Well first of all, text panels and LCDs are the same, they are IMyTextPanel blocks and thus share the same features, work the same but merely got different names and models.
You have to take ownership over the block in order to change the settings for it. Once you did that you have to change the display text to either public or private and then change the according text fields to contain whatever text you want inside it.
Space Engineers tries to not limit how complex worlds you can create. At certain points you will probably reach the memory limit of your system and won’t be able to add more objects, but that’s the only limit we imposed.
We need you to understand that performance depends on the complexity of your world and the configuration of your computer. Simple worlds run smoothly even on low-end computers, but a more complex world with rich object interactions could overload even high-end computers.
Performance means how smooth the game runs. It is defined by FPS (frames per second) as well. The higher the FPS rating, the smoother the game runs. 60 FPS is great, 30 is good and even 20 is OK. If the game gets below 20, you will start feeling the delay. FPS doesn’t impact the physics simulation. FPS influences only your experience and perceived smoothness.
Armor blocks are cheap on performance. Other block types are a bit more expensive, especially blocks that have some sort of functionality and require electricity. In other words, a simple mother ship made of armor only is better for performance than the same mother ship with hundreds of reactors, thrusters, doors and other objects.
Blocks that are “under development” (they look like scaffolding) – are less performance friendly than fully constructed blocks (they have more polygons and the game can’t do visibility optimizations).
Crashes, penetrations and deformations – the performance will depend on the type of objects colliding. Armors do well but other blocks are more expensive. The shape of the object and its interior impacts performance as well (e.g. a group of small ships parked inside a mother ship that crashed to an asteroid will require some heavy computations).
Don’t build mother ships and stations using small blocks. That would be inefficient. Use small blocks for small ships, and large blocks for mother ships and space stations.
Note: The 64-bit version can increase the amount of objects in a world almost to an unlimited number but it doesn’t mean that it increases the performance. The performance will still depend on the configuration of your system.
After many requests, we have decided to release our internal Replay Tool that we use to create our trailers. It allows you to record the movement and actions of multiple characters in the same world. You can use your video recording software of choice to capture these moments for cinematic purposes! It’s also super useful for epic screenshot creation. The tool allows you to be the director of your own Space Engineers film where you can carefully position and time different engineers with their own specific roles. We are extremely excited to see what the community will create with this!
Important: because it’s an internal tool, it has a very basic user interface and required advanced users to be used. We believe this is OK, because most video creators who would want to use it to create epic cinematic Space Engineers videos are advanced users.

Beds can preserve characters’ inventory and toolbar while they"re offline and keeps them alive as long as there is oxygen available. Is considered to be the same as the Cryo Chamber Block, except oxygen is used from the environment. Space Engineers don’t work from nine to five, they work whenever they’re needed: day or night, during peace and war. But when it’s time to call it a day, every engineer looks forward to resting in these beds.

Kitchens are purely decorative. The kitchens in Space Engineers come well-equipped and include stunning visual details. Space Engineers overcome challenges everyday when they’re working on new planets or among the stars.
Planters are purely decorative, but they make outer space a bit warmer by housing life in a special glass container. Build your own garden on the space station. Planters not only help to liven up spaces, but the flora housed inside these capsules also remind many engineers of the homes they’ve left behind in order to explore the universe.
Couchescan be used as seats, so take your time to relax and take a break. You don’t need to always run, fly or work, you can enjoy your cozy room and enjoy the view. The last thing anyone would ever call a Space Engineer is ‘couch potato’, but who wouldn’t like to relax after a hard day’s work on this comfy furniture?
Armory and Armory Lockers can be used to decorate interiors and store weapons, ammunition, tools and bottles; both are small storages (400L), where you can keep your equipment. Space Engineers use lockers in order to ensure that keepsakes from home, toiletries and other items are kept safe.

Keen Software House needs to stay profitable in order to continue development and support of Space Engineers, and to take risks, to invest into experiments that may not pay off in the short term, and to develop innovative concepts.
Sometimes we have to invest in people, teams, or projects, without knowing if they will work out. You need to give them time. And if you want to have a high bar for innovation, expecting novel things, you need to take the risk.
Why are they high-risk? Because they are hard to do, and usually it takes many iterations until we figure out the right way to do it. It usually takes a few iterations to perfect it. This means that doing water can take a few weeks (if we get it right from the start) or a few years (if we need to experiment, iterate, throw away past experiments, look for specialists in this area, etc). Same for the engine rewrite and AI / living worlds for our games.
