From the outside, nearly everything about Apple"s iPhone 3GS seems nearly identical to the iPhone 3G released last year. Even Apple"s TV ads make light of this fact: The phone looks the same as before, the company says, but it does so much more. Still, all the new features in Apple"s million-selling new phone have to come from somewhere, and there have been some important changes inside the new iPhone, according to an Apple iPhone 3GS teardown analysis by the market research firm iSuppli.

The company routinely takes apart popular consumer-electronic devices in order to determine the identities of key suppliers and also to estimate the costs of components. Last year a preliminary iSuppli analysis pegged the cost of the previous iPhone, the 3G, at $174.33. These estimates help financial analysts make better-educated guesses about the profit margins manufacturers make on each unit sold, though there are many costs that a teardown doesn"t address, such as software, research and development, and patent licensing costs.

Often the cost to assemble a new generation of a product is lower than it was for the previous generation. However, the 16-gigabyte iPhone 3GS actually costs slightly more to build than last year"s iPhone 3G���$178.96, a difference of $4.63. However, that is much lower than estimates for the first-generation iPhone, which pegged the cost at $220.

The main reason that costs may have gone up is that the price of NAND flash memory���the chips used to store music, video, and applications on the iPhone���have, after years of falling, started to go up just when Apple started packing more memory inside the phone. The 3GS comes in 16- and 32-gigabyte varieties, whereas the prior model topped out at 16 gigabytes. "It used to be that Apple could plan on doubling the amount of memory each year for the same cost," says Andrew Rassweiler, iSuppli"s teardown manager. In the 16-gigabyte model of the 3GS, the cost of the NAND chips is $24, he says, and $46 in the 32-gigabyte version.

Apple (AAPL) is one of the world"s biggest consumers of NAND flash memory, and has cut strategic supply deals since 2005 with chipmakers like Samsung and Hynix, among others, though in the unit used for the teardown the flash supplier was Toshiba (6502.T). "Apple has been one of the key players in driving the cost of flash memory down," Rassweiler says. "In doing so, they"ve also benefited from the price erosion over time." But with demand for flash declining amid a recession, manufacturers have cut back production to the point that prices have started to rise, though demand has yet to pick up. ISuppli is forecasting that overall the market for NAND flash memory will contract to $11.5 billion from $11.7 billion in 2008, before growing again in 2010.

Some components of the new iPhone are cheaper, even though they"ve gotten better. Take the multitouch display. While Apple has improved on the screen by adding an oleophobic coating that doesn"t attract fingerprints and cleans more easily, the cost of the screen and related components have over the past year come down by $1, Rassweiler says, to $16.

Some parts have disappeared completely from the 3GS. A $1.60 Broadcom (BRMC) controller chip connected to the display found in the second-generation iPhone is missing, Rassweiler says, and seems not to have been replaced by anything else. Its function may have been integrated into another chip, either the main applications processor, or a chip from Texas Instruments (TXN) whose precise function in the 3GS hasn"t yet been determined.

Broadcom, having lost one slot, however scored an important win: a $6 chip that handles the iPhone"s WiFi and Bluetooth connections. The same chip, interestingly enough, also includes a tiny FM radio receiver on board, though the iPhone has no FM-receiving features. The chip is used in the Renoir wireless phone from LG Electronics, which does support FM radio.

But before you get excited about your iPhone becoming an FM radio, Rassweiler says there"s no evidence that the FM portion of the chip has been enabled or that it even can be enabled, say, by a new application. However, it"s not uncommon for chipmakers to sell a single chip with several functions and then charge their customer only for the functions that are enabled. Apple had no comment on the chip nor on iSuppli"s estimate.

The main chip that drives all the applications bears an Apple label, Rassweiler says, but was probably made by Samsung. At $14.46, it costs a dollar more than the Samsung chip used in the iPhone 3G, Rassweiler says, in part because it"s made on a more advanced 65-nanometer manufacturing process than the one used in the 3G. But like the other chip, its core���the chip"s central brain���is based on technology designed by ARM Holdings (ARMH), a British chip design company in which Apple used to be an investor. More recently, Apple has bought its own chip company, PA Semi, which is working on chips for use in future versions of the iPhone.

