For driving through hilly terrain, a Grade Logic Control system monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, acceleration and deceleration to avoid hunting and excessive shifting. A lower gear is held for a longer-than-normal period to provide better climbing ability on hills and more engine braking on downhill grades. On i-VTEC models, the 2005 Odyssey is equipped with an intelligent cruise control system that works in combination with the transmission to provide downshifts from fifth to fourth or from fourth to third as required on downhill grades, making effective use of engine braking to control the vehicle"s speed.

Honda"s commitment to safety extends to pedestrians as well as vehicle occupants. To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the Odyssey"s hood and fender areas were designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child pedestrian. Energy-absorbing collapsible hood supports, wiper arms and fender mounts allow substantial deformation in an impact, allowing the engineering team to meet its target for pedestrian safety.
New for 2005, the Odyssey is equipped with power windows in the second row dual sliding doors. The windows feature auto up and down functions. The second row window switches use the recessed push down/pull up design that further helps to reduce the risk of the window pinching an occupant.
Honda Odyssey EX, EX with Leather and Touring models are equipped with dual power sliding doors. The doors can be opened from the outside, when the handle is pulled, or by the master switch on the instrument panel. A lockout switch, on the instrument panel, can disable the door"s automatic operation. The doors can also be independently operated with the keyless entry system. This allows the doors to be opened or closed from a distance of up to 30 feet.
Significant safety features have been built into the Odyssey"s power door system. If the door should encounter any resistance while closing, it will immediately reverse direction. New for 2005, a direct detection system uses sensors built into the rubber seal on the leading edge of the door that detects when an object is in the path of the door. The sensors use three closely spaced wires inside the doors" rubber seal that can touch if contact is made to the outer edge of the seal. When the wires touch, that sends a signal to the doors operating system to reverse direction. The system is extremely sensitive and relatively gentle (reduced load for pinch detection).
Odyssey Touring models feature a power rear tailgate that can be conveniently controlled from four sources: the key fob, the exterior handle (for manual opening), a switch mounted on the underside of the tailgate (for closing), and from a switch on the instrument panel. The tailgate can be manually closed at any time during open or close operation. As a safety feature, the tailgate has an auto detection system (similar to the power sliding door direct detection system) that will reverse direction in the event that something prevents it from closing or opening.
Attention to detail is one trait that helps set the Odyssey apart from the competition. Fit and finish details have been tightened for 2005 with improvements to gaps between body panels and exterior features. The end result is a refined, tight appearance that speaks to the overall quality of the vehicle with the smallest gaps between body panels in the minivan segment.
The 2005 Odyssey manages airflow for an approximate 5 percent gain in coefficient of drag (Cd). Items such as the A pillar, side mirror, wiper layout and the use of underfloor pans have all been designed to minimize air turbulence. These designs result in enhanced fuel economy and less wind noise. Other measures contributing to reduce wind noise levels include dramatically reducing the width of body seams, mounting glass flush with the surrounding body panels, and using double seals around all doors.
The Honda Odyssey utilizes a new style of lightweight sound proofing material that reduces weight and absorbs more noise than traditional insulation. Traditional soundproofing material works by "insulating" the cabin from noise with a thick, heavy layer of foam padding (like carpet padding) on top of a layer of rubber meltsheet (and then adding an additional thin layer of meltsheet). The 2005 Odyssey still uses meltsheet, but the new soundproofing material is comprised of a much thinner layer of lightweight sound absorbing substrate that "absorbs" sound rather than "insulates" or "reflects" it. This new material can save more than 30 pounds of weight compared traditional soundproofing material while providing higher sound deadening performance. (See the next page for a detailed illustration of soundproofing technology.)
The Odyssey complies with all evaporative emissions, on-board diagnostics, and refueling vapor recovery requirements. The fuel vapor canister and filter are rubber mounted for noise isolation and protected against rock and debris damage by a deflection shield. The capacity of the tank has increased by 1-gallon for 2005.
