Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. The backlight is synchronized with the display so that the colors will show up as needed. The list of LCD manufacturers:

Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. OLED panels can also take the shape of a light panel, where red, green and blue light emitting materials are stacked to create a white light panel. OLED displays can also be made transparent and/or flexible and these transparent panels are available on the market and are widely used in smartphones with under-display optical fingerprint sensors. LCD and OLED displays are available in different shapes, the most prominent of which is a circular display, which is used in smartwatches. The list of OLED display manufacturers:

MicroLED displays is an emerging flat-panel display technology consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. Like OLED, microLED offers infinite contrast ratio, but unlike OLED, microLED is immune to screen burn-in, and consumes less power while having higher light output, as it uses LEDs instead of organic electroluminescent materials, The list of MicroLED display manufacturers:

LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. A larger substrate allows for more panels to be cut from a single substrate, or for larger panels to be made, akin to increasing wafer sizes in the semiconductor industry.

IPS Alpha Technology, Ltd. ("IPS Alpha" / President and Director: Mr. Fumiaki Yonai) today announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art IPS panel plant in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. As a new manufacturing base for LCD TV panels, the new facility will further expand the company"s output of IPS α Panels, which have won worldwide acclaim.

Plans call for construction of the new plant to begin in August 2008, with production of 8.0-generation substrates expected to commence in January 2010. Full production capacity will be approximately 15 million units per year based on 32-inch panel basis. Estimated to cost a total of approximately ¥300 billion, the new plant will result in an even more efficient production system for LCD TV panels. Production capacity of IPS α panels is estimated to be 21 million units per year (based on 32-inch panels) in 2013, a significant increase from 6 million units per year (planned) in September 2008.

In recent times, the move to digital broadcasting, the launch of blu-ray discs and other developments have driven the digitization of packaged media and higher picture quality worldwide. In particular, Japan, the U.S. and Europe will soon switch over completely to digital broadcasting, and in these markets there is growing demand for flat-panel TVs as households replace their main TVs and even their second and third sets. Further expansion in demand is expected also in emerging markets such as BRICs and Vietnam, where digital broadcasting infrastructure is going to be established.

Framed against this market backdrop, 30-inch class flat-panel TVs, which IPS Alpha focuses on, are at the center of this replacement demand for second TVs, and of the TVs for the use in living rooms in Japan. There will be an increasing demand for IPS α Panels, which boast the high picture quality and outstanding wider viewing angles that are suitable for digital broadcasts, as well as the world"s best class low power consumption.

In the future, IPS Alpha will also examine the development of organic electro luminescence display ("OELD") and the production of 40-inch class panels to respond to diversifying consumer needs.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology is a TFT liquid crystal technology that was put to practical use by Hitachi in 1996. With IPS, liquid crystal molecules rotate in a plane parallel to the TFT substrate when an electric field is applied horizontally. This results in superior performance in terms of viewing angles and better response speeds for color purity and half tones. IPS stands for In-Plane-Switching mode system which utilizes horizontally oriented liquid crystal molecules. IPS mode system can provide wider viewing angles in principle and provide vivid and high quality picture regardless of the viewing angle. In particular, IPS-Pro* technology newly developed for TVs boasts high picture quality and the lowest power consumption in industry with 1.8 times of permeability and 4.5 times of contrast ratio compared with the IPS mode system in early stage. IPS Alpha calls the panels produced with this technology "IPS α Panel" and provides them all over the world.

Hitachi, Toshiba and Matsushita Electric have formed a joint venture to manufacture large liquid-crystal displays for flat-screen televisions, escalating competition for a piece of the digital living room.

The three Japanese giants said Tuesday that they will pour $1 billion into the new company, which has yet to be named. The companies plan to build a manufacturing facility in Mobara, Japan, on a site owned by Hitachi Displays, an LCD unit of Hitachi.

The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2006, and will churn out 2.5 million 32-inch panels a year in 2008, according to the companies. The factory will cut panels from so-called sixth-generation "motherglass," which will measure at least 59 inches by 70.9 inches.

The companies said they also plan to manufacture an Advanced Super-IPS (In-Plane-Switching) LCD panel, which is believed to produce better image quality.

