Officially, Chinese New Year only lasts for a week but manufacturing companies in China and their offices usually shut down 10 days before to give workers time to travel home. This means that in the weeks leading up to the holiday there is a big rush to manufacture and ship products before businesses shut down. This rush can lead to increased costs and a much longer lead and shipping time.

It can also take businesses up to a month to return to normal after Chinese New Year as after the holiday it is very common that people either change jobs or not return to their job at all. This leads to longer production and shipping times as manufacturers try to find new employees.

Plan early –In order to make sure your business doesn’t suffer any losses during Chinese New Year, you need to plan. Take a look at your sales from previous years at the time the holiday will be and figure out how much inventory you’ll need. You’ll also need to order your products well in advance, because of all of the problems that could happen with the shipping before and after Chinese New Year. If there are any problems with this inventory (quality, shipping times, etc) make sure you contact your manufacturer in China straight away.

Air freight – This is where your products are shipped via an air carrier, which may be commercial or charter. One of the disadvantages when shipping your products with an air freight is that it is very expensive, because this is an ‘airport-to-airport’ service you will have to pay separate haulage fees. However, businesses use this option when they have a lot of products they need shipped and they need them fast.

Air Courier – This is where a courier company (UPS, FedEx, DHL, TNT etc) will get your product from your manufacturer in China to your business. It’s a door-to-door service, meaning that you book the shipment and then just wait for it to arrive. Air courier is the fastest and easiest option, so the majority of businesses use this option. The main advantage of this service is that the courier takes care of everything for you, they do the paperwork and will invoice you for any customs duty when your product arrives. Cost is again the major disadvantage when using an air courier, as it can get very expensive depending on how many products you want shipped and how big they are.

Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. In January 2019, Foxconn said it was reconsidering its initial plans to manufacture LCD screens at the Wisconsin plant, citing high labour costs in the United States.

On 18 May 2016, FIH Mobile announced the purchase of Microsoft Mobile"s feature phone business. Microsoft Mobile Vietnam is also part of the sale to FIH Mobile, which consists of the Hanoi, Vietnam manufacturing facility. The rest of the business has been sold to a new Finland-based company HMD Global, which started developing and selling new Nokia-branded devices in early 2017.

China’s share of the world"s large display market is expected to exceed 50 percent for the first time ever. This year, Samsung Display and LG Display pull the plug on their LCD panel businesses due to declining profitability, letting China further strengthened its LCD market dominance.

Market research firm Sigmaintell said BOE Technology Group Co Ltd－a leading Chinese supplier of display products and solutions－became the world"s largest shipper of LCD TV panels for the first time in 2019.

The Beijing-based company shipped 53.3 million units of LCD panels in 2019, with production capacity increasing by more than 20 percent on a yearly basis.

The consultancy said the LCD TV panel production area of Chinese manufacturers will account for more than 50 percent of the global total this year, surpassing South Korean competitors who are accelerating the shutdown of large-sized LCD panel production capacity due to competition from Chinese manufacturers.

It estimated the production capacity of large-sized LCD panels will continue to increase in China over the next three years. In addition, global LCD TV panel shipments stood at 283 million pieces last year, a slight decrease of 0.2 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the shipment area was 160 million square meters, an increase of 6.3 percent year-on-year.

"Chinese companies have gained an upper hand in large-screen LCD displays. Samsung and LG"s decision to exit from the LCD sector means Chinese panel makers will take a dominant position in this field," said Li Dongsheng, founder and chairman of Chinese tech giant TCL Technology Group Corp.

Data consultancy Digitimes Research said it comes as little surprise that Samsung has opted to withdraw from the LCD panel sector as its LCD business was losing money in every quarter of 2019 due to challenges from Chinese competitors.

BOE said its Gen 10.5 TFTLCD production line achieved mass production in Hefei, Anhui province, in March 2018. The plant mainly produces high-definition LCD screens of 65 inches and above. With a total investment of 46 billion yuan ($6.5 billion), the company"s second Gen 10.5 TFT-LCD production line launched operations in Wuhan, Hubei province, in December.

The Gen 11 TFT-LCD and active-matrix OLED production line of Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology, a subsidiary of TCL, officially entered operations in November 2018, producing 43-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch LCD screens.

OLED is a relatively new technology and part of recent display innovation. It has a fast response rate, wide viewing angles, super high-contrast images and richer colors. It is much thinner and can be made flexible, compared with traditional LCD display panels.

There’s a decent chance Samsung-branded LCD flat panels used in digital signage jobs were already being manufactured by other companies, but that will definitely be the case going forward, as Samsung Display exits the LCD display manufacturing business and turns fully to third-party suppliers for that product line.

The Korea Times reports Samsung Display will close its LCD manufacturing business in June, and instead market flat panels made by third-party suppliers, like China’s BOE Technology Group and Taiwan’s AU Optronics. Samsung had been signalling it was getting out of direct manufacturing by the end of this year, but that decision has been accelerated by falling LCD prices that make direct manufacturing unprofitable.

Samsung will instead focus on quantum dots displays, which have visual quality levels that rival OLEDs. Samsung is already using quantum dots as the key enhancing component to its premium QLED displays, which are LCDs with a quantum dots layer. But the company is also developing QD-OLEDS, which like the acronym suggests are quantum dots integrated with OLEDs to make hybrid panels. The main attribute with quantum dots is that technology is its ability to amplify brightness, which has been something of a limiter for OLEDs.

The curious situation of display manufacturers being both mortal enemies and business partners is evident with multiple reports that Samsung will also market OLED panels, buying versions badged as Samsung from rival LG. In another twist, Samsung is said to be the original manufacturer of premium QD-OLED Sony TVs.

Samsung has been in the LCD business for three decades and was once the largest LCD TV panel supplier on the planet, but its market share is now just roughly two percent as lower cost, government-supported Chinese manufacturers have emerged and largely taken over.
