I don"t actually have a display at present. I purchased a 7in one some months ago. It had an LT7381 controller and was supplied with a Hunda LT7381 library for Arduino and some basic display design software. However, I couldn"t get the hardware to work despite it being described as Arduino compatible. As it turned out, it also didn"t display anything when used with the supplied USB adaptor and design software for the PC, so it may have been faulty anyway. I posted something at the time but the controller is quite new and there was not much feedback. I ended up sending it back and getting a refund although it still cost me to send it back to china.
The reason I posted was because the project is now at the stage where the LCD display really needs to be added and I intended to get advice before making another purchase. In the meantime I have been working on the project using a 20x4 display.
Thank you for that information. Since I am using an ESP8266, it sounds like I need to look for a board that uses SPI for the display. From what I can tell, it seems that some of the cheap ones from china only use SPI only for the SD card which further confuses things.
I don"t posses an Arduino shield which is why I was trying to ascertain whether I need something like that. What is their purpose? A lot of photos show the display plugged into one and then into typically a Mega 2560. I don"t understand what the purpose of the shield is? Is it just a convenient way to provide a means of fitting the board to an Arduino with level shifting? SPI needs only 4 wires. Can"t these be connected directly to the ESP SPI pins?
Run this code and it will tell you the free memory at the start of loop() and at the end. The first number will be lower as memory has not been consumed yet by vaiables etc. However this number should stay the same on the next loop as the variables memory is recovered automatically at the end of the loop.
1. Thermal problems in the display. The backlight LEDs on some displays have very low (or none!) current limiting resistors, so the LEDs get hot and this heat upsets the nearby COG (chip on glass) driver IC. Simple test is "feel it with a finger near the display ribbon. This is exacerbated by using high SPI clock rates. If you have a "hair dryer" you can gently heat your setup with hot air as a test.
Ok, that was quick. No, there is no apparent memory leak. The display goes crazy much faster without the delay, so I had to introduce a 5000ms delay to read it. 326552 bytes before and 326584 bytes after each print, never changing each pass of the loop.
No! For about the price of a familiar 2x16 LCD, you get a high resolution TFT display. For as low as $4 (shipping included!), it"s possible to buy a small, sharp TFT screen that can be interfaced with an Arduino. Moreover, it can display not just text, but elaborate graphics. These have been manufactured in the tens of millions for cell phones and other gadgets and devices, and that is the reason they are so cheap now. This makes it feasible to reuse them to give our electronic projects colorful graphic displays.
There are quite a number of small cheap TFT displays available on eBay and elsewhere. But, how is it possible to determine which ones will work with an Arduino? And what then? Here is the procedure:ID the display. With luck, it will have identifying information printed on it. Otherwise, it may involve matching its appearance with a picture on Google images. Determine the display"s resolution and the driver chip.