In a joint statement, the companies said they expect that demand for large flat-panel televisions will keep growing rapidly, from about 3 million units in 2003 to nearly 15 million in 2009.

More and more, consumer electronics companies have been teaming up to invest in manufacturing plants as they seek a steady stream of supply for their TV businesses. The ebb and flow of panel production often leaves companies competing in the open market for screens, which has historically made the industry highly volatile when it comes to price. This often can unpredictably affect revenue for the companies.

Instead of building expensive plants, often costing billions of dollars, companies have been forming joint ventures that spread the cost and risks. So far, it looks like the risk is worth the reward for consumer electronics companies, as the popularity of LCD televisions grows.

Meanwhile, Sharp, the current top seller of LCD televisions in the Japanese market, built its flagship facility in Kameyama in western Japan last year. It has already started shipping products built in that plant.

Matsushita--better known for its Panasonic brand--and Toshiba said in a press conference that they will continue to purchase LCD panels from Sharp, even after the newly formed venture begins production.

On the other end of the large flat-panel TV spectrum, Matsushita earlier this year said it plans to build a plasma display panel (PDP) plant in Amagasaki, Japan, that will produce 4.5 million 42-inch units a year.

TOKYO, Aug 06, 2004 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Toshiba Corp. are considering jointly manufacturing large liquid crystal display panels for flat-screen TVs, company sources said Friday.

With a combined investment of 100-200 billion yen, the three are studying setting up a joint venture and building a new LCD facility at the site of Hitachi Displays Ltd."s factory in Mobara, Chiba Prefecture, the sources said.

The three want to soften the burden of the mammoth capital outlay for LCD production with the partnership, while securing a stable supply source of LCDs, they said. Demand for such panels is on the rise due to the popularity of flat-panel TVs.

Hitachi now makes 32-inch LCD panels for flat-panel TVs on the basis of its fifth-generation LCD panel technology, according to the Friday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

Hitachi and Matsushita are considering using the sixth-generation technology for manufacturing multiple 30-inch LCD panels for flat-panel TVs from a single glass substrate to cut costs, possibly from 2006, it said.

The sixth-generation technology involves manufacturing multiple 30-inch LCD panels from a single substrate measuring more than 1.5 meters in both width and length.

Hitachi began producing 32-inch LCD panels in 2003. With rival manufacturers launching factories able to handle larger substrates, Hitachi fears its cost competitiveness may decline, according to the paper.

In the field of LCD panel production, South Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers became the world"s forerunners on the strength of their mammoth investments.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co will buy a majority stake in a Hitachi Ltd display unit for about $1.2 billion, making it the world’s top ranked maker of small and medium sized LCDs, the Nikkei newspaper said on Monday.

The venture, Hitachi Displays Ltd, will use the funds to build a factory in Japan that will supply Hon Hai, one of the biggest manufacturers of Apple Inc’s iPhone and iPad, the newspaper said.

Combined with its recent acquisition of Taiwanese LCD panel maker Chimei Innolux Corp, Hon Hai, which is owned by electronics giant Foxconn, would become the world’s top maker of smaller liquid crystal display panels with market share of 17.3 percent, outstripping Sharp Corp according to 2009 data.

But Sharp is also considering expanding its small LCD production capacity, sources told Reuters this month. And Japanese local officials said last week Toshiba Corp was set to build a new LCD factory for 100 billion yen, which media reports say will supply Apple.

Goldman Sachs analyst Ikuo Matsuhashi welcomed the Nikkei report as a sign Hitachi was continuing efforts to streamline its sprawling business, after Canon, which owns 25 percent in Hitachi Displays, said in September it had dropped a plan to take control.

The Nikkei said Hitachi’s stake in the venture will drop to about 30 percent from the current 75.1 percent, adding that the new plant would begin operating in 2012 and that it would more than double the annual capacity of Hitachi Displays.

Shares in Hitachi were up 0.3 percent at 409 yen in Monday morning trading, weaker than a 0.6 percent rise for the broader Nikkei stock average. Shares in Hon Hai were down 0.4 percent at T$116.50.

“Hitachi is constantly considering measures to strengthen its operations but will not comment on individual plans under consideration,” said company spokesman Atsushi Konno.
