Happened to the A4 B8 1.8T I bought for my Mrs and returned due to this being one of the problems. For me the whole instrument cluster was replaced. There are places who"d fix it for you for between £200-£300 but they give a maximum of 3-6 months warranty. They fix it by replacing the Leds behind the cluster.
