Anyone who"s ever tried to write a report in a word processor while doing research in a browser, running a spreadsheet, and keeping an eye on e-mail will appreciate a roomier screen. We looked at four of the latest large LCD models from Eizo, NEC-Mitsubishi, and Samsung, all offering terrific-looking displays and good value. Text looks so sharp and crisp that most people will feel no eyestrain at these models" 1280 by 1024 native resolution--although 17-inch LCDs benefit from a larger font size.

The chief strength of NEC-Mitsubishi"s MultiSync LCD1700M ($1499) is its exceptionally wide viewing angle--160 degrees horizontally and vertically--coupled with decent built-in speakers. Samsung"s new $1199 SyncMaster 170T has both an analog interface and a newer DVI digital interface; the latter will become useful as more graphics adapters that support digital video output (which offers superior quality for LCDs) appear. Once the screen sizes exceed 17 inches, prices rise steeply: Some 17-inch monitors are half the price of their 18-inch counterparts. (Blame lower yields for 18-inch screens for this disproportionate price differential.) For example, Eizo"s 18-inch FlexScan L675 screen costs $2900--which is still an improvement over the $3000-plus prices 18-inch LCDs used to command. We were impressed by NEC-Mitsubishi"s 20-inch MultiSync LCD2010X, which goes for $3899--not cheap, but far better than the $8000-plus price tags on comparable-size displays of the last few years. Rhoda Alexander, an analyst with display market research firm Stanford Resources, expects prices to continue falling through the rest of 2001. By year"s end, some 17-inch displays will likely sell for less than $1000, with average prices resting at that mark or slightly higher. But don"t wait beyond then if you"re serious about buying: By early 2002, supply is expected to get tight again, and then prices will stabilize or rise once more.

Plasma is subject to image burn-in, however, much as early CRTs were (remember the days when screen savers were more than a personal statement?), and it does lose brightness over time. Display manufacturers have been hard at work on that problem. Another manufacturer, AU Optronics, made $900-million in the three quarters, according to DisplaySearch, a technology research company.

This windfall has given them the cash to build next-generation plants capable of creating larger screens at lower per-unit costs. Each new generation LCD plant costs $1-billion to $3-billion.

Next year, AU Optronics and another LCD maker, CPT, both based in Taiwan, will complete new plants for making 32- and 37-inch displays. To cut construction costs, Sony and Samsung are in a $2-billion joint venture to build the world"s first LCD plant designed to produce eight 40-inch or six 46-inch displays cut from one large piece of glass.

Bharath Rajagopalan, general manager for TCL-Thomson Electronics, owner of the RCA brand, said: "LCD production is becoming a commodity game. There is an inordinate amount of competition and price erosion."

Ross Young, president of DisplaySearch, predicts there will be a 53 percent increase in capacity during 2005, and he says that will put a lot of pressure on pricing. A 42-inch LCD set that costs close to $4,500 today will be $3,100 next year and $2,250 in 2006, he says.

Tasso Koken, vice president and general merchandise manager for Sears home electronics, predicts that in 18 months, a 20-inch LCD TV from a well-known manufacturer will be less than $299, down from $700 to $800 today. "The 2005 price drops in LCD will make the 2004 reductions look like a walk in the park," he said.

Average consumers do not seem to care which technology they are buying. "Generally speaking, the consumer has no understanding of the differences between LCD and plasma technology," Koken of Sears said.

Many industry executives expect that later this decade, LCD units, which are typically 3 to 5 inches deep, will completely replace smaller-size picture-tube sets. Next year, Sony expects to double the number of flat-panel TVs it sells in the United States, while decreasing its picture-tube offerings by 20 percent, said Mike Fidler, a Sony senior vice president. The picture-tube business is expected to remain profitable for the company for the next three years, but then decline as the price of LCD TVs falls below $500, Fidler said.

Falling prices for larger screen sizes might force plasma sets to be sold only in sizes around 60 inches, where they maintain their price edge over LCD screens. Plasma panels contain only electrodes and phosphors, so they can be made in larger sizes without a proportionate increase in price, according to Ed Wolff, a vice president at Panasonic.

Instead, a line printer was the primary output device, while the monitor was limited to keeping track of the program"s operation.

Multiple technologies have been used for computer monitors. Until the 21st century most used cathode-ray tubes but they have largely been superseded by LCD monitors.

The first computer monitors used cathode-ray tubes (CRTs). Prior to the advent of home computers in the late 1970s, it was common for a video display terminal (VDT) using a CRT to be physically integrated with a keyboard and other components of the workstation in a single large chassis, typically limiting them to emulation of a paper teletypewriter, thus the early epithet of "glass TTY". The display was monochromatic and far less sharp and detailed than on a modern monitor, necessitating the use of relatively large text and severely limiting the amount of information that could be displayed at one time. High-resolution CRT displays were developed for specialized military, industrial and scientific applications but they were far too costly for general use; wider commercial use became possible after the release of a slow, but affordable Tektronix 4010 terminal in 1972.

By the end of the 1980s color progressive scan CRT monitors were widely available and increasingly affordable, while the sharpest prosumer monitors could clearly display high-definition video, against the backdrop of efforts at HDTV standardization from the 1970s to the 1980s failing continuously, leaving consumer SDTVs to stagnate increasingly far behind the capabilities of computer CRT monitors well into the 2000s. There are multiple technologies that have been used to implement liquid-crystal displays (LCD). Pixel density is a measure of how densely packed the pixels on a display are. In LCDs, pixel density is the number of pixels in one linear unit along the display, typically measured in pixels per inch (px/in or ppi).

