Fingerprint readers are perhaps the most utilitarian addition to phones in the last five years. In the early days, the most popular position for these readers used to be on the front, right below the screen where there were clubbed with the home button.

The simple approach, however, wasn’t tenable with the war against bezels. In fact, we have only now circled back to front fingerprint readers with optical and ultrasonic in-display sensors that are finally snappy and reliable – even on affordable phones.

Yes, the side-mounted fingerprint sensors have existed for years, but there has been a recent surge in their popularity, particularly on affordable phones with IPS LCD panels. Many users actually prefer these to conventional rear-mounted or front in-display sensors.

Side-mounted fingerprint sensors are capacitive sensors, and as all capacitive sensors, they have the advantage of being easily accessible. You can reach out for such sensors without looking at your phone or without holding your phone upright. They are also relatively more consistent.

Another advantage is fingerprint gestures. The tangible nature of these sensors make fingerprint sensor-related gestures like scroll up, scroll down or double-tap action possible.

But side-mounted fingerprint readers have some disadvantages too. Those positioned on the right aren’t as comfortable to access by people who are left-handed – especially on big phones.

Xiaomi Mi 10I (review) retails for a bargain price and has a very impressive spec-sheet that includes 108MP camera, 120Hz refresh rate display, fast charging, and a very capable Snapdragon 750G.

The phone also has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor clubbed with the power button. An option in settings let you decide if you need it to recognize touches after you press the button or when you simply place your finger on the scanner.

Realme X3 Zoom is a capable all-rounder with highlights such as Snapdragon 855+ octa-core chipset, a capable zoom camera, a 120Hz refresh rate display, and 30W fast charging. That’s quite a lot of value for an aggressive under 30K price.

There are two cameras on the front – a 32MP main snapper assisted by an 8MP wide-angle shooter. On the downside, this one skips on an AMOLED panel and has a modest 4200mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy M31s is the only affordable phone with an AMOLED display and a snappy side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The handset flaunts a gorgeous design and is comfortable to wield, even when it houses a massive 6000mAh battery.

On the inside, the Galaxy M31s employs Exynos 9611 octa-core chipset which limits it as a phone for basic and moderate users. Other highlights include USB Type-C port, HD content streaming support on apps like Netflix and Prime, and 25W fast charging.

The Poco X3 (review) replaces Poco X2 as a budget champ that offers 120Hz refresh-rate IPS LCD screen and is powered by Snapdragon 732G octa-core chipset.

Partially severing ties with Xiaomi allows Poco to deliver a relatively ad-free version of MIUI. This one has 33W fast charging support to go with the beefy 6000mAh battery. The camera performance is also quite decent for the price.

Poco M2 Pro brings amazing value to phones priced under Rs. 15,000. It offers dependable performance hardware and a slightly better version of MIUI 11. The cameras are quite decent for the price, and yes, it has a very reliable side-mounted fingerprint reader that’s positioned just right.

Realme 7 is powered by the game-centric Helio G95 octa-core chipset, has a 90Hz IPS LCD display, a slick design, and a very reliable side fingerprint sensor.

This is a powerful phone that covers all basics and should be an appealing option for people restricted by a 15K budget. The Pro variant, Realme 7 Pro, starts at INR 19,999 and offers an AMOLED display and a snappy in-display fingerprint reader.

Realme’s 6-series phones opt for high refresh-rate screens over AMOLED panels. Both of these are big phones with side-mounted fingerprint sensors and punch-holes to accommodate selfie cameras.

The Realme 6 Pro (review) is powered by Snapdragon 720G octa-core chipset and the Realme 6 (review) gets MediaTek’s Helio G90T. Both of these phones are powerful performers, offer 30W fast charging, and have 64MP sensor led quad-cameras on the rear.

Xiaomi’s Note9 Pro and Note9 Pro are sizeable phones with side-mounted fingerprint readers. These phones are powered by Snapdragon 720G octa-core chipset that integrates NavIC support, have centrally aligned circular notches, and run Android 10-based MIUI 11 software.