Download and install the driver library. On a Linux machine, as root, copy the library archive file to the /usr/share/arduino/libraries directory and untar or unzip it.
Load an example sketch into the Arduino IDE, and then upload it to the attached Arduino board with wired-up TFT display. With luck, you will see text and/or graphics.
We"ll begin with a simple one. The ILI9163 display has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. With 8 pins in a single row, it works fine with a standard Arduino UNO or with a Mega. The hardware hookup is simple -- only 8 connections total! The library put together by a smart fella, by the name of sumotoy, makes it possible to display text in multiple colors and to draw lines.
Note that these come in two varieties, red and black. The red ones may need a bit of tweaking to format the display correctly -- see the comments in the README.md file. The TFT_ILI9163C.h file might need to be edited.
It is 5-volt friendly, since there is a 74HC450 IC on the circuit board that functions as a level shifter. These can be obtained for just a few bucks on eBay and elsewhere, for example -- $3.56 delivered from China. It uses Henning Karlsen"s UTFT library, and it does a fine job with text and graphics. Note that due to the memory requirement of UTFT, this display will work with a standard UNO only with extensive tweaking -- it would be necessary to delete pretty much all the graphics in the sketch, and just stay with text.
on the far side of the display. It has 220x176 resolution (hires!) and will accept either 3.3 or 5 volts. It will work hooked up to an Uno, and with a few pin changes, also with a Mega. The 11-pin row is for activating the display itself, and the 5-pin row for the SD socket on its back.
This one is a 2.2" (diagonal) display with 176x220 resolution and parallel interface. It has a standard ("Intel 8080") parallel interface, and works in both 8-bit and 16-bit modes. It uses the S6D0164 driver in Henning Karlsen"s UTFT library, and because of the memory requirements of same, works only with an Arduino Mega or Due. It has an SD card slot on its back
This one is a bit of an oddball. It"s a clone of the more common HY-TFT240, and it has two rows of pins, set at right angles to one another. To enable the display in 8-bit mode, only the row of pins along the narrow edge is used. The other row is for the SD card socket on the back, and for 16-bit mode. To interface with an Arduino ( Mega or Due), it uses Henning Karlsen"s UTFT library, and the driver is ILI9325C. Its resolution is 320x240 (hires!) and it incorporates both a touch screen and an SD card slot.
Having determined that a particular TFT display will work with the Arduino, it"s time to think about a more permanent solution -- constructing hard-wired and soldered plug-in boards. To make things easier, start with a blank protoshield as a base, and add sockets for the TFT displays to plug into. Each socket row will have a corresponding row next to it, with each individual hole "twinned" to the adjacent hole in the adjoining row by solder bridges, making them accessible to jumpers to connect to appropriate Arduino pins. An alternative is hard-wiring the socket pins to the Arduino pins, which is neater but limits the versatility of the board.
In step 5, you mention that the TFT01 display can"t be used with the UTFT library on an Arduino Uno because of its memory requirements. It can - all you have to do is edit memorysaver.h and disable any display models you"re not using.

Tho I realize this is quickly becoming legacy hardware, these 8,16 bit parallel spi with 4 wire controller 3.2in Taft touch display 240x380. It has become very inexpensive with ally of back stock world wide so incorporating them into any project is easier then ever. Sorry to my question. I’m having difficulty finding wiring solution for this lcd. It is a sd1289 3.3 and 5v ,40 pin parallel 8,16 bit. I do not want to use a extra shield,hat or cape or adapter. But there’s a lot of conflicting info about required lvl shifters for this model any help or links to info would be great .. thank you. I hope I gave enough information to understand what I’m adoing
#1 you need a data sheet for the display and pinout and the i/o board attached to the cable.Than before you buy check for a driver for this chip Raydium/RM69071.if no driver lib are you able to write one and do you have the necessary tools to work on this scale to wire it up ..if you answer no than search for an arduino ready product.WCH0

Thanks for the wealth of knowledge! It is amazing at what is possible with items the average person can easily acquire. I hope to put some of your tips to use this winter as I would like to build sensors and other items for home automation and monitoring. Being able to have small displays around the house in addition to gathering and controlling things remotely will help the family see room conditions without going to the computer. The idea of a touchscreen control for cheap is mind blowing.