Meanwhile, German chipmaker Infineon (IFX) retained its position as an important supplier to the iPhone, selling Apple the $13 chip that handles the connection to AT&T"s (T) wireless phone network, as well as two others, one that receives signals from GPS satellites and costs $2.25, and another priced at $1.25 that handles power management.

Other suppliers include Cirrus Logic (CRUS), which supplied an audio chip, and Dialog Semiconductor, which provided a power management chip that works with the Samsung applications chip. STMicroelectronics (STM) supplied the accelerometers that detect when the iPhone has been rotated, and they work closely with a silicon compass supplied by AKM Semiconductor, that drives the new compass feature.

Landing a component, even a small one, in the iPhone is important for chip companies because it helps them with marketing to other device manufacturers, Rassweiler says. That often means that Apple gets the best price possible. "When you get a part in the iPhone, there"s a recognition that goes with it, and that can be good for business with others down the road," he says.

The entry level version of Apple’s new baby, the iPhone 3GS 16GB, costs slightly more to manufacture than the original model, despite an almost identical design, yet retails for the same price at $199.

This discovery, among others, was revealed by teardown and device research firm iSuppli, which calculated the bill of materials (BOM) for the iPhone 3GS.

The entry level, 16GB version of the iPhone 3G S carries a BOM cost of $172.46 and a manufacturing expense of $6.50, for a total of $178.96, which is slightly higher than iSuppli’s estimate of $174.33 for the original 8GB iPhone 3G in July 2008.

But Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst for teardown services at iSuppli notes that the same retail price of the two devices means that “the actual price of the phone paid by the service provider is considerably higher, reflecting the common wireless industry practice of subsidizing the upfront cost of a mobile phone and then making a profit on subscriptions.”

This lends some credence to the theory that O2 UK could afford to offer the Nokia N97, the HTC Hero and it looks like the Samsung Jet too, because the carrier has spent all its subsidy budget on the iPhone 3GS.

Moreover, iSuppli’s analysis does not include other costs, including manufacturing, software development, shipping and distribution, packaging, royalty fees and miscellaneous accessories, suggesting that the cost of the 3GS is considerably higher than previous models.

And given that the feature set on the new device is nearly the same as the previous model in the iPhone line, you might think the product’s component selection would be virtually unchanged. But the teardown reveals some interesting changes in the parts and suppliers.

The significant changes are video capture, a 3 megapixel camera, and a digital compass, but otherwise the 3GS hardware feature set is not much different from that of the 3G.

“By leveraging this commonality to optimize materials costs, and taking advantage of price erosion in the electronic component marketplace, Apple can provide a higher-performing product with more memory and features at only a slightly higher materials and manufacturing cost,” Rassweiler said.

Nonetheless, there are a few key differences in component selection compared to the iPhone 3G introduced a year ago. One of the more noteworthy changes is the use of a Broadcom single chip Bluetooth/FM/wifi device, which replaces two separate chipsets; AKM Semiconductor’s electronic compass and STMicroelectronics’ accelerometer; Infineon remained supplier of the phone’s critical baseband chip; while Toshiba scored a big win with its 16GB Multilevel-Cell (MLC) NAND flash memory unit.

iSuppli also said that Samsung maintained its position as iPhone’s applications processor supplier, which is the fourth most costly component in the iPhone 3GS after the NAND flash, the display module and the touchscreen assembly.

As on previous models, all data is stored in flash memory and not in the SIM and it does not offer any options to expand storage. Initially, it was only available in 16 and 32 GB though an 8 GB model was later released, with Apple discontinuing the 16 and 32 GB models, forcing those needing more storage to select an iPhone 4, or buy an older model 3GS.

