We have been seeing an increasing number of people call in that have cracked screens on their flat panel sets. Most of these reported cases are because of the set being physically struck, or falling off from where it is sitting. There are however, rare cases where cracks develop in a screen through a manufacturer flaw - although this is exclusively limited to plasma televisions. In order to understand how this happens and what the repair costs are, this article will explain what happens when your screen is cracked, and what this means for your wallet.

Most of the reported cases we are seeing are broken LCD screens. The one main drawback on LCD and LED televisions is that the screen itself is very fragile. It won"t take much more than a hard bump and the screen will be permanently damaged. When this happens, you will typically see a spider web looking pattern, or what appears to be broken glass. What you are seeing in fact, is the glass layer that is inside all LCD and LED televisions that has broken, usually with the impact point clearly visible. This kind of damage is only repairable by replacing the entire display screen. Unfortunately, this is the single most expensive part in the set, with the display panel itself costing hundreds of dollars. By the time additional costs such as shipping and installation labor are added, repairs will almost always exceed the cost of a new set. The only cases in which a damaged LCD or LED television screen would be economical to replace, would be if the set is a very expensive ($2,000 or more), or exclusive model. We have seen in rarer cases where some screens are gouged or scratched, but not cracked. This type of damage is not as catastrophic, sometimes resulting in the set still being watchable, but the result is the same....the display screen would still have to be replaced to eliminate this. Also, it is important to keep in mind that this type of damage is NOT covered by any manufacturer warranty. They consider this to be physical abuse, whether it was intentional or not. Extended warranties also will not cover this type of damage.

Plasma televisions are generally a little more resilient when it comes to screen damage. They still can be cracked though by direct impact, falling, or improper transportation. Most of the time when a plasma panel is cracked, it will cause the set not to have a picture (but sometimes still have sound), or not to come on at all. Types of plasma screen damage seem to vary, but the visual clues seem to follow one of two patterns. Most damaged plasma screens that have been struck will exhibit a star like pattern, roughly 1 to 2 inches in diameter. This type of damage will nearly always lead to a no picture or even no power symptom. The second most common type of damage is a stress crack, which usually happens when the set has been overly flexed, by improper transportation, or as a result of an impact that chipped the glass, but did not crack it. When this happens, usually the set will be watchable for a time, but the normal cycle of the panel heating during use, and cooling of during down times will cause the impact point to eventually crack. Regardless of how the damage occurs though, the only way to repair this type of damage, is to replace the plasma panel itself. Similar to the LCD and LED sets, this is the single most expensive part in the set which would make a repair not cost effective. While the cost of replacement plasma panels have come down, they still cost hundreds of dollars, and when you consider that the the price of new plasma televisions have come down a lot in the last few years, you can begin to see why it is not worth it to repair these sets when this kind of damage has happened. Like the LCD and LED televisions, unless your set is very expensive, or a limited model, they are not cost effective to repair for a cracked screen. This type of damage is also not covered by any manufacturer or extended warranty as they do consider this physical abuse.

This problem results in there being one or more white specks on the screen that are present regardless of what channel you are on and what video source you use. What is actually causing this issue is the DLP chip itself which is what actually displays the picture on your screen. The chip is composed of thousands of tiny mirrors that turn on and off to varying degrees to display a picture. When the mirrors are in the full on position, they turn white. Yes, it happens. It was 2013 when I had a phone call from BenQ, a multinational manufacturer of LCD monitors. The project manager mentioned that one kind of LCD TV screen they were currently shipping damage. BenQ team looked for a solution from us to prevent broken TV monitors when shipped because defective products are not what any good business would want to do.

It was BenQ’s biggest embarrassment. They had a factory in mainland China and every time certain models of LCD screens were produced, they would be shipped to PChome Taiwan for sale. However, the recent damage rate of the goods had been abnormally high up to nearly 20%. Taking preventive measures, such as adjustment of packaging materials or structure, etc., there is no significant effect.

The situation became increasingly serious and it’s not just that it was BenQ who noticed this problem; customers’ feedback also showed that their LCD TVs were suffering from abnormal damages when delivered to them. Without any big accidents happening during the transportation or delivery process at all – one could only imagine what was going on inside those.

We had conducted a study on what type of shock can affect the LCD screen and how much damage it entails. We first put types of indicators labels in the box of the LCD panel in order to determine how much force damage would occur during regular shipment and transit.