In this Arduino touch screen tutorial we will learn how to use TFT LCD Touch Screen with Arduino. You can watch the following video or read the written tutorial below.
As an example I am using a 3.2” TFT Touch Screen in a combination with a TFT LCD Arduino Mega Shield. We need a shield because the TFT Touch screen works at 3.3V and the Arduino Mega outputs are 5 V. For the first example I have the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, then for the second example an RGB LED with three resistors and a push button for the game example. Also I had to make a custom made pin header like this, by soldering pin headers and bend on of them so I could insert them in between the Arduino Board and the TFT Shield.
Here’s the circuit schematic. We will use the GND pin, the digital pins from 8 to 13, as well as the pin number 14. As the 5V pins are already used by the TFT Screen I will use the pin number 13 as VCC, by setting it right away high in the setup section of code.
I will use the UTFT and URTouch libraries made by Henning Karlsen. Here I would like to say thanks to him for the incredible work he has done. The libraries enable really easy use of the TFT Screens, and they work with many different TFT screens sizes, shields and controllers. You can download these libraries from his website, RinkyDinkElectronics.com and also find a lot of demo examples and detailed documentation of how to use them.
After we include the libraries we need to create UTFT and URTouch objects. The parameters of these objects depends on the model of the TFT Screen and Shield and these details can be also found in the documentation of the libraries.
So now I will explain how we can make the home screen of the program. With the setBackColor() function we need to set the background color of the text, black one in our case. Then we need to set the color to white, set the big font and using the print() function, we will print the string “Arduino TFT Tutorial” at the center of the screen and 10 pixels down the Y – Axis of the screen. Next we will set the color to red and draw the red line below the text. After that we need to set the color back to white, and print the two other strings, “by HowToMechatronics.com” using the small font and “Select Example” using the big font.
So the drawDistanceSensor() custom function needs to be called only once when the button is pressed in order to draw all the graphics of this example in similar way as we described for the home screen. However, the getDistance() custom function needs to be called repeatedly in order to print the latest results of the distance measured by the sensor.
In order the code to work and compile you will have to include an addition “.c” file in the same directory with the Arduino sketch. The Arduino board has a wide variety of compatible displays that you can use in your electronic projects. In most projects, it’s very useful to give the user some sort of feedback from the Arduino.
With the TFT display you can display colorful images or graphics. This module has a resolution of 480 x 320. This module includes the SD card socket and SPI FLASH circuit.
This is a tiny display with just 1 x 0.96 Inch. This display has a black background, and displays characters in white. There are other similar displays that can show the characters in other colors.
As a 2.4inch TFT display module with a resolution of 240 * 320, it uses the SPI interface for communication. LCD has an internal controller with basic functions, which can be used to draw points, lines, circles, and rectangles, and can display English, Chinese as well as pictures.
For most LCD controllers, the communication mode of the controller can be configured, usually with an 8080 parallel interface, three-wire SPI, four-wire SPI, and other communication methods. This LCD uses a four-wire SPI communication interface, which can greatly save the GPIO port, and the communication speed will be faster.
Note: Different from the traditional SPI protocol, the data line from the slave to the master is hidden since the device only has a display requirement.
Framebuffer uses a video output device to drive a video display device from a memory buffer containing complete frame data. Simply put, a memory area is used to store the display content, and the display content can be changed by changing the data in the memory.

Note: This tutorial was written after Arduino has officially launched its support for ESP32 boards. So if you have followed the old method of using GIT to install the boards then you would have to follow these steps again (highly recommended) if you need support for new libraries. If you are working with ESP32 for first time you do not have to worry about this.

Espressif Systems launched the ESP8266-01 long back which opened doors to many hobbyists to get into the world of IOT, since then the community has been developing strongly and many products has hit the market. Now the launch of ESP32 Espressif has taken things to a new level. This tiny cheap 8$ module is a dual core 32-bit CPU with built in Wi-Fi and dual-mode Bluetooth with sufficient amount of 30 I/O pins for all basic electronics projects. All these features are very easy to use, since it can be programmed directly from the Arduino IDE. Exiting enough... So let’s start programming ESP32 with Arduino IDE and then you can try all the interesting IoT based projects using ESP32.
Boot Button:This button is used to upload the Program from Arduino to the ESP module. It has to be pressed after clicking on the upload icon on the Arduino IDE. When the Boot button is pressed along with the EN button, ESP enters into firmware uploading mode. Do not play with this mode unless you know what you are doing.
Blue LED: The Blue LED on the board is connected to the GPIO pin. It can be turned on or off through programming. In some Chinese cloned boards like mine, this led might also be in red colour.
This step can be skipped by users who are using ESP32 with Arduino for the first time. For others who have already installed ESP32 board on Arduino using GIT have to delete the Espriff folder from Arduino Directory.
STEP 1:Now, let’s get started. The first step would be to download and install the Arduino IDE. This can be done easily by following the link https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software and downloading the IDE for free. If you already have one make sure it is of the latest version.
STEP 2:Once installed, open the Arduino IDE and go to Files -> Preferences to open the preferences window and locate the “Additional Boards Manager URLs:” as shown below
STEP 4: Go back to Arduino IDE and under Tools -> Port select the Port to which your ESP is connected to. Once selected you should see something like this on the bottom left corner of the IDE.
The program is very similar to the Arduino blink code hence I am not explain them in detail. But one change is that, here in ESP32 the LED on board is connected to pin number 2, while for Arduino it will be connected to pin number 13.