The iPhone 3GS is powered by an internal 3.7 V 1220 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery and is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles. A battery life indicator in percentage was also exclusive to the iPhone 3GS.

Apple claims that the 3GS can last for up to ten hours of video, nine hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, twelve hours of 2G talk time, or five on 3G, 30 hours of music, or 300 hours of standby.

A magnetometer is also built-in the iPhone 3GS, which is used to measure the strength and/or direction of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the device. Sometimes certain devices or radio signals can interfere with the magnetometer requiring users to either move away from the interference or re-calibrate by moving the device in a figure 8 motion. The iPhone 3GS also features a Compass app that was unique at the time of release, showing a compass that points in the direction of the magnetic field.

In addition to the iPhone 3G"s Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio, the 3GS also adds support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA allowing faster downlink speeds though upload speeds remain the same as Apple had not implemented the HSUPA protocol. Other updates include the addition of a built-in Nike+iPod sensor which eliminates the need for an external sensor and allows native Nike+iPod support. The Bluetooth server on the iPhone 3GS has also been slightly improved adding support for Bluetooth 2.1 specifications.

Voice Control was introduced as an exclusive feature of the iPhone 3GS and allows for the controlling of the phone and music features of the phone by voice. There are two ways to activate Voice Control: hold the Home button while in the home screen for a few seconds; or, change the effect of what double-clicking the home button does so it will activate Voice Control (only on iOS 3.x; on iOS 4 or later, double-clicking the Home button opens the multitasking bar).

VoiceOver, Color Inversion, and Text Zoom were introduced as exclusive features to the iPhone 3GS. VoiceOver is a feature that dictates music details, system menus, text, and other things that were first introduced on the third generation iPod shuffle. Color inversion reverses the color scheme from black on white to white on black, while Text Zoom allows users to zoom into a text on the screen.

The reverse of the iPhone 3G (left) is almost identical to that of the 3GS, except for the latter"s reflective silver text which now matches the silver Apple logo, replacing the 3G"s grey text.

The iPhone 3GS retains the design of the 3G, with a glossy plastic back with tapered edges and metal buttons. The 8 GB version received more favorable reviews mainly because it comes pre-installed with iOS 4. Jason Snell of Macworld praised the iPhone 3GS, saying that "the device"s internal changes shines in the iOS 4 update, making the iPhone 3GS a worthwhile upgrade compared to its predecessor although a little too late compared to the iPhone 4."

Shortly after the release of the iPhone 3GS, some users reported overheating of the device while in heavy use, and others reported discoloration of the device due to heat (particularly on the white models). The discoloration issues were largely discounted as being as a result of iPhone covers rubbing against the back of the iPhone.

Apple responded to the heat issue reports by warning users against leaving their iPhones in a car on a hot day, leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, and refraining from heavy usage while in a hot/sunny environment.

After the release of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS received an update for iOS 4. Unlike the iPhone 3G, it received support for features like home screen wallpapers, multitasking, and Game Center.

The iPhone 3GS received the iOS 5 update, adding support for on-device setup and over-the-air updates, among other features, but it is incompatible with Siri.

On September 9, 2009, Apple launched an updated model of the iPhone 3GS that patched a segment overflow in the SecureROM of the Device that had allowed loading an unsigned LLB.

After the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple updated baseband hardware from an Infineon Baseband chip to a Toshiba Baseband chip in week 2 production in 2011 which removed the end-user"s ability to change basebands. And, June"s excellent Dynamic Island photos like the one above are a pretty clear indication of how he feels, too.

June: I think it"s safe to say that "Dynamic Island" is the worst name for what might be the best iPhone feature in a long time. Also, a pill-shaped notch leading the way for iPhone multitasking was not on my 2022 bingo card. But here we are, an inch of pixels that actually makes me feel like I"m taking full advantage of the iPhone"s glorious OLED display. You know the rest; live activity toggles are refreshing to use, it"s much easier now to skip to the "Na, na, na, nananana" part of Hey Jude, and the overall animations are fun, mesmerizing, and pixel-perfect.