There are 4 cameras on the rear. The Note 9 Pro gets the 48MP Samsung GM2 as the primary sensor, while the Note 9 Pro Max has the 64MP GM1. The Pro and Pro Max also differ in terms of RAM and Storage configurations and fast charging speeds.

Samsung Galaxy S10e (quick review) is still a relevant option for consumers who need compact phones. It’s still a bit pricy for a bottom-tier, yesteryear flagship, but I guess recurring sales should offer opportune buy moments.

The Galaxy S10e is a cute, premium phone with a very accessible side-mounted fingerprint sensor that’s more reliable and convenient than what Samsung offers even on current S20-flagships. The phone has a 5.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen, and is powered by Exynos 9820 octa-core processor. The 3100mAh battery and the resulting backup is on the lower side, and that’s the main compromise you’d have to live with.

Huawei Y9s is an affordable phone powered by Kirin 710F chipset paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The catch is that due to the US imposed sanctions, the Huawei Y9s is still running Android 9 Pie as the base software.

There are three cameras on the back, led by a 48MP sensor. The front camera resides in a pop-up slider and thus the 6.59-inch TFT LCD display is uninterrupted and quite immersive.

Side-mounted sensors on modern phones are always-on type. This is to say that you won’t have to first press the power button-cum-FP reader before scanning begins. I guess these do help manufacturers using IPS LCD panels differentiate their phones and we expect to see many more phones with the side-mounted sensors as the year proceeds.

Apple was the first to come with fingerprint sensor technology on its smartphones followed by Samsung that introduced it with the Galaxy S5. Fingerprint scanners are now a standard offering among most smartphones, including the budget ones. A fingerprint sensor is a form of biometric authentication that offers a secure and reliable solution to unlock a smartphone in the fastest and efficient way. Samsung smartphones usually have fingerprint sensors integrated with the physical home button on the front, thus making accessibility easier. Samsung Galaxy S8 features the fingerprint sensor on the rear though, next to the camera module. In addition to enabling the fingerprint sensor lock, one needs to add a PIN or password that serves as an alternative method for unlocking. Below is the price list of 233 Samsung mobile phones with a fingerprint sensor that offers high accuracy and faster response time and the list is last updated on 20th February 2023. Moreover, devices supporting Samsung Pay such as Galaxy A7, J7 Pro, S7 and S8 allow users to authorise mobile payments by simply scanning their fingerprint.

Fingerprint sensors will still be the first choice for most Andriod phones in 2018, since other biometric authentication methods available for Andriod phone makers cannot completely replace fingerprint identification yet, says TrendForce. Meanwhile, in-display fingerprint sensors are expected to make breakthrough this year, and vendors like Samsung, LG, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei are likely to embed this technology, bringing the global fingerprint sensor penetration rate in smartphones to 60%.

Apple acquired Authentic in 2013 and have embedded fingerprint scanning in iPhones and iPads since then. In the past years, Android camp has also adopted fingerprint scanning to unlock phone and make mobile payment. However, as full-screen becomes the trend and Apple replaces Touch ID with Face ID in 2017, Android camp has to adjust their strategies, says TrendForce.

The mainstream fingerprint recognition solutions are based on capacitive sensing technology. On other hand, designs of smartphone displays are shifting towards higher screen-to-body ratio and full frontal screen. Phone makers recognize that there is insufficient space for the front side of the smartphone for a standard capacitive fingerprint sensor, and thus put their focus of development on in-display fingerprint sensor in recent years. At the end of 2016, Synaptics released UnderGlass, an optical solution of fingerprint sensing, which overcomes the limitation that capacitive solutions cannot sense through the glass panel of phones. Recently, Synaptics also released new in-display fingerprint sensing solutions for AMOLED panels. After more than a year of development, Synaptics’ optical solutions of in-display fingerprint sensing have chance to enter mass production due to the increasing yield rate of Synaptics and other related companies.

