A compact yet powerful shooting tool, the Hero 10 Black packs impressive HyperSmooth stabilization skills, which can be used across most of its shooting modes. It can also slow-mo your action-packed moments in 4K at 120fps. Plus it’s waterproof and responsive.

The downsides are the fact that it doesn"t offer the best 2D video quality (due to the need to convert it from a fish-eye image, and the max 1440/60p resolution) and that it can"t quite match the Hero 8 Black or Hero 9 Black in low light situations. But it remains the best waterproof, 360-degree action camera around.

Unlike the original Osmo Pocket, the Pocket 2 has a larger 1/1.7-inch sensor that can shoot 64MP stills and 4K/60p video at 100Mbps. Boasting 4K 60fps video and up to 20 megapixel stills, it appears to match its much pricier rivals both on resolution and by having a natively waterproof chassis. It’s loaded with accessories and easy to use yet it lacks some crucially important characteristics that flagship action cameras alone offer.

Widely recognised by many as the gold standard of action cameras, GoPro has been setting the bar since its launch in 2004. The GoPro HERO 9 Black featured here offers the highest video resolution – 5K ultra HD – of any camera in our review. The camera comes equipped with a touch rear screen and a front LCD screen.

Unlike many other action cameras we’ve seen, the DJI Osmo Action is only waterproof to 10 metres. But what it does have in common with many other higher-end action cams is two screens – a touch screen on the back and a front screen that is great for selfies. To ensure its movies have that larger-than-life look, the DJI Osmo Action shoots in 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) format.

The Crosstour CT9300 action cam is an Amazon Choice product. Priced in the mid-range bracket, it’s waterproof and offers a number of cool features; time lapse, anti-shake, loop recording and built-in lens distortion correction to iron out the fisheye effect of the super wide angle lens, to name but a few.

As another Amazon Choice action camera, the AKASO EK7000 Pro has a huge spec and promises to deliver ultra high definition 4K videos and outstanding 16 mega pixel still images. Equipped with a 2-inch screen/user interface and a lens featuring narrow, medium, wide or super wide view angles, the EK70000 is waterproof to 40 metres, which should be plenty deep enough for most users.

If a fully functioning, ultra high definition 4K, waterproof sports camera for under £35 sounds too good to be true, it may well be. But that’s what’s on offer on eBay, with multiple sellers promoting not just the Campark or similar cameras but also a full kit of accessories to go with it.

And with 4K ultra high definition 3840 x 1080P video, a wide angle 170-degree lens and built-in WiFi, the spec of its action cam is pretty impressive too. Waterproof to 30 metres with its included housing, the camera doubles up as a webcam when not in use elsewhere.

Another product from the bargain basement is this sports action camera, which is actually billed as a motorcycle helmet cam. But given it’s waterproof and vibration resistant too, there’s nothing to say it can’t be used to good effect by sailors and motor boaters as well.

Accessories: Body mounts, helmet mounts, remote controllers, waterproof casings; the list goes on. And on and on. To avoid disappointment, shortlist the cameras you like and compare their accessories before buying.

Elsewhere, the GoPro HERO 9 Black appears similar to the HERO 8, with the bunny-ears mount present, along with caseless waterproofing to 10m. Look closer, though, and the improvements are many and varied (check out our GoPro HERO 8 Black vs HERO 9 Black showdown for a direct comparison). Under the hood, there"s a bigger sensor (23.6MP), which means this cam can now shoot 5K/30 video and 20MP stills, and a very welcome 30% battery boost. Incredibly impressive horizon levelling now comes baked in, although you won"t be able to tilt the camera quite as much as you can with the HERO 10 Black. Hindsight and Scheduled Capture tools add new opportunities to get creative, and Hypersmooth and Timewarp features – upgraded over the HERO 8 but not quite as good as in the HERO 10 – remain excellent.

Despite being the lowest-specced GoPro you can easily get hold of, the GoPro HERO 7 Black is still a very capable action cam. The H7 brought with it stabilisation at 4K60, and while it"s not as impressive as newer Hypersmooth versions, it"s still good enough that you don"t need a gimbal. This rugged action camera is waterproof down to 10 metres on its own, you can expand that to an impressive 30 metres with an optional GoPro waterproof housing. The H7 was the last HERO not to sport that frameless design – no bunny ears here – but it"ll still work with the wide range of mounts and extras in the GoPro ecosystem if you add a case first.

Waterproof and with new modes for vlogging and for instant panoramic photos, the pocket-sized camera is processing-intensive, with editing on a phone a battery-hungry exercise, but here’s a 360º camera that will exceed the expectations of anyone trying to do something new and expansive-looking without the need for drones and a camera crew.

The best action cameras also come bundled with accessories and a versatile system of mounts – or least have the option to buy the ones you want. Waterproofing without a case comes as standard with some models, but with others you"ll probably want to invest in waterproof casing to safeguard your cam for everything from watersports to an unexpected downpour.
