MacBook laptops from Apple are some of the most beautiful and well designed – not to mention powerful, but just like everything else man-made they aren’t impervious to accidental drops, dings, and damage.

Thanks to the fact that they are made using high-quality construction materials (especially milled aluminum) they feel indestructible in the hand, but those gorgeous retina displays have the potential to pop and spiderweb just like any other screen out there.

Unlike most laptop computer repairs, the retina display on the MacBook is very unique, and as a result much more expensive to service. Lenovo, HP, Dell and all major OEM for PCs will utilize the same display across hundreds of models, and even that display is used across multiple years of laptops.

If you are unlucky enough to have a damaged screen, chances are pretty good you started to look into how much does it cost to replace a MacBook screen at the Apple Store – and the odds are pretty good you had a tough time hammering down concrete figures without bringing your computer into a store and having someone from the Genius Bar have a look. In this quick guide we hope to show you about how much you can expect to have to spend on MacBook repair going forward, the total “all in” cost for getting your screen replaced, and your computer back up and running.

The MacBook Pro was first released in 2006, replacing the very popular PowerBook lineup. I remember being a little upset with Apple for making the switch to the intel processors, until I used one! After 16 years of the MacBook Pro, there are quite a few models that might need to get their screens replaced. The cost of the repair will depend on the year and model of the MacBook Pro, as well as the problem it is having with its screen. Below I will cover the most common models I see for repair and the cost of repairing each model. How much does it cost to replace a 13″ MacBook Pro screen? The cost to replace a 13″ MacBook Pro screen is $329-$549 for most modern models. The A1706, A1708, and A1989 models are $329 for the screen repair. The A2159, A2251, and A2289 models are also $329. The A2338 model is $429 for the LCD or $549 for the entire display.

How much does it cost to replace a 15″ MacBook Pro screen? The cost to replace a 15″ MacBook Pro screen is $429-$799 for most modern models. The A1707 model is $429 for the screen repair. The A1990 model is $499. The A2485 model requires a full display replacement and is $799 for the entire display.

How much does it cost to replace a 16″ MacBook Pro screen? The cost to replace a 16″ MacBook Pro screen model A2485 is $799 for the full display replacement.

Below I cover the most common MacBook Pro models with examples of damage that will need screen repair. You can view the pricing for all my MacBook Pro Screen Repair Services.

Full Display Replacement. The cost to replace the entire display assembly on a 2020 MacBook Pro model A2338 with a genuine Apple display assembly is $549.

I am able to order the screen directly from Apple utilizing their self-repair program, complete the repair, and contact Apple to have them complete the configuration in order to have a fully Apple Genuine display replacement.

The 2019 13” MacBook Pro is model number A1989. This is one of the models that I am able to source just the LCD panel for the screen repair. By replacing just the cracked LCD I am able to save you money on the repair. The cost to repair the screen of a 13″ 2019 MacBook Pro is $329.

Although there are multiple parts in a display assembly, you may not need to replace all of them to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

When the computer is open, the image is displayed on the LCD panel which is the part of the screen you can touch. The LCD panel is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Pro screen. If you have a cracked screen, you will most likely need an LCD replacement.

It is very difficult (or sometimes not possible) to source the LCD panel for certain models of the MacBook Pro. When there is no LCD panel supply, a full display replacement is all that will be available.

You will likely need to replace the entire display assembly if there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display, or if the display was damaged by liquid. The full display assembly includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Pro”, and the hinges.

The clutch cover is the part of the MacBook that runs along the bottom of the screen and says “MacBook Pro” on it. Sometimes, I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken, but the LCD panel itself is working fine. This means that if the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Pro”, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Pro camera is not known for having issues. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is most likely with the cables that connect to the camera, or the logic board inside your computer. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Pros are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

On older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era, the hinges connecting the display to the computer sometimes cracked or broke, causing the display to not stay up properly. This was much rarer on the newer MacBook Pros, but it can happen. Some models required an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others allowed the hinges to be replaced separately. Because Apple has started routing cables through the hinges, usually the entire display assembly had to be replaced if there are issues with the hinges.

Some things to consider when looking for a shop to complete a screen repair on a MacBook Pro include the number of years the shop has been in business, the quality of its work, and the price they charge for the service. With so many repair shops to choose from, doing your research can help you find the best possible option for your needs.