Capacitive fingerprint sensing chips and TDDI chips used to be the key product lines of Synaptics from 2016 to 2017. But as the competition becomes intense, Synaptics has started to actively develop in-display fingerprint sensing technology. Its competitor Goodix, for instance, has recently sent sample products to major mobile phone vendors for testing; Qualcomm has cooperated with Vivo in developing ultrasonic fingerprint sensing in 2017; FPC, the Swedish biometric authentication solutions provider, also released its ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology at the end of 2017. The active engagements of these companies indicate that in-display fingerprint sensing will bring about a new trend for smart phones.

In addition to Korean brands Samsung and LGE which make AMOLED panels by their own, Chinese smartphone brands such as OPPO, Vivo, Meizu, Gionee, Xiaomi and Huawei will also have chance to embed in-display fingerprint sensor for AMOLED panel in their new models to release in 2018. However, Samsung still dominates global production capacity of AMOLED panels, which will limit the scale of Android camp’s adoption of in-display fingerprint sensing in their flagship models. As the result, a large number of middle and low end smartphones will continues to use traditional capacitive fingerprint sensing that has costs less. TrendForce estimates that global smartphone shipments for this year will total around 1.53 billion units, in which the penetration rate of fingerprint recognition technologies will reach 60%, an increase of five percentage points up from 55% of 2017.

Phones with in-display fingerprint sensors first appeared at the beginning of 2018, and the technology was somewhat unpolished then. We’ve seen in-display sensors grow in popularity since then and become much more common. There are loads of phones with the technology nowadays, so we thought it would be a good idea to find the best phones with in-display fingerprint scanners and list them up to save you all the hard work.

Google’s own flagship devices come with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are also some of the best Android phones you can currently find. Not only because of their unique and high-quality designs, which they inherited from the Pixel 6 series. Also because they come with specs that compete with some of the best in the market. The phones offer a high-end experience, all while keeping prices very reasonable.

Being part of Google’s Pixel lineup, you’re ensured timely updates. Aside from that, the Pixel 7 comes with a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The larger Pixel 7 Pro features a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a QHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Both feature a powerful Google Tensor G2 chipset. And they come with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM, depending on which phone you get.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal than the Google Pixel 7 series, especially if you want an in-display fingerprint scanner. If you want to save some cash, though, consider the Pixel 6a. It offers a bit less than the Pixel 7 but also costs less. It’s powered by the same chipset as the Pixel 6 series, which is still plenty powerful.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is all but guaranteed to offer some of the hottest devices of the year, and these are luckily among the best phones with in-display fingerprint scanners, too. Of course, the fingerprint reader is hardly the most exciting feature in this trio of high-end flagships.

All three devices come with a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and ample amounts of RAM. The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus versions offer 8GB of RAM, while the Ultra iteration takes things up to 12GB. You’ll also get a gorgeous Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a 120Hz refresh rate, albeit at different sizes, depending on the device you pick. Battery capacity ranges between 3,700mAh and 5,000mAh. Furthermore, all devices come with a capable camera system. Of course, you’ll also get a clean and premium design.

We recommend the latest OnePlus 10 Pro if you want a phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner. It packs plenty of other excellent flagship features, too, even if there are a few sidesteps that seem to be ways to keep the cost down.

The OnePlus 10 Pro offers plenty of power with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a great 120Hz display, a beautiful design, solid build quality, and impressive battery life. Even better, it still offers speedy 50W wireless charging straight out of the box. You still won’t find an IP68 rating on the unlocked OnePlus 10 Pro, but the T-Mobile version has one, suggesting that both models are waterproof.

OnePlus’ latest version of fast charging lets you fully charge its large battery at 80W wired speeds internationally or 65W speeds in the US. For worldwide markets, that means a full charge in just 32 minutes, while the US iteration can jump to 58% after just 15 minutes of charging. It’s particularly impressive once you consider that we’re talking about a 5,000mAh cell. Hasselblad is once again at the helm of OnePlus’ camera technology. The ultrawide lens is even wider than before, and the 48MP primary lens can capture plenty of detail.

Aside from having an in-display fingerprint scanner, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is a very unique phone. It comes with all the bells and whistles you can expect from a high-end 2022 phone, like a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, 8-12GB of RAM, a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, and a healthy 4,860mAh battery.

