But both units feature a 7-in touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite navigation with maps displayed in 2D or 3D. And if you’re replacing an older system that already offered navigation, you’ll still get to see arrow instructions in the gauge cluster.

And for the first time, Porsche has developed different versions for Europe and North America. Units sold on the eastern side of the Atlantic get DAB+ digital radio, while versions shipped across the water are equipped with SiriusXM satellite radio.

There’s also a trip computer and, in the 911, Boxster and Cayman, the option to store personal settings for features like the lights, windscreen wipers, climate control and door locks, depending on what equipment is already fitted to the car.

The new infotainment systems cost $1,475.99 in the U.S. and €1,520.37 in Germany, though you’ll have to pay extra for mapping data. We’ll update this post with prices for other markets when we have them.

A racetrack is the only place to check the real performance of a Porsche Boxster S, a two-seat rocket on wheels. So I set my sights on the Moscow Raceway, the sole international-level circuit in Russia.

From the moment that I nudged the gas pedal of the Boxster S and heard the powerful purr of the 315-horsepower engine directly behind the leather seat, it was clear that no Moscow street could unleash the car"s full potential. Upping the ante, Porsche promised that the vehicle could accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in a mere 4.8 seconds and deliver a top speed of 277 kph.

Several phone calls and e-mails later, the folks at Moscow Raceway agreed to give a photographer and me a couple of hours on their 4-kilometer track if we covered the cost of keeping an ambulance on standby. (The ambulance wasn"t a special requirement for me; any racing enthusiasts who use the track have to pay.)

A thrill shot through me as I stood in the Moscow Raceway"s pit lane on a recent Friday, the morning sun gleaming off the sleek silver Boxster and the open track begging for some action.

But first I had to drive a slow lap with a Moscow Raceway official, who pointed out the most dangerous curves ("People have the most problems crashing on this turn") and checked that no parts of the road or roadside were damaged ("Sign here to show that the track is in perfect condition").

The Boxster S lived up to its name, which comes from the word "boxer," referring to the car"s horizontally opposed, or "boxer," engine, and the word "roadster," referring to its convertible top and two seats. The "S" stands for "Sport."

Making matters worse, I found myself boxed in one morning by an old Volga sedan. Any ordinary car could have gotten out of the jam by backing up onto the sidewalk and pulling around the Volga. But the Boxster"s low clearance meant that I spent a nerve-wracking 20 minutes inching the car backward and forward in an attempt to get out for an urgent meeting.

In this case, the car"s ParkAssist system saved the day by showing the precise distance between the Boxster, the Volga, the sidewalk and another adjacent vehicle as I squirmed my way to freedom.

With a sleek appearance, a roaring engine and an unquenchable thirst to race, the Boxster S boils down to three ingredients: Sexy, Sound and Speed. Perhaps that"s what the "S" in its name should really represent.

Precise, not fanciful. Self-assured, not restrained. Low, wide and sleek. The exterior design of the 718 models is distinguished by sporty edges and clearly defined formal contours.

Striking design: the unmistakable silhouette with the flyline typical of a mid-mounted engine. A broad rear with black accent trim. The cockpit is fully sports-orientated.

The horizontal geometry of the air intakes makes the front end appear even wider – lending it added bite. On the 718 GTS 4.0 models, this impression is further enhanced by the larger air intakes, black external airblades and black front spoiler. The fenders? Unmistakably Porsche. Higher than the hood, they have been styled to give prominence to the design of the headlights, with impressive inner workings and integrated LED daytime running lights. The 718 GTS 4.0 models have tinted front lights.

The side profile emphasises the mid-engined layout. The wheel arches are large – for wheels up to 20 inches. In the 718 T models these are in Titanium Grey; in the 718 GTS 4.0 models in Satin Black. One thing is clear: the 718 models weren"t built for the garage. They were built for unrestrained driving pleasure. So, naturally the lines on the doors direct the air stream to the large side air intakes. To optimally supply the engines with air and produce powerful thrust.

The rear of the 718 models is an expression of maximum sporting performance – and also the top performance of our designers. It is clear, reduced, and anything but conformist. The taillights are flat and also clear in the 718 GTS 4.0 models. Their interior is of a three-dimensional design. Four LED brake lights surround the horizontal taillights. An accent trim between the two taillights makes the rear end look wide.

The rear wing automatically extends from speeds of 78 mph, and reduces lift for better roadholding. Strong finish: the tailpipe, centrally positioned in the rear fascia, with twin tailpipes in the 718 T and 718 S models. In the 718 GTS 4.0 models, the tailpipes are separated in the rear fascia unique to the GTS 4.0.

The 718 Boxster and Cayman models have 18-inch wheels – with a distinctive design. The S models are equipped with 19-inch wheels, the 718 T and 718 GTS 4.0 models with 20-inch wheels in Titanium Grey or Satin Black. On all 718 models, the wheels are alloys – a sports car hallmark. The wide rear wheels provide excellent stability and exceptional cornering performance. Rolling resistance and tire weight are comparatively low, which helps to reduce fuel consumption. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) improves safety. A selection of 20-inch wheels is available in our range of options.

