According to Reuters, the continued losses suffered by the company is due to "sagging prices" for LCD panels across the board. The company also said its production plans in South Korea and China could be impacted by the emerging trade war between the U.S. and China.

LG Display cited "concern for the global smartphone market," as well as the long-term decline of LG"s LCD panel business. The company has been shifting its emphasis towards OLED panels.

A report earlier this month stated that Apple has ordered between 3 and 4 million OLED panels from LG Display, for use in the 2018 generation of iPhones, with LG expected to become the majority supplier of OLED panels for iPhones for 2019, overtaking its rival Samsung.

There had been reports in April of manufacturing delays on LG"s side affecting Apple"s panel diversifaction plans. CSOT has reportedly formed a team to evaluate suitability of its production lines for OLED displays for Apple. According to The Elec, CSOT and Apple recently reviewed an OLED panel produced by its T4 factory in Wuhan, China.

The T4 facility, which can make Gen 6 flexible OLED panels, is designed to house three manufacturing phases that can provide a total of 45,000 substrates per month. Two of those phases are currently live.

Sources told The Elec that if the review OLED panels meets Apple"s standards, CSOT plans to invest in a demo line to make more. Once it evaluates the yield of that line, it will likely mull whether to try to make OLED panels for iPhones or to build yet another line for evaluation.

CSOT had previously supplied Samsung with OLED panels for its Galaxy M models in 2021. In 2022, it plans to produce OLED panels for the Samsung Galaxy A73.

The Elec notes that it is "highly unlikely" that Apple will decide to include CSOT in its supply chain because BOE can already produce panels with the same specifications. In addition, Apple could use BOE as a leverage point to get Samsung Display and LG display to lower their prices.

CSOT isn"t the first company to go through an Apple evaluation process. In 2021, Chinese display maker Visionox also underwent an evaluation but ultimately failed to win OLED panel orders.

I have a mid-2011 model 27" iMac and the LCD panel needs replacing. I purchased a replacement refurbished 27" LCD panel from a supplier in China which has the correct LG part number label on it , LM270WQ1 (SD) (E3), however, when it arrived it had no mounting frame/bracket attached to it, and when I tried to fit the replacement LCD into my existing 27" LCD mounting frame/bracket the replacement LCD panel is slightly to big to fit into it!?

2. Does anyone know it the 2009 or 2010 model 27" iMac LCD mounting frame/bracket fits into a mid-2011 model 27" iMac? By which I mean are all of the screw holes for mounting the LCD panel into the computer casing in the same location (alignment) with all 27" iMacs manufactured in 2009, 2010 and 2011 ?

3. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to overcome the problem? Currently I"m thinking that modifying the LCD frame I currently have may be necessary to resolve this problem, but I"d rather not commence doing frame modifications (potentially cutting the frame/bracket into 2 halves?) if anyone is aware of an easier solution?

The new iMac that Apple launched this week is sure to be a big hit. But if you can get past that super-thin screen, the range of striking colors and the appeal of an all-in-one, you’ll soon see that buying an iMac makes no economical sense - and that’s largely due to competition from Apple itself!

The biggest reason not to buy an iMac comes from a product that Apple launched last year: the Mac mini. Pairing a Mac mini with a dedicated screen instead of buying an iMac will not only save you money for the same computing power, it will future-proof your investment to a much greater degree, too.

To get the exact same computing power as you’ll get from the base model Mac mini ($699), you’ll have to pay $1,499 for the mid-range iMac. This gets you an Apple M1 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, 8GB of memory, and a paltry 256GB of storage. That means you’re paying an $800 premium for the screen and the convenience of the all-in-one form factor, plus the Magic Keyboard that comes with the iMac but not the Mac mini.

If you move up the range slightly, to get 512GB of storage - which I would consider the bare minimum for a new computer these days - then the iMac costs $1,699 and the Mac mini is $899. Once again, that’s an $800 premium.

Take Dell’s 27in 4K UHD monitor, for example. OK, it’s not quite as sharp as the 4,480 x 2,520 iMac display, with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, but give me extra screen space over extra resolution every day. What’s more, the Dell costs only $320, which means you could have two of them side-by-side for a much greater combined resolution and still save $160 on the equivalent iMac.

Even if you really wanted to push the boat out and go for a truly spectacular screen, such as the LG 34WK95U-W Widescreen LCD Monitor - a glorious, 34in ultrawide 5K display with deliciously thin bezels that is perfect for multitasking - that would only cost you $500 more in total.

There’s no doubting the thinness and neatness of the new iMac, but when you’re talking about a desktop computer it’s really the overall footprint that matters. The footprint of pairing a Mac mini with a separate screen - even a bigger screen - really isn’t all that different from that of the new iMac.

What’s more, your old M1 can be pressed into secondary duties, such as acting as a Time Machine backup. It can sit purring away quietly in a corner, unlike the iMac.

Your screen will far outlast the computing power too. Either the Dell or LG monitors mentioned above will likely last you a good five or more years. Most people don’t hang on to computers for that long. And, of course, if something goes wrong with the iMac, you lose both screen and computer. Separates allow you to replace each component when it needs replacing.

The new iMac might be an attractive machine, but when you consider the alternative of Mac mini and dedicated screen, it doesn’t look that attractive at all.

Back last month, Apple held a keynote to reveal some interesting products. The company introduced new iPads, the new iPhone SE 5G, and also an intriguing Studio Display. The latter was basically a display with the hardware of an iPhone and even runs a modified version of iOS 15.4. The device has some semblances with the panel that Apple used in the iMac 27-inch from 2014. According to a report from 9to5Mac, YouTuber Luke Miani decided to further explore these similarities between the two products. He went forward to transform an iMac 27-inch into a Studio display. According to him, the result is impressive, and the final product cost half of the Studio Display. The YouTuber explained his reasons for the project:

“Apple’s new Studio Display is a very interesting product, but at $1,599 it’s arguably terrible. But since there are so few monitors that offer 5K resolution on a 27-inch, that’s not a good idea for some people. It’s the only option. But if you don’t want to spend $1600 on an Apple Studio Display, you can make it yourself!”

