There are many accessories available to reduce glare so you can get good shots. Start with an anti-glare screen protector, as these products count as the original screen protector for LCD displays. You can affix one of these protectors in the same way you would a screen protector on your smartphone or tablet. These screen protectors will not eliminate glare entirely, but they should reduce the severity. As an added bonus, they will protect your screen from scratches.

Another popular accessory is called a digital display shade, or a lens hood. As the name suggests, this is a shade that installs above the LCD display, significantly reducing glare. Have you ever had the sun’s glare or reflections of nearby lights and objects ruin your shot? I’ll be honest with you, it’s happened to me so I’m pretty sure you have experienced it too. But don’t worry. I’ll explain how to remove sun glare from video shots using a CPL filter.

To remove the sun’s glare from glass or other reflective surfaces that are in your video shots, use a polarizing filter, such as a CPL, or circular polarizing filter.

It’s much smarter to fix the problem of glare and reflections during production rather than trying to fix-it-in-post. Using a circular polarizer filter takes much less time and is simple to do.

A CPL filter will typically reduce obliquely reflected light, especially sunlight, off shiny non-metallic surfaces such as glass, water, and paint. In our motor car example, the polarizer allows the camera to see through the glass windshield to reveal the interior of the vehicle. You will also notice the CPL also affected glare and reflections from the painted trunk and side panel.

A CPL can also reduce light that is reflected from atmospheric moisture, dust, and pollution. In doing so, polarizers can make skies look more dramatic by making them appear darker and more saturated. Clouds will also seem to ‘pop’ against the darker blue sky. You can see in the example sky image that, to my taste, you can have too much of a good thing. In this case, the full effect darkens the sky too much.

To use your CPL filter you normally attach it to the front of your lens. Once in place, you can vary the amount of the polarizing effect being applied by rotating the filter. There will be an angle at which the effect will be at a maximum and another angle at which the effect is at a minimum. It is for you to judge how much of the effect looks right. As with many creative techniques, a subtle approach can give more pleasing results than going in full-throttle.

When the angle drops to zero, or increases to 180 degrees, the effect will be minimal. So when you shoot in the direction of the Sun or in the opposite direction to the Sun, you’ll see little or no effect.

An easy way to work out where you’re going to see the maximum polarizing effect is to make a gun shape with your thumb and index finger. Now point your index finger towards the light source. As you rotate around the long axis of your index finger, anywhere your thumb points will be where you’ll get the maximum polarizing effect.

If you are an iPhone videographer you will not be able to screw your CPL directly onto your iPhone’s lens. Instead, it will screw into a spring-loaded clip mount that keeps the CPL in place over the camera lens. Once attached, visually check that the filter is centered over the camera lens.

To adjust the polarizing effect rotate the front ring of the CPL filter until you get the desired effect. Do not use the “handles” of the clip mount to try and rotate the filter. You’ll end up moving the filter off center.

Since it is simple to attach and remove the CLP filter with the clip mount, it’s also easy to make an elementary mistake. Don’t set your framing, focus, and exposure and then clip on the polarizer. Remember the CPL is dark and equivalent to closing your aperture by one or two stops, so set your exposure once the filter is in place.

When you want to remove skin reflections and flatten skin tones. This can be especially useful if your skin has oily patches that catch the light. Most often noticeable on foreheads and noses.

Reduce some reflections from sunglasses and eye-glasses. Although eye-glasses can have anti-reflective coatings applied they are seldom 100% successful. A CPL filter can help reduce the reflections.

In the images above, you can see that the application of the circular polarizing filter gives damp road surfaces a drier appearance. This is very noticeable in the foreground of the upper pair of images. On the left, the grass verge and concrete road surface clearly look damp after a rain shower, but the CPL has made the damp surface appear dry (right image). Even the edges of the puddles have shrunk a little, and in the nearest puddle, we can see a bit more detail of the ground beneath the water surface. In the lower image pair, the nearest puddle the sun’s glare has been removed entirely, and a lot of the glare has been removed from the road in the distance.

This is something I discovered by accident in my office. A polarizer can turn your LCD monitor black, which may be useful if you are filming in an office where you want to hide any displayed information.