What is the shop’s policy on data privacy? Make sure you’re comfortable with how your personal information will be treated before you give them your business. Some repairs require the technician to log in to your computer during the repair process, while other repairs do not.

Choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about after researching your options. A little effort upfront can save you a lot of hassle later on when you need your MacBook screen repaired.

If you have a MacBook Pro that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $575 and $900 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a display repair for a 13″ MacBook Pro is usually about $480 + a $100 labor charge. If you were to take your MacBook Pro to a different repair shop, the price could be significantly lower or higher depending on the shop you go to.

Tier 3 Accidental Damage covers the display as well as other components that are damaged, as long as the logic board is still working properly. This tier is usually $825-1000 +labor at the Apple Store.

When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

I don’t recommend that beginners or intermediate-level technicians attempt to replace the LCD on a MacBook Pro. It’s best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to repairs like this. LCDs are delicate, and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair, like scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro screen replacement guide. The self-repair program is a great way to save money on the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro.

I will say that I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Pro themselves. Normally, the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly.

If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. The price for panels usually ranges from around $250 to about $550 for the newest model. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

The cost to replace a 13″ MacBook Pro screen is $329-$549 for most modern models. The A1706, A1708, and A1989 models are $329 for the screen repair. The A2159, A2251, and A2289 models are $429. The A2338 model is $429 for the LCD or $549 for the entire display.

You can repair a MacBook Air Screen yourself with the right tools, but it’s a moderately difficult repair. Unless you have some experience in repairing electronics, I don’t recommend trying to do it yourself.

Apple will replace the MacBook screen for free if there are no cracks or physical damage present, but the laptop must be under warranty or AppleCare+. Sometimes screens will stop working on their own, and these types of problems will be covered under your warranty.

Apple charges between $575 and $900 to replace most MacBook Pro screens if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Pro screen if the MacBook Pro is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Pros will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Pros.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

Your product is eligible for a battery replacement at no additional cost if you have AppleCare+ and your product"s battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity.

Affected devices were sold between October 2016 and February 2018. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service affected MacBook Pro units, free of charge.

just to recap quickly: one day I turned on my laptop and there was a big nasty crack down the screen running from the top in a jagged line across to the side. the machine was never dropped, hit or abused in any way, so to anyone out there who doubts that this kind of thing can just happen... well, it can.

anyway, after taking the machine to an authorised repair centre, instead of contacting apple for a warranty repair as I"d asked them to do, they just sent me a quote to replace the screen at a cost of around 950€. now, if I"d dropped my computer, or some accident had happened to it, I would have just had to swallow it and accept that this is how things go. but seeing as nothing like that had ever happened, it"s a little harder to come around to thinking you are going to have to shell out for something that obviously was defective and snapped all of its own accord. the repair centre suggested that if I wasn"t happy with the quote I should take it up directly with apple..

so, I called apple france the next day and explained the situation. it was a little tricky because my MBP is now a month or so out of warranty, however it was still under warranty at the date when I handed it over for repair. so fortunately I had documentation to prove that. after a lengthy conversation and being put on hold a couple of times, the consultant told me that they would need to speak with the technician that had assessed the machine. if the technician would verify that there were no signs of abuse on the computer, they"d replace the display under warranty. so they put me on hold again and called the repair centre. when they got back to me, the confirmed that whatever happened to my display was not the result of any damage accidental or otherwise, and they would authorise repair under warranty.

Picture this.You’re at home and drinking coffee while doing some work on your MacBook Pro. All of a sudden your cat jumps up onto your lap. This causes you to drop both your coffee andyour laptop.

The result? You now own a physically damaged MacBook Pro with a broken screen and possibly even liquid damage! This means that your MacBook Pro is now possibly rendered completely useless, and you are without a laptop.

Regardless of the reason for your broken device, most people might assume that repairing their broken screen or water damaged MacBook might be cheaper than purchasing new. Oftentimes this is not the case, and it can actually be more cost-effective to purchase a new device.

If you have a broken MacBook and bring it in to Apple for repairs, you will be charged a ridiculous amount of money to repair an out of warranty MacBook.

Rather than pay for repairs, instead, you can sell your used damaged MacBook. Use the money you would have spent to repair your device, but spend it on a brand new device!

