After my much loved Sony RX100 died (my fault) I started carrying my larger, heavier SLR, until I purchased a new compact camera.  Earlier this year I found myself in the situation where I was out on a hike and it started to rain just enough that I had to put my camera away and with that my opportunity for photos disappeared. Given that on a multi-week hike I average around 800 photos/week this forced me to seek out a camera that was going to cope with whatever the elements threw at me and after much research I ended up purchasing the Olympus TG-5 Waterproof Tough Camera. I’ve been using this compact camera for just on seven months now so how does it perform?

In the case of the Olympus TG-5 Waterproof Tough Camera there isn’t a lot wrong but there are a few bug bears with the main negative being the relatively small sensor. My now deceased Sony RX100 had a 1″ sensor and the image quality on the TG5 with its 1/2.33 inch sensor is just not as good. For most people this won’t be an issue but if you do want to reproduce large high quality printed images then the TG5 is not going to suit you.

We Don"t LikeLack of viewfinder. The main visual access point of this camera is the rear LCD screen and while this is OK in low light, on bright sunny days it is hard to see exactly what you are shooting and what the outcome is without finding a shady spot to review the image

The Olympus Tough TG-5 is no DSLR-killer. Instead, this is a camera aimed at outdoor types frustrated by the poor quality of photos and videos from action cameras. Don"t expect the finest low-light photos ever, but a fast 25-100mm lens with a maximum aperture f/2.0 (unusual for a waterproof compact) and 20fps burst shooting puts it leagues ahead of action cameras if stills photography is your main concern and, crucially, ahead of other "rugged" cameras.

However, most people will buy the TG-5 for it"s tough stuff, and rightly so. The TG-5 can go down to depths of 15m underwater, while adding an optional diving case and it can go down to 45m. However, don"t mistake it for being merely an underwater camera; being waterproof is also useful for hikers, bikers, kayakers, and skiers.

However, this clever compact offers a something more than its waterproof, drop-proof, freeze-proof and crushproof design suggests. If you’re the kind of person who always used take your DSLR on trips, but now begrudgingly rely on your phone’s photos, the TG-5 is also aimed at you. We say that because of its capability with raw files, which let you post-process to your heart’s content once you’re returned from a trip. That’s not something you can do reliably with a smartphone or most compact cameras and action cameras, and it means only one thing; better photographs.

The TG-5 is all about its tough credentials. Being waterproof to 15m makes it good for snorkelling and shallow dives, while being crushproof to 100kg means you can take it skiing and keep it in your salopettes without having to worry if you fall on it when you white-out. Having experienced the dreaded ‘frozen phone’ at 0°C while on the mountainside, skiers and hikers will most easily appreciate the TG-5’s ability to work down to -10°C. Meanwhile, being drop-proof from 2.1m will surely suit all users.

Just bear in mind that even with the TG-5 set to record in super-fine JPEG and RAW, the compressed JPEG that flashes-up as a preview on the LCD screen doesn’t bear much resemblance to what you’ve just captured. In that way, using the TG-5 is more like using a DSLR than a compact camera.

At just 207g it’s much smaller than the TG-5, but there’s a lot less quality on offer. Not only does it not shoot in raw or produce 4K video, but images are soft and the battery life is short. If you're on a budget though and want a waterproof camera, this is the one to go for.

Housing. Should you wish to extend your depth range, there is an underwater housing also made by Olympus. All the camera’s functions are accessible, and this case is waterproof depth rated to 45m (150ft). There is a fibre-optic connector to connect an external flash, such as the UFL-3. This is in effect operated as a slave flash by the firing of the camera’s internal flash when taking a photograph. The housing is also neutrally buoyant underwater.

Although you cannot use this flash diffuser with the fisheye converter, this wide-angle lens can be connected whilst underwater or removed at your whim, fitting the flash diffuser as usual, to greatly expand your versatility underwater. This fisheye lens allows for full wide-angle shooting, without sacrificing the brightness of the TG-5’s F:2 lens. The angle of coverage is 130-degrees and has an extended focal length of 19mm.

There are two waterproofed compartments. One underneath the camera, which holds the battery and memory SD card; the other is on the left-hand side, protecting the charging ports (USB & HDMI). Both have a double-lock mechanism, so please make sure that there are no hairs or dust anywhere near the silicone gasket before closing the camera.

These days, the rugged, waterproof segment of the camera market is one of the few areas in which there"s a good reason for buying a standalone compact camera. Over the last decade since Apple wowed us with its first iPhone, followed in short order by Google"s Android, smartphones have demolished the rest of the compact market. But despite their clear strengths in portability, connectivity and performance, many smartphones aren"t waterproof and even fewer are ruggedized. And even if it"s built like a tank, you probably don"t want to risk such an expensive device -- and one which touches on so many areas of your life -- as your smartphone.

But while the "take it anywhere" advantage of a compact ruggedized, waterproof camera over a smartphone is obvious, there hasn"t been such a clear box ticked in the image quality department. Thanks to some big improvements made in smartphone cameras over the last few years coupled with the stagnation of the compact camera market right as it reached the peak of its ill-advised lust for the mighty megapixel, smartphones and compacts have been much of a muchness in terms of the end results.

With the TOUGH TG-5, Olympus aims to change all of that by taking the rugged, waterproof camera upmarket. In the process, it"s had to bump the price up a little, but at US$450 or thereabouts, the TG-5 is still quite reasonable and certainly more affordable than all but the most basic of unlocked smartphones. And it promises a big step forwards in image quality thanks to the pairing of three important bits of kit.

And just like that of the earlier TG-4, it"s impressively solid, said to be able to withstand 220 pounds (100 kg) of crushing force, is waterproof to 50 feet (15 m), and capable of surviving a drop from seven feet (2.1 m) onto an unspecified surface. It"s also dustproof and freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C), and now sports a dual-pane cover glass over the lens to help avoid it fogging up when the temperature suddenly changes.

The Olympus TG-5 performs as expected in the print quality department given the relatively small sensor. A very good 13 x 19 inch print can be attained while shooting at base ISO, and this is a nice feat in general for a rugged waterproof camera. And yet if you intend to print 8 x 10"s you will for sure want to remain at ISO 400 and below, as anything higher will simply not yield good results while printing at 8 x 10 inches. Given the larger pixels courtesy of the move back to 12 megapixels from 16MP in the TG-4, we"d hoped for better high ISO performance as compared to the predecessor, but the sensor size really limits the performance potential above ISO 400, regardless of the slight increase in pixel size.

With an overseas photography trek looming later this year, I cast about for a lightweight waterproof camera to carry on a strenuous climb into the mountains of Taiwan at altitudes exceeding 2,500m.