Likely what makes the phone stand out more is housed in its huge camera housing. As you can expect, it’s so large because it’s housing smoothing big. This is one of the few smartphone cameras to feature a one-inch camera sensor with a 50.3MP resolution. The other 48MP cameras are much more traditional at half an inch.

The ASUS ROG Phone lineup has provided some of the best gaming phones year after year, and the company isn’t stopping any time soon. The ASUS ROG Phone 6D UIltimate is as stunning as its name entails.

This handset comes with all the optimizations you can ask for in a gaming device. The screen is large at 6.78 inches, and it comes with a 165Hz refresh rate and 1,200 nits of brightness. The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ is plenty powerful to handle any game, and its 16GB of RAM is nothing to scoff at. All that power will also drain your battery fast, which is why this device comes with a sizeable 6,000mAh battery.

Other fancy features include an integrated air vent, a secondary two-inch screen in the back, and, of course, it also comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Samsung’s affordable 5G smartphones pack more punch than ever, especially with the launch of the Galaxy A53. It may not look too different from its predecessor, the A52 5G, but there’s not much more you could ask for in a $450 phone.

Samsung kept high refresh rates on its mid-ranger, with the A53 rocking a Super AMOLED screen and a 120Hz refresh rate. Another helpful upgrade is the camera setup, headlined by an impressive 64MP shooter. You get dual-SIM capabilities, with the second slot doubling as a microSD card slot, but the headphone jack is no more. The 5,000mAh battery also comfortably lasts through an entire day and beyond. Once you drain the battery, you can tap into 25W fast charging to get back on the go.

The in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy A53 is much more precise as well as faster than the one on its predecessor, so you’ll be able to unlock the device without an issue.

The vivo X90 series features one of the best in-display fingerprint readers in the industry. It’s actually the same sensor we saw in the vivo X80 Pro, which is very responsive and has 11 times the area compared to most competitors.

What makes these devices special goes far beyond the fingerprint reader, though. The design is gorgeous and unique, featuring a faux leather back. You may have also noticed the colossal camera housing, which houses among the best camera systems in the market, at least in the case of the X90 Pro Plus.

Specs are also nothing short of premium. You’ll get the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor on the base and Pro versions, while the X90 Pro Plus sticks with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. RAM options range between 8GB and 12GB. Storage tops off at 512GB.

The Find X3 Pro offered a great design, and the newer OPPO Find X5 Pro takes a functional equation and improves upon it. It looks gorgeous, featuring a ceramic back that’s said to be twice stronger than glass. While there’s a camera bump, it blends in better than in most other handsets. Of course, there’s also a fast in-display fingerprint scanner on board.

Specs are nothing to scoff at, offering a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 8/12GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery. It also sports a gorgeous 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s IP68-rated, and the triple-camera setup is outstanding.

The phone comes with stereo speakers, which are boosted by Dolby’s Atmos technology. There’s a reasonable balance between the top and bottom speakers that’s better than most, and the sound can easily fill up a room. It’s a great phone all around.

Are you still not convinced by these devices? Maybe you shouldn’t be too picky and settle without an in-display fingerprint reader. Consider other options in our lists of the best Android phones, as well as the best budget devices available.

This morning, Nothing premiered a video on YouTube offering some behind-the-scenes looks at the creation of the company and the development of the Nothing Phone (1). In the following video, we get a look at the assembly line, design and development of the Glyph and its sounds, and we sit in a meeting with Qualcomm.

At the 4:18 mark, the display panel clearly shows an outline of an in-display fingerprint scanner. If that wasn’t evidence enough, Nothing’s TikTok channel showed the in-display fingerprint in action.

The Nothing Phone (1) is a mid-range smartphone from the company behind Carl Pei, one of the co-founders of OnePlus. It is powered by the Snapdragon 778G+ and features a 6.55-inch OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate. It also features a unique “Glyph” array of LED lamps that can flash for different notifications or they can be customized for different functions.

Nothing will release the phone in Europe, UK, Middle east, Asia, and Australia. The phone is rumored to cost around €470 and won’t be coming to North America. Pre-orders for the Nothing Phone (1) are now open, and the device will commercially launch next week on July 12.
