“The chip making facility for thin-film transistor LCD panels is being planned in one of the Indian states and the investment will be minimum of Rs1,000 crore to begin with," Venugopal Nandlal Dhoot, Videocon’s chairman and managing director said.

Videocon is discussing the semiconductor project with the governments of several states including West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh and is looking for the best incentive package, Dhoot said at the sidelines of an industry meeting.

Videocon says it will export chips to other LCD makers Sharp, Samsung Electronics, LG, Philips Display. “The chip facility will not only cater to our captive consumption but also to growing global markets for LCD panels. We are expecting to achieve at least $100 million (Rs440 crore) exports from this facility per annum," Dhoot told Mint.

Videocon is currently setting up a new LCD panel manufacturing facility in Italy at an investment of Rs6,100 crore with an annual capacity of 5.76 million displays. Videocon had established a strong manufacturing base in Italy through its acquisition of Thomson"s television-making assets for $288 million in June 2005. These facilities include cathode ray tubes, colour picture tubes and plasma televisions.

Videocon is trying to cotton on to the growing demand for LCD and plasma televisions globally, an analyst said. “Videocon"s chip facility not only suffices huge internal consumption requirements, but also enables it to cater to the growing global markets. Compared to Taiwan and China, where most of the LCD facilities are now located, India offers the advantage of low manpower costs," said Y.S. Shashidhar, vice-president at consultant Frost & Sullivan.

After becoming one of the largest global producers of cathode ray tubes (CRT), consumer electronics major Videocon Industries is beefing up its presence in LCD (liquid crystal display) panel manufacturing.

The LCD television segment is the fastest growing one in the TV sector. Analysts estimate that it would grow at a compounded rate of 70 per cent for the next four-five years. Videocon Industries would be investing ¤300 million through equity participation in the venture, while euro 700 million will be raised through bank loans.

Spread across 150 acres, the LCD facility is expected to employ close to 1,000 people and have an annual capacity of 5.76 million LCD panels - four times its current production in Italy.

Videocon is already present in Italy through its acquisition of durables maker Thomson"s assets. In 2005, Videocon Industries acquired the Thomson CRT plant and CRT research and development facilities at Anagani, Italy.

Videocon has also re-engineered the Thomson plant at a cost of 300 million euros and invested about 171 million euros for research and development of plasma television sets. Currently, the company has a manufacturing capacity of 1.3 million in Italy which includes CRT televisions along with LCD and plasma televisions.

The company started the first line of production in 2005 while the third production line for plasma televisions and airconditioners commenced in 2007. Earlier, the Italian government had supported Videocon"s acquisition of Thomson by offering a grant of 65 million euros.

The government also pitched in with taking care of manpower costs when the company was retraining employees at the Thomson facility. Videocon has retrained 700 personnel (50 per cent of the workforce) through local universities and training institutes.

KOLKATA: Consumer durables major Videocon Industries is poised to roll out LCD monitors and televisions from its Taratola factory in Kolkata from September. Senior officials at Videocon Displays Research Co Ltd, which is Videocon���s wholly-owned subsidiary based in Japan, are camping in the city-based LCD factory to give final shape to the company���s plans to manufacture some 3.5 lakh LCD monitors and televisions annually in Kolkata.

Indications are Videocon will market these LCDs and televsions both in the domestic market and overseas. Videocon Displays Research Co is engaged in development of LCD displays and construction of new productlines. The Japanese subsidiary is the technology supplier for manufacture of these LCD monitors and televisions. Videocon has invested Rs 120 crore at its Taratola plant after it acquired it from Philips Electronics India Limited a few years ago. Trial manufacturing is underway and commercial production will start in September.

A senior official at Videocon Industries told ET: "The LCD manufacturing unit employs 100-odd people, of which 50% are women. Japanese officials from Videocon Displays are in Kolkata to expedite the manufacturing process." Incidentally, the total market of LCD and flat screen TV sets is around 7 lakh units per annum and is set to double in the next few years. "It is expected that by 2012, the demand for LCD TVs will surpass the demand for CRT Tvs in India," the official added. At present, Videocon manufactures some 50,000 TVs per month at its Salt Lake factory.

While work at the Taratola factory is proceeding at a rapid pace, Videocon has appointed real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield to market its upcoming IT facility at Salt Lake. The company aims to create 1 million square feet (sq. ft) of infospace by calender 2010. "According to our existing plan, we will create a total of 3.8 million sq ft of space for the IT & ITeS industry by 2012," the Videocon official added.

Cushman & Wakefield has also been assigned the task of marketing Videocon���s upcoming IT SEZ at Dabgram in Siliguri. "The IT SEZ, which is spread over some 25 acres, will be completed by 2011," the official said.
