Bosch recently sent us a bike with the prototype of their new Kiox display unit to test. It is their first full-color display, with tons of options and many ways to display a plethora of information. It’s compact, more like the Purion but made to be center-mounted.
One thing to note is that currently it isn’t available as an aftermarket option for Bosch-powered bikes. It has to be wired in from the start, so if you want one, you’ll need to buy a bike that comes with it.
It is held onto the stem-mounted bracket by a magnet and clicks in place very easily. It can pop out, but we took the bike it was mounted to off of some big drops and it never fell off. The advantage of this setup is that if you do crash, the display can pop off the mount to avoid damage. The glass covering this display is Corning Gorilla glass, which is shatter- and scratch-resistant. It’s also anti-reflective, making it easier to read in bright sunlight, and Bosch has carefully designed the mount to hold the display at the optimal angle for easy reading.
Within the menus, you can set the brightness manually or let the display sense light levels and automatically adjust brightness. We love this feature; auto seems to be perfect, even when mountain biking, and dodging in and out of trees and in bright sunlight.
Bosch finally got in a production unit just before we went to press with this issue, and they let us try it. It delivers on every promise the prototype made!
There are eight different screens that can display just the information you want for whatever you’re doing. On all screens you can tell what mode you’re in, your speed in miles or kilometers per hour, and the percentage of battery left. Power Assist mode changes color as you go up or down.
The first screen shows what is connected, via Bluetooth, including your heart rate monitor and your phone (there’s an app coming to work with the display).
The second screen is likely what Bosch expects you’ll keep the display on most of the time. It shows a curved graphic that shows both your own leg power (wattage), as well as the amount of power assistance the motor is supplying.
The third screen shows clock and range, and that range changes depending on what power assist mode you’re in. Bosch compares the battery level to the last 1.5 miles you’ve ridden to figure out your range. If you’ve been climbing a lot and using higher assist levels, that number will be much lower than if you’d been descending and not using as much power.
The fourth screen shows trip distance in miles and ride time in minutes. You can set preferences to reset this data every day, every four hours or to never reset it, depending on your preferences. The fifth screen shows rider input in watts, as well as cadence. Bosch CX motors typically cut off at 120 rpm, but with this setup, as long as we didn’t exceed 19.5 mph, the motor didn’t cut even when we wound the thing up above 140 rpm. Interesting, but not something most riders would ever do.
We used an old Polar H7 chest strap heart rate monitor that we had to dust off and put in a fresh battery. We weren’t sure it would pair with the Kiox, but it paired instantly through the menus. We really liked the heart rate feature, especially the quad screen with all this information available at a glance.
There’s a micro USB port on the front of the display that can be used for diagnostics (performed at your local Bosch bike shop dealer) and upgrades, as well as can be used to charge your phone. The latter can come in handy if you’re on a long ride and using your phone for navigation. You will likely need a custom cable for your phone, and the charge output is 5 watts at 1 amp, so it won’t charge your phone quickly, but it will slow charge it.
It seems there’s no end to the possibilities the Kiox might have with future firmware updates. They could add additional screens or allow customization of existing ones.
The Kiox is our new favorite display. Bosch has taken what they’ve learned from the Intuvia an Purion displays and created something even better. If you want training tools for training for any sport, this is a game-changer.
With the Kiox 300 retrofit kit, you can retrofit your Bosch Smart System e-bike with the practical display. The kit includes all parts for a successful conversion - the Bosch Kiox 300 display, the display mount, a Bosch Smart System display cable and, if required, the matching Kiox 300 single-arm bracket. To retrofit, attach all parts to your e-bike and connect the Smart System Display to your Bosch LED Remote control unit on the handlebar. Now your new Kiox 300 display is ready for use and you always best informed about your e-bike.
With the introduction of the smart system in 2022, Bosch has made extensive changes to its e-bike system. Almost all components and parts have been adapted and optimized. The biggest technical innovation here is that the central control of the e-bike now runs via the Bosch LED remote handlebar control unit. This means that you can now operate your Bosch e-bike without a separate display. But if you do not want to do without the convenience and extensive status information, there is the Kiox 300 retrofit kit. With just a few simple steps, you can thus attach the popular Bosch display.
For the conversion, you only need to attach the Kiox 300 to your e-bike and switch between the e-bike drive and LED remote with the display cables. As a first step, mount the Bosch Smart System Display mount to your bracket, if applicable to the included 1-arm bracket. Depending on how you want to mount the Kiox 300, you will need a different display mount. Mounting in front of the handlebar - you need the mount with cable exit at the back. Mounting behind or above the handlebar - you need the mount with cable exit in front. Now you can mount, for example, the one-arm holder from the Kiox 300 conversion set. Now take the existing display cable from the control unit and plug it into the Kiox 300 mount. Now use the 30cm display cable from the conversion kit to reconnect the display holder to the LED Remote. The assembly is now complete and the Kiox 300 is ready for use. For ideal attachment to any e-bike, the Bosch Smart System display cable is available in different lengths, only the 300mm version is included in the set.