Sure, the easiest thing to do is to turn off the monitor. But what if you could display some notes to help in an interview or vlog. By using the circular polarizing filter you can still read the notes on the monitor but your audience can’t see anything being displayed.

While recording landscape shots using a wider angle lens (below about 35mm on a full frame camera), since the level of polarization will vary across the sky. Potentially the sky in the center of your clip will appear dark blue but will gradually change to lighter shades to the edges.

Outdoors if there is a lot of camera movement. Again, this is due to to the fact that the level of polarization will vary across the scene. Remember, maximum polarization occurs when you point the lens at a point that is 90 degrees away from the sun. In the direction of the sun or the opposite direction, the effect is zero. So the camera movement could go from areas of high polarization to low polarization. Potentially an odd look.

Even though a polarizer can help darken the blue sky and enhance detail in the clouds, consider the other effects. Remember, polarizers remove reflections from water surfaces. So if you used a CPL filter you would lose the beautiful reflective symmetry of the shot. So, in this case, you might not want to use a polarizer.

Although Lightroom and Photoshop have overtaken much of what you used to do “in-camera”, a polarizing filter is perhaps the only filter you still need.

Good polarizers are not cheap, you could spend a few hundred dollars on one. But then, they are not just a simple piece of glass. Normally, they’re comprised of many layers: the polarizer itself, protective glass plus anti-reflective and waterproof coatings. So, if possible, don’t go for the cheapest filter you can find, especially when using lenses of longer focal length.

From my own online research, it seems the inexpensive filters tend to be OK on wide angle lenses but any imperfections start to show on higher focal length telephoto lenses.

When buying make sure you get the correct size. The size of the circular polarizer you require will depend on the diameter of your lens. This is normally indicated on the front of the lens.

You can see that the Canon RF 24-105mm lens below indicates it has a 77mm diameter. Therefore a 77mm filter is required for this lens, so I use my 77mm Hoya circular polarizer.

I was once given some really good advice about filters. Essentially, buy the largest size you need, and use it with stepping rings on your smaller diameter lenses. That was great advice that has saved me the considerable cost of getting a separate polarizer for each of my lenses.

If you think of a CPL as polaroid sunglasses for your camera it immediately is clear that the filter restricts light entering the lens. But by how much? It really depends on the CPL you are using. Generally, you can assume the circular polarizer filter will reduce the light by about 2 stops.

Under sunny conditions losing that amount of light probably isn’t going to be a worry, but if you are filming in low light conditions it could be a problem.

It is not recommended to use a polarizer at night. A mentioned above, a CPL filter effectively reduces your exposure by around 2 stops. So when filming at night it would be like putting sunglasses on your lens and camera. Anyway, our objective was to remove sun glare from video shots and by definition, there’s not a lot of sun at night.

If you did use a CPL at night you would have to use a faster lens or bump up the gain/ISO. The latter risks introducing additional video noise into the footage, which could ruin your shot or require using a denoiser plugin while editing .

Like other filters, a UV filter is a thin piece of glass that has a special coating and placed in front of the camera lens. However, the similarity with polarizing filters ends there. The UV filter’s effect on the image is entirely different. The polarizer will reduce glare, remove reflections and enhance color saturation. A UV filter, as the name suggests, prevents the ultraviolet light entering the lens. Think of it as factor 100 for your camera sensor.

You may think there is no point in buying a UV filter, and that’s a perfectly valid opinion that large numbers of photographers and videographers would agree with you. However, I do have a UV filter on every lens I own. It’s not because I want to cut the ultraviolet light, instead, it’s about protecting the front element of my expensive lenses from accidental bumps, scratches, and environmental dust and spray contamination.

There is a downside though. The UV filter can potentially produce other optical effects. It will absorb a tiny percentage of light. So if you are filming at night you may need to compensate by increasing the sensor gain or ISO. Depending on the quality of the glass there may be a reduction in image sharpness. Finally, if you have any bright light sources in the scene, a UV filter might cause ghosting or optical flares.