A:Actually, even this update isn’t paid. The major part of this update (LCD screens, Replay Tool, new music tracks, smaller improvements) is free for everyone. Only the smaller and not mandatory part is paid - Decorative Pack, which you can purchase here.
A: The way we designed this is that even people who don’t purchase the Decorative Pack can play on servers with people who own the Decorative Pack. Players who don’t own the Decorative Pack won’t be able to build with these new blocks, nor interact with them, but they will be able to view them in-game.
A: To support future development of Space Engineers and other leading-edge projects we plan to work on at Keen Software House. Players kept asking us for something they could buy to support the development of Space Engineers, and the Decorative Pack is a great option for them.
A: Right after Space Engineers left early access and all hot issues were resolved. Most of the work was done by the Art team, the rest of the developers is working on other long-term updates.
A: We want more people to play Space Engineers, which means we must lower the barrier of entry. When the Space Engineers community grows, everyone benefits from this - more content on Workshop, more mods, more new ideas, more people to play with. This means that all non-mandatory features should be optional, so only those who really want them can pay for them. That’s why we decreased the price of Space Engineers, and made the Decorative Pack an optional purchase.
A: Hehe, if you put it this way, it sounds kind of funny. But the reality is that decorative blocks are low-hanging fruit, not a bottleneck towards those other mentioned future features. Additionally, the decorative pack can bring added profit and make the mentioned things happen.
Looking at our upcoming plans, I can say that we are going to work on another package similar to this one. It’s not a secret that we want to bring you more things you asked for in the past, such as new skins, new weapons, new economy system etc.

The various LCD Panel blocks are a great way to add a human touch to a ship or base by displaying useful images or text. For LCD configuration and usage, see LCD Surface Options.
Note: Some functional blocks, such as Cockpits, Programmable Blocks, Custom Turret Controllers, and Button Panels, have customizable LCD surfaces built in that work the same way as LCD Panel blocks, which are also discussed in detail under LCD Surface Options.
LCD Panels need to be built on a powered grid to work. Without power, they display an "Offline" text. While powered without having a text, image, or script set up, they display "Online".
LCD Panel blocks come in a variety of sizes from tiny to huge (see list below) and are available for large and small grid sizes. Note that LCD Panel blocks all have connections on their backs, and very few also on a second side.
All LCD Panels and LCD surfaces work with the same principle: They are capable of displaying dynamic scripts, or few inbuilt static images accompanied by editable text. Access the ship"s Control Panel Screen to configure LCD Panels or LCD surfaces; or face the LCD Panel block and press "K".
A Text Panel, despite its name, can also display images. On large grid, it is rectangular and does not fully cover the side of a 1x1x1 block. On small grid it is 1x1x1, the smallest possible LCD block in game.
On large grid, you choose the Text Panel when you need something that has rectangular dimensions that make it look like a wall-mounted TV or computer screen. If you want to display images, this one works best with the built-in posters whose names end in "H" or "V" (for horizontal or vertical rotation). On Small grid, you place these tiny display surfaces so you can see them well while seated in a cockpit or control seat, to create a custom display array of flight and status information around you.
Corner LCDs are much smaller display panels that typically hold a few lines of text. They don"t cover the block you place them on and are best suited as signage for doors, passages, or containers. They are less suitable for displaying images, even though it"s possible. If you enable the "Keep aspect ratio" option, the image will take up less than a third of the available space.
These huge Sci-Fi LCD Panels come in sizes of 5x5, 5x3, and 3x3 blocks, and can be built on large grids only. These panels are only available to build if you purchase the "Sparks of the Future" pack DLC.
They work the same as all other LCD Panels, the only difference is that they are very large. In the scenario that comes with the free "Sparks of the Future" update, they are used prominently as advertisement boards on an asteroid station.
This LCD panel can be built on large and small grids. The transparent LCD is basically a 1x1x1 framed window that displays images and text. It is part of the paid "Decorative Blocks Pack #2" DLC.
What is special about them is that if you set the background color to black, this panel becomes a transparent window with a built-in display. In contrast to other LCD Panels it has no solid backside, which makes it ideal to construct transparent cockpit HUDs, or simply as cosmetic decoration.
While configuring an LCD Panel, the GUI covers up the display in-world and you can"t see how the text or images comes out. In the UI Options, you can lower the UI Background opacity to be translucent, so you can watch what you are doing more easily.
Restart the computer. This is a classic troubleshooting step because it often works. It closes other processes that might be interfering with your monitor"s performance and gives you a clean slate from which to proceed.