That said, it is my moral obligation as a Gen Z to confirm that after a week of tapping and swiping on the Dynamic Island, smudges are minor and selfies are still king.

While it looks great, it"s a little concerning from a battery perspective because it makes me think the iPhone 14 Pro"s always-on display is using a lot more power than a competitor like the

June: Dear Apple, here"s the fix: allow us to manually set the dimness level of the always-on display or simply transition the home screen into a blacked-out screensaver (with the date and time, of course).

Unless you have a darker, less noisy background, to begin with, the ambient mode can be distracting. For the past decade, iPhones have conditioned me to peek at the display every time a notification wakes it up. And now, Apple wants all of my undivided attention by giving me a display that stays on forever.

It seems like every new feature on the iPhone is just a polished version of something Android devices have had for years. Case in point, the iPhone 14"s always-on display is spectacular and just as practical.

Jason: Make no mistake, if all goes smoothly then the eSIM process on the iPhone 14 makes it far smoother and faster to transfer your phone number from your old iPhone to your new one. Mine took less than 30 seconds in testing it with Verizon. And for the majority of users, I think they"ll be okay with this and will see it as an improvement in most cases -- when it works.

June: Like Jason, my eSIM experience was smooth. I"m one of the more fortunate users who only needed a carrier-provided (AT&T) QR code to register my iPhone 14 Pro tester. I"ve also heard enough accounts from fellow iPhone 14 users to know that success is not guaranteed when switching over to eSIM domestically, let alone during international travel. Once it is set up though, you"ll be surprised how quickly you forget that eSIM is even a thing -- just like how quickly we"ve all forgotten about 5G.

Jason: For years, iPhones have had more processing power than most people will ever need in daily use. This year"s A16 Bionic is the same. If you"re stuck waiting, it"s usually because of Wi-Fi, 5G, or a slow-loading app or website.

June: Besides the improvements to FaceID, I haven"t noticed any major step-ups between this year"s A16 Bionic and last year"s A15. That"s another way of me saying that the iPhone 14 Pro is still powerful, still efficient, and will still be reliable for years down the line.

The new engine really comes to play when I"m snapping those 48MP ProRAW photos and want to make edits straight from the iPhone. The A16 Bionic handles image and computational processing gracefully, with the shutter speed taking seconds faster than the 13 Pro to capture high-res and low-light photos.

June: While the iPhone 14 Pro"s new front-facing camera is better than ever for "slofies," the rear 48MP shooter is what sells the camera experience for me. Thanks to the larger pixels via pixel-binning, there"s an extraordinary level of detail in photos and videos that I"ve never seen before on an iPhone.

Jason: For photography and video enthusiasts, the Action mode (to replace some gimbal shots), the 48MP ProRAW option (for getting detail and editing control like a DSLR or mirrorless camera), and the new 4K 24fps option for Cinematic Mode videos are going to be a lot of fun to start creating with. I"m planning more testing to cover those in greater depth, but definitely take a look at June"s gimbal-busting test.

June: I devoted most of my time testing Action mode, pitting the iPhone 13 Pro"s standard video recording with the iPhone 14 Pro"s enhanced video feature. The improvement between the added hyperstabilization and last year"s tech was noticeable by a wide margin.

In my process of becoming the weird neighbor who runs around with two phones, here are my three Action mode takeaways that you should know about: 1). It can only record up to 2.3K resolution at 30 fps, 2). the framing will be noticeably cropped in for the most optimal stabilization, and 3). the iPhone will nudge you for more lighting even if you"re in a sun-filled living room.

Lastly, allow me to give a nod to the unsung hero of the iPhone 14 Pro camera experience: the improved, 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness. Compared to last year"s 1,200 nits (with HDR), taking photos and videos outdoors has been much more pleasurable with the newer iPhone. (The enhanced brightness also made it clearer to tell whether Action mode was toggled on before I went on my death sprint down the hill.)