The obvious solution is to use Target Display Mode. It’s a feature that lets you use your iMac as an external display for another mac. However, with the release of macOS Mojave, Apple discontinued this feature, and it was never supported by Retina iMacs. Taking this in Mind, Miani set out to convert a 2014 iMac into a standalone, full-fledged external monitor for $600. This process involves completely dismantling the iMac. It requires the user to remove the front panel of the iMac. After this hard process, Miani had to find the right adapter t actually connect the iMac.

The finished product is really impressive. There is even a USB Type-C connector, and the iMac’s built-in webcam is fully functional. The total cost of the project was $829. This is basically half the price of the Studio Display. However, you’ll still miss certain features like the P3 color gamut. However, in the end, it’s an impressive work that saves a good chunky of money.

Apple’s new iMac 27-inch is a beast. Starting at $1,799, with the option to price it up to a bank account-draining $8,799, it’s designed for both everyday users in need of a big-screen desktop that will last and professionals seeking a powerlifter of a computer without having to step up to either the outrageous iMac Pro or Mac Pro.

I’ve been using a decked-out version of Apple’s (AAPL) iMac 27-inch as my work computer for the better part of a month, and it’s proven capable of handling everything I’ve thrown at it. From games to photo editing, it’s never so much as broken a sweat.

The iMac 27-inch uses the same design as the current iMac 21.5-inch, featuring an incredibly thin body and stand that almost makes the display look like it’s floating over your desk. It’s an understated look that instantly makes your desk look classier.

In addition to its display, the 27-inch iMac now gets an improved 1080p FaceTime camera that captures crisp and colorful images. What’s more, Apple says the iMac’s included T2 chip works alongside the system’s three-speaker array to provide enhanced audio quality while video chatting. The new camera is a welcome upgrade, especially with so many people working from home.

Beyond its monster display, the other reason you’re likely looking at the iMac 27-inch is because of its gobs of power. The base version of the desktop comes with a 10th-generation, 6-core Intel (INTC) Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, an AMD (AMD) Radeon Pro 5300 graphics chip and a 256GB solid-state drive. That’s a solid system, for sure, but nowhere near the top of the line version.

The iMac handled everything I threw at it. The system knocked the teeth out of the popular Geekbench 5 CPU benchmarking test, with a score of 1220 for single-core and 9678 for multi-core. It’s hard to quantify benchmarks, though, because they don’t really give you an understanding of what that power means in terms of real-world performance.

To do that, I played a few games including “Tomb Raider,” which the iMac was able to run at 60 frames per second with the settings turned up to ultimate. That’s an older game, which means the system requirements aren’t as high as a newer title — but it still shows how powerful this iMac is.

Oh boy, if I had the money, and Macs ran more games, I’d drop my cash on this monster in a heartbeat. It’s got a fantastic display, wonderful design, and power to spare. For everyone else, the iMac 27-inch will certainly meet their needs and is worth the cash.

Last month, we told you that a bailout of Apple LCD supplier Japan Display was running into some trouble. The company, which produces the Liquid Retina display for the iPhone XR and LCD panels for older models, depends on Apple for 60.6% of its business. Because it was late to enter the OLED market, the company has been bleeding red ink. A Chinese state-run fund and a display producer in Taiwan were ready to inject cash into the company for nearly half of its equity. But that deal has been revised partially due to Japan Display"s worsening financial condition.

Today, Japan"s Asahi reports (via 9to5Google) that Apple will invest $100 million in Japan Display. As part of this bailout, Apple will reportedly increase orders to the supplier for LCD panels, taking business away from its China-based supply chain. The display producer was supposed to receive an injection of $650 million led by China’s state-backed Silk Road Fund and Taiwan panel maker TPK Holding Co.; Japan Display issued a release on Tuesday saying that it still expects to receive this cash infusion but from different investors. TPK and China have pulled out, and have been replaced by a Chinese investment firm called Harvest Technology and Hong Kong investment firm Oasis. Apple"s cash will help Japan Display in the short term while it waits to close on the $650 million restructuring that it still believes will happen. Harvest is expected to put up the equivalent of $500 million with another $150 million coming from Oasis

Besides developing its OLED line too late, Japan Display cut production of the iPhone XR display in December. And while it has continued to lose money, Apple apparently needs to keep the company afloat. Besides producing displays for the iPhone, it does make the OLED screens used on the Apple Watch. This isn"t the first time that the tech giant cut a check to its LCD supplier. Back in 2015, Apple fronted the outfit much of the $1.5 billion it cost to build a new LCD plant, although the timing was bad. Because smartphone manufacturers continue to migrate to OLED from LCD, that factory runs at half capacity. And Apple"s deal with Japan Display called for it to be reimbursed for the $1.5 billion through a percentage of each display sold. Earlier this year, a report noted that Apple is still owed most of the money that it laid out.

There is no disputing that Japan Display needs a bailout. In 2017, the company reported a loss of $260 million that ballooned into a huge $2.3 billion deficit last year. Not coincidentally, the first iPhone to sport an OLED panel (the Apple iPhone X) was launched late in 2017. Last year, Apple released three models and two of them feature OLED displays. We expect to see no changes to the displays for the 2019 iPhone models expected to be unveiled this September. Apple sources the OLED panels used for the iPhone from Samsung and LG. Next year"s iPhones are expected to stick to OLED displays although Japan Display will still be able to supply Apple with LCD panels for older models, just as it does now.
