Brands like HP and Dell have inexpensive screen replacements compared to Mac. Why so? It is because MacBook’s retina display is unique. That is why the replacement is expensive. Many prices seem (relatively) generous! Others, not so much. You can’t just replace your own battery or keyboard on a MacBook Pro, for example! You have to buy the entire top lid that comes with that and other parts preattached, and it’ll cost you more than twice the $199 that Apple charges for a battery replacement.

And while you can replace just the battery on your 2020 M1 MacBook Air, you’ll have to spend $39 — the same price as a full set of keycaps — to replace broken keys on your function row. That might be because Apple ships seven sets of Fn keycaps at a time:

The motherboard prices are particularly interesting. Not only will Apple not let you upgrade to a higher-end board, the company is dramatically incentivizing you to return the original part. It expects you to lay out as much as $4,222 for a new logic board — ouch at having that on my credit card — but you’ll get the vast majority of it back upon return. The most common Apple repairs are for Mac laptops and desktops. For laptops, most repair shops are asked to replace logic boards, hard drives and screens. The logic board is the foundation of the computer. Full Display Replacement. The cost to replace the entire display assembly on a 2020 MacBook Pro model A2338 with a genuine Apple display assembly is $549.

Although there are multiple parts in a display assembly, you may not need to replace all of them to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

When the computer is open, the image is displayed on the LCD panel which is the part of the screen you can touch. The LCD panel is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Pro screen. If you have a cracked screen, you will most likely need an LCD replacement.

It is very difficult (or sometimes not possible) to source the LCD panel for certain models of the MacBook Pro. When there is no LCD panel supply, a full display replacement is all that will be available.

You will likely need to replace the entire display assembly if there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display, or if the display was damaged by liquid. The full display assembly includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Pro”, and the hinges.

The clutch cover is the part of the MacBook that runs along the bottom of the screen and says “MacBook Pro” on it. Sometimes, I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken, but the LCD panel itself is working fine. This means that if the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Pro”, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Pro camera is not known for having issues. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is most likely with the cables that connect to the camera, or the logic board inside your computer. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Pros are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

On older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era, the hinges connecting the display to the computer sometimes cracked or broke, causing the display to not stay up properly. This was much rarer on the newer MacBook Pros, but it can happen. Some models required an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others allowed the hinges to be replaced separately. Because Apple has started routing cables through the hinges, usually the entire display assembly had to be replaced if there are issues with the hinges.

Some things to consider when looking for a shop to complete a screen repair on a MacBook Pro include the number of years the shop has been in business, the quality of its work, and the price they charge for the service. With so many repair shops to choose from, doing your research can help you find the best possible option for your needs.

What is the shop’s policy on data privacy? Make sure you’re comfortable with how your personal information will be treated before you give them your business. Some repairs require the technician to log in to your computer during the repair process, while other repairs do not.

Choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about after researching your options. A little effort upfront can save you a lot of hassle later on when you need your MacBook screen repaired.

If you have a MacBook Pro that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $575 and $900 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a display repair for a 13″ MacBook Pro is usually about $480 + a $100 labor charge. If you were to take your MacBook Pro to a different repair shop, the price could be significantly lower or higher depending on the shop you go to.

Tier 3 Accidental Damage covers the display as well as other components that are damaged, as long as the logic board is still working properly. This tier is usually $825-1000 +labor at the Apple Store.

When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

I don’t recommend that beginners or intermediate-level technicians attempt to replace the LCD on a MacBook Pro. It’s best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to repairs like this. LCDs are delicate, and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair, like scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro screen replacement guide. The self-repair program is a great way to save money on the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro.

I will say that I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Pro themselves. Normally, the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly.

If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. The price for panels usually ranges from around $250 to about $550 for the newest model. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

You can repair a MacBook Air Screen yourself with the right tools, but it’s a moderately difficult repair. Unless you have some experience in repairing electronics, I don’t recommend trying to do it yourself.

Apple will replace the MacBook screen for free if there are no cracks or physical damage present, but the laptop must be under warranty or AppleCare+. Sometimes screens will stop working on their own, and these types of problems will be covered under your warranty.

Apple charges between $575 and $900 to replace most MacBook Pro screens if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Pro screen if the MacBook Pro is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Pros will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Pros.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

Your product is eligible for a battery replacement at no additional cost if you have AppleCare+ and your product"s battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity.

