I think have been using this projector for 4.5 years & it is finally forcing me to get another bulb at 2,930 hours (It turns off after a few minutes of use) I"ve gone through periods of blue streaks around 2,500 hrs., but other than that have been problem free. Well worth it for the time I had it - a 60" LCD was $9k - but now a large LCD might be the way to go, but very happy with my overall experience & happy bulbs have come down a bit & hope a generic bulb will be kind to me.

I purchased my AE700 5.5 years ago and I am still running fine with the original lamp, now at 3200 hours. The picture quality still amazes me particularly with Blu Ray discs. No pixel visibility at any distance. Altogether I have been delighted with this projector. Even if it fails tomorrow I feel that Panasonic have more than given me my money"s worth, and my next projector will definately be a Panny.

Any Problems: The power supply crapped out after 2 years and Panasonic replaced it with no fuss and at no cost under extended warranty. Since then it has run flawlessly.

I was thrilled with the Panasonic PT-AE700U "s performance right out of the box. It was easy to set up and operate. The picture quality was great. The projected worked very well for the first year. I lost a bulb right after my first year and to replace that. About a year later my power supply died on me. I am debating fixing the power supply or cutting my losses with Panasonic and moving on to another company.

I noticed similar blue haze issues with other opinions and am investigating a fix with Panasonic. Dealer / repair shop said if its the optical block you may as well get a new projector.

To me this is a serious product issue if it happens to so many projectors and Panasonic should fix this problem by sending new optical blocks to all owners who ask.

Any Problems: panasonic would not help they wanted 1400.00to fix i am not the only one with this optical problem.unfortunately just purchased new lamp bulb 35hrs.of use i am now selling on e-bay. just purchased a sanyo. stickum28@aol.com

Any Problems: Starting to develop a blue haze in lower left corner that is getting worse and moving toward center every day. I think it"s the LCD and only estimate that I can get without giving Panasonic another $130.00 is around $1000.00. THIS WILL BE MY LAST PANASONIC PRODUCT EVER.

I have now had my Panasonic AE700 for 3 years and it is still performing flawlessly. The bulb is now pushing the 2000 hour mark and has dimmed slightly. At 18 months there was a power supply problem, which was very promptly fixed by Panasonic under the extended warranty. Overall I am very pleased with this projector and Panasonic"s service, it has given me and my family the opportunity to see hundreds of classic movies with a theater like experience on a 120 inch screen. There is no way I could go back to watching movies on a TV screen, even a 65 inch one!

Unit repair required after 11 months. Unit did not turn on. When turned on it turned off on it"s own (with bulb still good). Two PCBs were replaced - Part numbers TXANP02VJY7 and ETXMM519MBGB. I think they"re PC boards. Lucky stil was under warranty. Base warranty from Panasonic should be more than 1 year. Did not buy extended coverage which is overly expensive. Next major purchase will pay with a credit card which has warranty extension protection and doubles manufacturer warranty up to one year.

The PANASONIC PT-AE700E original bulb inside includes a bulb from one of the OEM manufacturers (Osram P-VIP, Philips UHP, Ushio, Matsushita, Iwasaki HSCR) and has plastic housing from a generic manufacturer. This is a very reliable solution and is cheaper than the original manufacturer option. We recommend it thanks to its reliability and affordable price.

The PANASONIC PT-AE700E generic lamp with housing includes generic plastic housing and a generic bulb from an authorised manufacturer of generic lamps. It is a cheaper solution recommended for in-home use, where projection quality and reliability are not as crucial. Even though generic lamps are not necessarily of the same quality as original manufacturer lamps, their price is nevertheless very attractive.

The original PANASONIC PT-AE700E lamp is a bare bulb from one of the OEM manufacturers (Osram P-VIP, Philips UHP, Ushio, Matsushita, Iwasaki HSCR) and is designed to replace the lamp in your existing lamp housing. This solution is cheaper than a lamp with housing, although it requires a certain amount of manual skills. This option is recommended for customers who already have some experience with bare bulb replacement.

The Panasonic PT-AE700E doesn"t really stand out in the style sweepstakes, but it"s not hideous either. It"s a no-nonsense, clean looking silver box, with its only apparent design element the vertical air output grilles on the left side of the front face. These nicely balance the lens, the tiny remote control signal receptor and a small joystick lens control on the right side. The front facing exhaust fan also means that the projector can be placed on a narrower site than those with side vents. The unit is quite light, weighing only 3.6kg so it"s quite easy to move around if you so desire. Note that there"s no included carrying case, however.