Change the screen resolution. If the second monitor"s display is blurry, pixelated, distorted, or discolored—or if it"s duplicating the primary display—check the computer"s display settings. If the frame rate or resolution is incorrect, adjust it there.
Adjust the scaling settings. If the windows display in different sizes on different monitors in Windows 10, adjust the scaling settings. The recommended setting will match the apparent window size across monitors as closely as possible.
Fix discoloration and color accuracy. (On macOS, use display calibration.) If the computer"s settings don"t fix the problem, use a hardware calibration device, or adjust the monitor"s color settings, gamma, and brightness settings in the monitor"s on-screen menu. Every monitor is different, but Coloror Display Depth are the typical terms.
Other causes of color issues include different display panels, backlights, technologies, and age. If you need an exact match, consider professional-grade photo-editing monitors.
Adjust the monitor"s refresh rate. Monitors are built to work at particular refresh rates. If your computer doesn"t send a signal at one of those supported rates, there"s a chance the monitor won"t display the signal.
Swap out the current cable. A bad cable is the most common culprit when the monitor shows artifacts or no picture at all. Very long and poorly shielded cables are especially prone to interference.
Good cables don"t need to cost a fortune. Gold-plated connectors and oxygen-free copper don"t provide any noticeable differences in image quality. However, poorly constructed cables can lead to issues. Purchase a cable from a trusted manufacturer. Monoprice offers an excellent combination of affordability and reliable quality.
Try the cable in alternate ports on the PC, the display, or both. Change only one at a time, so you can pinpoint which ports caused the problem. If your PC doesn"t have a second compatible port, connect the monitor to a different computer to see if it works and to help pinpoint the problem.
Make sure the cable supports the correct version of the display standard. HDMI cables can support anything from HDMI 1.0, which provides minimal support, to HDMI 2.1, which can support the highest resolutions, color spaces, and audio channels.
USB-C and Thunderbolt monitors are even more confusing because the cables are physically interchangeable but not cross-compatible. DVI, meanwhile, has multiple versions, and it"s possible to plug an incompatible DVI cable into a computer or monitor.
Check the cable"s documentation on the manufacturer"s website to find the latest display connection version supported by the cable. If the cable doesn"t support your display, replace it with a cable that does. Additionally, check the appearance of the connectors on the cable, computer, and monitors to ensure they"re compatible.
Remove any switches or converters from the signal chain. If the cable has HDMI on one end and DVI on the other, try a cable that has the same connector on both ends. If possible, remove or replace dongles and switches temporarily. If the simpler connection works, the removed device is to blame.
Try a different display interface. For example, if the second monitor is currently connected over HDMI, use Display Port instead. This can accomplish a few things. If the current interface can"t drive all the pixels in the second monitor, switching to a different interface can fix that problem.
Based on capability, common display connectors can be ranked in this order: DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, Thunderbolt, USB-C, VGA. Unless you must use a VGA connection for legacy compatibility, avoid it; it cannot properly drive modern displays. Also, there are multiple versions of HDMI, DVI, and USB-C. Just because you can plug a cable into a port doesn"t mean you"ll have full compatibility.
Update the computer"s display drivers. If you have a third-party discrete graphics card, update the drivers from the manufacturer. If you plug the monitor into the motherboard"s display connectors, visit the motherboard or computer manufacturer"s website to check for updated drivers for those features.
Lower the image quality. If the monitor suffers from a poor frame rate, choppiness, or corrupted video or game content, reducing the signal"s complexity can help. For games, try the lowest-quality settings first, then gradually improve the quality until the issue reappears. For video content, try a lower resolution or a less demanding frame rate.
Check the power connections. If the monitor doesn"t turn on, try different power connectors or wall outlets. Test wall outlets with other devices before plugging in the monitor to ensure those devices work properly.
Check the monitor"s input settings. If the monitor has multiple input interfaces, make sure you have the correct one selected in the monitor"s on-screen menu. Most monitors have an auto-detect feature that automatically switches to the connector receiving the signal. When that doesn"t work, set the display connector manually.
Make sure the monitor can display the content sent to it. Does the monitor have sufficient color gamut, resolution, or bit depth to display the content properly? Consult the monitor"s documentation or the monitor manufacturer"s website.
If none of these steps fix the problem, you might need to replace the monitor. If you see colored lines, black or colored points, or cracks in the image, the monitor"s panel might be damaged and require replacement. These display issues can be fixed similarly on macOS.
LCD panels are backlit by LED lights, so they rely on a backlight behind the panel to make the picture visible, and the LCD layer can"t prevent all light from escaping out of the screen. This means that even in a black scene, the backlight is still on, and some light escapes, causing blacks to appear gray.