Apple-branded accessories purchased separately are covered by the Apple Limited Warranty for Accessories. This includes adapters, spare cables, or cases.

Replacement equipment that Apple provides as part of the repair or replacement service may contain new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements.

Added to this, the fact that Apple stops supporting software updates for various products after a number of years, and the availability of parts for servicing becomes more scarce the older the product gets, means that the lifespan of Apple products isn’t as long as it could be. Apple is by no means the only electronics company guilty of making hard to fix products that end up being thrown away before their time, but it can certainly do its part by improving the repairability of its products, and making repairs easier and cheaper.

Whether you are an environmentally conscious person looking for a new product that will have a good few years ahead of it before it becomes landfill, or someone who doesn’t want to be landed with an expensive or difficult to repair device, we have details of just how repairable Apple’s products are. Apple sends genuine Apple parts to authorised service providers, and, since August 2019 for iPhone and August 2020 for Mac, independent repair businesses can also get access to genuine parts. But as a consumer you won’t be able to get hold of these parts. In the past iPhones have shown error messages if non-Apple parts are used, so this isn’t an issue you can ignore.

For the average person we’d recommend making an appointment at an Apple Store or seeking an Apple Authorised Service Provider to carry out the repair for you. We’ll discuss who to do that next.

The next question is where can you go to get Apple products repaired. The obvious answer is Apple, but that’s not your only choice. We’ll run through your options below:

The latter option might be best if you don’t have an Apple Store nearby and don’t want to be without your Mac, iPhone or other Apple product while it’s being fixed.

Before you begin we recommend that you check to see if the product qualifies for a free repair. We have a separate articles about the various repair schemes and recalls.

If your Mac, iPhone or iPad is included in one of these recalls or repair programs you may be able to get it repaired for free. Its a good idea to check before you arrange a repair, not just to furnish yourself with the knowledge of what should be on offer to you, but also because if you don’t go to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised repair shop then you won’t be able to take advantage of the free repair.

The next screen will ask you to Bring in for Repair. You will be able to search for your closest Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (which in our case is an iStore).

You can arrange shipping your device to an Apple Repair Centre either over the phone or online. Apple says this service is available for most Apple products. It seems that most Macs are exempt (at least in the UK), but Apple Watches, iPhones, and iPads can be posted in, for example.

If you have AppleCare+ you can take advantage of the Express Replacement Service that is available for some Apple products. In this case Apple will send you a replacement product before your damaged or non-working product is returned to them (you have ten days or you will pay the full price of the replacement). There may be an additional fee and you only get to use this feature of AppleCare+ for the first two instances of accidental damage. Read:

If you are able to take your Apple product to an Apple Store or an Apple Service Provider they might be able to fix it there for you, depending on whether they have the equipment.

The cost of Apple repairs depends on a number of factors. Generally battery and screen replacements are cheaper than other replacements. And if you have AppleCare+ you may be able to get your Apple product fixed for nothing or just a small fee – and a replacement product almost immediately.

Unfortunately Apple doesn’t offer the same kind of service for replacing iPad screens as it does for replacing iPhone screens. If your iPad screen is accidentally broken, you have the option of replacing your iPad for an out-of-warranty fee. AppleCare+ does include accidental damage protection, but there may be an excess fee.

As with the iPad, if your Apple Watch screen gets damaged, you have the option to service your Apple Watch for a fee. AppleCare+ gives you accidental damage protection where you may be subject to an excess fee.

If your Mac is still in warranty, or you have AppleCare+ your repair will be free. The price of a repair will vary depending on the nature of the problem.

The price of a screen repair depends on whether you have AppleCare+ cover. If you purchase AppleCare+ for Mac then for three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date you will have cover for two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee which is £79/$99 for screen damage and £229/$299 for other damage. If your product is within warranty – which is one year from the point of sale (even if you were purchasing a refurbished Apple product) – and goes wrong you can get Apple to fix it for free.

Other reasons that might help you get a free repair is if your product has been recalled or qualifies in a repair program. As we mentioned earlier, we have a separate articles about the various repair schemes and recalls. Read:

Apple has improved the repairability of the iPhone in terms of the screen and battery, but what of its other products? Replacing a screen on an iPad is not as simple as on an iPhone, for example, and the price is a lot higher.