Size of displays affects your project parameters. Bigger Display is not always better. if you want to display high-resolution images and signs, you should choose a big size display with higher resolution. But it decreases the speed of your processing, needs more space and also needs more current to run.
After choosing the right display, It’s time to choose the right controller. If you want to display characters, tests, numbers and static images and the speed of display is not important, the Atmega328 Arduino boards (such as Arduino UNO) are a proper choice. If the size of your code is big, The UNO board may not be enough. You can use Arduino Mega2560 instead. And if you want to show high resolution images and motions with high speed, you should use the ARM core Arduino boards such as Arduino DUE.

The LCDs manufacturers use different drivers in their products. Some of them are more popular and some of them are very unknown. To run your display easily, you should use Arduino LCDs libraries and add them to your code. Otherwise running the display may be very difficult. There are many free libraries you can find on the internet but the important point about the libraries is their compatibility with the LCD’s driver. The driver of your LCD must be known by your library. In this article, we use the Adafruit GFX library and MCUFRIEND KBV library and example codes. You can download them from the following links.

There are also some additional connections to the display. One of them, DC, sets the display into either Data or Command mode. Another, BL, is a control for the display’s backlight.

Another difference is simply with the labeling on the display. There are two pins, one labeled SDA and the other labeled SCL. At a glance, you would assume that this is an I2C device, but it isn’t, it’s SPI just like the Waveshare device.
This display can be used for the experiments we will be doing with the ESP32, as that is a 3.3-volt logic microcontroller. You would need to use a voltage level converter if you wanted to use one of these with an Arduino Uno.
The Arduino Uno is arguably the most common microcontroller on the planet, certainly for experiments it is. However, it is also quite old and compared to more modern devices its 16-MHz clock is pretty slow.
The Waveshare device comes with a cable for use with the display. Unfortunately, it only has female ends, which would be excellent for a Raspberry Pi (which is also supported) but not too handy for an Arduino Uno. I used short breadboard jumper wires to convert the ends into male ones suitable for the Arduino.
Once you have everything hooked up, you can start coding for the display. There are a few ways to do this, one of them is to grab the sample code thatWaveshare provides on their Wiki.
The Waveshare Wiki does provide some information about the display and a bit of sample code for a few common controllers. It’s a reasonable support page, unfortunately, it is the only support that Waveshare provides(I would have liked to see more examples and a tutorial, but I guess I’m spoiled by Adafruit and Sparkfun LOL).
Open the Arduino folder. Inside you’ll find quite a few folders, one for each display size that Waveshare supports. As I’m using the 1.28-inch model, I selected theLCD_1inch28folder.
Once you do that, you can open your Arduino IDE and then navigate to that folder. Inside the folder, there is a sketch file namedLCD_1inch28.inowhich you will want to open.
When you open the sketch, you’ll be greeted by an error message in your Arduino IDE. The error is that two of the files included in the sketch contain unrecognized characters. The IDE offers the suggestion of fixing these with the “Fix Encoder & Reload” function (in the Tools menu), but that won’t work.
You can see from the code that after loading some libraries we initialize the display, set its backlight level (you can use PWM on the BL pin to set the level), and paint a new image. We then proceed to draw lines and strings onto the display.
After uploading the code, you will see the display show a fake “clock”. It’s a static display, but it does illustrate how you can use this with the Waveshare code.
This library is an extension of the Adafruit GFX library, which itself is one of the most popular display libraries around. Because of this, there isextensive documentation for this libraryavailable from Adafruit. This makes the library an excellent choice for those who want to write their own applications.
As with the Waveshare sample, this file just prints shapes and text to the display. It is quite an easy sketch to understand, especially with the Adafruit documentation.
The sketch finishes by printing some bizarre text on the display. The text is an excerpt from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and it’s a sample of Vogon poetry, which is considered to be the third-worst in the Galaxy!
Here is the hookup for the ESP32 and the GC9A01 display. As with most ESP32 hookup diagrams, it is important to use the correct GPIO numbers instead of physical pins. The diagram shows the WROVER, so if you are using a different module you’ll need to consult its documentation to ensure that you hook it up properly.
The TFT_eSPI library is ideal for this, and several other, displays. You can install it through your Arduino IDE Library Manager, just search for “TFT_eSPI”.
There is a lot of demo code included with the library. Some of it is intended for other display sizes, but there are a few that you can use with your circular display.
To test out the display, you can use theColour_Test sketch, found inside the Test and Diagnostic menu item inside the library samples. While this sketch was not made for this display, it is a good way to confirm that you have everything hooked up and configured properly.
A great demo code sample is theAnimated_dialsketch, which is found inside theSpritesmenu item. This demonstration code will produce a “dial” indicator on the display, along with some simulated “data” (really just a random number generator).
One of my favorite sketches is the Animated Eyes sketch, which displays a pair of very convincing eyeballs that move. Although it will work on a single display, it is more effective if you use two.
The first thing we need to do is to hook up a second display. To do this, you connect every wire in parallel with the first display, except for the CS (chip select) line.
The Animated Eyes sketch can be found within the sample files for the TFT_eSPI library, under the “generic” folder. Assuming that you have wired up the second GC9A01 display, you’ll want to use theAnimated_Eyes_2sketch.
The GC9A01 LCD module is a 1.28-inch round display that is useful for instrumentation and other similar projects. Today we will learn how to use this display with an Arduino Uno and an ESP32.