Contrast ratio is the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the monitor is capable of producing simultaneously. For example, a ratio of 20,000∶1 means that the brightest shade (white) is 20,000 times brighter than its darkest shade (black). Dynamic contrast ratio is measured with the LCD backlight turned off. ANSI contrast is with both black and white simultaneously adjacent onscreen.

Color depth - measured in bits per primary color or bits for all colors. Those with 10bpc (bits per channel) or more can display more shades of color (approximately 1 billion shades) than traditional 8bpc monitors (approximately 16.8 million shades or colors), and can do so more precisely without having to resort to dithering.

Refresh rate is (in CRTs) the number of times in a second that the display is illuminated (the number of times a second a raster scan is completed). In LCDs it is the number of times the image can be changed per second, expressed in hertz (Hz). Determines the maximum number of frames per second (FPS) a monitor is capable of showing. Maximum refresh rate is limited by response time.

Most modern monitors will switch to a power-saving mode if no video-input signal is received. This allows modern operating systems to turn off a monitor after a specified period of inactivity. Yet most people don’t spring to upgrade it until their old monitor is on death’s door. That’s understandable — monitors aren’t as exciting as a new, ray-tracing capable video card or sixteen-core CPU — but, if your monitor is more than five years old, it’s time to give an upgrade some serious thought. You could be missing out on a massive boost in image quality.

And there’s more to it than 4K. The general increase in resolution has slashed the price of monitors with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, which are now widely available starting around $250. This is a great resolution for a 27-inch monitor and ideal if you want to snag other modern features, like a high refresh rate or USB-C (which I’ll explain soon) on a modest budget.

There’s also a whole new category of ultrawide monitors, most of which have 3,440 x 1,440 resolution (which is about equal in sharpness to a widescreen at 2,560 x 1,440). The added display space is perfect for productivity and looks fantastic in modern 3D games.

A typical monitor sold a decade ago would be lucky to cover the entire sRGB color gamut, leaving them with a relatively narrow color space to work with. Today, many monitors handle not just sRGB but also a wide range of DCI-P3 and AdobeRGB. Modern monitors simply display more colors, providing a vibrant and alluring visual presentation.

Colors are more accurate, too, with even budget monitors hitting out-of-box color accuracy scores once possible only in high-end monitors for professional use. There’s also a handful of OLED monitors, most notablythe Alienware AW3423DW. OLED monitors are not as bright as Mini-LED but can achieve an essentially perfect black level and don’t show blooming around objects.

These monitors are expensive, but there’s reason to think pricing will be reduced in the near future. Numerous monitor brands have announced Mini-LED options for mid to late-2022, and several OLED monitors using the same panel found in the Alienware AW3423DW are slated to arrive this year.

Odds are your old LCD monitor has a 60Hz refresh rate. The first G-Sync compatible 144Hz monitors arrived in 2014, but the trend didn’t hit the mainstream until several years later.

Many modern monitors are still 60Hz, of course, but the tax attached to a 144Hz display has become so slim that it’s almost disappeared. Monitors with a 144Hz refresh rate are now sold for as little as $200, with many excellent 1080p options in the $250 to $300 price range. If your budget allows, you can step up to a variety of enhanced refresh rate and resolution options. 4K is available up to 144Hz, 1440p can be enjoyed at up to 240Hz, and some 1080p monitors hit 360Hz.

Adaptive sync is widespread. AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync are now compatible with the VESA Adaptive Sync standard, which has broadened its availability. There’s still caveats here — monitors with an Nvidia G-Sync module do still exist, and both AMD and G-Sync still have several different tiers of adaptive sync support. But, in general, it’s very nearly a standard feature on a wide variety of monitors — even those sold under $200 support it.

And then there’s an upgrade that everyone can appreciate: motion clarity. Pixels on older flat panel LCD screens were rather lazy. Oh, sure, they’d change eventually when asked – but it could take a dozen milliseconds or more. This is why LCD screens show ghosting trails behind objects in motion. The pixels on newer screens are more eager, with the best having black-to-white pixel response times of around a half-dozen milliseconds. That’s a big upgrade.

In summary, motion is just better on modern monitors. A new monitor will look smooth and crisp in situations where an older monitor is hesitant and blurry.

Perhaps it’s no surprise modern monitors look better than old monitors. That’s progress, right? But some new monitors have an upgrade most people don’t think about: the display connection.

USB-C, now common to a variety of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, can also be found on some monitors. It can handle video over DisplayPort Alternate Mode and provide power to a connected device through Power Delivery. A few monitors have a built-in USB-C hub that can extend connectivity to additional devices, add Ethernet, and even handle video-out.

USB-C connectivity remains somewhat uncommon, but entry-level models like the Viewsonic VG2455, Samsung M5, and Dell S2422HZ start around $250. It’s a good time to buy. While the pressure of chip shortages and inflation have heavily influenced most electronics, monitors are somewhat insulated. After a spike in demand for monitors in 2020, interest faded back to normal, leaving most retailers with plenty of stock. This is especially true of mainstream, mass-market monitors sold at affordable prices.

Pay particular attention to the late summer and fall shopping season. Monitors see big discounts during sales as retailers clear out older inventory. Discounts of $100 to $200 are common. Don’t shy away from a deal on last year’s best monitor, either. Monitors have improved over the years, but the gains from year to year are often insignificant.