Right to Repair movement and is aiming to put in place laws that will make it compulsory for new devices to be easier to repair due. Hopefully leading manufacturers to build products with removable and replaceable parts.

As a result of this campaign, French legislation has already forced Apple to label products to show a repairability score. The result of the changes should lead to more reparable products with extended lifespans so that they are less likely to end up in landfill early.

The repairbility of a product should be part of the decision when choosing a new product to buy, and thanks to the French legislation Apple is now being forced to reveal this information.

Apple isn’t the only one revealing how easy (or hard) it is to repair Apple products. iFixit is famous for offering guides to the repairability of various Apple products where they highlight the issues that might lead you to needing a repair in the first place – for example, the smashable glass on the front and back of the iPhone. Luckily the glass front of the iPhone is pretty simple and relatively inexpensive to repair, but replacing the glass back could be an expensive job.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there comes a time in every Apple products life when it becomes Obsolete or Vintage. These are terms that Apple uses to describe products once they haven’t been sold for more than five or eight years. Once a product is vintage Apple will only repair it if it has the parts (and then at a price, obviouly). Once a product is Obsolete then there is no possibility that Apple will repair it.

Wondering what is the easiest iPhone to repair? Unfortunately the iPhone isn’t getting any easier to repair, although the two things most likely to need repair – the screen and the battery – are easy enough to access (although even those aren’t repairs you could perform at home).

iFixit gives the iPhone 12 series a score of 6/10 for repairability. In favour of the 2020 range of iPhones is the easy access for screen and battery replacement and the fact that most components are modular. The main criticism is the glass back – the problem being that if the back glass breaks, it is necessary to remove every component and replace the entire chassis. iFixit reports that the replacement of the screen and camera of the iPhone 12 series must be activated via the System Configuration app – which again counts our home-fixers.

The iPhone XR gets the same score of 6/10 from iFixit, with the the ease of replacing the screen and battery highlighted, and the same problem with replacing the glass back highlighted.

The iPhone 7 – introduced back in 2016 – marked the last time an iPhone got a score of 7/10 from iFixit. Here the improvements offered by the solid state home button was noted as a point in favour, because the old mechanical button was a common point of failure in older models. Apple gives the iPhone 7 6.6/10 while the 7 Plus gets 6.7/10.

Looking for a new Mac and wondering what is the easiest Mac to repair? The problem with many Mac laptops is the fact that Apple uses a lot of glue and solder to stick components down. By soldering or gluing components into place Apple makes access to faulty components impossible. Aside from meaning you might not have been able to get a broken MacBook Air repaired, this isn’t great news for the environment as Macs that can’t be fixed generally end up in landfill.

iFixit hasn’t yet given the M1 Macs a rating. Apple however has: the M1 MacBook Air gets 6.5/10, which is the same score as it awards the 2018 MacBook Air.

The 2018 MacBook Air gets 3/10 from iFixit. Here the criticism is the keyboard being integrated into the top case, making replacement difficult and expensive (a particular issue given the keyboard problems of the 2016-2020 MacBook Airs). These laptops are also held back by the fact that storage and RAM is soldered on. In the Air’s favour, iFixit does note that the ports, fan, speaker and some other components are straightforward to access.

To get an idea of how that might translate to iFixit’s scores, the 2019 13in MacBook Pro (the entry-level model, but the repairability most likely applies to all models) was given a score of 2/10 by iFixit. The negatives they note include Apple’s use of Proprietary pentalobe screws, the glued in battery, and the soldered-down RAM.

The 2/10 score is a slight improvement on the 2018 model at least: here iFixit criticises the fact that the processor, RAM, and flash memory are soldered to the logic board and the keyboard, battery, and speakers are glued together. The Touch ID button is also highlighted due to it being paired with the T2 chip. Apple awards the 2019 13in MacBook Pro a score of 5.6/10, while the 2018 model scored 6.2/10.

According to iFixit the 16in MacBook Pro is not one to recommend. They give it just 1/10 for repairability, noting that the processor, RAM, and flash memory are all soldered to the logic board, making replacement difficult. They also note that glue and/or rivets secure the keyboard, battery, speakers, and Touch Bar, so those repairs would also be difficult. Also the Touch ID sensor is the power switch and locked to the logic board and paired with the T2 chip, which would make repairs of that component difficult.