The PT-AE700E is easy to set up and operate, so you won"t have to spend hours reading the manual before you"re up and running. Its 2x optical zoom lens lets you adjust the image size to match the room layout and screen dimensions. It has a wide range of throw distances so that even in a fairly large room, you can get an extremely good quality image whether you"re setting it up on a coffee table in front of your viewing position, or above and behind it.

Setting up a projector can be difficult in odd shaped rooms (such as the one this was test in), but the PT-AE700E simplifies that complication with the inclusion of a joystick vertical and horizontal lens shift control. So if you have to set up the projector on a bookshelf that isn"t quite square on to your screen, you can move the image, without moving the projector. Horizontally, the lens can be shifted a maximum of 25 per cent of the width of the screen and vertically up to 63 per cent of the height of the screen. If you"re adjusting both positions of the projected image, the percentage of movement is roughly halved. Since the lens moves within the projector housing, there is no distorion of the on-screen image, unlike adjustmenst with digital keystone correction -- although the projector does have a vertical keystone distortion which can be corrected to ±30° of the angle of tilt.

It has the standard array of terminals for DVD players, PCs and game machines (including Scart), but unlike most low end projectors, the PT-AE700E is somewhat future-proofed in its inclusion of HDMI input. Unfortunately, the HDMI cable is not part of the package, but if you invest in one, you"ll be compatible with all high-definition digital sources. If you have DVI sources, DVI - HDMI adapters are available. It also has a trigger terminal, so you can connect it to devices such as an electric screen. No stand-alone audio capabilities though.

With some advanced technology and the PT-AE700E"s high-definition 1,280x720-pixel resolution, Panasonic has pushed LCD technology to a very high level. The 1000 lumen lamp and its "Dynamic Iris" optical system with AI techology yield brightness and colour variations that are quite subtle, so images seem very realistic

Panasonic says the intended lamp replacement interval is 3000 hours, which is neither at the top nor bottom end of the lamp-life scale, but it does drive down the cost per viewing hour.

All up, we couldn"t find much to complain about with the Panasonic PT-AE700E. There are certainly cheaper home cinema projectors on the market, but for its image quality, ease of set-up and HD widescreen capabilities, this projector leaves many of its more fancied and more expensive competitors for dead.

Take the subject of this test: the Panasonic PT-AE700E. It is an LCD projector, but an unusually refined one. It is well built and extremely quiet, at least until you hit the off switch and the fan goes into overdrive to dump excess heat as quickly as it decently can.

At the heart of the PT-AE700E is a group of three active matrix 16:9 LCD panels with 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution. The optical system is good for a 1,000 ANSI Lumens output, while contrast radio is a wholly exceptional 2,000:1 which is right up there in DLP territory.

Better still, the Panasonic includes something called Smooth Screen technology, the effect of which is to banish the grid structure associated with LCDs - almost.

From a normal viewing distance, the picture looks crisp and clean, though from close up there is clearly some structure in the way adjacent pixels appear to almost overlay each other, but this is far preferable to the conventional LCD chicken wire effect.

Despite some niggles about the accuracy of some of the colour range, colour reproduction generally was well saturated and realistic. Contrast also appears to live up to expectations. But the Panasonic is not as bright as some competing projectors. It doesn"t really have the on-screen punch to double as a surrogate TV display in a dimmed, but not fully blacked out room.

To add some spice to the value rating, the projector is supplied with a 16:9 wall/ceiling mount black backed beaded matt finish (phew!) projection screen measuring 814 x 1,440 mm when open.Panasonic PT-AE700E: Price Comparison

*1 The projector uses a type of liquid crystal panel that typically consists of millions of pixels. This panel is built with very high-precision technology to provide the finest possible image. Occasionally, a few pixels may remain turned on (bright) or turned off (dark). Please note that this is an intrinsic characteristic of the manufacturing technology that affects all products using LCD technology.

This is the first of a new breed of affordable projectors, and so far looks to be “best of class” as a result it earns a Hot Product Award. I expect there will be at least one or two other new HT projectors coming to market in the price range that will rival the Panasonic AE700U projector and also earn the award.

The Panasonic AE700U offers many significant improvements over its predecessor, including the addition of optical lens shift for easier placement (a feature the Sanyo offered), a new, zoom lens with tremendous range – again simplifying placement, and a claimed best contrast of 2000:1, approaching that of DLP projectors, and a significant improvement from last year’s 1300:1. Panasonic continues to use its digital reality circuitry to enhance contrast, along with an electronic iris that continuously adjust the lens from frame to frame, to improve black levels and dynamic
