The-Skyactiv PHEV has an impressive 241kW / 500Nm, combining the 100 kW motor and the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine. Mazda CX-60 PHEV is the most powerful road-going Mazda to date, with a 0-100km time of 5.9 seconds.
Mazda CX-60 uses a new rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system, supported by Mi-Drive, which helps the driver easily switch between five different driving modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV (PHEV only).
Mazda CX-60 uses Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture. Its body shell rigidity promises driving response while keeping the passengers comfortable. Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) keeps the Mazda stable and comfortable under extreme braking.
The MX60 automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, Active Driving Display and door mirrors to match the driver’s eye position once the driver enters their height using the infotainment settings. The system uses a camera to detect the location of their eyes in order to make the adjustments perfect.
Mazda Australia has today opened the order book and announced full pricing and specs for the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-60 ahead of first local deliveries in June 2023.
Claimed to introduce a new era of ‘Mazda Premium’, which began with the latest Mazda3 in 2019, the new-generation mid-size luxury SUV is the Japanese brand’s first all-hybrid model range and also ushers in its first plug-in hybrid, which is also its most powerful production vehicle to date.
The first vehicle from the car-maker’s new Large Product Group also brings Mazda Australia’s first six-cylinder engines in two decades and the brand’s first-ever inline sixes – 3.3-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines – and is claimed to set a new benchmark in style, quality and performance for Mazda.
But the five-seat CX-60, which was originally due to arrive here this year, will also be Mazda’s most expensive SUV – at least until the bigger new seven-seat CX-90 arrives next year – and the priciest model Mazda has ever sold in Australia apart from the 1995 RX-7 ($89,500) and its super-limited homegrown SP sibling ($101,600).
The 2023 Mazda CX-60 range is priced from $59,800 and extends all the way to $87,252. That doesn’t include on-road costs, a new range of safety and styling option packs priced up to $4000, a new range of car care accessories and luxury car tax (where applicable – see the full price list below).
The pricing positions the CX-60 well above the 195mm-shorter CX-5 ($32,390-$53,880), as well as the seven-seat CX-8 ($40,490-$69,890) and even Mazda’s CX-9 flagship ($47,250-$74,710).
Given the new ground it breaks, at least since the Eunos luxury brand was axed here in 1996 after less than five years on sale, Mazda doesn’t nominate any direct rivals for the CX-60 but concedes competitors could include anything from the Lexus NX (from $60,800-$88,323) to popular mid-size German SUVs like the Audi Q5 (from $66,900) and BMW X3 (from $76,600).
Of the 16,000-plus expressions of interest already received, Mazda says 48 per cent want a high-spec or flagship version and 60 per cent are new to the brand, but it admits that up to 10 per cent of CX-60 sales may be substitutional from other Mazda models.
No sales split was nominated for the PHEV, which costs at least $10,500 more than the diesel, but overall Mazda conservatively expects the CX-60 to find about 500 homes a month or 6000 annually, which is around what the CX-8 and CX-9 achieved in 2021 but about half the volume of the CX-3 and CX-30. It’s also less than a quarter the volume of Mazda’s best-selling CX-5.
Mazda Australia says it won’t import rear-wheel drive or 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol six versions of the CX-60 sold in other markets with less stringent CO2 regulations.
A new Driver Personalisation System employs a facial recognition camera to automatically adjust the driver’s seat, steering wheel, Active Driving Display and door mirrors to match the driver’s eye position, and can restore more than 250 stored vehicle, audio and climate control settings for up to six drivers.
Rhodium White Premium Metallic joins Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Machine Grey Metallic as Mazda’s third signature body colour, in addition to Jet Black Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Sonic Silver Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Platinum Quartz Metallic.
Mazda announced its CX-60 powertrain line-up and equipment highlights in October, but we’ll recap the former here and the extensive equipment breakdown is listed below.