The older 15in MacBook Pro was no better, also scoring 1/10, for essentially the same reasons as the 16in model. Apple awards the 16in MacBook Pro 6.3/10.

As for desktops, the 2020 27in iMac gets 4/10 from iFixit. Here the criticism is the fact that Apple makes it so hard to remove the screen to access the components – and it;’s difficult to return it to the state you started. Once you are inside, the exposed power supply is a concern. And altering the internal storage is impossible. Apple hasn’t rated these models yet.

The iMac Pro gets 3/10. Here the criticisms are that key components are buried behind the logic board, requiring a lot of disassembly for access, the loss of the external RAM access hatch – a feature of other 27in iMac models – means RAM is a more difficult upgrade, and the GPU is soldered in place. Apple hasn’t rated these models yet.

It’s disappointing really that the iPad isn’t as easy to repair as the iPhone. In fact the difficulty of replacing the screen and the battery are emphasised by the fact that both these repairs are relatively easy on the iPhone. We think it’s time Apple made the iPad easier to fix.

The 2018 iPad Pro does get a slightly better score – 3/10. Here the criticism is again all the glue that Apple uses inside the case. But at least here the battery is secured with easy-to-remove tabs. Another point in its favour is the USB-C port which is modular and can be independently replaced.

Like the iPhone the Apple Watch screen is likely to be the thing that breaks, although, unlike the iPhone we aren’t so likely to drop our Apple Watches. But just how easy is it to fix an Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch Series 6 gets a repairability score of 6/10 from iFixit. The screen and battery are reasonably straightforward to replace. The main complaint is that many of the component cables are mounted directly to the S6 and require skilled microsoldering if they are damaged.

So to wrap up, Apple products aren’t easy or cheap to fix. Apple has made it easier to replace the screen and battery in the iPhone, which is a bonus, but given that they are the things most likely to go wrong, an essential bonus. We hope that the new EU legislation coming in will mean that Apple and other companies are more focused on the repairability of their products, extending their lifespans.

When you need to replace the MacBook screen, you may need to make a decision between using an Apple original screen or a cheaper third-party screen. A MacBook screen consists of two major components, an LCD panel and a strip of LED lights called backlights. The LCD panel creates the image. The LED lights illuminate the image from behind the LCD panel. There are significant differences between an original Apple screen and a third-party screen as outlined here:

1. Backlight purity. Apple uses high-quality LEDs as backlight sources. The backlight is pure white. On the other hand, the backlight of the third-party screen is bluish. The bluish backlight degrades the vivid picture dramatically.

2. Backlight brightness. Even after eight years, Apple’s high-quality LEDs provide brighter lights and remain near the same brightness level. Low-quality LEDs not only produce bluish light but also have brightness degradation problems. The brightness of some third-party screens may only maintain half of the original brightness level after a year of use.

3. Photo sharpness. The Apple original screen produces a much sharper image thanks to the high quality of the LCD panel, as you can see on the right-hand side of the above photo.

The full cost of repairs depend on the type and level of damage. For instance, replacing the screen under warranty costs less than other types of damage.

For a MacBook Air, coverage costs your $249. This doesn’t include anything except the coverage. For a 13” MacBook Pro, the cost is $269. If your screen or external closure is damaged, you’ll have to pay a $99 service fee. Any other damage costs you $299.

Your out-of-pocket costs to repair a broken screen for a MacBook Air under AppleCare+ would be a total of $348. Just remember, you’re only covered for two incidents during a three-year period. Anything other incidents mean you’ll pay the full cost of repairs.

Connecting your Apple laptop, be it a MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, to your TV can be as simple as connecting one end of a cable to your MacBook and the other end to your TV. Some laptops have at least two of them built-in (usually a USB port in combination with either a micro DVI port, Mini DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt port), some, like the MacBook version, only have one (although you can use specific adapters to accommodate other types of video connectors). Much older models, however, typically have more built-in ports which can include VGA and HDMI ports.

HDMI ports – The HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface port is probably the most common type of port on electronic devices. These ports have been around since early 2000 because of their ability to transfer large amounts of data (allowing for higher resolution videos). If your MacBook has a built-in HDMI port, it is the easiest way to connect your MacBook to a TV.

After you’ve confirmed that your computer and TV have compatible ports or that you have the necessary adapters to connect them, you can proceed with connecting your laptop to a TV.