It is good to note that there is not really such a thing as a MacBook “repair”. Instead, it is typically parts replacement. For example, if your chassis is dented on the side, they will not pull out the dent to “repair” it. Rather, your MacBook would need an entire chassis replacement. If your logic board has a liquid spill, Apple will not repair your logic board, but simply replace it.

There is no easy response regarding how much it will cost to repair an Apple MacBook, due to there being so many variations (such as model and year). Typically you can expect the smallest repair/replacement to be as low as $29, all the way up to as expensive as $849+.

This tier encompasses minor boards and assemblies. This can include replacement of the power supply board, inverter assembly, or interconnect board. It might also include enclosure parts or an LCD polarizer.

Damaging your MacBook screen can feel devastating. Even if your MacBook is still usable, it can be completely inconvenient to use, and generally spreads over time. Going back to the idea of repair Tiers, the cost of screen replacement is directly correlated with the Tier, but also with the year and model of your MacBook. If you choose to have your MacBook repaired at the Apple store, expect to spend between $455 and $755 to completely replace the screen.

Apple quotes repairs based on a series of tiers regarding damage and cost. For example, if you have a 13-inch MacBook Air and your child accidentally spills a glass of water on it, this would require a Tier 4 repair.

Tier 4 repairs can cost upwards of $750 or more. This is astronomical and almost 60% of the cost of a new MacBook Air. Apple is aware of this, and they train their employees to suggest forgoing a repair. Instead, they suggest purchasing a new device, while they recycle your broken MacBook free of cost.

Not all broken MacBooks occur because of an accident. Sometimes technology simply gets old. Years of use put a strain on a technological device, and natural wear and tear occur.

Age can show up in a MacBook as random shutdowns, a broken keyboard or trackpad, shortened battery lifetime, port issues, or overheating problems. These problems are all costly to fix and can even be expensive even for older models.

With older MacBooks, such as a broken 2012 MacBook Pro, Apple will often offer to recycle the device for you. The catch is that Apple will still make money off of it by recycling it, and this leaves you without a device and nothing in return.

Instead of fixing technology that will soon become obsolete, or recycling your broken or partially working device for nothing in return, you can sell your device to GoRoostr in order to purchase a new MacBook!

The full cost of repairs depend on the type and level of damage. For instance, replacing the screen under warranty costs less than other types of damage.

If you don’t think you need physical protection for your MacBook, take a look at how much it could cost you should you drop your MacBook or spill something on it.

For a MacBook Air, coverage costs your $249. This doesn’t include anything except the coverage. For a 13” MacBook Pro, the cost is $269. If your screen or external closure is damaged, you’ll have to pay a $99 service fee. Any other damage costs you $299.

Your out-of-pocket costs to repair a broken screen for a MacBook Air under AppleCare+ would be a total of $348. Just remember, you’re only covered for two incidents during a three-year period. Anything other incidents mean you’ll pay the full cost of repairs.

One of the most common repairs is the screen. Pricing begins at $250 (not including labor) and increases based on the age and model of the MacBook. If a hard drive needs to be replaced, you’ll pay anywhere from $225 to $450.

Technicians provide you with a quote based on the type of damage. For instance, you can contact the Apple Genius Bar to get a quote on how much it will cost to repair your MacBook.

Assuming you have a MacBook Air that’s covered under AppleCare+, the least you’ll pay for damage is $348 for a broken screen. This includes the cost of the warranty and the incident. If it happens a second time, it’ll cost you an additional $99.

Without any type of coverage, you have to pay hourly fees along with the cost of the hardware to repair your MacBook. On average, expect to pay over $300 for the simplest repairs.

If paying a third or more of what your MacBook’s worth just for a damaged screen or even a broken key makes you uneasy, don’t let the damage happen to begin with. Prevention costs far less than paying for the repairs afterward.

Any faulty peripheral devices such as printers, external monitors, keyboards, USB drives, mice and trackpads could cause start-up problems or prevent the macOS from initialising the screen. If your MacBook doesn’t turn on, or the screen is not properly configured,  you will get a black screen on your MacBook. Unplug all the accessories to rule out if any device is the culprit.

Connect the charger to your MacBook. Wait for five minutes to allow the charger to charge the battery, just in case the battery has run down. Then press the power button and check for any sounds and lights.