No kerb weights have yet been listed, but that makes Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid the quickest of the bunch with 0-100km/h acceleration in a claimed 5.9 seconds. It also gives the PHEV a zero-emissions EV driving range of 76km at speeds of up to 100km/h, which Mazda says exceeds the average Australian daily commuting distance by almost five times.
Combined fuel consumption is just 2.1L/100km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 49g/km. The centrally-mounted 355-volt, 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged from 0-100 per cent in 2.5 hours using a 7.2kW AC charger, claims Mazda.
Meantime, both the 3.3-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol and diesel engines employ Mazda’s 48-volt M Hybrid Boost tech and the car-maker says their large capacity actually improves efficiency with a higher volume of air and wider lean-burn range enabling more complete combustion and lower NOx emissions.
With the 209kW/450Nm e-Skyactiv G petrol engine, Mazda says that results in fuel consumption close to a non-turbo 2.5-litre engine but it states no actual figure. Performance is well above that of the 2.5-litre turbo Mazda CX-5 (0-100km/h in 6.9sec – 0.8sec quicker).
With the 187kW/550Nm e-Skyactiv D diesel, which Mazda says weighs around the same as a four-cylinder diesel, the result is combined fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km and 0-100km/h in 7.3sec.
The new rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system is also fitted to all versions of the Mazda CX-60. This is supported by Mi-Drive, which helps the driver easily switch between five different driving modes, each to suit a different driving situation: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV (PHEV only).
The First-Ever Mazda CX-60 is now available to order, setting a new benchmark in style, quality and performance for the brand and its Mazda Premium philosophy.
Arriving in June 2023, Mazda CX-60 is the debut vehicle from Mazda’s Large Product Group and introduces three sophisticated new powertrains. All hybridised, this includes inline-six turbocharged petrol and diesel engines and Mazda’s first-ever plug-in hybrid.
Commenting on the new flagship model’s significance, Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “The Mazda CX-60 is more than an exciting new SUV; it’s the evolution of Mazda Premium – a high-quality concentration of design, driving dynamics, technology and comfort developed around our customers and what they want from a mid-sized SUV.”
With a combined 241 kW system output and peak torque of 500Nm from its 100 kW motor and Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre, four-cylinder direct injection petrol, the Mazda CX-60 earns the title as the most powerful road-going Mazda to date. Its 100 km/h sprint time from rest takes just 5.9 seconds.
The six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel both share a 3.3-litre capacity and join the line-up for the first time, with each utilising Mazda’s 48V M Hybrid Boost technology.
In the e-Skyactiv G turbo petrol engine, this results in performance well above that of the Mazda CX-5’s 2.5 litre turbo (0-100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds – a full eight-tenths quicker), but with much better fuel economy – closer to a naturally aspirated 2.5 litre.
Mazda’s right-sizing approach to engine design gives the e-Skyactiv D turbo diesel a similar weight to that of a conventional four-cylinder diesel. It also offers a broad speed range at which lean burn can occur.
All engines in the Mazda CX-60 range are combined with a newly developed Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission. Smooth and responsive, it uses a wider gear range that delivers an optimal balance between driving and environmental performance. The use of a clutch in place of a torque converter means switching between gears is clean and rhythmic. It also enables accurate control of the M Hybrid Boost electric motor in the 48V mild hybrid system (where fitted).
The Mazda CX-60 Evolve model grade blends a mix of genuine practicality and signature Mazda design, offering customers a high-quality feel and driving experience with generous standard appointments.
The range-leading Mazda CX-60 Azami expresses urban tastes with a Japanese monozukuri (craftsmanship) aesthetic in what Mazda calls “Japanese Premium”.
The First-Ever Mazda CX-60 is underpinned by Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which has been designed with a human-centric approach. It incorporates design elements such as focused body shell rigidity for driving response without lag, and controlled stiffness in different components to manage the transmission of forces to the occupant cabin, ensuring premium levels of comfort. It also uses Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) to control the posture of the Mazda CX-60 when braking at speed.