In an attempt to mask this shortcoming, some LED TVs employ local dimming to target dark portions of the screen and dim the backlight in those areas. The intended result is that dark portions become darker, but everything else is left as bright as it should be, increasing the contrast between dark and light objects.
OLEDs use self-emitting pixels and don"t have a backlight, and because of this, they don"t have local dimming features. However, we score OLEDs as a perfect 10 for local dimming, because they do everything that a local dimming feature on an LED TV should do. Dark areas are completely off, leaving bright areas to stand out without any blooming.
Some TVs offer different local dimming settings. Low settings will usually dim the backlight less, but then the local dimming will also be less effective at improving the contrast. Higher settings will dim more, but may also make blooming, or other related issues, more visible. Local dimming preferences are subjective, so if you have multiple options, try out the different settings and choose the one you like best. Apart from that, there"s no way to get better results from local dimming. If this is a feature that matters to you, be sure to get a TV that scores highly in this test.
Contrast/Brightness: These settings aim to improve the contrast ratio by tinkering with the white and black levels. It doesn"t have a direct effect on the local dimming but can improve the picture quality. The contrast setting increases the luminosity of the brightest whites, while brightness (sometimes called black level), makes blacks darker. Keep in mind the brightness setting on some TVs controls the backlight, which doesn"t affect picture quality.
Samsung"s UHD Dimming: This processes the video in an attempt to mimic local dimming. It doesn’t dim the backlight but instead changes the contrast of different areas of the picture. Video purists usually dislike it, because it messes with the video settings of the TV, changing contrast from frame to frame. We don’t recommend using it.
Frame dimming: Frame dimming, or CE dimming on Samsung TVs, is a basic version of local dimming, but it dims the entire backlight instead of zones. Usually found on edge-lit TVs, it causes small highlights to become dim as well. It may improve the contrast a bit, but it"s not very useful for most scenes.
Local dimming features on LED TVs are a way to improve the contrast ratio. Since these TVs consist of LED backlights behind an LCD panel, local dimming aims to turn off, or dim, certain zones of the LED backlight, making blacks look darker and highlights brighter. However, there may be some issues with local dimming on some TVs as it could cause blooming around bright objects or for entire zones to light up when there"s a small object. Overall, most local dimming features on modern TV do an effective job at improving the picture quality in dark scenes, and only some lower-end models will have glaring problems.
The game even provides a creative mode where you can basically enable unlimited resources and instant crafting, essentially letting you do anything you can imagine. It’s The Sims, but for outer space.
Colorful Icons gives you complete freedom, letting you choose which icons will be changed, and includes colored icons for ores, ingots, components, and more!
Based on actual NASA photos, modder Dr. Novikov plays around with shaders, shadows, lighting effects, and other visual properties of the game to make everything appear as real as possible.
While there are mods that add functionality and data displays to aid your space exploration, there are lots of useful scripts that let you automate certain commands as well.
The mod gives you options that you can set, like how far you should be for the drone to start following you, how far a drone will stay away from its target, and a quick toggle switch to make the drone stop following you when you don’t need him anymore.
He actually takes inspiration from real-time strategy games to give you easier control of units in Space Engineers, with Fleet Command MKII targeted specifically at controlling ship fleets.
The pack includes a number of turrets and cannons to play around with, along with mounts and casemates, depending on what you need for each of your ships.
Other than the Death Star gun and Star Trek cockpit, the modding community has come up with loads of new parts for you to use to make your Space Engineers ships even better.
If you’re looking to sneak up on enemy ships, or stealthily make an escape from battle, all you have to do is fire up your cloaking device and you’ll be completely invisible.
Whether you feel like you’ve explored enough of the vanilla universe, or just want to check out some of the custom content available, there are loads of universe alterations out there.
These last two aren’t as big compared to other entries, but are more like bonus mods that showcase the endless possibilities offered in Space Engineers.
This just goes to show that anything is possible with modding, and I’m sure there’s still loads of interesting content to come for this game down the line.

The LCD Panel is a thin panel that takes an entire block face and can display a variety of messages and textures that can be displayed constantly or triggered by the Programmable Block, Sensor, Timer Block, or any other block capable of triggering.
Choosing "Edit Text" allows inputting custom text such as the name of a room to use above doors. The text can then be scaled up to fit the screen dimensions or preferred size by using the "Font Size" slider.