The high-resolution e-bike display from Bosch impresses with its high-quality workmanship and extensive functions. Here you will find all the important information about your e-bike such as battery status, range, selected support, speed and much more. The Kiox 300 display is also operated via your LED remote on the handlebar. So you always have your e-bike firmly under control and are still perfectly informed. With a small locking plate, the Kiox 300 can also be protected from easy removal from the mount. However, a charging function for smartphones is not provided.
eBikers can now customise the status bar: Battery charge level, time or current speed. Can all be adjusted with ease under "Settings" and the display on the screen can be optimised.
In addition to the acoustic and visual responses from the LED remote, the Kiox 300 indicates whether eBike Lock is activated when the eBike is switched on. The unlocked screen only appears when the smartphone with the matching eBike Flow app account is within range and has been recognised as the key, and then the ride can begin.
4. Easy to read, smart designSmall but surprising. Kiox 300 scores highly for its compact size and always fully readable colour display. The display is protected against water splashes and dust. It is easy to use with plenty of visual support.
The walk assistance function is helpful on hilly climbs and can be activated via the LED remote. Kiox 300 provides clear, visual guidance for intuitive operation. The display shows the remaining range for all riding modes, so that eBikers can select the right riding mode to reach their destination.
For optimum readability during a ride, the display mount allows the display to be individually positioned on the handlebar. The angle of the display can also be adjusted.
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. (BRAIN) — Bosch has updated the Kiox, its handlebar-mounted computer for e-bikes with Bosch drive systems, with an electronic bike lock system.
Users will be able to buy a $8.99 update to the Kiox, via a mobile app, that will lock the bike"s motor when the Kiox is removed from the bike. The motor will make a sound to let the user know it is locked and a lock icon appears on the display.
"The fact is that digital solutions can"t replace a classic mechanical bicycle lock, but they can enhance the traditional solution," said Claus Fleischer, the CEO of Bosch eBike Systems.
The Bosch Smart System just got another 10 IQ points smarter. With the latest software update, a navigation function is now available for all Bosch e-bikes with KIOX 300 display, which should make life even easier for all touring bikers in particular. We have summarized everything you need to know for you.
It’s worth taking a regular look at the eBike Flow app from Bosch. The Bosch team regularly releases software updates that not only make using the clever Bosch Smart System e-bikes easier, but also add many useful features. This year, we were able to enjoy theeBike Lock, a digital locking system for the eBike, the Ride Screen, which, together with the SmartphoneGrip mount, provides well-integrated smartphone navigation, and the improved push-assist with hill-hold function. Particularly pleasing: the updates were previously free of charge and you could also save the trip to the Bosch dealer, the software of the e-bike would be updated via connected smartphone. The latest update brings a navigation function to the small KIOX 300 display. The navigation only works in conjunction with the Bosch eBike Flow app. If you have a route calculated via the app, or select a route from a connected Komoot account, the route is also shown on the display as a simple guidance line. Turn-by-turn directions also appear at the top of the screen before intersections, even when you are not on the navigation screen. The center selection button on the LED remote can be used to switch to a new display that shows the remaining driving time, route and estimated arrival time. The KIOX 300 display does not (yet) offer a complete map view with road and route network.
In addition to the navigation function, other Quality of Life functions are added to the Smart System. Activity tracking now records the current altitude, ascent and maximum altitude on the display. If the cadence drops too much during relaxed cruising, a message with a shift recommendation flashes up. According to Bosch, this allows you to pedal in an optimal, efficient gear, which helps the motor save power and thus increases the range.
Keep it up! The new software update turns the KIOX 300 display into a handy mini-nav. If you can get by with the most minimal navigation features, you can save yourself a clunky smartphone mount or an additional bike computer on the handlebars. We will continue to keep an eye on the eBike Flow app for you and are eager to learn what Bosch has in store with the next software update.
Kiox seems like what they should have had a long time ago. Small footprint, a small but usable high resolution screen with all the important information such as battery percentage, user/motor watts shown. Being able to connect a hr monitor and use it as a fitness tracker is a big plus. The use of magnets to attach it is also a very good decision, intuvia holder was prone to breaking and not convenient. I hope they will bring features like custom ride modes too and this display will be great.
A small note: The power usage of such a small display is negligible for an ebike. It is not even touchscreen and maybe a quarter of a smartphone display today, even with the most power hungry displays of this size should consume maybe 0.2W(probably much less) per hour of operation. So even if you ride your ebike for 5 hours straight (Which is almost never the case without charging) it would drain 1wh at best and probably most of this will come from its internal battery anyways.