Several of these new technologies debut in the Mazda CX-60. They include See-Through View, which builds on Mazda’s current 360° View Monitor by projecting natural footage of the vehicle’s surroundings, Hill Descent Control (HDC), which makes descending slippery road surfaces such as dirt tracks much safer, i-Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), which can now incorporate speed limits from Traffic Sign Recognition and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Vehicle Exit Warning.
The Driver Personalisation System, another new innovation from Mazda, debuts in the First-Ever Mazda CX-60 and makes it easy for drivers to achieve their ideal driving position and enjoy Mazda’s signature Celebrate Driving experience.
When the driver enters their height via the infotainment centre display, the automatic driving position guide uses a camera to detect the location of their eyes. It then automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, Active Driving Display and door mirrors to match the driver’s eye position.
The system uses facial recognition to remember each driver’s preferences. Once the driver is detected, the Mazda CX-60 automatically restores more than 250 stored settings to match their preferences, including vehicle, audio and climate control settings. The system stores settings for up to six different users, plus guests.
The Driver Entry/Exit Assist function slides the steering wheel and seat out of the way to make it easier for drivers to get into and out of the Mazda CX-60.
Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of ‘less is more’ and created through a further evolution of Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technology, this new colour expresses strength and elegance through a Mazda-unique metallic look.
Alternatively, Mazda CX-60 customers can choose from the following colours: Jet Black Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Sonic Silver Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Platinum Quartz Metallic.

For the better part of last month, yours truly was in the United States. Two things struck me when I was there; first is that everything there is just bigger – the people, food, cars, road, etc. – and secondly, did I mention everything is bigger? It makes a Toyota Corolla feel like a Vios and the Yaris is practically a Kei car over there, which I believe it’s a contributing factor to the Yaris’ discontinuation in the US. Then it clicked, why cars like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are called ‘Co
Hyundai Palisade looks grand with a price that match. Mazda CX-9 is the safer choice for many but it is aged. Which would you choose? Recently, Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) launched its largest SUV, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade, in Malaysia. Though it looks grand up close, many of our readers expressed shock at the equally grand price tag which starts from RM 328,888. The Mazda Motor Corporationis a Japanese multinational automaker based in Fuchū, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. In 2015, Mazda produced 1.5 million vehicles for global sales, the majority of which (nearly 1 million) were produced in the company’s Japanese plants, with the remainder coming from a variety of other plants worldwide. The name Mazda came into existence with the production of the company’s first three-wheeled trucks. Other candidates for a model name included Sumera-Go, Tenshi-Go, and more. Mazda’s Brand Essence is “Celebrate Driving” delivered by Mazda is not just about driving performance. Choosing a Mazda prize the owner with confidence and pride leading up to urge to take on new challenges.
As other car makers grapple with supply chain issues that are pushing vehicle deliveries out by as much as 12 months, Japanese car maker Mazda finds itself in the happy position of having plenty of stock, short lead times and a freshly updated version of its popular CX-5 mid-sized SUV to take to market.
The facelifted CX-5 was launched to the media in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, with Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi telling journalists the model remained one of Mazda’s most globally significant, accounting for more than over 3.5 million sales over the past decade.
Fully 230,000 of these sales have been in Australia, where Mazda enjoys market share above its global average and where the CX-5 was the number one selling SUV for seven consecutive years between 2013 and 2019.
This year, the vehicle that first brought Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language celebrates its 10th anniversary and to mark the occasion Mazda has endowed it with fresh looks, new features and more distinctive model grades.
The SUV segment shows no sign of slowing, according to Mr Bhindi, a fact that has prompted Mazda to push forward with the launch of a new mid-sized model later this year, designed to be complimentary to the CX-5.
The new Mazda CX-60 will boast similar proportions to the CX-5 but with an inline six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive layout, promises to be a more sporting and luxurious product.