The "Color" sliders allow setting the text colour using RGB slider and "Backgr." allows setting background fill colours (default black). If using a transparent LCD then the text will be against transparency unless fill colour is added.
"Loaded Textures" has a list of the available default and modded (where applicable) images available for display on the screen. Select the desired image and select "Add to selection". The selected image will then show in the second "Selected textures" panel.
When multiple images are applied they can be set to cycle between with the duration between images being set by the "Image change interval" slider. To remove an image from display select it in the second panel and select "Remove selected".
The "Preserve aspect ratio" checkbox can be used to prevent the image being stretched if it does not fit the screen properly such as when using a wide LCD.
To set the LCD to display a script, choose "Script" from the dropdown. Choosing Script allows the display of information such as weather, artificial horizon for vehicles, Energy and Hydrogen level etc.
The panel"s title and text can be made public, private, or a combination of both. Textures applied can be selected from a list or custom textures can be selected. Textures can be set to rotate on a timer, changing from one to the next. GPS coordinates shown in the GPS format in the text panel will appear in the GPS and can be activated (=shown on HUD).
The LCD Panel could be accessed with the programmable block as IMyTextPanel. It could work in ´Texture Mode´ in which the selected textures are shown or the ´Text Mode´ in which the text is shown. The following methods are available:

• Check your ceiling clearance by adding 15 inches to your body height. So, if you are 6’0”, you need at least a 7’3” ceiling. Behind the treadmill there should be at least three feet of unobstructed space.
• Make sure all four contact points of the treadmill are solidly on the floor and that the floor is stable. Positioning a treadmill close to a wall can increase stability.
• If there’s another apartment or bedroom below the treadmill’s room, adding a treadmill mat will significantly deaden the transmitted noise in these situations.
• If you’re moving a treadmill into a basement or smaller room, hire experts. But if you insist on DIY, move and install the deck first, followed by the uprights and console. Either way, check the dimensions of the base and make sure you have clearance for tight corners.
• If possible, dedicate an electrical circuit to the treadmill. Additional appliances plugged into that circuit can lead to a power overload and an inadvertent shutdown.

It still features all of the convenience options you find on NordicTrack machines—like quick keys to jump to a particular speed or incline with a single tap instead of repeatedly pressing a button.

We like the thumb dials mounted chest-high on the hand grips that let you quickly adjust your speed and incline—it feels way more fluid than trying to stab at buttons on a console. While we don’t often recommend home treadmills that cost less than $1,000 because they generally have small motors and shaky frames, the 7.0 AT is surprisingly steady. We set it up in the home of one of our testers, and he found that the deck didn’t shake during months of use. The belt is narrower and shorter than we’d prefer for running, but it’s an ideal size if you’re walking. Plus, you’ll appreciate the small profile if you’re setting it up in a small room.
This budget-friendly treadmill on Amazon is a great deal because so many people buy and love it. (Currently, it has earned over 1,000 five-star reviews.) Of course, to hit such a low price, there are a lot of compromises—the belt is the skinniest we’ve seen, the motor tops out at 9 mph, and to adjust the incline you have to get off the machine and flip a lever under the deck. But, it’s smooth and reliable at walking speeds and is handy for the occasional jog when you otherwise can’t get outside. It’s hard to argue with what this treadmill delivers at this price.
We have always appreciated the value a Pro-Form delivers. The sibling brand to NordicTrack, Pro-Form shares much of the same technology, like the iFit interactive workout programs. (You get a free one-year subscription to iFit when you buy a treadmill.) But, this machine is dialed back just a little to keep the price in check. You get only a 7-inch touchscreen display, and the treadmill tops out at just 10 mph—fast enough for walking and jogging. Still, the 2.6-horsepower motor and cushioned deck make it plenty capable of handling a few easy runs per week.
Though it has a smaller motor than the NordicTrack and LifeSpan machines here, and it lacks the fancy touchscreen you find on other models, the Sole F80 treadmill is still a serious training tool. The durable frame can support runners up to 375 pounds, so it’ll take any beating you can deliver. And the gentle bounce is soft underfoot but not so much as to cause any stability issues. (The Sole F85 treadmill has a 4.0 HP motor and larger rollers for even better performance, though it costs $1,000 more when not on sale.) A handy feature on the F80 is the rail-mounted buttons to control speed and incline, which let you grip the rail and squeeze the button with a thumb, rather than jabbing at the console when you’re running all out. If you need interactive coaching, the iPad holder lets you bring your own device. Or, just prop this machine up in front of a big screen TV and binge some Netflix on your long runs.