Do you hear a startup chime? Do you hear any noise from the fan, mechanical hard drive or super drive? Press the Caps Lock key on the keyboard; do you see the indicator light on? If your Mac has a touchbar, is the touchbar showing anything? Unplug your USB-C charger and plugin again; do you hear the notification sound from the MacBook speakers?

Someone may have unintentionally hit the brightness keys on the keyboard and completely turned off the screen backlight. If the screen is dimmed, you won’t see the image. It just looks like a black screen. Hit F2 or use the touchbar to increase the brightness on your MacBook.

Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds then release the button. Now you have forced the Mac to return to off-state. Wait for five seconds then press the power button again to reboot your MacBook.

Alternatively, you can press the Control, Command and Power buttons simultaneously to force your Mac to restart again. If performing a power cycle can’t fix the MacBook Pro black screen problem, go on to the next step.

NVRAM (non-volatile random-access memory) and PRAM (Parameter RAM) are the memory that contains user-defined data such as screen brightness, keyboard backlight setting and sound volume setting. If this data is corrupted, you could get a black screen on MacBook Pro.

The Systems Management Controller (SMC) controls the power flow, temperature, keyboard, trackpad, display, fans and so on. Resetting the SMC is another possible quick fix to resolve a black screen on MacBook Pro.

If your Mac seems to be turned on, but your MacBook screen blacking out, determine whether you’re using an Intel CPU or an Apple silicon (CPU), then follow the appropriate instructions

Apple started to use its own design CPU called Apple Silicon in 2020. These are the Mac with M1 and M2 processors. The models are A2337, A2338, A2442, A2485. You can find it on the back cover of your Mac.

If your Mac can boot from macOS Recovery,  there should be no problem with your Mac display hardware. The Mac black screen issue is caused by a software problem. Now you can use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk.

If you can’t load the macOS Recovery, your screen most likely has a hardware issue. Jump to step 11 to fix common basic hardware problems before replacing the screen.

MacBook Pro Safe Mode allows you to boot your MacBook with minimum services. This can eliminate the potential issues with other drivers,  apps and services and prevent your screen from displaying correctly.

If your Mac can boot into Safe mode, software issues are causing your MacBook black screen. It could be a bad video driver, corrupted system files, corrupted Apps and so on.

If the MacBook screen goes black because of macOS corruption, this repair installation procedure may help you to fix the software issues. It requires an internet connection to download macOS from Apple’s server and run the macOS Utilities.

macOS fresh installation will fix any software errors and incompatible settings causing a black screen on your MacBook. In other words,if you still get a black screen on your MacBook after a fresh, clean installation, there must be some fault(s) in your Mac’s hardware. If your Mac has a hardware issue, contact Apple.

If your Mac is under warranty, Apple will fix it for free. Bear in mind that Apple will not provide a data backup service. If you need the data, get a third-party repairer to backup the data before sending it out to Apple.

If your Mac is out of warranty and you want to fix the hardware problem,  get a quote from Apple and at least a quote from a third-party repairer. Usually, a third-party quote is one-third to half Apple’s quote price. Use ourMac Hardware Repair Price Listas a reference if you like.

If you have confirmed the hardware issue causing your MacBook black screen, and you are keen to explore the MacBook hardware world, let’s move on to the next steps – Mac hardware troubleshooting.

If the screen cable that connects the logic board to the screen is loose, it could end up with a black Mac screen.  Apple used this type of “round" screen cable in MacBook Airs manufactured in or before 2017,  and MacBook Pros manufactured in or before 2015.

If your MacBook goes to a black screen after physical impact, and you don’t see any crack on the LCD panel, chances are you have a loose screen cable. Check and clean the screen cable before replacing the screen. Warning: ALWAYS disconnect the charger and internal battery before working with MacBook hardware.

Flexgate is an unofficial term for MacBook Pro display backlight-related issues caused by a fractured display flex cable. The backlight cables are prone to be broken due to the extended stretch of the screen assembly, leading to a black screen on MacBook Pro.

The flexgate issue has affected both 13” and 15” MacBook Pros  Manufactured in 2016/2017 with model numbers A1706, A1707 and A1708.  If you have a black screen on MacBook Pro A1708, A1707 and A1706, pay attention to the “flexgate" issue.

Apple has launched theMacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Programto service the affected MacBook for free. You can find out whether or not your MacBook is eligible for the backlight repair program on Apple’s website.

