BMW 3 series (E36), 5 series (E34, E39), 7 series (E38), 8 series (E31), X5 from 1988-2003 all have the common dead / fading / disappearing pixels on the dashboard instrument cluster / speedometer (also on the board computer) - on the large LCD display that shows valuable data such as the mileage and the on board computer messages. The LCD display pixel problem lies with the OBC ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the instrument cluster. The pictures below show the speedo / instrument cluster"s LCD display before and after the silver ribbon cable KIT replacement (just an example of several board computer / dashboard instrument cluster types):

The instrument cluster units in the BMW E38, E39 and X5 models from 1994-2003 are quite similar - (they were all produced by Siemens VDO) - using the same LCD and the same ribbon cable at all models. There are minor differences, like diesel or petrol powered ones, and also some speedos come with miles others with km/hrs, however the OBC LCD display and the ribbon cable is the same at all 5 series (E39) 7 series (E38) and X5 (E53) and M5 models.

Give a much newer look to your BMW with the facelift chrome rings. These chrome rings fit to BMW 5 series (E39), 7 series (E38), and X5 (E53) from 1994-2003. Easy to apply ring set, no special tools needed.

The OBC unit on the MID console - also known as radio / telephone unit on BMW E39, X5, M5 models from 1996-2003 are identical, using the same OBC LCD and the same ribbon cable. There are minor differences, like one comes with telephone button, others are witout, however the LCD display and the ribbon cable is the same at all 5 series (E39) X5 (E53) and M5 models.

Fits all E39 / E53 MID units assembled with bulbs (not leds). If you have uneven background light on the MID unit (some parts of the LCD are lighter, some are darker), most probably you have dead or almost dead bulbs.

Fits all BMW E38 7 series A/C (air conditioning) climate control units assembled with 2 small LCD"s - just like the one on the picture. Essential for dead or fading pixel repairs.

BMW 8 series (E31), from1988-1999 all have the common disappearing/fading pixels on the on board computer LCD. The problem lies with the ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the MID.

BMW 3 series (E36), from1988-1999 all have the common disappearing / fading or completely dead LCD pixels on the board computer display. The problem lies with the ribbon cable that connects the LCD display to the circuit board of the MID. All 3 variants (8 / 11 / 16 buttons) are available.

This is a very common failure at BMW E90, E91, E92 BMW CD73 stereo / radio / head units, that the central display has missing lines and columns, missing and fading pixels all around the LCD display. Most common at BMW 3 series E90, but E91 E92 and other models are also affected.

This is a very common failure at BMW Bavaria radio units, that the display has missing lines and columns, missing and fading pixels all around the LCD display.

Why do the BMW speedometer LCD displays fail with pixel failure? DIY Pixel repair helps with pixel failure? Well the BMW speedo manufacturers have a few minurtes only to produce a complete BMW speedo with LCD dispay and silver. Because of this, VDO Instrument Cluster manufacturer decied to assemble the BMW LCD display and the silver ribbon cable with heat bonding procedure. This BMW speedometer assembly design makes the contacts of the LCD display and the ribbon cable loose contact very fast, most cases in just a few years. This means, the BMW LCD display show pixel failures, it needs pixel repair, but both the silver ribbon cable and the BMW LCD display work well - only the connection of them is bad, tha is why you have LCD display pixel problems, and you need a pixel fix by a professional, or done DIY with an LCD display pixel repair KIT - a silver cable. How can we improve the quality of the LCD displays and the ribbon cables? Well if you assemble the LCD with the ribbon cable with pressure, no heat bonding, then the pixels of the BMW LCD display will work for an unlimited time. Dashboard LCD displays work on high temperature, so it is the best to avoid using the heat bonding procedure. Pixel repair DIY, or pixel fix by a professional?

The LCD display repair ribbon cable KIT is available in silver cable version. Once the BMW dashboard instrument cluster LCD display pixel failure was properly repaired, the BMW speedometer display will work as new, the silver ribbon cable and the LCD will work for good in the speedometer.

- If the bulbs are out behind the display, then all the rows and colunms do work on the BMW speedometer LCD display, but the background light of the LCD display is uneven, or some cases the BMW LCD display is completely dark. This case no need to repair the pixels, you do not need a silver or carbon ribbon cable, nor a new LCD display. This case you just need to buy the lightbulbs that provide light behind the BMW LCD display.

- If the BMW speedometer LCD display has really pixel problems, then typically lines or colunms of the display are missing. Several cases the characters are broken, numbers and letters shown on the speedometer display are unreadable - tha backlight is even. In case of a real pixel problem, when one or more pixels are missing from the display, you need to buy a silver ribbon cable, a carbon ribbon cable, or some cases a complete BMW LCD display. It really depends on that if it is a BMW, a Mercedes, and Audi, Saab or other make, and of course if it a MID display, a speedometer, a board computer or other LCD dipslay. Most cases, when you have a pixel failure, and you decide to repair it, it"s really worth to buy a set of bulbs too, as bulbs tend to go out during repair - this is due to the massive mechanical shocks experienced during the pixel repair procedure.