The Odyssey is built on the latest version of Honda"s Global Light Truck Platform and provides the best balance of safety, comfort and performance. Key features that help set the Odyssey apart from the competition include a fully independent front and rear suspension with floating subframes and an ultra rigid platform. Riding on a 118.1-inch wheelbase, the Odyssey"s platform uses heavy duty MacPherson struts in the front and a double wishbone multi-link rear suspension for performance levels that approach a level usually reserved for luxury sedans - a feel that no other minivan can duplicate! Already considered to be the best handling minivan, the redesigned Odyssey chassis results in a more direct and linear performance feeling with a firm and stable character that still provides a supple ride quality that is relaxed and quiet.
The 2005 Honda Odyssey uses a new generation of Honda"s Global Light Truck Platform that incorporates enhanced levels of safety (ACE body structure) with class leading rigidity and performance. The Global Light Truck Platform is engineered to balance the rugged traits of a light duty truck frame with high levels of safety, handling and fuel economy. The unit body frame construction is comprised of three main units - the front subframe, the main frame and the rear subframe - and those sections are integrated into the body construction. The benefit of the unit body construction (compared to traditional body on frame construction) is lighter weight, better handling and enhanced energy absorption capabilities. MacPherson struts are used for the front suspension and a space saving double wishbone with trailing arm suspension is used in the rear.
Odyssey brake components are large in capacity to help handle heavy cargo and towing loads. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has four sensing and activating channels to detect a wheel on the verge of lock up. In the event this occurs, brake pressure is held, then reduced, to permit that wheel to regain traction before full braking resumes. The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system electronically regulates front-to-rear brake effort proportioning to help compensate for placement of cargo in the vehicle and maintain an optimum braking load on front and rear wheels for enhanced stopping characteristics.
The VSA system in the Odyssey has been carefully calibrated to add handling stability and predictability with minimal intrusion to the driving experience. Its operation is designed to be transparent, so drivers may not even notice when VSA is working. Whenever the system is actively enhancing the vehicle"s stability, an indicator light flashes on the instrument panel. In addition, VSA"s stability enhancement and traction control can be turned off with a cockpit switch while still leaving the Anti-lock Braking System fully functional.
The Odyssey features 16 x 7-inch wheels and 235/65 R16 tires on LX, EX, and EX with Leather models. LX models use Bridgestone Turanza all-season tires and the EX and EX with Leather models use Michelin LX4 all season tires. The Touring edition is equipped with the Michelin PAX System, a unique style of extended mobility tire (see below for more information.) The Odyssey EX and EX with Leather models have alloy wheels and the Odyssey LX model has steel wheels with full wheel covers. The spare tire on LX, EX and EX with Leather models is a compact size (T135/80D17) that is mounted flush inside the panel of the driver-side wall of the third row.
A phase-in program has been created with Honda dealers to further insure that customers will have quick and convenient access to wheel repair at the time of the 2005 Odyssey launch. Honda dealers are stocking complete wheel assemblies that can be switched with a flat PAX tire. Under normal use conditions, the repair is covered under the tire"s road hazard warranty for the first 50 percent of tread life and then pro-rated just like any typical road hazard warranty for a new tire. In addition to the dealer program, Michelin dealers are in the process of installing PAX tire mounting and dismounting capabilities to further enhance the convenience of PAX tires.

The conceptual model for the interior was based on a space age jet with an emphasis on technology, style and first class accommodations. The second row, inspired by futuristic business jet seating accommodations, focuses attention on individual comfort with flexibility, adjustability and personal space as key priorities. With the all-new 2005 Odyssey, Honda has set a new benchmark for minivan interiors. For starters, industry-leading standard safety items have been added to all trim levels that now include all of Honda"s "Safety for Everyone" interior equipment - front side airbags with an Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) and side curtain airbag protection (with rollover sensors) in all three rows. Next, the innovative interior made famous by the previous generation Odyssey now has even more ingenious features and improvements: the 3rd Row Magic Seat® now has a 60/40 split and one-motion operation, a Stowable 2nd Row Plus One Seat™ delivers eight occupant seating on EX and EX with Leather models, and new in-floor storage area between the first and second rows now provides even greater utility. Finally, an ultra-luxurious and high-tech Touring model has been added that brings the sophistication and luxury level of the Odyssey into a class of its own. More than just evolution, the 2005 Odyssey interior has re-defined itself in the same way it originally made a name for itself. While some minivans focus attention on just one or a few interior features, the attention to detail on the Odyssey focuses on every interior feature.