Even though Apple did make the essential changes to solve the flexgate MacBook Pro 2017/2016 issue, we have come across some 2018/2019 models that might also be affected by this problem and not covered under the free repair program.

In late 2022, most Mac owners have found their devices not covered by the program. Apple charges a premium price for a new screen replacement when the extended program no longer covers your mac.

If the ambient light sensor is faulty, it could keep adjusting the screen brightness to a minimum or even prevent the Mac from starting. As a result, you have a back screen on your Mac.

The ALS share the flex cable with the webcam shown below. You can temporarily unplug the cable. Turn on your Mac to see if your MacBook screen works or not.

If you confirm that the faulty ALS caused the Mac back screen, you can either replace the whole MacBook screen assembly or keep using the old screen with the ALS flex cable disconnected. As the screen is the most expensive component in your MacBook, many users choose the latter solution. Bear in mind that ALS share the cable with the webcam. Therefore the webcam will not work either. You can use an external USB webcam and adjust the screen brightness level manually.

The backlight circuit on the logic board is responsible for boosting the 12V voltage from the battery, to around 50V to power the screen LED  light strip. If the voltage is low or absent, the LED lights will not be on, then your MacBook screen will black out. A faulty backlight circuit is a common problem in MacBook users described as “MacBook Pro screen not working but keyboard lit".

You can use a soldering iron to remove the faulty capacitor, and your screen will work again. The remaining 13 capacitors should handle the power with no problem.Searching for a hair-like crack on the small capacitors is not easy. In our workshop, instead of looking for a hair-like crack, we use a multimeter to test if there is a short circuit in the capacitors. Then we inject a voltage to make the faulty capacitor hot and use athermal imagerycamera to pinpoint the capacitor. Once we have found the faulty capacitor, we use a hot air rework station to replace it. This is a basic skill of chip-level logic board repair.

Based on the quote, I suspect Apple"s repair would involve replacing the "logic board," which includes the most expensive parts of a computer, like the processor, the RAM, the storage, and the graphics processor. Without a logic board, a laptop is essentially just an empty shell and a screen.

Before committing to Apple"s repair or buying a whole new computer, I had one more option to check out: an "unauthorized" Apple repair shop in New York City that fixes Apple products, called Rossmann Repair Group, run by Louis Rossmann. ("Unauthorized," in this case, means Rossmann Repair Group doesn"t follow Apple"s protocols and procedures to repair a device.)

After tax, Rossmann"s repair cost me around $465, and I saved myself about $1,000. Today, my wife"s MacBook Pro is running just as well as it did before she accidentally gave it the water treatment. And she still has all her data, too.

It"s entirely possible that Apple"s repair team could have also replaced the single chip for a dramatically lower repair cost, but Apple takes a no-risk-whatsoever approach when it comes to repairs, especially with liquid damage.

Even if a laptop appears to work properly after a simple minor chip replacement, it"s possible that liquid damage could cause problems later down the line. With that risk in mind, Apple would rather totally replace the logic board, even if it"s going to come with a huge price tag. That way, Apple and its customers have the guaranteed peace of mind that the laptop is fully functional, just as it was when you first unboxed it.

With AppleCare+, you"re covered for two accidental damages, which includes liquid damage. A liquid damage repair with AppleCare+ would cost you $300 on top of the $380 price of AppleCare+ for a 15-inch MacBook Pro. So, had I bought AppleCare+, Apple"s repair would have cost me $680, slightly over $200 more than Rossmann"s repair.

Despite the great experience I had with Rossmann, I would have gone the Apple route had I bought AppleCare+ for my wife"s MacBook Pro. For an extra $200, I"d get that peace of mind and zero risk of further issues related to the original liquid damage.

For those who are out of warranty or didn"t buy AppleCare+ and are facing massive repair quotes from Apple, taking your device to Rossman Repair Group or another trusted unauthorized repair store is realistically good option. If you"re outside of New York City, Rossmann accepts mail-ins for repairs, too. Otherwise, you could always research an unauthorized repair shop near you — be sure to read online reviews, and get a feel for the place before committing your computer and your money. Again, if you don"t go with Apple for first-party repairs, there"s no guarantee their repair will completely fix the problem, especially in the long-term.

