IPS (In-Plane Switching) lcd is still a type of TFT LCD, IPS TFT is also called SFT LCD (supper fine tft ),different to regular tft in TN (Twisted Nematic) mode, theIPS LCD liquid crystal elements inside the tft lcd cell, they are arrayed in plane inside the lcd cell when power off, so the light can not transmit it via theIPS lcdwhen power off, When power on, the liquid crystal elements inside the IPS tft would switch in a small angle, then the light would go through the IPS lcd display, then the display on since light go through the IPS display, the switching angle is related to the input power, the switch angle is related to the input power value of IPS LCD, the more switch angle, the more light would transmit the IPS LCD, we call it negative display mode.

The regular tft lcd, it is a-si TN (Twisted Nematic) tft lcd, its liquid crystal elements are arrayed in vertical type, the light could transmit the regularTFT LCDwhen power off. When power on, the liquid crystal twist in some angle, then it block the light transmit the tft lcd, then make the display elements display on by this way, the liquid crystal twist angle is also related to the input power, the more twist angle, the more light would be blocked by the tft lcd, it is tft lcd working mode.

A TFT lcd display is vivid and colorful than a common monochrome lcd display. TFT refreshes more quickly response than a monochrome LCD display and shows motion more smoothly. TFT displays use more electricity in driving than monochrome LCD screens, so they not only cost more in the first place, but they are also more expensive to drive tft lcd screen. The two most common types of TFT LCDs are IPS and TN displays.

TrendForce observes that current demand for monitor panels is weak, and brands are poorly motivated to stock goods. At the same time, the implementation of production cuts by panel manufacturers has played a role and room for price negotiation has gradually narrowed. At present, the decline in panel pricing has slowed. Prices of small-size TN panels below 21.5 inches (inclusive) are expected to cease declining in October due to reduced supply and flat demand. As for mainstream sizes such as 23.8 and 27-inch, price declines are expected to be within US$1.5. The current demand for notebook panels is also weak and customers must still face high inventory issues and are relatively unwilling to buy panels. Panel makers are also trying to slow the decline in panel prices through their implementation of production reduction plans. Declining panel prices are currently expected to continue abating in October. Pricing for 14-inch and 15.6-inch HD TN panels are expected to drop by US$0.2~0.3, falling from a 1.8% drop in September to 0.7%, while pricing for 14-inch and 15.6-inch FHD IPS panels are expected to fall by US$1~1.2, falling from a 3.4% drop in September to 2.4%.

A lot of consumers wonder how manufacturers determine the LCD display panel prices. After all, display solutions such as TFT LCDs and HMI touch screens do not always come cheap. And sometimes, a few products that can indeed be purchased for lower prices may come with several quality issues.

Hence, we’ve rounded up a list of factors that influence how to display modules such as TFTs, LCD, and touch screens are priced. You can also use these factors to evaluate to whom you should place your next orders for your display solutions.

LCD fluids are used in altering the light orientation passing through glass substrates. Hence, this causes the panel’s active pixels to darken. Different kinds of LCD panel fluids provide unique characteristics and change a panel’s viewing angle, temperature range, and display clarity.

TN fluid contains liquid crystal substances that allow light to pass through by twisting and untwisting at a 90-degree angle. This display technology is available in monochrome; that is, black characters against a gray background.

The viewing angle is limited in a panel containing TN fluid. This means that the text or image display becomes harder to read if you rotate the device away from its center. The display is also not that sharp compared to displays using other technologies.

Another characteristic of this fluid is that it works well even in colder temperatures. It’s because TN fluid has the quickest response time among the other LCD fluid types.

TN fluid is considered the cheapest LCD fluid type. However, this doesn’t mean that TN isn’t widely used. The display technology is greatly utilized in digital clocks, pagers, and gas pumps.

LCD modules with STN fluid enjoy a wider display angle, greater multiplexing, higher image contrast, and sharper response than devices using TN fluids. However, modules with STN fluids may have slower response times when used in lower temperatures due to the fluid freezing inside the device.

STN fluid falls under the moderately cheap LCD module price. Furthermore, STN fluid is widely utilized in several monochrome LCD devices such as POS machines, inexpensive feature phones, and informational screens of some devices.

The CSTN fluid technology takes away the monochrome finish of the typical STN fluid devices. Red, green, and blue filters are added to the fluid module to allow a colored display. New versions of CSTN often feature a viewing angle of 140 degrees and 100ms response times.

CSTN is a bit pricier than TN and STN fluids. But it’s a good choice if you need to display color images on your LCD device. In fact, a lot of color feature phones use CSTN as an alternative to the TFT displays, saving almost half the manufacturing costs.

