I have bought a Chinese LCD projector from eBay, of course as many say, why do you buy crap like that? Eeuh well i like buying crap and try to make something out of it.. In this case it was a DBpower LED 86+ (wifi) . I believe it is produced under several names , has a native 1280*768 resolution. A friend of mine was enjoying his Chinese UC40 projector, but for some strange reason, the manufacturer figured that it would be a nice feature to watermark the projected image. So he decided to upgrade this beamer with what turned out to be a incompatible image.

So when he encountered a supposed update for his projector (which was hosted on Facebook),  which made the watermark optional, he took a leap of faith…. and was disappointed,  the watermark was gone, but also the rest of his projector functionality, he bricked it.

Assuming that the firmware file, retrieved from Facebook clearly wasn’t a full SPI-flash, we searched on, with result! We found some Russian electronics forum, which contained a full dump of a Tronfy projector (which striking similarities). This file did contain the latter part of what remained in the SPI flash.

But we probably will dive into the firmware one more time, in order to remove the watermark. Presumably it is a bitmap, with some color, used for the transparent background. Duplicating those ‘colors’ to the white ‘UNIC’ letters will take care of things.

This is going to be a hard work to do, I bought a 50w led chip from ebay as I"m planing to build my own projector, the main problem is the size of the led and the heatsink. There is not enough room inside the projector , besides you need to include the led driver as the power for the 50w led must be at least 32 volts. You also need to modify the part that is attached to the fresnel and led, a black plastic cover with aluminum sheets inside, they work as condenser. What called my atention was the keystone feature, is a mechanism that moves the fresnel between the lcd and triplet lens, that is why you might see one of the sides (up or down) out of focus.

Projectors are a great way of getting a massive screen for a fraction of the cost. But with projectors rapidly climbing into the thousands, a market of portable LED projectors have become available. The UNIC UC40 is an 800 lumen LED projector costing under $100.

The UC40 packs in HDMI input, a built-in media player that can play media from a variety of sources such as USB and SD cards, and an 800×480 pixel resolution.

The projector is relatively compact compared to most projectors at 20.1×15.3cm. It’s not exactly pocketable, but you wont need the world’s biggest table to support it.

The design is standard projector fare – functional. The top and bottom are made of white plastic, whilst a black plastic body houses all the vents and ports.

It’s important to remember that the UC40 is a $100 projector and as such, it’s performance will not match those that are 10-100 times the price. Given this, I was pretty impressed.

Although the projector is bright for a pocket projector, don’t even bother trying to use this projector in a well-lit room. Although the image is (barely) visible, it’s not watchable by any means.

You’ll probably notice the “UNIC” logo in the top right of the screen. It’s always there and there doesn’t seem to be a way of turning it off. It’s not overly noticeable but annoying nevertheless.

The built-in speaker is acceptable, but I didn’t exactly come into this expecting the tiny speaker to set the world on fire. It’s got enough volume to fill a small room but suffers the same problems as tablet speakers – sounding hollow and lacking bass. Thankfully, the UC40 has 3.5mm audio out so I was able to switch it to my OAXIS Bento which made for a much better experience.

The UNIC UC40 is a respectable projector given its sub-$100 price tag. There are some frustrating issues like the UNIC branding and the loud fan, but if you’ve got a dark room and an external speaker, you should be impressed. With it’s ability to play back media without anything connected and extensive connectivity options, it’s definitely worth the price of admission.

The UNIC UC40 Projector is a great projector for its price. With the right environment, the UC40 outputs a clear picture with decent sound. Being able to play your media without needing to hook anything up is a massive plus. Whilst the resolution and brightness is low relative to traditional home theatre projectors, remember you"re getting respectable performance at just over $100 - a fraction of the price of traditional projectors.