The day is October 18, 2021. Apple just released the latest 16 and 14-inch MacBook Pros, and everyone is amazed by all the things that Apple just demoed during the keynote. I was flabbergasted just by looking at the numbers – I’ve seen what the M1 MacBook Pro was capable of doing, and I was very impressed with Apple’s claims on performance improvements and endurance.

After spending the next two days convincing myself that I needed to get the new 16-inch model, I decided to use the Apple trade-in to recoup some of my investments. I owned a 16-inch 2019 MacBook Pro, and while it worked well most of the time, it had a lot of performance issues due to throttling when connected to an external monitor, and the display was also broken. I was given a quote of £430 (~$570) for my machine at the time, which was competitive based on my research for a device with a display issue. I placed my order and trade-in on the same day, and it was smooth sailing from there. I just had to wait for my Mac to be built and shipped to me.

Unfortunately, separating the back panel from the chassis was more tricky than I initially thought, and while I made sure I was gentle and went as slow as possible. I must’ve put too much pressure on the display at one point by accident. When I finished the cleaning process, I cleaned up and put the back cover back on, and opened the lid. That’s when I realized that I had made a massive mistake.

The top center of the display, just below the camera, turned purple, and some pixels looked completely dead. There was a small line going through the entire display. That was the moment I knew it would only last a few days at best. Unsurprisingly, the entire screen went blank three days later. When I took it to an Apple Authorized Repair shop, I was told I would have to pay £804 to get the display fixed – since I was out of warranty and didn’t have Apple Care+.

The resale value of my MacBook Pro was between £1,300-£1,600 ($1,700-$2,100) on eBay, so I knew that I would have to shell out roughly 50% of what my device is worth to get it working again. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy with my silly mistake, and I had no option to go down the route of fixing it myself, since nearly all MacBook parts are only available through Apple. Back in June, I was tempted to get it fixed, but I had just started working for Pocketnow, and I needed a machine that I could use and rely on to do my work, which is why I decided to keep it and use it in clamshell mode, connected to my USB-C monitor.

Due to the issues I was having, I decided to hold off on upgrading – even though the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro was tempting, I would have been limited to using one external display without any hacks. I sometimes use two or three monitors to write content, research, and for coding purposes. I decided to wait, since there were so many fingers pointing at Apple announcing the much-awaited M1-Pro and M1-Max MacBook Pro devices later in September or October.

The trade-in process itself was pretty simple and straightforward. I’ve selected a few options based on the condition of my device, and Apple quoted me £430 for the device with the broken display, at the time. I found his completely fair, given that Apple will most likely repair this device, and then list it as refurbished on Apple.com and sell it for £1,869 (~$2,490). I thought Apple would clearly have a lot of margins on it, and I could get away losing slightly less on my machine, and put it toward the 2021 MacBook Pro purchase.

You might see a recurring theme here, and that’s for a reason. Apple makes their customers believe that the quote is accurate if the trade-in partner inspects the laptop, and confirms the condition of the device, based on the user’s selection. This is all fine, and it works, but what happens if the trade-in partner confirms the state of the MacBook, yet manages to de-value your device to £0.00?

A few days later, after Apple’s trade-in partner inspected my MacBook Pro, I received an email notifying me of the changes. The trade-in window had a note stating that the “Display is not functional/not responsive to touch”. The latter confused me; how could a non-touch enabled display panel respond to touch? Whatever, I thought, I was happy it finally got checked by a professional. I was very happy and satisfied until I looked down at the revised refund trade-in value for my laptop, which went from £430 to £0.00.

I quickly went back to the Apple trade-in page, made the same selection, and double-checked whether I may have put down something wrong. I must’ve done something wrong, I thought to myself, but it turned out that I made the right selection based on the information that is provided by Apple. Based on the state of the device – which is in excellent shape with minimal signs of use – and the rest of the information, I was indeed correct, and I qualified for the quoted value.

On the “screen and enclosure of your Mac in good physical condition?” page, there is a pop-up panel that provides even more information about what the question means. The page asks “Is the screen intact and free of cracks and cosmetic damage? Is the display free of pixel loss, black or white spots and lines? Is the body free of major scratches, dents and liquid damage?” – it’s quite obvious that I put no as a selection, since the display wasn’t in great shape at all; it was blank and had a total pixel loss and a line.