Like the Sunny treadmill above, this Xterra is an entry-level walking treadmill that"s a hit with Amazon.com buyers because it"s so affordable and delivers reliability you don"t usually see for just a few hundred bucks. It"s extremely lightweight and small, and it"s a breeze to assemble by yourself. And, once set up, it"ll handle years of occasional walking and jogging. The 16-inch belt is as narrow as it gets, so you should plan on doing any intense intervals. But, if you do want to pick up the pace, it"ll turn the belt up to 10mph. A compromise on budget machines like this is that you don"t get big, smooth motors to do heavy work. Also, if you want to change the incline, you have to get off and do that manually—incline tops out at just 5 percent.
NordicTrack long offered a “T Series” of treadmills, which were just a step below its “Commercial” line—they had smaller motors and rollers, plus a slightly narrower deck. That saved you hundreds on the cost, but the machines were still strong performers. Now, the EXP line steps into that role, with the 14i at the top of that range. (The number in the name indicates the size of the touchscreen on the console.) The Commercial 1750 (above) is still our top pick here if you’re training for a marathon or competing in road races. But, save some cash that you can put toward new shoes by going with scaled back specs: The 20-inch belt is still plenty wide for walking and jogging, while its 12 percent incline is as steep as the Mount Washington Auto Road. So it packs plenty of power to suit an entire family of walkers and runners.
The TR5500iM has been updated with a 10-inch touchscreen console, but still has the plain-Jane look that we’ve long loved and the small stance that won’t take up much space in your basement. The refreshed console is a nice upgrade—even if it doesn’t bring you live coaching or Google Streets views—because it’s so easy to use. But, you can add smarts to that console by “mirroring” your phone’s screen, so you can watch videos on the machine’s larger display. Plus, when you’re preprogramming a workout, you can simply slide bars on a chart up or down to adjust the speed and incline for each segment. That console also sits quite low; taller testers had to look down more while running on this treadmill than they did on other machines. However, we like that the lower console is out of the way if you are watching a TV.
Folding treadmills don’t really disappear—you’re not sliding one into a closet when you’re done with your jog. But, the City L6 collapses nearly flat and could slip under a bed. With its small motor and low top speed, buy this one if you want a machine only for light walking. But, it still packs a lot of training tools you find on Pro-Form’s running treadmills: If you have an iPad or tablet, you can connect to the iFit interactive training platform to get coaching, workouts, and virtual walks through scenic locations.

The United States Air Force (USAF) operates the most T-38s. In addition to training USAF pilots, the T-38 is used by NASA. The U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland, is the principal US Navy operator (other T-38s were previously used as USN for dissimilar air combat training until replaced by the similar Northrop F-5 Tiger II). Pilots of other NATO nations fly the T-38 in joint training programs with USAF pilots.

In 1952 Northrop began work on a fighter project, the shoulder-mounted delta wing and a single engine.General Electric J79 engine, weighing nearly two tons, meant the resulting aircraft would be large and expensive.General Electric Aviation"s newly created Small Aircraft Engine Department showed Northrop a relatively tiny engine (around 400 lb installed weight) capable of 2,500 lb of thrust and Northrop VP-Engineering Edgar Schmued saw the possibility of reversing the trend toward the large fighters. Schmued and chief engineer Welko Gasich decided on a small twin-engine "hot-rod" fighter, the N-156. Northrop began its N-156 project in 1954, aiming for a small supersonic fighter jet capable of operating from the US Navy"s escort carriers. However, when the Navy chose not to pursue equipping its fleets in that fashion, Northrop continued the N-156 design using in-house funding, recasting it as a lightweight fighter (dubbed N-156F) and aimed at the export market.
In the mid-1950s the USAF issued a General Operating Requirement for a supersonic trainer, planning to retire its 1940s-era Lockheed T-33s. Northrop officials decided to adapt the N-156 to this competition. The only other candidate was the two-seat version of the North American F-100 Super Sabre. Although the F-100 was not considered the ideal candidate for a training aircraft (it is not capable of recovering from a spin),T-37 primary jet trainer. When production ended in 1972, 1,187 T-38s had been built (plus two N-156T prototypes). Since its introduction, it is estimated that some 50,000 military pilots have trained on this aircraft. The USAF remains one of the few armed flying forces using dedicated supersonic final trainers, as most, such as the US Navy, use high subsonic trainers.
