When buying a lightweight laptop, you often have to choose between functionality and portability, sacrificing amenities to save space. At 12.03 x 8.21 x 0.8 inches, Lenovo"s 12-inch ultraportable isn"t the thinnest laptop on the market, but its girth allows it to provide strong battery life and all the ports you need, a worthwhile trade-off. During my testing, the X250 slipped into my bag easily and felt very comfortable in my hand as I carried it around the office.

Lenovo"s published starting weight for the X250 is 2.88 pounds, but the touch screen added some additional ounces to our test configuration, which clocked in at 3.2 pounds with the default battery and 3.66 pounds with the extended unit. The EliteBook Folio 1020 (2.68 pounds) and MacBook (2.03 pounds) are quite a bit lighter, but the Latitude E7250 (3.4 pounds) is a little heavier.

Large businesses will appreciate the notebook"s security features. Lenovo"s 12-inch ultraportable comes standard with a fingerprint reader for biometric logins. Two of its storage options, a 180GB SSD and a 256GB SSD, are Opal 2.0 compatible, which means that they can hardware encrypt themselves.

According to our colorimeter, the X250"s screen can display only 64.3 percent of the colors in the sRGB gamut, well below the ultraportable notebook category average (78.7 percent), the Apple MacBook 12-inch (102 percent) and the HP EliteBook Folio 1020 (95 percent). When I watched a trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the red in Iron Man"s armor and the blue in Ultron"s eyes seemed flat and lifeless. Lenovo"s own ThinkPad T450s covers 100.8 percent of the sRGB gamut on its touch screen.The ThinkPad X250 has some of the best endurance on the market, provided you opt for the extended, six-cell battery.

Lenovo"s ultraportable scored a solid 50,906 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic benchmark that measures graphics performance. That"s comfortably higher than both the category average (50,906) and the Folio 1020 (33,802).We recommend that you configure the X250 with the non-touch 1,920 x 1,080 display, a $130 option.

The ThinkPad X250 has some of the best endurance on the market, provided you opt for the extended six-cell battery. With the larger battery on board, Lenovo"s ultraportable lasted for 15 hours and 12 minutes on the Laptop Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits of brightness. That"s nearly double the category average (8:04) and well ahead of the MacBook (8:43), the Latitude E7250 (9:18), the Elitebook Folio 1020 (6:49) and Lenovo"s own X1 Carbon (8:00).

Since touch screens use significantly more power than regular displays, a nontouch version of the X250 will undoubtedly last longer with either battery. No matter which battery you choose, the X250 lets you swap it out without even turning the computer off, thanks to a second, three-cell battery that runs down after the external unit. Lenovo calls this technology Power Bridge, and it"s also available on the 14-inch ThinkPad T450s.

The noble ThinkPad has been a business staple for many years, both before and after its acquisition by Lenovo. It currently comes in many sizes and shapes, all boasting enterprise-friendly features. And while the company has been primarily touting its gorgeous, ultra-slim X1 Carbon UltraBook, that’s not the only Lenovo Ultrabook worthy of a home in your laptop case.

We took a look at two of the less expensive, more neglected models to see how they serve business users: the ThinkPad Yoga 260, and the ThinkPad X260, and were pleased with what we saw. They may not have the huge screen, skinny profile, and executive cachet of the X1 Carbon, but they are solid performers built with productivity and mobility in mind. And although the names are similar, the two devices are quite different.

The X260, on the other hand, is unabashedly and exclusively a laptop. Our configuration included a Core i5 6300 processor (you can get anything from an i3 to an i7 CPU), 8 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. It also had an upgraded FHD 1920 x 1080 display, but it’s non-touch.

The X260 is the smaller of the two, at 12.03″ x 8.21″ x 0.8″, but only by a bit. The Yoga measures 12.20″ x 8.66″ x 0.70″. Starting weight for each machine is 2.9 lb. The base price for the Yoga is $1259 (touchscreens aren’t cheap), and the X260 starts at $1061 (both prices in Canadian dollars, from the Lenovo website). Both come with the choice of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, or Windows 7 Pro (through downgrade rights).

However, there are downsides as well. The video drivers for the touchscreen generate odd artifacts in some programs, something I’ve never seen on the X260. Port-wise, you get two USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, OneLink+ (docking), microphone/headset jack and microSD ports – which is a lot more than many other machines, but still missing a couple of critical connectors. And, alas, the battery life isn’t what it should be; in my testing, the Yoga managed between six and seven hours of life per charge.

The X260, on the other hand, is the road warrior’s dream. It has not one but two batteries, one of which is hot-swappable. There are three options for the removable battery: 3 cell 23.2 watt-hour, 6-cell 47 WH, and 6-cell 72 WH. The bonus with a 6-cell battery is that it props the machine up at an ideal typing angle. With the highest capacity secondary battery installed, Lenovo claims up to 21 hours of battery life; with our system we managed a still-respectable 14.5 hours with normal settings (the best battery life is accomplished by throttling everything from screen brightness to wireless).

The X260 also boasts a ton of ports – 3 x USB 3.0, RJ45, mini DisplayPort, HDMI, 4-in-1 card reader, 3.5 mm microphone /headphone, docking port, and an optional smart card reader. That adds up to no dongles required, so there’s nothing to break, lose, or forget.

The keyboards on both systems are similar, although the Yoga has a slightly firmer touch, and a backlit keyboard comes standard (it’s a $40 option on the X260). The Yoga also has a slightly bigger trackpad (and, of course, both machines come with the iconic red ThinkPad TrackPoint trackstick). Unfortunately, the trackpad “buttons” are simply pressable areas at the bottom of the trackpad, and they’re finicky on both machines, especially when you’re trying to right-click. The trackstick has proper buttons, located above the touchpad. Annoyingly, the Yoga’s keys leave smudges on the screen when the lid is closed, necessitating regular polishing; the X260 did not suffer from this problem.

Performance-wise, the machines both do as expected, handling business applications without breaking a sweat. I find the i5 processor, coupled with 8 GB RAM (you can get up to 16 GB in either system) is the sweet spot for price/performance, and the 256 GB SSD is a good compromise between capacity and cost – the biggest SSD drive available on the X260, 512 GB, adds a whopping $750 to the base price, and a 1 TB SSD on the Yoga adds almost $1000 over the base drive.

As with any computer decision, the choice between these models comes down to what you want to do with the machine. If you want the flexibility of a laptop and tablet in a single device, pick the ThinkPad Yoga 260. But if you want killer battery life, lots of ports, and don’t care about touch, the X260 will make you smile.