A strong emphasis on the horizontal gives the dashboard design of the 718 models a striking appearance. Without sacrificing the excellent ergonomics for which Porsche is renowned: the ascending center console shortens the reach between the steering wheel and gear lever/selector, while the clear arrangement of function buttons saves time.

Porsche Communication Management (PCM) features a 7-inch touchscreen display. With its high-quality glass surface, it is the aesthetically perfect addition to the center console. The 718 T models have a practical storage compartment, instead of PCM. Our take on ‘digital detox’.

Pure motorsport: the sport steering wheel is derived from the 918 Spyder. The optional GT Sport Steering Wheel with its smaller diameter further enhances the cockpit feel. It is included as standard in the 718 T and 718 GTS 4.0 models, and in the 718 GTS 4.0 models finished in Race-Tex, along with numerous other GTSspecific interior items. The instrument cluster includes three circular instruments with an integrated 4.6-inch color screen. Typical of Porsche: the tachometer in the middle.

What is it that makes the 718 models so special? Their performance, their handling, their design, their generous amount of space with two luggage compartments. But most of all: a mid-engined layout that makes all this possible in the first place.

The 718 and 718 T models come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged horizontally opposed engine with direct fuel injection (DFI), VarioCam Plus and integrated dry-sump lubrication. It develops 300 hp at 6,500 rpm. Maximum torque: 280 lb-ft. With Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 secs, and have a top track speed of 170 mph.

The S models have a 2.5-liter displacement. The result is 350 hp at 6,500 rpm. Maximum torque: 309 lb-ft. This unit – like the one in the 911 Turbo – also comes equipped with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). It ensures a smoother unleashing of power and therefore increased driving pleasure. Its thrust? Goes up to 177 mph. With PDK and Launch Control, the S models sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds.

The 718 GTS 4.0 models offer an enormous performance spectrum. Guaranteed by the powerful 4.0-liter six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with its full 394 hp at 7,000 rpm. The maximum torque: 309 lb-ft. Top track speed: 182 mph.

The 718 models are equipped with a smooth 6-speed manual transmission optimally matched to the respective engine characteristics. The gear lever in the 718 T models is shortened for fast, sporty shift throws. The result: short shift times and an even sportier and more authentic driving experience.

The 7-speed PDK with manual and automatic mode is available as an option. For extremely fast gear changes without interrupting the flow of power. And all with even better acceleration performance. In manual mode, the shift direction simulates that of race cars – to the rear to shift up, forwards to shift down. For a race track driving experience wherever you are.

The optional PASM is an electronic damping control system. The system continuously adjust the damping force on each wheel, based on driving style and current road conditions. The body is also lowered by 10 mm (0.39 in). PASM has two modes, which can be selected using a button on the center console: ‘Normal’, which is a blend of performance and comfort, and ‘Sport’, where the setup is much firmer. The results are tangible: increased driving stability, improved comfort and enhanced performance.

The 718 T and 718 GTS 4.0 models are equipped with PASM Sport Suspension. The body sits 20 mm (0.78 in) lower. The springs are harder and shorter and the anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles are stiffer. The result: direct, agile handling and top cornering performance. For a little more ground clearance and comfort, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), with ride height lowered by 10 mm (0.39 in), is also available for the 718 GTS 4.0 models.

All 718 models are equipped with enhanced Porsche Stability Management (PSM) – an automatic control system helping to maintain stability at the limits of dynamic driving performance. PSM improves traction under acceleration on inconsistent road surfaces. The result is a high level of driving stability – and extraordinary agility at the same time.

Optional for the 718 and 718 S models, standard for the 718 T and 718 GTS 4.0 models: Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV). This system enhances vehicle dynamics and stability by applying variable torque distribution to the rear wheels, in conjunction with a mechanical rear differential lock. For the driver, this means strong resistance to destabilising side forces, outstanding traction and great agility – with precise turn-in and well-balanced load transfer characteristics. What else? Tremendous fun in the corners.

The Sport button enables you to select a suspension set-up where the emphasis is on either comfort or sporty performance. At the push of a button, the engine dynamics become even more direct. In addition, the Sport Exhaust System is automatically activated. In vehicles with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), upshifts take place at higher engine speeds and downshifts happen sooner.

The Sport Chrono Package is standard in the 718 T and 718 GTS 4.0 models and available as an option for the other 718 models. It allows an even sportier tuning of the chassis, engine and transmission. And launches you to unprecedented sporty heights. With significant help from the mode switch on the steering wheel derived from the 918 Spyder. There are four settings to choose from without taking your hand entirely off the wheel: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual, which allows you to adjust the vehicle more closely to your personal driving style.

Performance counts in sport. True for the engine. True for the brakes. That’s why the 718, 718 T and 718 S models are equipped with four-piston aluminum monobloc fixed brake calipers.In the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman and the 718 T models the brake calipers are in black; in the S and GTS 4.0 models the brake calipers are in red. The brake discs have a diameter of 330 mm at the front and 299 mm at the rear. The brakes in the 718 S models are reinforced on the front axle.