If you want to use a UV and polarizing filter together that is easy to do. You can screw the two filters together, since they usually have screw threads on both their front and rear sides. But you may wish to have the CPL filter nearest the front of your lens. This will hopefully help to reduce vignetting at wider focal lengths.

So do you need both a polarizer and a UV filter? No, you don’t. But it depends on your personal preference and the conditions in which you are filming. At least I know I have a little extra protection from my UV filter and that I can easily remove it when required.

Sadly, the days of the matte-screen TV are long gone. These days, nearly all TVs have glossy screens. These mirror-like finishes are just bound to cause reflections.

Or maybe not. Even if you want to live in a "normal" room with actual light (weird, but you do you), there are steps you can take to minimize, and perhaps eliminate, reflections on your TV. You might not need to spend any money. You won"t have to live in a cave, I promise. Unless you want to, of course. Here are five tricks to help you make sure that no matter what lighting you have in your room, you"re still getting the best picture with an absolute minimum of reflections.

So no matter what TV you have, if there"s a light in your room that can "see" the TV screen, you"ll be able to see it too, and it will affect picture quality.

The easiest way to reduce reflections is to turn off the lights, right? Well, sort of. There"s a reason people like to leave the lights on when they"re watching TV: eye fatigue. Many people feel

It may seem like a roundabout way of solving anything, but you can make your TV dimmer to minimize eye fatigue in a dark room. If this works, you won"t need to leave the lights on. No lights, no reflections. Problem solved.

Another option is to mount the TV on a wall mount that pivots, tilts, or both. So when you"re getting the reflection, you can move the TV slightly so the reflection is reflected elsewhere (and you can"t see it). Several companies make wall mounts that do this. A few things to keep in mind. Most LCDs look worse off axis (or off center). If you pivot these, you"ll be viewing them off-axis and picture quality might suffer.

A slightly more elaborate step is to make the lighting in your room more controllable. Smart lamps, outlets, and switches let you control individual lights, or groups of lights, and connect them to Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. Then you can just say "Ceiling lights off" or something similar to turn off the offending lights without leaving your sofa.

If you have a lot of windows, you"re fighting the sun, and your TV isn"t going to win. Sure, today"s brightest LCDs are plenty watchable in many bright environments, but you aren"t getting the best picture quality with that much light in the room.

Motorized sun screens, either inside or out, are a huge help in more ways than one. I live in Southern California, and the west side of my house bakes all afternoon long. I put in some exterior sun shades and, not to sound like a testimonial, my house is now way cooler, temperature-wise anyway. It"s also darker inside, with far less direct light and therefore, fewer reflections.

I will say this, though: If you get the motorized variety, check whether they can be tied into a home automation system or whatever smart system you"re using. Most smart products tie in to Alexa, but fewer also play with Google and fewer still with Siri.

A week ago, I co-hosted a live Zoom webinar in honor of Women’s History Month. I practiced the speaker introductions without notes but changed course at the last minute. I chose to read from the teleprompter on my computer screen—with my reading glasses.

Immediately after the show, an email arrived in my inbox from a world-class public speaker and friend with the gentle warning, “I think you should know…” Attached was a screenshot of me with a halo reflected on each lens of my glasses.

I teach business leaders how to up-level their presence and authority on Zoom, yet I was not practicing what I preach. Instead, I opted for the comfort of being able to read without squinting, even with 24-point type.

Here are some proven tips to avoid excessive glare on your glasses when on video calls. Note the word excessive: unless you wear fashion frames without lenses or work out of a video production studio, some reflection is near impossible to avoid, particularly when working remotely.

Ring lights cast shadows and require lots of fill, not to mention the reflection they cast on your glasses or any reflective surface in your shot. Dimmable LED Panel lights emit softer light that make reflections less noticeable than the telltale circle. A broad light source like a Softbox lighting kit is another affordable solution for studio quality lighting at home.

Almost all photographs are a record of reflections. A webcam is no different. The camera captures light reflecting off a surface. In photography it is called the Angle of Incidence. When you grasp and practice the general concept, you will be able to angle the light source to reduce the glare. If the light source is sunlight from a window, you may need to lower the shades or block the light with cardboard.