Honda DVD Entertainment System™ with 9-inch display, integrated remote control, and wireless headsets w/personal surround sound (available EX with Leather and Touring)
While some minivan manufacturers have modified interior designs to meet the Odyssey"s class leading functionality, the Odyssey has moved its already class-leading functionality into new territory for the minivan - function with real style and sophistication. On every trim level - the LX, EX, EX with Leather and Touring - the seats now provide unique features that deliver new levels of luxury and value for each trim level. As before, cloth seats are standard on the LX and EX, while leather seating, logically, is standard on the EX with Leather and on the new Touring model. Notable new features for 2005 include eight-passenger seating (exclusively on the EX and EX with Leather) achieved with the addition of a Stowable 2nd Row PlusOne™ Seat that fits between the two full-size second row captains chairs.
For 2005, the front row captains chairs are taller (+50mm) and slightly wider (+5mm) with a cushion shape designed to accommodate more body types and improve driving posture. The design focuses on posture stabilization during acceleration and cruising (longitudinal), and during cornering (lateral) with the ultimate goal of reducing fatigue. Vibration reduction features have been built into the spring designs and frames of the new seats. The driver"s seat has a vertical adjustment of 40mm (1.5 inches). A new feature on leather-equipped models is the addition of adjustable armrests.
Honda engineers closely studied the patterns of how people use the second row of a minivan. They discovered that the second row is primarily used for people, and that comfort was the highest priority. The Odyssey"s second row uses two full-size captain"s chairs that offer superior comfort and versatility. The captains seats are removable, slide fore and aft up to 10 inches, feature movable armrests on both sides and can be positioned together (bench style), separately with nothing in between, or separate with a PlusOne seat in between for eight passenger seating (exclusive to EX and EX with Leather models). The sliding feature helps accommodate people and cargo with the ability to move seats to accommodate the situation. Also, the second row seats use the slide-forward feature to allow easier ingress and egress to the third row (similar to a coupe front seat). This results in a large walk through area when the second row doors are open.
Honda Odyssey EX and EX with Leather models come equipped with a Stowable 2nd-Row PlusOne™ Seat that can accommodate an eighth occupant. The seat, which features three point seatbelts, fits between the two captains chairs in the second row and attaches to mounting points in the floor. The seat can recline, and when not in use the seat folds forward and can double as a console complete with a storage tray. If a center walk-through is desired, the seat can be removed and stowed in the In-Floor Storage area between the first and second rows.
The Honda Magic Seat® set the standard for third row functionality in the minivan world. Adding to this popular innovation for 2005, the third row now features a 60/40 split and offers top of the class convenience for operation thanks to a new one-motion operation that makes access to the cargo area simple and fast. A lever located on the back of the seat (one for each of the 60/40 split sections) allows for easy fold down operation. To put the seat down, the user simply pulls on the lever to release the latch and the seat retracts down into its in-floor storage area - in one smooth motion - creating a flat floor cargo area. The system is spring loaded and is designed to be operated with just one hand. Additionally, the headrests do not have to be removed to put the seat down, and the hinges for the seat are designed to lie flat making it easier to stack items like plywood panels.
The 2005 Odyssey provides 17 beverage holders on Touring models and 15 beverage holders on LX, EX and EX with Leather models. The two additional beverage holders on the Touring model are located in the exclusive second row storage console. The beverage holders can accommodate drink sizes large and small, and bottle holders are integrated into door panels on the first and second rows.
The driving position of the 2005 Odyssey has been optimized for comfort and performance. For comfort, the steering tilt range has increased to 1.6 inches (+0.4 inches). For a stronger performance feel, the top of the steering wheel angle (relative to the driver) has been positioned 4.5 degrees closer to vertical. For both comfort and performance, lateral displacement of the steering wheel has been eliminated so the center of the steering wheel lines up directly with the centerline of the driver and the steering wheel is 22mm closer to the driver.
From a packaging and flexibility standpoint, the minivan is still the ultimate vehicle for maximum interior volume and space utilization. The Odyssey makes the most of this superior trait and goes even further for 2005.