Jason: As mentioned above, the always-on display on the iPhone 14 Pro keeps a lot more pixels active than most of its competitors, and that concerned me with battery life. When I learned that the iPhone 14 Pro Max – the model I"ve spent most of my time testing -- has a battery 1% smaller than my iPhone 13 Pro Max from last year (4,323mAh vs. 4,352mAh), I was even more worried.

June: Coming from the iPhone 13 Pro, I had high expectations for the iPhone 14"s battery life. With a more power-efficient A16 Bionic chip, an LTPO OLED display that can dial down to a hertz, and an hour longer of video playback, according to Apple, what could go wrong?

From my week of use, I ended most of my days with around 18-25% battery, which is not as impressive as my iPhone 13 Pro"s 30-35% endurance. Perhaps it was the 5G modem struggling to pull mobile data between subway station to subway station or the new 48MP sensor that"s racking in all that detail at the expense of power. I"m left wanting more from my Pro device and very much envy Jason"s experience with the Max model.

There"s a lot to like about the iPhone 14 Pro, including all the aspects that make it similar to previous generations. But it"s the forward-looking features, like Dynamic Island, Action mode, the new camera sensors, and the rapid eSIM number transfers that will excite tech enthusiasts and professionals the most.

For the first time in a while, the decision to upgrade to the newest iPhone is more about functionality and less about aesthetics. Apple isn"t trying to entice you with flashy new colors, though we wouldn"t hold it against you if you"re a fan of "Deep Purple". Instead, the

There are many "firsts" with the iPhone 14 Pro, and we fully expect features like eSIM rapid portability, always-on display, and Dynamic Island to carry over to the rest of the Apple ecosystem -- and competing products, too. When the iPhone 5s came out, the cost was $198.70 for parts and assembly, and it seems that Apple pushed the boat out a little more with its past upgrades.According to Time, the AppleiPhone 6had a cost of around $200.10. TheiPhone 6scame in at $211.50,according to IHS Technology’s estimates. TheiPhone 6s Pluswas manufactured for $236.

We all know technology manufacturers are in the business they are in to make a profit, so it should be no surprise that there is some markup on a smartphone’s retail price. Compare the retail costs of Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Buying Apple’s handset (with 256gb of storage), SIM-free, and without any contract markdowns or trade-in allowances has a retail price of $1249.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (with 128gb) costs $1399.99 without a trade-in or service provider discount. Manufacturing costs are less than half, but both companies need to compensate for marketing, advertising, research, insurance, labor, and more.

The cheaper LED screen, versus last year’s OLED, costs $66.50 to make while the three-camera setup costs $73.50. Surprisingly, the battery runs just $10.50, but that adds up quickly on a “per phone” basis. The memory, modem, and processor rank in at $159 total and all other components plus assembly tally up to $181.

“These manufacturing types follow Moore’s law―the equipment gets better, the process gets better, the yield improves, and the costs go down,” said iSuppli analyst Wayne Lam in 2014. “But if you look at how those components contribute to the overall BoM, the proportion of the cost remains the same.”

“Handset OEMs typically build around an unspoken BoM budget. If they’re selling a $600 phone, they know that they will throw a lot of resources and cost into the display, memory, and processors,” stated Wayne Lam. “That bucket of costs usually remains steady, since [OEMs] can leverage cost improvements over time.”

A screen that was $40 last year will stay around $40 the following year because they’ve improved the quality or the size. That’s typically how the BoM cost evolves.”

Despite Moore’s law, tech costs don’t necessarily fall with each new version, since manufacturers add better-quality parts or new features. The iPhone’s BoM has steadily increased: the iPhone 3GS was $179, the iPhone 4S $188, and the iPhone 5s was $199, according to IHS iSuppli data. Now, you have the iPhone 11 Pro Max that carries a manufacturing cost of $490.50. It’s a big jump in expenses, but technology is always expanding and evolving.

