Revealing images showing the instrument panel of a Volkswagen vehicle purported to be the all-new Passat B8 surfaced online in the VWClubMalaysia public Facebook group.
The instrument panel shown is the top of the line Active Info Display that is a 12.3-inch fully configurable TFT monitor with one image clearly showing the navigational display with a map of Malaysian roads!
This clearly informs us that not only is the Passat on Malaysian roads as repeatedly sighted, but that Volkswagen is giving us a highly-specced vehicle, with at least one variant getting the fitment of Active Info Display.
Based on a stretched version of Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform, the Passat B8 was launched globally in 2014 and is set to arrive in Malaysia not too long now. Much of what will be offered here is still being kept under wraps, so stay tuned for further info.
SINGAPORE — First revealed in July last year at a design facility in Potsdam, Germany, the new Volkswagen Passat is now available for sale in Singapore starting at $152,800 with COE.
Potential buyers have a choice of two direct-injection turbocharged petrol engines, a 1.8-litre with 180hp and a 2.0-litre with 220hp. The new Passat is based on the MQB platform (as seen in the Golf) and is claimed to be much stiffer and stronger than before, while also being up to 85kg lighter. The weight reduction should make it more agile and fuel-efficient.
The latter has an eight-inch touch-screen and also comes with MirrorLink smartphone connectivity, so you can control certain apps and functions through the infotainment system itself. We tested a similar system on the new VW Touran, read about it and other smartphone connection systems here. The Comfortline model receives a less feature-rich 6.5-inch infotainment system.
“The Passat is really the car of the year for us (in terms of sales),” says Steffen Schwarz, Volkswagen Singapore’s managing director. “And earlier this year it was voted as such, too.”
The Passat recently beat six other cars including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 2-Series Active Tourer to win European Car of the Year at the Geneva motor Show held in March earlier this year.
One of the key features of the new Passat is the active driver’s display which uses a 12.3-inch TFT screen to replace conventional instruments. Although it hasn’t been approved for Singapore yet, it’s expected to be available on future models.
Whether a plug-in hybrid Passat makes it here, Volkswagen already has its hands full with the Golf Sportsvan; the MPV version of its popular Golf is already in town and undergoing homologation, ahead of a local launch soon.
Indeed, the Passat arrives in the middle of what is turning out to be a busy 2015 for Volkswagen here. This year alone has seen the launch of the mid-life Scirocco at the Singapore Motor Show held early January, followed by the new Jetta in March and the facelifted Touareg in April.
Volkswagen has sold more than 23 million Passats since it was introduced 42 years ago, but the model’s popularity has accelerated sharply. The company now sells 1.1 million of them every year.
With softer lines and an elegant sweeping profile, the new Passat is 14mm lower and 12mm wider than the outgoing model. The front end incorporates the brand’s new identity, with the three-bar chrome grille merging with the swept back headlights. At the back, a Phaeton-inspired rear end houses two chrome exhaust pipes which sit flush with the rear bumper.
Inside, technology and comfort have been the main focal points, with the conventional instrument cluster being replaced by a fully configurable 12.3-inch TFT display. Sadly, it will not be a standard feature but a separate 6.5-inch colour display in the centre console is fitted across the range.
Despite being shorter than the outgoing model – only by 2mm however – the new Passat offers more passenger space than before. That’s thanks to shorter front and rear overhangs, which allow the passenger compartment to be stretched by 33mm. There’s also more headroom as passengers sit lower to the ground and boot space is up by 21 litres, to 586. Space in the estate model has been boosted even further with boot capacity increasing by 47-litres, up to 650 litres.
The first VW Group product to be based on a stretched version of the MQB platform, the Passat will be up to 85kg lighter than its predecessor. That’s thanks largely to the use of high-strength vacuum-formed steels in the body – accounting for 33kg, as well as the chassis (9kg), powertrain (40kg) and electrics (3kg).
While the overall length is actually 2mm shorter than its predecessor, a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs mean the passenger compartment is 33mm longer. The front seats have been dropped by 10mm, while rear passengers benefit from an extra 26mm of headroom. The boot in the Passat Estate has grown to 650-litres, up 47-litres on its predecessor, 50-litres more than the Octavia Estate and a massive 113-litre bigger than the soon-to-be-replaced Ford Mondeo Estate.
Some months ago during 2014 Geneva Motor Show VW group in its Audi flavour announced a 12.3 inch screen with TFT display with the capability to display three-dimensional, full-screen maps adding a plus respect to what we can see in the very high level Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Today during Volkswagen Passat 2015 premiere such cockpit display has been presented for the German Maker class D Passat B8 version.
This is in my opinion a great step in infotainment and graphical interface in Car world because not related to a top class car but to a middle-high car meaning that soon we’ll could see such approach also in the middle C-class cars as VW Golf.
If the apporac used in Audi TT 12.3 inch dashboard has not been changed, the TFT is powered by two Nvidia Tegra K1 mobile processors based on the same graphics architecture as that used in the world’s extreme gaming PCs and the fastest supercomputer. The “virtual cockpit” in Audi TT and I expect also in VW Passat sports High-res LCD panels with 1,440 by 550 pixel, the mentioned Nvidia twin quad-core CPUs, 4G data, natural language voice recognition, computer controlled four wheel drive, very high level navigation experience and more.
Volkswagen has finally launched the new generation of the Passat in India and it"s priced at Rs. 29.99 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The Passat will be available in two variants and sadly there"s no plug-in hybrid variant introduced yet. First unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the Volkswagen Passat followed the design language of the new age cars from VW. The wide stance and the sharper design made it look better than before. Though the car shares its underpinnings with the Skoda Superb, both cars look worlds apart. The new-gen Passat has taken nearly three years to come to India but the launch has been a much awaited one. We say this because we"ve already driven the car and know exactly what it"s all about.
The Passat is Volkswagen"s second major launch this year after the Tiguan SUV and shows that the company is not afraid to enter premium segments though the sales in these segments have suffered in India post the introduction of GST. The Passat is based on the same MQB platform as the Tiguan and local assembly of the car has already begun in India.
In its eighth generation, the Volkswagen Passat gets a sharper design language over its predecessor. Compared to its predecessor, the proportions are better with a longer wheelbase and a lower body. Characterized by horizontal lines, it features a crisp and angular shape. You also get a wide triple-slat grille, LED headlamps with signature DRLs and dynamic Light Assist feature.
At the rear, the up level LED taillights change their graphics from horizontal to vertical when the brakes are applied. The overall design looks smoother and clutter-free and the car looks longer as well. However, the new Passat is 2 mm shorter, but gets a 79 mm longer wheelbase. In the process, the new generation Passat gets shorter overhangs, while the model is also 12 mm wider and 14 mm lower than the previous model. The boot capacity has been increased by 26 litres to 586 litres.
The cabin is a lovely looking thing as it"s clutter free and simple. A 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument cluster makes it to the Passat, shared with the Audi TT, while you also get the touchscreen infotainment system on the centre console with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to this, the sedan comes with new Park Assist, Head Up Display (HUD) unit, and a host of new safety features on board.
Under the hood, the new generation Volkswagen Passat will draw power from the 2-litre TDI four-cylinder diesel engine tuned to produce 174 bhp, while paired to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. There"s no manual transmission on offer. Sadly, due to the current taxation structure in India, Volkswagen will not be bringing in the plug-in hybrid version of the Passat yet, but it is on the cards. The all-new Volkswagen Passat will have a host of rivals to compete against including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord as well as its Czech sibling the Skoda Superb.