Well, most of the BMW pixel repair KITs we sell are designed to be simple and easy to use. The word easy should now be the subject of further discussion. An average BMW speedometer LCD display pixel repair is far more difficult then replacing a lightbulb. You definitely have to have good mechnical skills, and some household tools, such as nippers, screewdrivers, household tape, and other goodies to fix things around the house.

If you have to ask one of these questions, then you definitly should NOT do a BMW speedometer LCD display pixel repair at home (we were asked these questions before, this is not a joke):

Well, Pixelfix is an internationally registered trademark. Pixelfix only sells the highest quality BMW speedometer silver ribbon cables, that are capable of lifetime operation. The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before it was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been incrementally worse.

This Carbon Black (dark metallic blue) over Black Sport Leather 2002 BMW E39 M5 is a desirable color combination in excellent condition. E39 M5’s were driven by their owners because they are extraordinarily good cars—however, proper care and maintenance are more important than strictly mileage. This is just such an example, presenting like a car with the fraction of its actual mileage. Both of its previous owners have fastidiously maintained it. The records and Carfax show frequent oil changes and regular services. Notable recent maintenance includes (within the last 30k miles) the clutch, front and rear shocks (Koni Sport), rear upper control arms, front thrust arms, fuel filter, HVAC panel (replaced due to pixelation), and outside air temperature sensor. In preparation for sale we replaced the instrument cluster LCD screen, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, rear differential seal, front and rear brake pads and rotors, air filters, and gave it fresh oil change. As a result, it is a turn-key M5. You can buy a beat cheap one with similar miles and spend another $4-8k to make it right or buy this one and just enjoy it. The exterior and interior are in excellent condition (described in detail below), belying its age and mileage. It is completely stock. It has never been in an accident, the Carfax is clean, all records, all owners’ manuals, and the original window sticker are included with the sale.

The interior is also in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The seat leather is soft and supple to the touch. There is no excessive seat bolster wear or failed seams. There is no seat twist. The dashboard leather is soft and there are no cracks. The steering wheel has no excessive wear. The instrument cluster, navigation screen and HVAC displays have no failed pixels, due to recent replacement. The BMW Premium sound with DSP is fantastic. There are no check codes on the onboard computer and none of the check engine, DSC, or ABS warning lights are on. Astonishingly, the cup holders do work, but E39 cup holders are terrible so use them at your own risk. All power functions, seat motors, and seat heaters function like they should. The door lock and window regulators work. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds. There is minor discoloration of the trunk floor panel and the tool kit is present along with the DVD / TV module.

Records from both previous owners are included with the sale. They show regular services, inspections, oil changes, fluid flushes, and more. There are no common E39 issues like leaking valve cover gaskets, noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, or inoperative door and window regulators. The short list of recent maintenance includes:

As it sits, this is a turn-key M5 ready to be driven across country. Its low mileage and impeccable condition make it an outlier in a rapidly shrinking population of exceptionally clean E39 M5s. We have priced it accordingly, and believe it represents excellent value. We would like to find a buyer who will continue to care for it and appreciate it for years to come.

The E39 wagon is a 2001 BMW 525i Touring that I purchased from a friend in partial trade for an old hang-glider. The odometer reads just over 160,000 miles, which is odd, because Carfax last reported it at close to 200,000 This 525iT heralded from New Jersey, then Maryland, before moving to the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where it sat outside for the better part of a year—hard living indeed.

After we repaired multiple unmetered air leaks, chewed-through wiring—do weasels crave copper?!—and a cracked rear subframe, and performed a full round of preventative M54 engine maintenance, the 525iT turned out to be a very nice beater. It’s outfitted with two-piece seventeen-inch BBS Style 5 wheels, a self-leveling sport suspension that actually worked once we replaced the air bags, and a host of other options. The hood, hatch lid, and wheel roundel emblems were naked silver, thanks to losing most of their colors; the effect actually looks quite good against the wagon’s Anthracite paint. The standard gray leather interior wore the stains of use, but cleaned up nicely. The cup-holders were broken, but they are useless in the E39 anyway. The wood trim had more cracks than lake ice in April, and in place of the original stereo was a modern unit literally sitting in a vast opening; behind it, you could see where a previous stereo installer had cut a hold in the blower-motor cover to make it fit, which does improve airflow—somewhat. The trifecta of brake, ABS, and DSC lights would undoubtedly be illuminated if some previous owner hadn’t fixed the issue… by removing the bulbs.

[Photo: Peter Thompson]Inside, both BMWs are fantastic places to spend time. Despite pixilated LCD displays, cracked wood trim, soiled carpets, and broken cup-holders, they are both comfortable and luxurious—for beaters. The X5 wins the functional-cup-holders-and-usable-center-storage-compartment contest, while the 525iT just feels less cumbersome to the driver because it is a wagon, not a crossover.