This is where it gets confusing. Apple’s website explains that if you own a device that has a display that doesn’t function properly, it’s still fine to send it as you will likely receive the quoted value. It’s interesting to see that even though the MacBook Pro was described and inspected correctly, the value was revised to nothing. Apple is, of course, generous enough to say that it will happily accept the device for free, which would mean that I’d be giving away even more free goodies to a Trillion dollar company.

Upon contacting Apple support, the representative told me that they cannot do anything regarding the revised evaluation since it was inspected by their partner and they have the right to say whatever. As you can expect, I wasn’t satisfied with the answer, and I have promptly pointed out my quote findings and the result I was expecting. The Apple Staff support person apologized, and repeated the same statement over and over again. It’s out of their control, and their trade-in partner has the last word. While I was fine with this, I told the staff member that they had found the same issue that I had stated, but it was a never-ending loop. I knew that contacting the trade-in partner would likely refer me back to Apple, and it would be a waste of time, given to overly negative Google reviews of the company.

Four days after requesting back my device, I had finally received it in the same box I sent it in, although some of the extra paddings that I included inside were removed for some strange reason. Upon opening the return box, I found my MacBook Pro covered in dust from top to bottom. I’ve never seen a MacBook that dirty, and given that I take extra care of my devices when it gets to protection, it was appalling. The entire device was covered in dust, both outside and inside, near the keyboard and display. While some may say, “it could’ve happened during shipping,” it was clear when I took it out of the box that it was placed in a dirty warehouse, and it received very little to no care.

Upon opening the lid, the display started working again, just enough so I could see that it was missing the entire system, and it wanted to connect to the Wi-Fi to reset and re-download the original system it shipped with originally. When I selected the Wi-Fi in the dropdown menu, the screen would instantly go blank. It did this whenever I reattempted the same action. Fortunately, I had a USB-C to ethernet dongle around, and once I connected it, I could bypass the Wi-Fi selection and begin downloading right away. Sadly, the display would always die, and it wouldn’t let me see any of the options or allow me to react to any prompts by the system.

Apple is strict about what part of its OS you can access from external monitors, and none of the recovery or setup processes are accessible from a non-built-in display. None of them, and believe me, I’ve tried them all.

Once I went through all of the reset options that I could find on Google and on Apple’s own support forums, I decided to just re-install the entire original OS once again, using the ethernet cable. The process went through and seemed to work, but it’s hard to tell as I could only see the screen flash for a few milliseconds after turning off again. I’ve got a glimpse of the recovery menu, but I can’t do much without going through the setup process. I’m back to square one, albeit, I at least have an idea that it’s possible to re-install the OS, and it appears to be working fine.

I have read on a forum that I may have some luck disconnecting the entire display panel from the Macbook itself, which would force the external display method to work. The last thing I wanted to do was remove the back cover once again; therefore, I decided to skip this and move on. I was tired, and I didn’t want to mess with it anymore.

I can see Apple’s counterargument stating that it’s a company policy to send back devices without an operating system to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with, so the user can simply re-install it easily. That’s all fine and great; but the entire process could’ve been much easier and more seamless, allowing external displays is certainly one of them. A person who is much less knowledgeable than myself would face even more problems, and I’m sure that Apple would happily reassure the person that sending back the device, and getting it fixed through Apple can eliminate any and all problems – the only issue is that this was created by Apple itself, yet the person who owns the machine would have to pay extra, and it would also take even more days until the machine could be used once again.

I wrote this on my 2021 MacBook Pro, and while I love this machine, I hope I won’t have to use Apple’s repair services, because I lost all confidence in the company and their repair staff, who doesn’t seem to handle these expensive devices with proper care. My 2019 MacBook Pro is gathering dust behind me on a shelf, waiting for a person to buy it on eBay. Still, it won’t be easy, since I can’t even state that it has an operating system, or re-assure potential buyers that it’s a fully working unit.

The Genius Bar tech told me there was nothing that could really be done since its considered a "vintage" device. I could try to have it repaired by them but there is a flat rate and there will be a high chance that the data will be lost. I couldn"t take that chance and loose the data. One of my friends gave me Rossmann"s information. I contacted them and Kevin told me to bring it over. I was there less than 15 minutes, the tech did some minor work and got my MacBook Air to turn on! Also told me there was no charge! I couldn"t believe it after coming out of the Apple Store loosing my mind due to the potential data loss! These Guys at Rossmann are truly honest individuals!