In the 718 GTS 4.0 models the brakes were further reinforced and adapted to the high performance: the front axle is equipped with six-piston aluminum Brakes. monobloc fixed brake calipers in red. The brake discs have a diameter of 350 mm at the front and 330 mm at the rear. To make them tougher yet lighter and enable a more rapid response – even under extreme loads – the brake calipers have an enclosed monobloc construction. The pedal travel is short and the biting point precise. The brake discs are crossdrilled and internally vented, which helps to provide improved wet braking and optimum cooling.

Adaptive dampers for greater comfort on everyday drives. Plus a variety of storage solutions, ample legroom and two luggage compartments for plentiful storage space.

As soon as you grab the door handle, or your hand nears the Crest on the front luggage compartment lid or the logos on the rear, Porsche Entry & Drive checks the access code stored in the key. If this is correct, the door or luggage compartment lid unlocks. The engine can then be started and switched off using the electronic ignition starter switch.

A perfect Porsche Boxster, seen in Beijing in 2018. The Porsche was in a superb shape, looking nearly new. The first generation Porsche Boxster is a real rarity in China, as it wasn’t officially sold here.

Still, some examples arrived via the gray market and other non-official channels, and our black Beijing car is one of those. It is painted in a typical Porsche black and it has a dark red interior. The first generation Boxster was made from 1996 until 2004.

It is not easy to maintain a vehicle that was no officially sold in China by the manufacturer. Most dealers will refuse to do any work on them, as Porsche won’t cover ant guarantees or warranties.

A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals combined with polarizers. Liquid crystals do not emit light directlybacklight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome.seven-segment displays, as in a digital clock, are all good examples of devices with these displays. They use the same basic technology, except that arbitrary images are made from a matrix of small pixels, while other displays have larger elements. LCDs can either be normally on (positive) or off (negative), depending on the polarizer arrangement. For example, a character positive LCD with a backlight will have black lettering on a background that is the color of the backlight, and a character negative LCD will have a black background with the letters being of the same color as the backlight. Optical filters are added to white on blue LCDs to give them their characteristic appearance.

LCDs are used in a wide range of applications, including LCD televisions, computer monitors, instrument panels, aircraft cockpit displays, and indoor and outdoor signage. Small LCD screens are common in LCD projectors and portable consumer devices such as digital cameras, watches, calculators, and mobile telephones, including smartphones. LCD screens have replaced heavy, bulky and less energy-efficient cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays in nearly all applications. Each pixel of an LCD typically consists of a layer of molecules aligned between two transparent electrodes, often made of Indium-Tin oxide (ITO) and two polarizing filters (parallel and perpendicular polarizers), the axes of transmission of which are (in most of the cases) perpendicular to each other. Without the liquid crystal between the polarizing filters, light passing through the first filter would be blocked by the second (crossed) polarizer. Before an electric field is applied, the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules is determined by the alignment at the surfaces of electrodes. In a twisted nematic (TN) device, the surface alignment directions at the two electrodes are perpendicular to each other, and so the molecules arrange themselves in a helical structure, or twist. This induces the rotation of the polarization of the incident light, and the device appears gray. If the applied voltage is large enough, the liquid crystal molecules in the center of the layer are almost completely untwisted and the polarization of the incident light is not rotated as it passes through the liquid crystal layer. This light will then be mainly polarized perpendicular to the second filter, and thus be blocked and the pixel will appear black. By controlling the voltage applied across the liquid crystal layer in each pixel, light can be allowed to pass through in varying amounts thus constituting different levels of gray.

Most color LCD systems use the same technique, with color filters used to generate red, green, and blue subpixels. The LCD color filters are made with a photolithography process on large glass sheets that are later glued with other glass sheets containing a TFT array, spacers and liquid crystal, creating several color LCDs that are then cut from one another and laminated with polarizer sheets. Red, green, blue and black photoresists (resists) are used. All resists contain a finely ground powdered pigment, with particles being just 40 nanometers across. The optical effect of a TN device in the voltage-on state is far less dependent on variations in the device thickness than that in the voltage-off state. Because of this, TN displays with low information content and no backlighting are usually operated between crossed polarizers such that they appear bright with no voltage (the eye is much more sensitive to variations in the dark state than the bright state). As most of 2010-era LCDs are used in television sets, monitors and smartphones, they have high-resolution matrix arrays of pixels to display arbitrary images using backlighting with a dark background. When no image is displayed, different arrangements are used. For this purpose, TN LCDs are operated between parallel polarizers, whereas IPS LCDs feature crossed polarizers. In many applications IPS LCDs have replaced TN LCDs, particularly in smartphones. Both the liquid crystal material and the alignment layer material contain ionic compounds. If an electric field of one particular polarity is applied for a long period of time, this ionic material is attracted to the surfaces and degrades the device performance. This is avoided either by applying an alternating current or by reversing the polarity of the electric field as the device is addressed (the response of the liquid crystal layer is identical, regardless of the polarity of the applied field).

In 2016, Panasonic developed IPS LCDs with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, rivaling OLEDs. This technology was later put into mass production as dual layer, dual panel or LMCL (Light Modulating Cell Layer) LCDs.