The instrument panel and controls reflect the style and sophistication of the 2005 Odyssey in addition to the typical Honda attention to detail and class leading ergonomics. The deeply sculpted two-tone dashboard is similar to designs used on fine luxury sedans. Careful attention has been paid to shape, tactile feel, fit and finish on every surface and control ranging from the metallic decor trim pieces to the available flipdown 8-inch navigation screen on models with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System. The instrument panel is sloped so that both primary and secondary controls are within easy reach.
Instruments and gauges are housed in a pod directly in front of the driver and feature a progressive meter illumination program that begins when the driver enters the vehicle. The LX, EX and EX with Leather trim levels include a tachometer, an illuminated and easy-to-read speedometer with two LCD digital trip odometers, a main LCD digital odometer and a smart maintenance display that tracks oil life and other maintenance items. The fuel gauge and temperature gauge are to the right of the speedometer, and a gear selector indicator is to the left. Various indicator lights for SRS, ABS, oil pressure, battery, etc., are also housed in the main instrument pod. The Touring model adds a Multi-Information Display that shows fuel economy, independent tire pressures, compass information, miles to empty and smart maintenance information along with user-customizable options throughout the vehicle (see following pages for a more detailed description).
Further refinement to the controls includes an instrument panel mounted gear-shift lever within convenient reach from the steering wheel. The shifter now features a button to engage and disengage the overdrive feature of the transmission for towing and/or driving in hilly terrain.
The driver"s SRS module is housed in the steering wheel. Cruise control, as well as audio controls on EX and above models, and MID controls on Touring models, are also mounted on the steering wheel. The windshield wiper controls and lighting controls are also mounted on stalks on either side of the steering wheel, in typical Honda fashion.
On/off buttons for the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and traction control are mounted on the instrument panel, just to the left of the steering wheel, as are controls for the available power moonroof (EX with Leather and Touring) and dual sliding doors (EX and above). Illuminated power window and lock controls are mounted on the driver"s door. EX and above models feature illuminated steering wheel controls for the audio system and cruise control switch.
The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system uses two air-conditioning condensers and two heater cores to create a dual zone climate control for front and rear passengers on all trim levels. One set of controls serve the front of the interior and one set serves the rear passenger area. The high capacity condenser for the air-conditioning system has an internal receiver tank that first runs the liquid refrigerant through a sub-cooling condenser, then to the main condenser. The system is efficient and lightweight compared to traditional setups.
Inside, the front controls on the Odyssey LX are mounted centrally on the center console for easy accessibility and feature large rotary knobs and electrical switches. Air conditioning and a micron air-filtration system are standard. Both the front and the rear systems can be controlled from the driver"s HVAC panel, or the driver can switch control of the rear system to the panel in the rear passenger compartment.
This system allows the front driver, front passenger and rear passengers to select independent temperature settings. In the 2005 Odyssey, the passengers in the rear seats can enjoy more liberal air conditioning controls than in the conventional model. For the rear, the independent automatic climate control system features a digital display for the temperature and fan. Those in the rear can independently select a temperature setting different from the front zones and it will be maintained automatically. The 5-step fan setting can also be controlled automatically or manually.
The Odyssey"s audio system provides a wide variety of features and options for each trim level. The LX models feature an AM/FM stereo radio with a CD player and an auxiliary input (four speakers, 120 watts). EX models add a six-disc in-dash CD changer and come pre-wired for accessory XM Satellite Radio equipment (six speakers, 120 watts). Steering wheel mounted audio controls are standard on EX and above models. The audio system and the available Honda DVD Entertainment System can both be controlled by voice recognition on EX with Leather and Touring models equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System.
The Touring model provides a premium audio system with a 360-watt amplifier and a total of seven speakers (including a subwoofer) in addition to the impressive features already found on EX models. For superb sound quality, the four front and rear speakers are a 17cm Kevlar- injected polypropylene mid-range speaker. The front tweeters use aluminum dome construction for enhanced high-frequency sound clarity. The compact, large capacity subwoofer is positioned under the front passenger seat.
Odyssey EX, EX models with Leather and the Touring model come pre-wired for XM Satellite Radio equipment that can be added as a dealer-installed accessory. XM Satellite Radio is a factory-installed feature on models that have the available factory installed Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (EX with Leather and Touring models). After a 90-day free trial service, customers will have the option to subscribe to XM Satellite Radio on these models, which includes 120 radio stations including music, news, sports, talk, local weather, traffic and other entertainment in a CD-quality digital format. The XM radio display can indicate the artist"s name, track title, XM channel and category of music.