The T-38 is of conventional configuration, with a small, low, long-chord wing, a single vertical stabilizer, and tricycle undercarriage. The aircraft seats a student pilot and instructor in tandem, and has intakes for its two turbojet engines at the wing roots. Its nimble performance has earned it the nickname white rocket. In 1962 the T-38 set absolute time-to-climb records for 3,000, 6,000, 9,000 and 12,000 meters, beating the records for those altitudes set by the F-104 in December 1958. (The F-4 Phantom beat the T-38"s records less than a month later.)
The F-5B and F (which also derive from the N-156) can be distinguished from the T-38 by the wings; the wing of the T-38 meets the fuselage straight and ends square, while the F-5 has leading edge extensions near the wing roots and wingtip launch rails for air-to-air missiles. The wings of both the T-38 and the F-5 family use conventional skin over spar-rib structure.
Most T-38s built were of the T-38A variant, but the USAF also had a small number of aircraft converted for weapons training (designated AT-38B), which were fitted with a gunsight and could carry a gun pod, rockets, or bombs on a centerline pylon. As of September 30, 2017, 503 T-38s were still operational with the USAF,HUD, GPS, INS (Inertial Navigation System), and TCAS. Most jets have also received PMP (a propulsion modification to improve low-altitude engine thrust). Approximately a third of the fleet (those that experience more severe usage) are currently undergoing structural replacements and upgrades, as well as receiving new wings, to extend their service life to 2029.
The fighter version of the N-156 was eventually selected for the US Military Assistance Program and produced as the F-5 Freedom Fighter. Many of these have since reverted to a weapons training role as various air forces have introduced newer types into service. The F-5G was an advanced single-engined variant later renamed the F-20 Tigershark. In 2018, the Iranian Air Force announced that an outwardly-similar aircraft, named the Kowsar, had been constructed within Iran.
The USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) had T-38s in service from 1978 until SAC"s 1991 inactivation. These aircraft were used to enhance the career development of bomber and tanker copilots through the "Accelerated Copilot Enrichment Program." They were later used as proficiency aircraft for all B-52, B-1, Lockheed SR-71, U-2, Boeing KC-135, and KC-10 pilots. SAC"s successors, the Air Combat Command (ACC) and the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) continue to retain T-38s as proficiency aircraft for U-2 pilots and B-2 pilots, respectively.
The Air Training Command"s (ATC) successor, the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), uses the T-38C to prepare pilots for the F-15C Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-52 Stratofortress, B-1B Lancer, B-2 Spirit, A-10 Thunderbolt, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. The AETC received T-38Cs in 2001 as part of the Avionics Upgrade Program. The T-38Cs owned by the AETC have undergone propulsion modernization which replaces major engine components to enhance reliability and maintainability, and an engine inlet/injector modification to increase available takeoff thrust.availability goal of 75% which it maintained in 2011, however in 2015 availability is 60%.
The USAF launched the T-X program in 2010 to replace the T-38.BAE Systems and Rolls Royce, offering the Hawk trainer, equipped with Rolls" Adour Mk951 engine with FADEC; Lockheed Martin and Korea Aerospace Industries, offering the T-50; and Raytheon and Alenia Aermacchi offering the T-100, an aircraft whose design originated with the M-346.Boeing and Saab offered a new-technology design powered by the General Electric F404 turbofan engine. The Boeing/Saab bid first flew on December 20, 2016, and on September 27, 2018, was declared the winner of the T-X competition.

In response to the 1973 oil crisis, from 1974 to 1983, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic display team adopted the T-38 Talon, which used far less fuel than the F-4 Phantom. The Blue Angels downsized to the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk at roughly the same time. After the 1982 "Diamond Crash" incident that killed four of the Thunderbirds" six demonstration pilots, the T-38 was replaced in this role by the front line F-16A Fighting Falcon.

Even though this value has been printed in USAF outlets for many years, it is probably incorrect. The T-38 time-to-climb record, set in 1962, was 3 minutes to 30,000 feet. According to Northrop"s Roy Martin (quoted on p. 64 of Air & Space/Smithsonian, Vol. 20, No. 3 (August/September 2005)), a normal climb at military power - that is, maximum power without afterburner - is around 6,000 feet/minute.
While screen readers can read a full page to a user, screen reader users may prefer to instead listen to a list of links. In that case, a screen reader may only read the link text and not the surrounding text.
Keyboard-only users may not be able to use a mouse to click links. They use a keyboard’s tab button to navigate through a page’s links, buttons, and form inputs. For such users, it is very important for them to see which item has focus at all times.
Colorblind users may not be able to perceive color cues. Typically, pages present links as a different color than their surrounding text. Adding underlines or other non-color indicators help users who may not see color. Users who are not comfortable with technology may also appreciate having links underlined.