According to the results of the test, the impact force on the cargo’s bottom is more than the acceleration of 50G, and this impact may damage the screen.

In addition, we observed that these impacts may cause a variety of different damages to screens: scratches on protective glass; or impairing light colors by undergoing color change from long-term use so that they become grayish black patches–which will affect a customer’s viewing experience.

In confirmation of the true cause, BenQ officially imported Impact Labels to adhere to each TV box, as well as to inform all handlers of the impact indicator monitor is in place.

A study shows the damage rate typically drops by 50% or more when a monitor is in place. The TV screens are rarely damaged in this case, which proves the statement.

Who can say ‘no’ to a free TV, even if it’s broken? This was the situation [Andrew Menadue] ended up in last year when he was offered an LG 39LE4900 LCD TV. As [Andrew] describes in the blog post along with videos (see first part embedded after the break), this particular television had been taken to a television repair shop previously after the HDMI inputs stopped working, but due to a lack of replacement parts the owner had to make due with the analog inputs still working. That is, until those stopped working as well.

The nice thing about these TVs is that they are very modular inside, as [Andrew] also discovered to his delight. In addition to the LG controller board, an inverter board and the power supply board, this TV also contained a TCON PCB. After some initial unsuccessful swapping of the parts with EBay replacements, nothing was (surprisingly) working, but it did turn out that the TCON and inverter boards are made and sold by AUO (major Taiwanese display manufacturer), along with the display itself.

In the end it turned out that the AUO boards and screen were fine, and after sourcing a board to convert VGA input to the LVDS signal accepted by the TCON board, the whole display worked. Naturally using a board with HDMI inputs would be nice, but it does show how a ‘broken’ TV can be turned into a really nice, big monitor without all too much effort if it’s just the controller board that went on the fritz.

You cannot "fix" cellphone screens either. You have to replace them just as mostly you have to replace TV screens unless you are lucky and it is a tab problem in the TV that you can get to, which a lot of the times you cannot. You nearly have to treat both of them, cellphone screen and TV screen as a sealed unit.

Also it is a lot more expensive to manufacture a TV screen than a cellphone screen, (more internal components and complicated connections in the screen etc). The screen represents the major cost in the manufacture of the TV and the screens are made to order by specialist TV screen manufacturers for the TV manufacturer, so scale of quantity plays a role in the cost of the unit.

You can however fix TVs as long as the screen still works as there are only a few boards involved. In a way it is easier, if you know which board is faulty, to just swap it with a new one and you"re fixed. You can if you have the knowledge and the schematics still fix individual components on TV boards to fix the problem as well.

Electronics technicians (TV, cell phone, Fridges, microwaves etc etc etc) are disappearing as manufacturers make electronic devices cheaper and less and less "repairable" sometimes to the extent of not even providing spare parts and also because consumers do not wish to pay for the skill and knowledge of the technician to repair an "old" device even if the parts are available. Just do not look at the possibly toxic garbage dump growing behind you.

I have a Sony KDL-32BX310, has no picture or sound. Power light turns from red to green when powered up (no flash codes). Screen shows dim backlight, goes off for about 2 seconds then back on to the dim backlight. I have tried several audio and video inputs. No on screen menus showing. The inner screen of your Samsung 60 inch is most likely damaged and will need to be replaced. And yes it will most likely cost more to replace the screen than get a new TV.

It looks just like someone shot a hole through the glass. However, there is no physical damage at all – the screen is intact, and it hasn’t been hit by anything.

I have a Vizio M3D550KD LED TV that is less then 2 years old and I am getting light horizontal lines with a vertical grid. At the same time the picture will freeze for a second and the sound is good. When I first power up the TV the picture is almost normal for around 30 seconds. I removed the back and reseated the cables and it didn’t help. Any ideas?

The screen freezes for about 2 seconds every 2 – 3 seconds. The audio is ok when the picture freezes. The audio stays in sync with the picture when it unfreezes.

If the Samsung TV screen was hit with a wood stick, then it is cracked and the only solutions are to buy a replacement screen or a new TV. Figure out which is cheaper and go that route.

I have a Samsung 8000 series 55″ LED TV and it’s about 7 years old. Recently it has developed a horizontal light colored line that runs from left to right.