The 2005 Honda Odyssey uses advanced technology to create one of the quietest automotive interiors on the road. Models equipped with the leather interior (which includes some EX models and the Touring model) have Active Noise Control (ANC). The ANC system uses a microphone at the front of the vehicle interior to create "anti-noise" through the audio system speakers.
The Odyssey can be equipped with an available factory-installed Honda DVD Entertainment System for rear passengers. This multi-faceted system features a 9-inch wide screen LCD display (the largest factory-installed screen available in a minivan) that flips down from the ceiling at the push of a button for easy viewing. The extended capabilities of the system allow for either DVD, CD, radio, available XM Radio and auxiliary accessories (such as video games, VCRs or cameras) to be played in the rear seating areas through headphones while the front passengers listen to a different audio source.
The DVD player can be conveniently controlled from three sources - the front audio system controls, the integrated wireless remote control (that stores near the LCD screen), or through voice activation on models equipped with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System. Additional audio and video input jacks allow for a wide variety of additional equipment ranging from camcorders to VCRs to game consoles - to be attached to the system. The system comes complete with two infrared (IR) wireless headphones and a wireless remote control as standard equipment. For convenient night use, the remote control is illuminated.
The Honda Satellite-Linked DVD Honda Navigation System represents the latest and most intelligent navigation system from Honda to date with greatly enhanced capabilities for 2005. This industry leading system features advanced voice recognition, a larger 8-inch touch screen display (+2-inch), and an expanded database that covers virtually all U.S. roads and 7 million points of interest (compared to four million or less for many systems currently on the market).
Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. When navigating freeways, a split screen design enhances on-screen information with a "map view" and "3-D" route visualization of freeways simultaneously- which helps make navigation information easier to understand. The system is linked to the car"s audio system, so driving instructions can be heard over the speaker system, and the voice recognition feature adds a new realm of control to the navigation system.
The Honda Satellite-Linked DVD Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle"s DVD-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle"s location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.
The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition system, the touch screen display, or by the joystick on the instrument panel. The voice recognition system works when the "talk" button, located on the steering wheel, is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," or "find nearest ATM" and can also recognize street names. The voice recognition system has a vocabulary of approximately 637 commands and can recognize virtually any English-spoken accent.
The 8-inch LCD display is a touch screen that allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or spell out a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. (The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout.) Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging. When disc loading is selected for the 6-disc CD changer, the motorized screen conveniently tilts down to allow access to the CD loader located behind the screen.
To keep the driver informed of the vehicle"s status and to access multiple electronic functions, the Odyssey Touring model has a Multi-Information Display (MID). This LCD dot matrix backlit screen and its push-button controls are located on the right side of the steering wheel. The MID is the interface for odometer/trip odometer, outside temperature, compass, trip computer with miles to empty etc., custom memory settings, and vehicle warnings. Maintenance Minder alerts are also presented via the MID (see the Engine section of this press kit for more detail on Maintenance Minder).
The new Odyssey is protected by a variety of anti-theft features. All models now feature the "wave" key for door and ignition and locks. This type of lock and key combination is much more resistant to copying and "picking" than conventional designs. Door and hood locks and their operating cables are now more thoroughly protected to prevent a "Slim Jim" or other jimmying device from being used to force entry. The engine immobilizer system used on the 2005 Odyssey shut down the engine"s electronic control unit (ECU) has been further enhanced with the addition of a rolling code.
Excellent outward visibility is a hallmark of Honda design and a key feature for the 2005 Honda Odyssey. The Odyssey provides excellent sight lines for the driver in all key areas including a commanding eye point level of 1378mm (54.2 inches) and a short forward invisible length of 6.6m (21.7 feet). Forward invisible length is the distance a driver needs to look to see the ground in front of the vehicle.