A device using FSTN fluid has better viewing angles and can produce a sharp black-and-white coloration. It is a good choice for devices that need to display small yet easy-to-read images.

In terms of cost, the LCD display module price of a unit with FSTN is higher compared to TN and STN. But this is concerning the better visual quality that FSTN offers.

To cap off this part, the fluids used in a screen is a big factor in determining the overall LCD screen display panel price. As you can see, the four fluid types often used in LCD screens rise in costs with respect to the visual quality produced by each technology.

The temperature range in which LCD screen displays may work varies intensely. Some displays continue to work at optimal performance even when used in cold or hot outdoor temperatures. Lower-quality LCD panels may start having glitches at the slightest change of temperature and humidity. Hence, the temperature range may have a huge impact on the LCD display panel price as well.

In hot environments– The liquid crystals may begin to deteriorate, while the electrical components will start overheating and cause damage to the display screen performance.

Generally, the LCD module price goes up if the entire display unit can withstand higher temperature ranges. Those who can operate under normal temperature ranges only are usually cheaper.

Hence, you must consider the places where you’ll be installing your LCD display devices. You can’t just use cheaper LCD modules for an industrial-grade display machine. Treat your LCD panel as an investment and select a panel that will yield better screen performance that’ll last several years for you and your business.

It’s an unspoken rule, but monochrome modules are generally cheaper than color-capable ones. However, color-capable display modules may also have cost variations depending on their display capabilities.

Now, when you combine 256 shades of both red, blue, and green subpixels, color LCDs can display a color palette of up to 16.8 million colors. And all these are made possible by millions of transistors etched onto the glass modules.

Display size also plays a large role in an LCD device’s color capability. Smaller screens need fewer pixels and transistors since they have smaller display sizes. These screens are also less costly to make. Now, larger screens with high color resolution and huge display sizes require more transistors and pixels, justifying the higher prices of such monitors.

A touch screen display module is more costly than a non-touch monitor module. Touch capability is integrated into Human Machine Interface (HMI) modules and is generally used in kiosks, bank ATMs, hospital equipment, and similar devices in other industries.

Capacitive touch screens are the most common in the display industry today. This technology uses transparent conductors, insulators, and glass to create the panel. An electrostatic field change in the screen’s module happens when a human finger touches the screen surface. This ultimately creates signals that are sent to the touch screen controller for processing.

We’ve explained the following factors at length for both public consumers and business clients to understand the variations in TFT, LCD, and HMI touch screen prices.

Cheap doesn’t necessarily mean low-quality. Also, expensive options aren’t always a wise choice, either. You can maximize your buying or manufacturing options if you know how to compare LCD modules and panels depending on the specifications you truly need for your display machines and devices.

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)technology is currently dominant in the display world right now due to its lightweight, low power consumption, low manufacturing cost, etc. But LCDs do have several generic drawbacks. A narrow viewing angle is one of the main issues compared with other display technologies, such asOLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), CRT(Cathode-Ray Tube), Plasma, VFD(Vacuum Fluorescent Display), and most recent SamsungMicroLEDdisplays. They also don’t have a response time issue.

LCD scientists and engineers took more than 30 years of effort to improve the TFT LCD viewing angle which has made TFT screens widely applicable in different applications ranging from automotive, home appliances, medical, military, industrial, consumer, etc. The following is a summary of the different TFT wide viewing angle technologies.

When we talk about TFT LCD, we normally mean TN LCD. Thetwisted nematic effect(TN-LCD) takes advantage of the ability of the nematic substance to rotate the polarization of light beams passing through it. Two polarizing filters, parallel planes of glass with their polarizing lines oriented at right angles with respect to each other, are positioned on either side of the liquid crystal. When light enters the display, it is polarized by the input filter. In the absence of an electric field, all the incoming light is transmitted. This is because the light polarization is rotated 90 degrees by the nematic liquid crystal, and the light, therefore, passes easily through the output filter, which is oriented to match the 90-degree shift. With the application of a voltage, an electric field is produced in the nematic liquid crystal. Under these conditions, the polarization effect is reduced. If the voltage is large enough, the polarization effect disappears altogether, and the light is blocked by the output polarizing filter. Refer to Fig.1

In this case, when the display is observed from a vertical direction to the substrate, the display shows a dark state, because the optical axis of the liquid crystal is perpendicular to the substrate. However, when the display is observed from the tilted direction, the display does not show completely a dark state because light leaks due to the birefringence. The birefringence becomes predominant with an increase in the voltage. At different viewing angles, the birefringence is different and the transmission is different in each direction. This is the reason for the poor viewing angle of TFT LCDs. See Fig.3.