Non-recurring engineering (NRE) costs are an essential reason that tablets can be made cheaper than smartphones. “The components are very similar,” notes Erensen. “Companies take smartphone designs and leverage them to make tablets―and even portable media players such as Apple’s iPod touch―using the same building blocks.”

IDC analyst Chrystelle Labesque, stated “Vendors adopt different strategies when positioning their products. It’s clear that when Google is pushing the Nexus, it isn’t earning money by selling the device, but by selling the content later. There’s an economic model behind that, which means the different players are earning their money in a different way.”

“Apple has very high margins on the iPhone, and that’s where it drives a lot of its profit―it needs those prices to stay high,” he notes. “Apple can justify it because of demand, the brand name, and the quality of the product. Look at Google and those past Nexus devices―they were trying to showcase Android as a platform and get into as many hands as possible because the company didn’t and still doesn’t makes its money through hardware, but through advertising, search, and the services it ends up providing.

“Amazon’s another good example: it’s almost willing to sell these devices at cost because it knows that once it has them in consumers’ hands, they’re going to use them to purchase content―and even physical goods from Amazon.”

For example, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD retailed for $199, but the BoM was $174, leaving the company with little margin, especially after the marketing and design expenses.

As you can see, there are many factors in determining the retail price of an iPhone and how much it costs to make an iPhone. To most people, it is surprising to see the difference between manufacturing costs and the final retail price, but it boils down to much more than just the components’ expenses.

The new Retina Display Apple uses in iPhone 4 was compared against alternative screens used in competing smartphones, and Dr. Raymond Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies, has offered additional comments about the display comparison.

The test results, published by PJ Jacobowitz of PC Mag, compared Apple"s iPhone 4 with the Motorola Droid X, HTC Droid Incredible and HTC EVO, looking at brightness, contrast, color depth, and color accuracy. Soneira commented on the lab results, which provide the first technical look at the performance of the iPhone 4 Retina Display.

The brightest display was on the iPhone 4, which at 536 cd/m² was found to be twice as bright as the OLED display of HTC"s Droid Incredible. PC Mag said the Incredible measured a "weak 236 cd/m²," and that, "compared to the iPhone 4"s display, the Droid Incredible is very difficult to view outdoors." Other models tested fell about in the middle.

After the results were published, Soneira added that "the iPhone 4 is 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 3GS, which was the previous record holder, so the iPhone 4 is now the brightness king for smartphones."

Explaining that "the difference between the darkest and brightest points on a display is known as contrast," PC Mag reported that iPhone 4 was just slightly better than the Droid X in terms of contrast radio, achieving 1097 vs 1071 on the Droid X. The HTC EVO "offers a little more than half the contrast of these two, just 649."

The HTC Droid Incredible achieves a much higher contrast ratio due to its OLED screen, so while its "not very bight, it can create extremely dark level of blacks which creates contrast that eclipses all of the competition—it measured a staggering 39,373," PC Mag reported.

Soneira added, "Steve Jobs promised a Retina Display Contrast Ratio of 800 and PC Mag measured 1097, 37 percent more than the Apple advertised spec. That"s very impressive because you seldom ever see manufacturers conservatively understate their specs to that degree - but then see my widely reported (and often misquoted) comments on the iPhone 4 Retina Display, where it falls short on that spec. The iPhone 4 is a tremendous improvement over the iPhone 3GS, which only had a measured Contrast Ratio of 138. But note that the Motorola Droid remains the Contrast Ratio king of mobile LCDs with 1436, which I measured in our own DisplayMate Lab tests."

Soneira also said that, "while the iPhone 4 LCD has a significantly lower Contrast Ratio than OLEDs, which typically have Contrast Ratios of 30,000 or more, it"s not particularly relevant for mobile displays because they are typically viewed under bright ambient lighting, where screen reflections of the surrounding ambient light are much greater than the display"s own internal black level. The Contrast Ratio spec only applies for viewing in the dark. The iPhone 4"s bright screen and low reflectance means that it delivers a much higher real screen image Contrast under typical ambient lighting than OLEDs, which are not as bright and have inherently higher screen reflectance than the iPhones. But in dark ambient lighting the OLEDs deliver outstanding Contrast."