The 2005 Odyssey is more customizable than ever with a wide range of accessories for the interior, body and powertrain. The following items are available on some or all trim levels:
American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced in October of 2003 plans to apply advanced safety technologies to the full range of Honda and Acura products over the next several years in its "Safety for Everyone" commitment (see Overview section for full Safety for Everyone information). The goal of "Safety for Everyone" is to provide high levels of safety protection for all Honda and Acura customers and for all road users, by applying Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags and Anti-Lock Brakes as standard equipment before the end of calendar year 2006. Furthermore, all Honda and Acura light trucks, including all SUVs and the Odyssey, will be equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and rollover sensors for side curtain airbag deployment before the end of calendar year 2006. The Odyssey is the first vehicle in Honda"s lineup to include all of the safety features of Honda"s Safety for Everyone commitment.
Honda"s innovative new Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, offering enhanced occupant protection with reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles, will be applied to all new vehicle platforms in the U.S. and globally over the next six to seven years. The 2005 model Honda Odyssey minivan and 2005 Acura RL sedan will be the first U.S. models to carry this new technology. (The first ever Honda vehicle to feature ACE technology worldwide was the Honda Life, a minicar for the Japan market.)
As a result of Honda"s "Safety for Everyone" commitment, the 2005 Honda Odyssey is equipped with the industry"s highest level of standard safety equipment for a minivan. In addition to the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure (see body section), the Odyssey interior provides the following active safety equipment as standard on every trim level:
The Odyssey"s front airbags can deploy at one of two rates. Deployment of the driver"s front airbag takes into account the severity of the crash, whether or not the driver"s seat belt is fastened and the position of the driver"s seat. During a lower speed collision, the airbag inflators are triggered in sequence, resulting in overall airbag deployment with less initial force. The same sequence is also utilized regardless of collision speed if the driver"s seat is close to the full forward position. During a higher speed collision, if the driver"s seat is far from the full frontal position, both inflators operate simultaneously for full, immediate inflation. Airbag deployment on the front passenger"s airbag is regulated by crash severity, seatbelt usage as well as the weight of the occupant. Sensors under the seat gauge occupant weight and if the total weight on the passenger seat is less than the NHTSA-specified MVSS specifications, the airbag system will not deploy, minimizing the potential for injury to children (an indicator lamp on the instrument panel will indicate this situation). Similar to what is available on the driver"s side, the airbags are deployed at the speed appropriate to the speed and severity of the collision - slower for lower speed collisions, more quickly for higher speeds.
The driver"s airbag is located in the steering wheel hub and the passenger"s airbag is located on top of the dash. As in all Honda vehicles, the front passenger"s airbag is designed to deploy upward toward the windshield and then back toward the occupant. This provides a large cushion to help protect the front passenger while reducing the likelihood of injury resulting from airbag deployment.
Like other Honda models, the Odyssey is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags to help safeguard the driver and front passenger from side-impact injury. An innovative occupant position detection system is used to assure that the passenger"s side airbag has a clear path for deployment. In the event a child (or a small-statured adult) leans into the deployment path of the side airbag, a seven-segment antenna system built within the backrest signals this condition to an electronic control unit (ECU) also located within the seat. The ECU then deactivates the side air bag from functioning and triggers a "SIDE AIRBAG OFF" indicator light in the instrument cluster. After the front occupant returns to a normal seating position, the side air bag module automatically resumes full-functional status.
For 2005, all three rows of occupants are protected by Honda"s new Three-Row Side Curtain Airbag with Rollover Sensor System, which is standard equipment on all Odyssey models - a first for the minivan segment. The side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof in the event of a sufficient side impact, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll rate sensor, located underneath the front passenger seat, along with multiple G sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly.
One month of intense research over the internet(T-BHP mostly), at the car dealerships and a few test drives have finally materialized in the form of us owning a Honda City V MT. This post is about my journey since a month in a lookout for a car that would fit all our needs(to start with) and then go on to satisfy our whims and fantasies.
Felt that if we could stretch the budget by 50k, we could go for a wonderful sedan like Fiesta. It had been a dream to own a Honda/ Toyota vehicle and the idea of stretching that far(by 3 lacs) didn"t seem so good until I read a few articles and ownership reports here on T-BHP.
2. Fiat Linea - Later dropped this due to concern about its power, city drive-ablility, after sales and service issues, etc. I personally did not feel great about the appearance of the plastic components in the interior of this car. On the plus point, I noticed that the stock music system was that of Blaupunkt and the high end versions had Auto AC. This car is surely high on features.