It’s most important for link text to make sense without the surrounding sentences or content. The link text alone should convey the function and purpose of the link. Link text should also be unique and easy to speak out loud.
Use judgment when linking full URLs. When linking a URL, consider users who must speak it out loud and who must listen to a screen reader announce it.
Occasionally, it may not be possible to make link text alone convey the link’s purpose out of context. In those cases, a few fallback strategies are available:
In general, content editors should avoid using images as links. If an image functions as a link, the image must have alt text that conveys the location and purpose of the link. The alt text should not describe the image. Treat image links as links, not as images.
Pages should not present more than one link to the same destination next to each other. One common design pattern is for an image, a heading, and a word like “More” to each link to the same destination, such as in a news list. Assistive technology users may find navigating through several links a bad experience. Instead, provide one link. Either select one element to be the link, or wrap all elements within one link.
Giving links a different color from the surrounding text is common on the web. Color differences help sighted users, especially users with cognitive impairments. But, color differences alone are not sufficient for accessibility.
In general, pages should have some non-color away of conveying links. This concern applies most to links that appear alongside or within blocks of text. Links that appear in menus, for example, are clear enough because of their place in a layout.
The easiest way to provide non-color link indicators is by underlining links. The underline should always be persistent, not solely on hover. Another common option includes having an icon.
Some designers prefer not to have a non-color indicator be present only on hover. While the WCAG guidelines allow for this, the requirements are extremely stringent:
In practice, there are very few color combinations that meet the above requirements. Even then, such designs provide a worse experience for colorblind or cognitively impaired users.
Keyboard-only users press the tab key to navigate through interactive elements like links. As such, it is important that users be able to see which element is currently has keyboard focus.
Each browser has a different default focus style, generally a thin dotted line or faint blue ring. Browser defaults are often imperceptible, especially around image links or on blue backgrounds. As a general rule, designers should design custom focus styles. Focus styles should be noticeable and salient.
Link sizes should be generous. Large link sizes make it easier for users with low coordination or on mobile devices to activate links. Link size consideration is most important for links that are not contained within blocks or paragraphs of text, such as call to action links. Links should be at least 44px wide and 22px tall.
Links should not be too large on mobile. Very large links that take up much of the viewport can be accidently activated, such as when a user touches the screen to scroll up or down.
Many designers provide hover styles to give extra cues when a mouse is over a link. Such styles may include a background color, glow, outline, or brief animation. Providing these styles is a best practice. When providing hover styles, it is also best to provide them on keyboard focus.
It’s common for pages to present multiple links to the same location next to one another. For example, a news listing may present an image, heading, and “more” text each as links to the same story. This can create a bad experience for assistive technology users.
sInstead, wrap all elements within the same anchor tag. Doing so provides a larger clickable area, a single tab stop for keyboard-only users, and a single entry for screen reader users. A screen reader will read all content within the a tag. So, images contained in this kind of anchor should have a null alt attribute.
Developers should take care when styling such anchor tags. Applying display:block on the anchor element may make styling easier. When styling for hover and focus, CSS can target elements within the focus. For example, to underline text within an anchor on focus, use a:focus p {text-decoration: underline;}.
As a general rule, link text alone should be enough to convey the purpose of the link. But, some visual designs do not allow for descriptive link text. One strategy for dealing with such designs is to include extra text within a span inside the link. Developers can use CSS to hide the extra text visually but still expose it to screen readers.
Developers should use care when providing such screen reader-only text. The following techniques will hide content from screen readers altogether and should be avoided when providing screen reader-only content:
Besides the hidden link text approach discussed above, ARIA provides HTML attributes developers may want to consider: aria-describedby, aria-label, and aria-labelledby.
The aria-describedby attribute provides extra text for a screen reader besides the link text. To give a link an ARIA description, first give the descriptive text an id attribute. Then, give the link an aria-describedby attribute equal to the description’s id attribute. A screen reader will first read the link text, then the description. For example:
The aria-decribedby attribute should often be a developer’s preferred implementation. Developers can also create ARIA labels the using aria-label and aria-labelledby attributes.
Assistive technology considers an ARIA description to be in addition to the link text. But, assistive technology considers an ARIA label to replace the link text. For that reason, links with ARIA labels may create a worse experience for speech recognition software users. If the ARIA label does not match the link text at least in part, speech recognition software may not work as a user expects.
To use the aria-labelledby attribute on a link, first provide some other text an ID attribute. Then, give the link an aria-label equal to that other text’s id attribute. For example:
