Built for adventure. Designed to bring back amazing looking souvenirs. The Tough TG-5 is packed with pro features that help you nail bright, crisp outdoor shots even in challenging conditions. Whether you’re shooting on a rafting trip or in a snowboard park, you’re focused on getting awesome shots. Your camera should take care of itself. The TG-5 does – no protective housing needed. It’s waterproof to 50 ft (15 m), crushproof up to 220 lbf (100 kgf), and shockproof from 7 ft (2.1 m). It’s dustproof and works great even at a bone-chilling 14°F (-10°C). We’ve even designed the knobs and buttons for easy operation while you’re wearing heavy gloves.

The TG-5"s ergonomic design features an Accessory Lock to secure optional lenses and other accessories. The waterproof TCON-T01 Teleconverter Lens boosts the TG-5’s optical zoom to nearly 7x, while the waterproof FCON-T01 Fisheye Converter Lens produces distinctive ultra-wide photos. Shoot evenly lit macro shots with help from the LG-1 Light Guide and waterproof FD-1 Flash Diffuser. Keep your TG-5 conveniently strapped to a backpack or chest harness using the CSCH-123 Sport Holder, and dive deeper – up to 147 feet (45 meters) – using the PT-058 Underwater Housing.

These days, the rugged, waterproof segment of the camera market is one of the few areas in which there"s a good reason for buying a standalone compact camera. Over the last decade since Apple wowed us with its first iPhone, followed in short order by Google"s Android, smartphones have demolished the rest of the compact market. But despite their clear strengths in portability, connectivity and performance, many smartphones aren"t waterproof and even fewer are ruggedized. And even if it"s built like a tank, you probably don"t want to risk such an expensive device -- and one which touches on so many areas of your life -- as your smartphone.

But while the "take it anywhere" advantage of a compact ruggedized, waterproof camera over a smartphone is obvious, there hasn"t been such a clear box ticked in the image quality department. Thanks to some big improvements made in smartphone cameras over the last few years coupled with the stagnation of the compact camera market right as it reached the peak of its ill-advised lust for the mighty megapixel, smartphones and compacts have been much of a muchness in terms of the end results.

With the TOUGH TG-5, Olympus aims to change all of that by taking the rugged, waterproof camera upmarket. In the process, it"s had to bump the price up a little, but at US$450 or thereabouts, the TG-5 is still quite reasonable and certainly more affordable than all but the most basic of unlocked smartphones. And it promises a big step forwards in image quality thanks to the pairing of three important bits of kit.

And just like that of the earlier TG-4, it"s impressively solid, said to be able to withstand 220 pounds (100 kg) of crushing force, is waterproof to 50 feet (15 m), and capable of surviving a drop from seven feet (2.1 m) onto an unspecified surface. It"s also dustproof and freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C), and now sports a dual-pane cover glass over the lens to help avoid it fogging up when the temperature suddenly changes.

The Olympus TG-5 performs as expected in the print quality department given the relatively small sensor. A very good 13 x 19 inch print can be attained while shooting at base ISO, and this is a nice feat in general for a rugged waterproof camera. And yet if you intend to print 8 x 10"s you will for sure want to remain at ISO 400 and below, as anything higher will simply not yield good results while printing at 8 x 10 inches. Given the larger pixels courtesy of the move back to 12 megapixels from 16MP in the TG-4, we"d hoped for better high ISO performance as compared to the predecessor, but the sensor size really limits the performance potential above ISO 400, regardless of the slight increase in pixel size.

With summer season just around the corner, now is the perfect time for new rugged cameras to start popping up. And what do you know, Olympus has introduced the Tough TG-5, a point-and-shoot with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor (1/2.3-inch), 25-100mm f/2.0 wide-angle lens (35mm equivalent), 4x optical zoom, 12,800 max ISO and the latest TruePic VIII image processor. If you"re looking to record your adventures, you can do so in 4K at 25 and 30fps, or 1080p at 25, 30, 50, 60 and 120fps (slow-motion videos, anyone?). Naturally, since this is a rugged camera after all, the TG-5 is waterproof (50ft), crushproof, dustproof and freezeproof.

You"ll also get built-in GPS, RAW+JPEG shooting, a 3-inch LCD and WiFi, which makes it easy for you to transfer your images to a smartphone. The Tough TG-5 is hitting stores in June for $450, while an underwater case for extra protection (147ft) will be sold separately for $300.

Olympus has been producing top-quality, rugged-and-waterproof compact cameras for years, and its latest, the Tough TG-5 ($449), is one of its best yet. For starters, it"s waterproof to a depth of 50 feet, which should suit most people"s needs. And, it produces photos and video clips with very good image quality, has an abundant assortment of modes, settings and features — including the ability to capture RAW images files, 4K-resolution video and bursts of photos at 20 frames per second. It’s a worthy successor to the TG-4 as one of the best waterproof cameras, as well as one of the best cameras, period.

What"s nice about this dial is that you can quickly control and change various exposure and other settings in the menus. You can also use it to scroll through other sections of the menus. Additionally, I liked that you can access many modes, features and setting via the LCD screen by pressing the "OK" button: Doing so brings up a host of settings on the right-side and bottom border of the LCD. You simply navigate to the setting you want via the multiselector control and press OK to select it.

The TG-5 measures 4.5 x 2.6 x 1.3 inches, similar to the Nikon Coolpix W300, which is 4.4 x 2.6 x 1.2 inches. At 8.8 ounces, the TG-5 is heavier than the 8.2-ounce W300. In addition to being waterproof to 50 feet — the W300 can do as deep as 100 feet — the TG-5 is rated to withstand a 7-foot drop.

However, because the TG-5 has the ability to shoot in a RAW-file format, I was able to open the low-light test photo in an image editor (like Adobe Photoshop) and, using the program"s Camera Raw module, restore some of a photo’s detail, color and contrast, as well as minimize noise and other aberrations. As my test images reveal, it won"t produce the quality and detail you get shooting in bright light, but the RAW-file format does allow you some latitude in low-light and other challenging situations. It"s a powerful feature not available in the W300 and one of several reasons the Olympus TG-5 is our best rugged-and-waterproof camera.

I also I had a lot of fun playing with the variety of filters or fine-art modes Olympus included on the camera. (In the photo gallery, you can see four different filters I used for the same image of my office window. Some of these filters can also be used when capturing video.) The TG-5 also comes with a 3-inch LCD (although it doesn’t swivel nor include a touch screen).

Although it"s very pricey for a point-and-shoot, the rugged-and-waterproof Olympus Tough TG-5 provides exceptional features that almost any photography enthusiast would appreciate, yet it includes easy-to-use auto and scene modes that will help novices get the most out of their images. While it can’t go as deep as the W300, the TG-5 not only captures high-quality photos and video in most settings, but it also provides you with a bevy of controls and features to take your images or video clips to the next level. That"s why the TG-5 is our top-rated rugged-and-waterproof model.

As the latest camera from a brand that actively considers underwater shooters when designing its products, this camera is packed full of features useful to underwater photo and video shooters. Not only is the camera waterproof down to 50ft (15m), but it is designed with the Olympus PT-058 UW housing rated to 147ft (45m). This housing is the most affordable TG-5 housing on the market and accepts most popular underwater photo accessories.

The camera retains the ruggedness of its predecessor; it is waterproof to 50 ft, freezeproof to 14°F / -10°C, crushproof to 220 lbf / 100 kgf, and shockproof from 7 ft / 2.1 m.

The TG-5 also has the huge advantage of the camera itself being waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof, and splashproof, allowing it to be used in any environment without a housing (as long as you don"t take it too deep underwater). Finally, don"t forget the options to attach Olympus" add-on fisheye and telephoto lenses directly to the camera body.

But then again, my smartphone isn"t rugged or waterproof, and doesn"t have an optical zoom. Adding to that, the TG-5 offers Raw capture, GPS logging, good external controls, a more powerful flash and a crazy good macro mode. With the Tough, you"ve got a pretty compelling, compact package without the hassle of endless smartphone apps, clunky waterproof cases and fiddly lens attachments.

The Olympus TOUGH TG-5 is the latest in the company’s massively popular line of rugged waterproof compacts. Olympus launched the Tough brand back in 2009, but it wasn’t until the TOUGH TG-1 in 2012 that people really started to take notice. Now, the TOUGH range is highly respected among outdoor adventurers and the brand that other manufacturers look to emulate.

The TG-5 was launched in May 2017 replacing the two year old TG-4. As before, it’s waterproof to a depth of 15 metres, can withstand a drop from 2.1 metres, is freezeproof down to -10C, crushproof to 100Kg and dustproof. It retains the older model’s 4x optical zoom with an equivalent range of 25-100mm but updates the sensor, swapping the earlier 16 Megapixel chip for a 12 Megapixel one, a welcome move which should result in better noise performance and overall image quality, not to mention an increase in the sensitivity range to 12,800 ISO. The new sensor is paired with the same TruePic VIII processor used in the company’s flagship mirrorless model, the OMD EM1 Mk II.

The TG-5 isn’t the only new rugged waterproof camera to be released this year, in January 2107 Fujifilm announced the FinePix XP120. With a 5x optical zoom and a 16.4 Megapixel sensor, the XP120 is waterproof to a depth of 20 meters, freezeproof to -10C and shockproof from 1.75m. It’s around half the price of the TOUGH TG-5 but lacks some of its sophistication and features such as built-in GPS and thermometer, 4K movies and RAW shooting. Read on to see which is the best rugged waterproof compact for you.

The TOUGH TG-5 is the fifth generation TOUGH model to make use of the 4x 25-100mm equivalent f2.0 – 4.9 zoom lens. Ordinarily that would be a stretch, compact manufacturers tend to introduce new zooms with every two generations and sometimes even more frequently, but waterproof cameras are different and there are two reasons Olympus has stuck with the lens it introduced on the TOUGH TG-1 back in 2012.

The first is that because of the limited space inside an enclosed waterproof housing it’s technically difficult to make a zoom lens longer than 4x so, even if manufacturers wanted to, there’s no way they can gain a competitive advantage by extending the zoom. That said, if you’re looking for a longer range the FinePix XP120 has a 5x optical zoom with a range of 28 – 140mm equivalent but with a less bright f3.9 – 4.9 aperture. The TOUGH TG-870 also squeezes in a 5x optical zoom, again with a less bright f3.5 – 5.7 aperture.

Which brings us to the second reason. The TOUGH TG-5’s maximum aperture at the wide angle setting is f2.0 which is unusually bright for a waterproof compact. This gives it a big advantage when shooting underwater and in other low-light environments because it means the you can shoot with a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO sensitivity than other less well endowed cameras. For example if you were shooting the same scene with the TOUGH TG5 and FinePix XP120, you’d be able to shoot at 100 ISO on the TOUGH TG-5 but you’d need 400 ISO on the XP120.

A large part of the shooting experience with a rugged waterproof model like the TOUGH TG-5 centres around the ergonomics. It doesn’t matter how many features a camera has, if they’re difficult to access they won’t get used. This of course applies to all cameras but even more so with rugged waterproofs, when you’re often taking pictures in challenging environments.

I’m happy to report that the TOUGH TG-5 does very well in this respect. It not only looks good, but has been thoughtfully designed with a great manual control layout. Sure, the mode and control dials could be a little bigger, but let’s not forget that it’s unusual to have these on a waterproof compact at all, on the FinePix XP120 you’ll need to rely on the four-way controller and menus for these functions.

Looking for the best waterproof camera you can buy in 2022? Whether you’re an underwater photographer or a watersport enthusiast, the best waterproof cameras can capture excellent images above and below the waves.

From reinforced compact models to all-out action cameras, we’ve tested the best waterproof cameras to help you find your ideal option. The buying guide below features a range of recommendations to suit every skill level and budget, so whatever you’re shooting, you’re sure to make a splash.

Flagship smartphones today might offer some degree of waterproofing, but every camera featured in this list is fully water-sealed and good for a dunking. In fact, the best waterproof cameras in 2022 can function several meters below the surface. So whether you’re snorkeling, sailing or swimming, our pick of the best waterproof cameras will help you shoot high-quality stills and video wherever there’s water.

When choosing your perfect waterproof camera, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. Just how waterproof you need a camera to be will depend on your chosen activity: if you’re a keen free-diver, for example, something like the Nikon Coolpix W300 will fit the bill, as it’s waterproof to 30 meters. Equally, if your activities require gloves, you might want a camera that’s simple to operate, with accessible physical controls, like the Fujifilm XP140.

Our overall pick for the best waterproof camera you can buy in 2022 is the Olympus Tough TG-6. Properly tough yet impressively versatile, it’s an accessible premium compact that can capture fantastic stills and video almost anywhere. That said, there might be a better camera for your specific requirements in the list below. The GoPro Hero9 Black, for example, offers an impressive blend of 5K video and outstanding HyperSmooth image stabilization, in a rugged, compact package.

Olympus"s Tough line of waterproof cameras has arguably the strongest reputation here, and the company has kitted its most recent TG-6 model with features decidedly towards the premium end of the scale. Raw shooting? Check. 4K video? Yep, that too. GPS? Hell yes. Even the same processing engine as the OM-D E-M1 X mirrorless model features here.

Given that it’s the most powerful and versatile action camera GoPro has ever made, it’s little wonder that the Hero 9 Black is one of the best waterproof cameras you can buy. Its predecessor might offer better value for most, but with a new 23.6MP sensor that delivers 5K video, the Hero 9 Black is a top option for underwater recording. While it’s waterproof down to 10 meters without a housing, the Hero 9 Black’s slightly laggy touchscreen isn’t really usable underwater.

With specs to rival the GoPro Hero 8 Black, the slightly older DJI Osmo Action represents a more affordable yet still very capable underwater action cam. Waterproof down to 11 meters without a housing – or an impressive 60m in a sold-separately case – and wrapped in a solid metal shell, there’s no questioning its durability. Like the GoPro Hero 9 Black, it offers both front and rear screens for easy framing, while shooting underwater is intuitive with the shortcut buttons.

Though you wouldn’t know it from looking, the XP140 is marginally more rugged than its predecessor, making it close to indestructible. Dustproof, shockproof to 1.8m and freeze proof to -10ºC, it’s also waterproof down to 25m, so it should survive even the deepest of snorkeling expeditions.

With prices lower than ever, the Hero 8 Black arguably hits the action cam sweet spot. It’s certainly worth considering as an underwater camera: waterproof to 10m without a housing, it also serves up decent HDR for scenes with broad contrast ranges. And though low-light performance could be better, the optional Light Mod means you can easily illuminate the murky depths.

Panasonic"s new Lumix TS7 (called the Lumix FT7 outside the US) is the latest waterproof camera here. As opposed to Olympus, which reduced the resolution of its TG-5, Panasonic has gone the other direction, increasing the pixel count from 16.1MP in the TS5 / FT5 to 20.4MP in the Lumix TS7 / FT7. Lens coverage remains the same as its predecessor, with a 4.6x zoom range that covers 28-128mm, but interestingly, the lens loses its Leica branding.

The WG-60 from Ricoh has some pretty strong tough credentials – it"s waterproof to a depth of 14m/45.9ft and shockproof from a fall of up to 1.6m/5.2ft, while it should withstand a force of up to 100kg/220lbs. It"s also dust-proof, and can operate in temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.