The computer screen is a big source of glare, particularly at night. Dim the screen or attach an anti-glare monitor filter to your display. At night, increase the level of ambient room light to offset the intensity of the glare coming from the computer screen and your video conferencing lighting.

Do not look at the light. Lower your chin slightly but still make eye-level contact with the camera. You can also lift the earpieces (the temples) a notch to increase the angle of the lenses to the light source.

Computer screens give off blue light which causes eye strain and can be damaging to your eyes in the long term. Blue light blocking lenses do the job to shield your eyes from damaging blue light rays but reflect grey or blue on video. In short, they may be good for your eyes but not good for your appearance on Zoom.

Some eyeglass manufacturers tout new non-glare technology that helps protect your eyes and keeps lenses glare-free on video calls. Anti-reflective (AR) coatings can be applied when you buy glasses or to ones you already own. But note that they are still fairly new when it comes to video conferencing. I plan to check them out and will write an update to this article.

One of the keys to looking good on a video call is to practice and test. Experiment with different light configurations. Record yourself in a variety of setups and find what works so that you can show up as your absolute best. If you are still having trouble managing your glasses on the screen, you may want to consider making the move to contacts.

Polarizers and LCDs may not be the best idea; LCD displays work by polarizing light†, so knocking back the glare may not even be possible without blocking the image altogether, depending on the screen"s direction of polarization and the direction of the glare source.

A hood (suggested in Greg"s answer) will be your best bet -- but you can use a box rather than fabric or spend ten bucks putting together a frame out of PVC pipe or a bit of wood molding. It should only take a few seconds to set up (and should be relatively easy to explain to librarians as well). That eliminates the extra person.

Black pixels are black because the liquid crystal is aligned to allow polarized light through at 90 degrees to the backlight polarizer. People have been using the TZ1 to TZ 7 and now to TZ10 with the reflective LCD screens and produced numerous excellent shots in beaches-deserts-snows and all forms of landscape and even from airborne sky diving stunts and from aircrafts in open spaces!

This is nonsense. I can take my LX3 out with no LCD at all (shut off), and keep it at a relatively wide angle and point it generally where I want it, and get some photos I really like, but does that mean I never want to or need to see what I"m shooting? Perhaps that"s your style of shooting, and you"re entirely welcome to it, but don"t start telling others how they need to take photos.

Maybe it"s like a comment I saw over in the Canon forum, from a user who claimed he could see just great under all conditons, he didn"t know why people were complaining. Then he said "even out in bright sunlight I can usually make out enough to get the shot". So, therefore "seeing great" is the same as "making out enough to get the shot". Usually.

Or because there are some really nice photos that have been taken with LCD-only cameras (many of them cropped out because the horizon was way off, or other issues they couldn"t see), we should all just write off all the shots they didn"t get?

Let"s say you"re walking along the trail and a bird lands nearby; you smoothly move the camera up and run it to full zoom, hoping to get a shot before he flits off, then you squint and strain trying to see enough so you can tell if that"s a bird or a leaf on the LCD, and if it"s focused on whatever that is, and as he notices the lens, off he flies and you missed your shot. Smiles and moments are fleeting too, and a photo taken a second late can make all the difference in the world.

Some of us like to compose our shots as we shoot, not behind a computer. Some like to have a specific subject in focus, not necessarily what the camera picks the first time. Some might want to shoot directly into a setting sun and see what they"re shooting and how it"s exposed. Some like level horizons, and if you"ve ever shot 16:9 and gotten a crooked horizon, you know how severely you have to crop to clean it up. Some want to catch a smile instead of hoping they"re catching a smile. Some can see clearly at 4" away, some can"t. Some use camera phones and are happy with it, and some aren"t.

I may be happy with point and hope for candid street shooting, because there it makes sense; but that"s only one small part of photography, and there"s nothing wrong with wanting to be able to see what you"re shooting, clearly and easily. To say someone can "learn" to see what they can"t physically see, and should just quit complaining and do it like you do it is pretty presumptious.

A video magnifier, or closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, uses a stand-mounted or handheld video camera to project a magnified image onto a video monitor, a television (TV) screen, or a computer monitor. Cameras with zoom lenses provide variable magnification.