Color depth refers to the resolution of color supported by both the display hardware and the operating system software. Of the screens tested, only iPhone 4 and the Motorola Droid X supply screens capable of 24-bit color (16,777,216 colors, which Apple calls "millions" and which Windows refers to a "true color"); HTC"s hardware on the Incredible and EVO can only display 16-bit color (65,535 colors, which Apple calls "thousands" and which Windows refers to a "high color").

In their bundled software however, only the iPhone 4 actually displays 24-bit color. Android"s photo application is crippled to only support 16-bit color, reducing the Motorola Droid X to the same performance as the Incredible and EVO, expressing color banding and jaggies due to their significantly lower color resolution.

In looking at color accuracy, PC Mag wrote that displays should reproduce "100 percent of the sRGB color gamut; no more, no less. Anything more means that the colors being displayed are oversaturated, or punchy. Anything less means that colors are being understaurated, or blah." It called the test "good measure of color accuracy."

The report said the Droid X screen was closest to the desired baseline of color reproduction, with just 6 percent undersaturation; EVO was also close with 10 percent undersaturation. iPhone 4 was undersaturated by 36 percent, a figure similar to previous test results of the iPhone 3GS, while the Droid Incredible was oversaturated by 37%.

Soneira said "the PC Mag lab test result that really surprised and disappointed me was the small iPhone 4 display color gamut, which is only 64 percent of the industry sRGB/Rec.709 standard color gamut that is necessary to obtain accurate color reproduction for videos and photos. As a result all iPhone 4 images will have colors that are somewhat under-saturated and on the weak side. The same was true for the iPhone 3GS and all previous iPhones and iPods. I was really expecting the iPhone 4 to correct that deficiency and perform as well as the Motorola Droid, an IPS LCD that matches the standard color gamut almost exactly and delivers essentially perfect color accuracy images, as good or better than most HDTVs. So the iPhone 4 is disappointing in color saturation and color accuracy, but is state-of-the-art in pixel resolution and sharpness.

"On the other hand, the PC Mag lab tests found that the HTC Droid Incredible had way too large a color gamut and color saturation, the same as the Nexus One and most OLED displays on many phones. While that often gets an initial "wow" response – even from reviewers who should know better – too much image color and coloration in photos and videos is actually visually worse than too little color. So the iPhone 4"s less than ideal weak color is actually visually better and preferable to all of those OLED displays that have excessive color – unless you prefer gaudy colored images."

A reader added the comment, "the color accuracy (sRGB color gamut) of the iPhone is "undersaturated" simply because higher saturation color filters on LCDs attenuate more light. Therefore, you need a brighter backlight behind a higher color saturation filter (e.g. R, G and/or B) to get the same light out of the front as compared with a lower saturation color filter. Since Apple was already taking a big hit on efficiency of the LCD assembly due to the high-resolution display, there was a trade-off made to use lower saturation color filters in order to obtain reasonable battery life in the device."

PC Mag reported "iPhone 4 has the most well-rounded display of our bunch. It offers a completely 24-bit color experience, the brightest screen, and great contrast (for an LCD.) The iPhone 4 could be even better if didn"t Apple didn"t limit its color accuracy."

It awarded Motorola"s Droid X second place, while noting "the HTC Droid Incredible is the master of contrast, but its 16-bit display, oversaturated colors, and lack of brightness for outdoor viewing might turn some people off. The HTC EVO 4G, meanwhile, didn"t excel at anything."

Soneira said DisplayMate Technologies will be reporting its own intensive lab tests on the iPhone 4 display, "with in-depth evaluations and analysis and some comments on how manufacturers can improve their mobile displays." The company produces display optimization, calibration, evaluation, and diagnostic products for consumers, technicians, and manufacturers, used by hundreds of publications worldwide for editorial reviews for every type of display.
