kiox, an onboard computer with a rectangular, full-color 1.9-inch display. The screen’s not large, but it’s bright, covered with Gorilla Glass, and has an anti-glare finish that ensures the display is easy to see even at high noon on a bright summer day.

The Kiox computer itself, including the display, is removable thanks to its magnet attachment system. This has two benefits. First, you can take the screen with you to guard against theft or vandalism. Second, the onboard computer can pop off on impact. That can save the screen by letting it get out of the way instead of taking the full force of a crash.

Like most onboard computers, the Kiox can display a wide variety of fitness data. It can also sync with Bluetooth-enabled heart rate monitors for accurate training data. Bluetooth connectivity can also be used to sync data with various apps.

Kiox isn’t new for CES 2020, but you likely haven’t used it yet. Few electric bikes in the U.S. offer it yet. It now has a Lock function, which deactivates the motor when the onboard computer is disconnected. There’s also now an ABS light for bikes with that feature.

While Bosch says Kiox is targeted at “sporty riders,” I think it’s great for everyone. The screen isn’t large, but it’s bright, sharp, and colorful. It’s also very easy to read. I rode a bike with Kiox on a sunny day in the Nevada desert, yet never had the slightest trouble reading the screen. In fact, it’s clearer than the black-and-white LCDs I’ve used.

Kiox is exactly what I’d like to see every e-bike come with, and a major leap beyond the lame black-and-white LCDs that are still so common on electric bikes. If you’re interested, you can find Kiox on select e-bikes from several companies including Electra and Riese & Müller (two brands I rode at the press event).

The Bosch SmartphoneHub addresses those problems with a clamp that’s built into the handlebars. It provides a secure hold on the phone in landscape orientation. Plus, the SmartphoneHub has a USB port that can provide power to the phone, so you don’t have to worry about running out of battery life.

Bosch designed the Hub to work with the Cobi.Bike app which, once launched, does exactly what you’d hope an app for cyclists would. You can use it to view your riding stats, of course. But you can also use it for navigation, to call contacts, or view weather predictions.

The SmartphoneHub is meant to be used with your phone, but it also has a 1.52-inch black-and-white LCD. This screen sits beneath where you clamp the phone, so it’s only visible if you don’t connect it. This is the backup screen. If you don’t have your phone on you, the built-in LCD can display basic information like speed and range remaining.

I tried the SmartphoneHub alongside Kiox during my 13-mile press ride. The Hub works like a charm. I’ve never had much luck using cycling apps to track my fitness data. They often prove finicky or inaccurate. The SmartphoneHub and the Cobi.Bike app suffered none of those problems. The app was fast, responsive, and easy to control. My effort was accurately portrayed in RPMs, watts, and calories burned because the app’s data comes directly from the bike.

And yet, I still preferred the Kiox. For all the Hub’s strengths, it couldn’t defeat a basic problem that exists on every phone. Glare. Placing a large smartphone screen between your handlebars is little better than strapping a mirror in front of you. The sunny Moab desert often made the smartphone display annoying to read, even at the display’s maximum brightness.

Kiox had none of those issues. The 1.9-inch screen was small, but it displayed everything I needed to know. I also like the smaller screen’s lack of distractions. The information I need is available at a glance, but the screen doesn’t dominate the space in front of me. I can concentrate on enjoying the ride.

Kiox and SmartphoneHub are available now on select electric bikes. I’m hopeful more companies selling e-bikes in America will pick them up. They give e-bikes the modern, feature-packed displays they deserve.

Bosch recently sent us a bike with the prototype of their new Kiox display unit to test. It is their first full-color display, with tons of options and many ways to display a plethora of information. It’s compact, more like the Purion but made to be center-mounted.

One thing to note is that currently it isn’t available as an aftermarket option for Bosch-powered bikes. It has to be wired in from the start, so if you want one, you’ll need to buy a bike that comes with it.

It is held onto the stem-mounted bracket by a magnet and clicks in place very easily. It can pop out, but we took the bike it was mounted to off of some big drops and it never fell off. The advantage of this setup is that if you do crash, the display can pop off the mount to avoid damage. The glass covering this display is Corning Gorilla glass, which is shatter- and scratch-resistant. It’s also anti-reflective, making it easier to read in bright sunlight, and Bosch has carefully designed the mount to hold the display at the optimal angle for easy reading.

Within the menus, you can set the brightness manually or let the display sense light levels and automatically adjust brightness. We love this feature; auto seems to be perfect, even when mountain biking, and dodging in and out of trees and in bright sunlight.

Bosch finally got in a production unit just before we went to press with this issue, and they let us try it. It delivers on every promise the prototype made!

There are eight different screens that can display just the information you want for whatever you’re doing. On all screens you can tell what mode you’re in, your speed in miles or kilometers per hour, and the percentage of battery left. Power Assist mode changes color as you go up or down.

The first screen shows what is connected, via Bluetooth, including your heart rate monitor and your phone (there’s an app coming to work with the display).

The second screen is likely what Bosch expects you’ll keep the display on most of the time. It shows a curved graphic that shows both your own leg power (wattage), as well as the amount of power assistance the motor is supplying.

The third screen shows clock and range, and that range changes depending on what power assist mode you’re in. Bosch compares the battery level to the last 1.5 miles you’ve ridden to figure out your range. If you’ve been climbing a lot and using higher assist levels, that number will be much lower than if you’d been descending and not using as much power.

The fourth screen shows trip distance in miles and ride time in minutes. You can set preferences to reset this data every day, every four hours or to never reset it, depending on your preferences. The fifth screen shows rider input in watts, as well as cadence. Bosch CX motors typically cut off at 120 rpm, but with this setup, as long as we didn’t exceed 19.5 mph, the motor didn’t cut even when we wound the thing up above 140 rpm. Interesting, but not something most riders would ever do.

We used an old Polar H7 chest strap heart rate monitor that we had to dust off and put in a fresh battery. We weren’t sure it would pair with the Kiox, but it paired instantly through the menus. We really liked the heart rate feature, especially the quad screen with all this information available at a glance.

There’s a micro USB port on the front of the display that can be used for diagnostics (performed at your local Bosch bike shop dealer) and upgrades, as well as can be used to charge your phone. The latter can come in handy if you’re on a long ride and using your phone for navigation. You will likely need a custom cable for your phone, and the charge output is 5 watts at 1 amp, so it won’t charge your phone quickly, but it will slow charge it.

It seems there’s no end to the possibilities the Kiox might have with future firmware updates. They could add additional screens or allow customization of existing ones.

The Kiox is our new favorite display. Bosch has taken what they’ve learned from the Intuvia an Purion displays and created something even better. If you want training tools for training for any sport, this is a game-changer.