After you’ve connected your laptop to your TV, your Mac will treat your TV as an external display. You will then need to tell your laptop how you want it to use your TV: as a second display that shows an entirely different screen from what is being shown on your computer or as a mirrored display that shows the same content that is currently being shown on your laptop.

The latest Apple MacBook models come with a USB-C port and not much else; however, you can still connect your computer to a TV with an HDMI port by using a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

There are some adapters that do not work with HDMI audio, so you might not hear any sound from your TV after you connected it to your Mac. If you encountered this problem, you can work around it by following these troubleshooting tips.

The M1 MacBook Air has a comfortable keyboard, good performance, and a reasonable amount of storage—things that haven’t always been true of previous MacBook Airs.

The best Mac laptop for most people is the 13-inch MacBook Air with Apple’s M1 processor. It’s more than fast enough for browsing, working on documents, and making light photo and video edits, and it has an excellent high-resolution screen, a great trackpad, a totally silent fanless design, and a reasonable price. Its battery life is excellent, long enough to survive through a full day of work or classes and then some. While there’s a newer version of the MacBook Air with Apple’s M2 processor, it doesn’t offer a major difference in any day-to-day tasks, so we think you can save $200 with the older (but still fantastic) version.

The Air’s light weight, solid construction, and industry-leading support make it a great laptop, especially if you also own an iPhone or other Apple devices. The biggest downside is its mediocre webcam—if that’s a priority, we recommend upgrading to the newer M2 MacBook Air, which has a higher-quality webcam and other upgrades for $200 more.

The MacBook Air has a bright and colorful 13-inch 2560×1600 IPS screen—this display has a higher resolution than the 1080p screens in most of the PC laptops we recommend, and text and images look sharp and detailed. The Air’s display supports both the sRGB color gamut and the wider DCI-P3 color gamut, which can display more shades of certain colors, though this feature isn’t hugely important unless you’re doing high-end film or photography work. The Air’s screen also supports the True Tone feature, which subtly changes the screen’s color temperature to match the ambient lighting in the room.

The Air has a headphone jack on its right side plus two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports on its left side for connectivity and charging, so you need adapters or new cables to connect your other devices. Each port supports charging, 40-gigabits-per-second data transfers, external displays (up to 6016×3384 resolution, or 6K, though you can only connect one external monitor at a time), and basic USB peripherals like flash drives, printers, and mice. More expensive versions ($1,800 and up) of the 13-inch MacBook Pro include four Thunderbolt 3 ports, as does the 16-inch Pro, but even with those models you’d still need a dongle, hub, or dock to connect most accessories.

The Air uses Apple’s Magic Keyboard with a scissor-switch design, which it introduced to replace the stiff, shallow, breakage prone butterfly-switch keyboard that came with most MacBook Airs and Pros released between 2016 and 2019. The Magic Keyboard still isn’t as springy as the pre-2016 MacBook keyboards (or Lenovo’s excellent ThinkPad keyboards), but it’s a huge improvement. If you have a 2015 or older MacBook Air or Pro, and you’ve been waiting to upgrade because you didn’t like the keyboard of 2016 and newer models, this keyboard is good enough for you to stop putting off the purchase. The MacBook Air skips the Touch Bar in favor of a row of physical function keys and a standalone Touch ID fingerprint sensor, but most people don’t need the Touch Bar, so we don’t really consider that to be a negative.

All of our picks include the same Force Touch trackpad, which remains the best trackpad we’ve used on a laptop because of its large size and its accuracy. It has no hinge, so it will recognize presses anywhere on the surface, but it also offers haptic feedback that makes it feel and sound as if it were “clicking” even though it doesn’t move. The Air’s trackpad isn’t quite as large as the Pro’s, but the difference isn’t noticeable if you’re not comparing the two side by side.

The 2020 MacBook Air weighs 2.8 pounds, 0.3 pound lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Pro and about the same extra heft as Dell’s XPS 13 (9310). The Air is not an exceptionally thin or light laptop, but it is as slim as it needs to be, and it is comfortable to carry in a backpack or shoulder bag.

The M1 MacBook Air has great battery life and lasted longer than 14 hours in our test that simulates browsing the web and watching videos on YouTube. We also found that the M1 MacBook Air’s battery didn’t drain as quickly when using video-chatting apps like Zoom, which are typically pretty hard on a laptop’s battery.