O-Film is an optical film that is applied to the TN TFT LCD and redirects light, providing all round viewing angles to any TN TFT LCD to which it is applied. It is easy to apply and relatively low cost.

The best advantage of O Film is to eliminate grayscale inversion. The drawback is to reduce the contrast and brightness. With the wider adoption of IPS, O Film gradually fell out of favor with the market.

The VA (Vertically Aligned) method combines the vertically aligning film and nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. Contrary to the conventional TN method, a very high

Twisted nematic or TN panel, vertically aligned or VA panel, and in-plane switching or IPS panel are three broad types of thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display or TFT LCD that have become very popular screen display technologies used in an array of consumer electronic devices.

Among these three variants, IPS is a more recent LCD technology. Furthermore, the advantages of an IPS panel over a TN panel or a VA panel have made it a more popular LCD option used in modern consumer electronic devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.

Depending on the functional scope of a particular device however, a TN panel or a VA panel can have more advantage over an IPS display. This article compares and contrasts these three LCD technologies using six common display characteristics: color reproduction, viewing angle, contrast ratio, pixel response time, power consumption, and cost and price.

Poor color reproduction is one of the disadvantages of twisted nematic LCD. Therefore, one of the advantages of a VA panel and an IPS panel over a TN panel is color accuracy and better image quality due to better color reproduction.

Most VA and IPS panels have an 8-bit RGB color depth compared with the 6-bit RGB color depth of TN panels. Among the three however, IPS panel has the better color reproduction. Several IPS panel variants have featured 16-bit to 24-bit RGB color depth.

Note that a 6-bit display panel means that the red, green, and blue channels of its single pixel are capable of 64 levels, thus producing 262,144 possible colors. Meanwhile, an 8-bit display has 256 levels in each single pixel, thus producing 16.7 million possible colors.

Strong dependence on viewing angle is another disadvantage of twisted nematic LCD. A user needs to view a TN panel from a straight up 90-degree angle to maximize its visual performance. When viewed from other angles, colors and images on a TN panel will appear duller and darker.

However, a close comparison between a VA panel and a TN panel will reveal that the former has a better viewing angle. But most VA variants suffer from color shifting. This means that uneven brightness levels across a VA screen become noticeable when viewed from a slightly different angle.

Wide viewing angle is an advantage of an IPS panel over TN and VA panels nonetheless. High quality IPS panels produce consistent brightness and contrast levels when viewed from different angles. This is the reason why in-plane switching has become an ideal LCD technology for entertainment devices such as television sets and mid-range to high-end smartphones and tablet computers.

A narrow viewing angle provides some privacy and security however. This can be an advantage of TN panel over an IPS panel. This means that a TN panel can be an ideal LCD option for individuals or organizations that handle sensitive information in the presence of other people.

Higher contrast ratio naturally corresponds to better display panel quality and manufacturers have banked on this to promote the superiority of their product over their competitors. Still, some argues that contrast ratios are all hype because of the absence of testing standards in the industry.

A shorter and better pixel response time is a very notable advantage of TN panel over a VA panel and an IPS panel. Both vertical alignment and in-plane switching LCD technologies inherently suffer from longer pixel response time. However, a comparison between a typical VA panel and a typical IPS panel will reveal that the former has the worse pixel response time.

The response time advantage of TN panel makes it a perfect LCD option for fast-paced gaming and hardcore gamers. Although there are VA and IPS variants that feature reduced pixel response times, these panels are more expensive than TN panels.

TN technology does not require a current to flow during operation. It also uses low operating voltages. These advantages make TN panels popular in low-powered LCDs found in portable and miniscule electronic devices such as digital watches and calculators.

VA panels are more expensive than TN panels. However, they are relatively inexpensive when compared against IPS panels. This is the reason why VA computer monitors and television sets were very popular before the advent of IPS panels.

The aforementioned comparison among TN panel, VA panel, and IPS panel revealed that there is no LCD type that is better at everything. Each type of LCD technologies has its own advantages and disadvantages.

From the list above, TN panels have remained an ideal LCD option used in minuscule electronic devices such as digital watch and calculator because they are very cheap to manufacture and consumes less power. They also remain a popular computer monitor option because of their affordability and fast response time.

On the other hand, IPS panels have the best color reproduction, color accuracy, and wider viewing angle compared with TN and VA panels. These panels have been featured in mid-range and high-end consumer electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablet computers. IPS is also an ideal computer output display for color critical tasks.

VA panels are situated between TN panels and IPS panels. They are more expensive than TN but are relatively cheaper than IPS panels. They offer better color reproduction and more decent viewing angle than TN panels although these characteristics are not superior over IPS panels.