City felt much smoother to drive but getting in and out were a bit of an issue initially(since I am used to Santro). It had more space for the people in the rear compared to the Fiesta. I liked the interiors and the stock music system of City much better than that of the Fiesta.
My confidence was top-notch while test-driving Fiesta, it made me feel at home. Driving City made me feel like I was in a big car and I was a bit skeptical about managing bumper to bumper traffic and being able to turn the vehicle in a U-turn. City also had all the concerns about upgrading like getting accessories after-market(Upgrading the music system or getting rear parking sensors, etc might void the respective warranty if not done in the way suggested). A feature that I did not like much in Fiesta was its indicator and headlamp switches.
Both cars had their pros and cons and on deliberation we finalised that since we are not planning for another car for atleast 5-6 years, we could aswell go for a Honda now. So, we finally chose Honda City 1.5 V MT - Alabaster Silver. We got everything on our wanted and optional lists out of a new car except for the Auto AC feature. I feel Honda could have gone ahead and provided Auto AC and reserve parking sensors as standard fitments in the car.
The Honda Civic(Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. Since 2000, the Civic has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. As of 2021Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda"s global car line-up.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
Honda, after establishing itself as a leading manufacturer of motorcycles during the 1950s, began production of automobiles in 1963.N360 minicar, compliant with Kei car specifications for the Japanese market, for the 1967 model year. The car had a transverse-mounted front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) layout, which would be adopted for the later Honda 1300 (1970) and Civic (1972) models.kei cars plateaued and waned in the early 1970s.
It was Honda"s first model to have an impact in the export market. It became one of the most influential automotive designs of the 1970s, with the Volkswagen Golf (1974), Ford Fiesta (1976), and Fiat Ritmo (1978) showing similarities as transverse-FF, truncated-trapezoidal hatchbacks occupying a size niche between minicars and compact sedans. The Renault 5 was introduced six months before the Honda Civic which appeared later in July.Accord (1976) and Prelude (1978) models. In Japan, the Civic was the first fully modern compact car in the European style, offering a level of prestige never before seen in this class in the market. The Civic quickly inspired Japanese domestic manufacturers to respond in kind, with models like the Mazda Familia AP, Daihatsu Charade, and Mitsubishi Mirage.
The first-generation Civic was introduced on 11 July 1972, but sold as a 1973 model in Japan. It was equipped with a 1,169 cc (71.3 cu in) four-cylinder water-cooled engine and featured front power disc brakes, reclining vinyl bucket seats, simulated wood trim on the dashboard, as well as optional air conditioning and an AM/FM radio. The Civic was available as a two- or four-door fastback sedan, three- and a five-door hatchback, as well as a five-door station wagon. Because of the 1973 oil crisis, consumer demand for fuel efficient vehicles was high, and because of the engine being able to run on either leaded or unleaded fuel, it gave drivers fuel choice flexibility over other vehicles. The CVCC engine debuted in December 1973, with a head design that allowed for more efficient combustion, and as a benefit the CVCC system did not require a catalytic converter or unleaded fuel to meet 1975 Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards for hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.Honda Accord in 1976.
The second-generation Civic was introduced in June 1979 as a 1980 model. It was larger, had a more angular shape, and came with increased engine power. All Civic engines now used the CVCC design, which added a third valve per cylinder; this introduced lean-burn swirl technology. This generation was available with a 1,335 cc ("1300") engine and with an optional 1,488 cc ("1500") version; power outputs varied considerably between Japan, Europe, North America, and other markets. Three transmissions were offered: a four-speed manual (on base models), a five-speed manual, and a two-speed semi-automatic Honda had previously called the "Hondamatic". The second generation Civic was offered as a three-door hatchback, a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback and a five-door wagon.