Mazda executives are quick to dismiss suggestions the CX-60 will cannibalise sales of up-spec variants of the CX-5, pointing to the success of the complementary CX-3 and CX-30 and the brand’s eight-seat CX-8 and CX-9 models as examples of how adding additional models in the same category can grow overall market share.
But right now, the CX-5 is the brand’s singular torch bearer in the medium-SUV category, this new version “stripping away the clutter and smoothing the surfaces”, in Mazda’s own words, to create a refreshed exterior look, with a bolder face that incorporates new headlights and grille.
Polished design remains a key part of Mazda’s appeal and this latest iteration of the CX-5 introduces a subtle but effective massaging of the proven formula.
Mazda describes the design changes as creating a more unified look, while at the same time more clearly distinguishing between the individual model grades, of which there are 12.
There’s also a new Active Driving Display, a 7-inch TFT display in the gauge cluster, a new Sport and Off-Road Mode Mi-Drive switch on petrol AWD models, a configurable rear cargo area that enables the setting of a flat cargo floor and full LED headlamps and taillamps.
In addition to the design changes already mentioned, the CX-5 Akera is further differentiated from its stablemates by way of smart-looking body colour painted wheel arch and lower body cladding, larger diameter twin exhaust tail pipes and upgraded Adaptive LED Headlamps, plus unique 19-inch alloy wheels finished in bright silver.
This well-appointed model now boasts wireless smartphone charging, a hands-free power tailgate and reversible floorboard setup in the cargo area. That’s in addition to what was an already generous level of standard equipment, including soft Nappa leather trim, ventilated front seats, heated outer seats in the second row, heated leather steering wheel, real wood door and dashboard trim inserts, frameless rear-view mirror and 7-inch TFT LCD multi-information meter display.
Mazda claims to have made numerous improvements to enhance handling, comfort, steering and dynamics, as well as further reducing NVH, but to be frank it’s been a long time between test drives of the CX-5, so we’re not able to comment on the efficacy of these changes.
The six-speed automatic is responsive, refined and goes about its business without fuss, its shift aggressiveness able to be sharpened by selecting Sport mode via the Mi-Drive (Mazda Intelligent DriveSelect) system which also offers Normal, Off-Road, and Towing modes.
Another area where the Mazda trails its Korean rival is in interior presentation and technology, with the CX-5 still using a conventional-looking instrument binnacle with analogue-style speedo and tacho.
There is a small 7-inch TFT display within the gauge cluster, but it stops short of the full digital dash setup found in the rival Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
The addition of premium Nappa leather interior trim may assuage some concerns on this front with Mazda’s design, finish and materials quality as good or better than any of its rivals and the Akera further differentiated with standard features like a Premium Bose audio system with 249-watt amplifier and 10-speakers (including subwoofer).
While the CX-5 is clearly not designed to carve corners like an MX-5 sports car, the Mazda SUV boasts above average-dynamics that enable it to be driven enthusiastically when required.
The changes represent incremental but meaningful improvements to a winning formula and for those buyers wanting something even fresher and more exciting, the new Mazda CX-60 awaits in the wings.
Further expanding Mazda extensive SUV offering, the CX-8 now gains a second powertrain option, more variants, and boosts safety and convenience while retaining its value-for-money proposition with the range starting at less than $40,000.
Petrol power headlines the 2020 update, with the Skyactiv-G 2.5L petrol engine joining the line-up, targeted at customers that undertake more regular urban driving. New Mazda CX-8 also retains its efficient Skyactiv-D 2.2L diesel engine, more suited to regular country driving.
AWD models are equipped with Mazda’s newly developed Off-Road Traction Assist function for rough road driving. This driver support technology brings the AWD and traction control systems together to supress tyre spin and distribute the right amount of torque to the tyres that have grip.
The entire lineup benefits from an advanced version of Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) that adds night time pedestrian protection to enhance New Mazda CX-8’s impressive safety credentials, plus a larger 8-inch central dash display with enlarged icons and text to offers better readability.