SPI0 is permanently reserved for cache access to the flash chip. SPI1 is connected to the same pins via an arbiter and is used to write to flash. You can use SPI1 to also write to other peripherals connected in parallel with the flash (but with another /CS), however, this is tricky to implement because it means you can"t simultaneously access flash anymore. Thats why it"s not in the driver yet.
Have you ever come across the concept of a standing wave? The current flow is not through the high impedance input, it bounces off the high impedance input back along the line. Then it hits the impedance discontinuity at the Arduino and bounces back. If there is nothing to absorb the energy then this bouncing backwards and forwards sets up a standing wave that can interfere with any future signal. It is all standard transmission line theory. How much of that do you know?
The resistor isn’t needed to protect the Arduino from standing waves or we would see them used quite often on outputs plus the Arduino output is capable of handling currents up to 40ma and any reflected wave would be so small it would be almost impossible to measure. The real reason for the resistor is that many have had the first LED in a string fail which can easily happen when the LED string and Arduino are powered from seperate power supplies and either the Arduino supply is turned on first or it powers up a bit quicker than the LED power supply. When this happens and the Arduino output (which can supply up to 40ma safely and even much more current into a low impedance load) is HIGH, 5V will flow into the input of the first LED and end up trying to power the LED string which will result in more current flow than the input can withstand and distroy the input. Yes, the input is normally a high impedance input, but only when the LED is powered. Without a schematic of the LED circuit is hard to say exactely how 5V on the input reaches the 5V input and tries to power the LED, but it’s common practice to use diodes on high impedance inputs to protect the input and I’m guessing there’s a diode from the input to the 5V rail. These diodes are usually rated for no more than 10ma so would quickly be distroyed by 5v from an Arduino which would then result in the input circuitry also being distroyed. Anyway, A 470 ohm resistor will limit the current to no more than 10ma and allow the input protection diodes to do their job and not affect the signal when the LED is powered and the input becomes a much higher impedance.

Well, my first step was getting familiar with Arduino and WS2812 LED strips, just playing with it to understand how it all works. For Ambilight/Boblight you’ll be able to find plenty links (Google). As far as I understand: the Arduino will be hooked to an XBMC box, and a XBMC plugin will steer it.
After playing with Arduino and the LED strips, the next step would be planning how to mount it on your TV. I have seen people using double sided tape but that’s not for me – I hate finding glue residue on my TV in case I remove it. Making a bracket would be the way