The third-generation Civic was released in September 1983 for the 1984 model year. The separate five-door hatchback and wagon models were merged into a five-door "shuttle wagon" or "wagovan" sometimes referred to colloquially as a "breadbox" because of its appearance, called the Honda Civic Shuttle. An additional two-seat coupe style—labeled CRX—was introduced, noted for its compact dimensions and light weight. The third generation Civic saw the introduction of the long running four-cylinder D series engine including a new 1.5 L (91.5 cu in) CVCC engine producing 76 HP. 1984 also saw the release of a high-performance Si model for the Japanese market, featuring upgraded suspension and the 1.6 L (97.6 cu in) DOHC ZC engine which was rated at 130 PS (128 HP). Si models were offered in the U.S. as a 3-door Civic Si hatchback and the CRX Si variant with a 91 horsepower (68 kW) fuel-injected SOHC 12-valve engine. A 4WD configuration with different transmission mounts was introduced for the first time in 1984, and later upgraded in 1987. It delivered a fuel economy of around 28 mpg highway. The 4WD system was push-button operated until improved in 1987 when the rear wheels would engage automatically once the front wheels lost traction. This new system was called "Realtime" which used a "viscous coupler" connecting two propeller shafts between the front and rear axles. The manual transmission featured a synchronized 6th gear, called "SL", or "Super-Low", which was used for high torque at very low speeds. The "Realtime" idea is still utilized to this day but includes technological improvements since the first system. Starting with 1985, Japanese Civics were now exclusive to Honda Verno and Honda Clio. A four-door version called the Ballade was built, under agreement, by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, models were 1300, 1500, 1500i and 1600i DOHC 1.6 injection.
Introduced in September 1991 for the 1992 model year, the redesigned Civic featured increased dimensions, as well as more aerodynamic styling. The wagon variant was now only available in the Japanese market where the previous generation wagon was carried over until 1995. The efficiency of the previous HF model was replaced by the VX hatchback which, with an EPA rating of 48/55 MPG, was Honda"s most fuel efficient model sold at the time. In North America, the Si featured a 1.6-liter SOHC VTEC valve train, whereas the VX featured the VTEC-E. The Japanese Si featured a 1.6-liter DOHC non-VTEC valve train D16A9. Continuing in the sporty tradition of the original Civic SiR, Honda sold several similarly equipped variants of the fifth generation car, still referred to as the Civic SiR, in Japan, Asia and Europe. In South Africa, MBSA (Mercedes Benz of SA) built the Civic as the Ballade only in 4-door sedan. A special model was the 180i with the B18B4, that was fitted to Ballade models. A new body style was introduced with this generation called the Civic Coupé, based from the Civic Ferio sedan, and was sold in North America, Europe and Japan. The fifth-generation remains popular among tuners and racers alike.
Introduced in September 1995 for the 1996 model year, the sixth-generation featured updated styling although less radical than previous redesigns. Suspension and engine options were available along with their first Natural Gas Powered Civic, the GX. In the United States, model year 1996 to 2000 the Civic was sold under the CX, DX, EX, EXR, HX, LX, and for Canada, SE, and Si trims; all base models were made with 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (Honda D engine). The CX, DX and LX all have SOHC (D16Y7) 4-cylinder engines; whereas the EX has a 1.6L 16-valve SOHC VTEC (D16Y8) engine producing 127 hp (95 kW), and the HX has a D16Y5 VTEC-E engine producing 115 hp (86 kW). The USDM Si and Canadian SiR came with a 1.6L 16-valve DOHC VTEC (B16A2) engine producing 160 hp (119 kW). The first Civic Si coupe EM1 was introduced in 1999 and was produced until 2000. Europe saw a DOHC 1.6 VTi hatchback and sedan and a DOHC 1.8L engine was available for the Domani related 5-door liftback and estate. In Canada, the Acura EL is based on the Civic, and was replaced by the CSX in 2006.
The seventh-generation Civic was released in September 2000, for the 2001 model year. While the redesign retained the previous generation"s exterior dimensions, interior space was improved in part by using a flat rear floor thus bumping up Civic to a compact car size segment. The front suspension was changed from that of a double wishbone to a MacPherson strut, in order to lower costs, as well as allow more engine bay room for the newly introduced Honda K-series engine. Power was also increased on some trim levels. The four main trim levels were DX, LX, EX and HX. The Civic Coupe was no longer sold in Japan starting with this generation.
In North America, coupe and sedan body styles were available, except for the Si (SiR in Canada) which was offered only as a three-door hatchback.i-VTEC engine and using the three-door hatchback body style. This generation saw Honda introduce their first Civic Hybrid, powered by a 1.3-liter engine.