This version of the MacBook Air includes a basic 720p webcam, which is a lower resolution compared with many competitors. This is fine for casual video chatting if, say, the person on the other end of the call merely needs to see your face, and the M1’s image processing does help with exposure and white balance. But the webcam in the $1,000 MacBook Air (or even a $2,400 16-inch MacBook Pro) is still noticeably inferior to the front-facing camera Apple includes with the $400 iPhone SE, or any of our less-than-$100 standalone webcam picks.

The M1 MacBook Air uses Thunderbolt 3 for all connectivity, including power. (The only other port is a 3.5 mm headphone/mic jack.) This means that if you own any hard drives, scanners, printers, thumb drives, or card readers that use USB Type-A ports, you need a hub or adapter; similarly, if you want to use an external display or projector, you need the right video adapter.

It also can’t connect to more than one external display. That external screen can have a resolution as high as 6K, which covers Apple’s astronomically expensive Pro Display XDR, but even if you just want to connect a basic 1080p budget monitor to your MacBook, the laptop can only handle one of them.

The MacBook Pro 2021 (16-inch) is a much-improved version of its predecessor that, when kitted out with the latest in Apple silicon, sets a new high-water mark for MacBook performance. Its beautiful new Liquid Retina XDR display makes just about everything you do on it look good, and the 1080p webcam up top helps you look your best on video calls with friends and colleagues. Try not to worry about the notch — if you"re anything like me, you"ll stop noticing it after a few minutes.

When you factor in its comfy keyboard, great speakers, and 15+ hours of battery life on a single charge, the MacBook Pro 2021 (16-inch) is already a strong contender for one of the best MacBooks on the market and one of the best laptops, period.

Of course, you’ll pay for the privilege, as configuring the 16-inch Pro 2021 for maximum power carries a pretty hefty price tag. Even then, this beastly new piece of Apple hardware falls short in a few key ways that are worth knowing about before you buy.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021 is available for purchase from Apple"s website(opens in new tab) at a starting price of $2,499, about $100 more than the starting price of the Intel-based 16-inch Pro it replaces. As usual, you can order it in one of two color options: Silver or Space Gray.

The $2,499 entry-level model ships with an M1 Pro chip packing a 10-core CPU, a 16-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD for storage, though you can pay extra to boost the memory to 32GB or expand the storage up to 8TB.

If you need more power you can upgrade to a model packing Apple"s new M1 Max chip — the most powerful piece of Apple silicon yet, with a 10-core CPU and up to a 32-core GPU. For a starting price of $3,099, you can buy a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Max (24-core GPU), 32GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD for storage. Or you can pay to upgrade the M1 Max to a 32-core GPU, double the memory to 64GB, or get up to an 8TB SSD. If you all-out and get all of the above, it’ll cost you: expect to pay up to $6,099 for a fully kitted-out 16-inch Pro with an M1 Max.

While you can order a MacBook Pro 2021 (16-inch) right now, there are some severe delays on shipping. Be prepared for up to a two-month wait once you place your order.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021 has been redesigned in subtle but significant ways. It measures 14.01 x 9.77 x 0.66 inches and weighs 4.7 pounds (4.8 if you splurge for an M1 Max model), meaning it’s roughly the same size and just a smidge thicker than the Intel-based 16-inch Pro it replaces.

The 100% recycled aluminum chassis has a flatter lid than its predecessor, with vents carved out of either side in service of an improved cooling solution and a redesigned 6-speaker sound system inside.

The notch is one of the most controversial design decisions Apple’s made with this new Pro, and after spending some time using one as my daily driver I can tell you the notch has grown on me. Perhaps it’s just that using an iPhone has inured me to the toothy look of a notched screen, but I like how the MacBook Pro’s display pulls back on either edge of the notch.

In my experience, macOS does a pretty smart job of tucking the Menu Bar into the thin ribbon of extra screen space on either side of the notch, so it ends up feeling more like I’m getting some extra screen space where the top bezel should be instead of like the bezel is jutting down into my display. Even if you don"t agree, in my experience you stop noticing the notch a few minutes after you start staring into the gorgeous Liquid Retina XDR display.

Below the display you’ll no longer find a MacBook Pro logo printed in the bottom bezel, presumably because there"s no longer space for it. Apple instead etched it into the bottom of the laptop, which I think is a much better place for it.
