In this tutorial I am going to explain about the pin out, working and control systems of character lcd’s. Character lcd’s comes in many sizes for example 8×1, 8×2, 8×4, 16×1, 16×2, 20×1, 20×2, 20×4, 24×1, 24×2, 24×4, 32×1, 32×2, 40×1, 40×2 and 40×4. In these MxN dimensions, M represents number of coulombs & N represents number of rows.

All these Lcd’s available in market have 14 or 16 pins depending on the vendor/supplier. Also they all contains a same lcd controller in them which controls all their activities. Talks to external peripherals(like microcontrollers) receives data from external devices and displays them on lcd display screen. Generally every character lcd has HD44780 controller in it which controls every operation of character lcd. Some variants and competitors of HD44780 also placed step in embedded market but they are not popular for exampleAIP31066 , KS0066 , SPLC780 and ST7066 lcd controller.

In these 14 pins, 8 are data pins(FromDB-0toDB-7). Three are lcd control pinsRS(Register Select),R/W(Read-Write) &En(Enable). Two are lcd power pinsVcc(+5v)Vss(Gnd). The last pin islcd contrast pin(V0).

If lcd contains 16 pins than the extra 2 pins are LED+ and LED- pins. LED+ and LED- are for lcd’s back light, if you want to switch on the back light of lcd then use these pins other wise leave them void.

Character lcd’s which have pins arranged in two lines like headers, their pin-out is given below. Female header pin-out is shown below. Vendors for ease pre-solder the lcd pins and provide a female header for connections.

Mostly character lcds contains HD44780U lcd controller in them. HD44780 was developed by Hitachi. A single HD44780 can handle up to 80 characters. In 40×4 lcd display total characters which we can display on lcd are 40×4=160. So to control 160 characters we need two HD44780 controllers. To work with two HD44780 controllers we need an extra pin to energize the second controller.

Lcd contrast pin is same like fine tuning your television. In televisions we fine tune stations using remote but in character lcd’s we have to manually do it by varying the resistance. Varying the resistance means we control the input current to lcd. Varying resistance will fade or brighten the characters or data appearing on lcd screen.

Character Lcd’s can be interfaced in 8-bit and 4-bit mode with external controllers. In 8-bit mode all the data lines(DB0-DB7) of lcd are utilized. In 4-bit mode only four data pins of lcd are utilized (DB7-DB4). In 4-bit mode first the 8-bit ASCII value is divided in to two nibbles, first the upper nibble is send on data line and then the lower nibble. 4-bit mode is used when we want to save GPIO pins of our external device like microcontoller. An example of lcd connection with remote controller is shown in the picture below.

I prepared a good tutorial on interfacing character lcd in 8-bit and 4-bit mode with microcontrollers. Demo codes are also presented and explained in the post. Click the below button to take the tutorial.

These displays are straightforward to use and are a great way to provide a user interface on many projects where you need more info than simple LED indicators or 7-Segment displays can provide since these are full alphanumeric displays with 4 lines of 20 characters each for a total of 80 characters which is a fair amount of info.  For an interactive display, pairing this type of display with a rotary encoder to navigate and select menu items on the display can provide a very nice user interface.

The display is composed of a 20 character x 4 line LCD display with a blue backlight and white characters.  Each of the characters are composed of a 5 x 8 dot matrix for good character representation.

The backlight intensity is not directly controllable though the I2C interface, however there is a jumper on the I2C board that supplies power to the backlight.  That jumper can be removed and a voltage applied to the header pin nearest the ‘LED’ markings on the board to provide power to the backlight separately.

The backlight can go down to about 3V before it goes out.  It is not known what the safe upper limit is for driving the LCD backlight so it is probably best not to exceed 5V by too much.  At 5V, the backlight draws about 30mA, so it should also be possible to drive it with a PWM pin off a uC to allow the display to be dimmed via software if desired.

This display incorporates an I2C interface that requires only 2 pins on a uC to interface with and it has good library support to get up and running fast.   The I2C interface is a daughter board attached to the back of the LCD module.

If you need to adjust I2C address to avoid a conflict, this can be done on the I2C adapter board on the back of the module.  There are 3 address jumper locations marked A0, A1, A2.  Normally these lines are pulled high.  If you bridge these pads, it grounds that address line.  If you were to bridge all 3 to ground, the address would be 0x20.  The range of all possible addresses spans from 0x20 to 0x27

You will find the raw 20×4 displays without the I2C interface being sold, but those have a parallel bus interface that requires many pins on the microcontroller to control, so it is generally best to stick with the I2C interface version like this one.

This article includes everything you need to know about using acharacter I2C LCD with Arduino. I have included a wiring diagram and many example codes to help you get started.

In the second half, I will go into more detail on how to display custom characters and how you can use the other functions of the LiquidCrystal_I2C library.

Once you know how to display text and numbers on the LCD, I suggest you take a look at the articles below. In these tutorials, you will learn how to measure and display sensor data on the LCD.

Each rectangle is made up of a grid of 5×8 pixels. Later in this tutorial, I will show you how you can control the individual pixels to display custom characters on the LCD.

They all use the same HD44780 Hitachi LCD controller, so you can easily swap them. You will only need to change the size specifications in your Arduino code.

The 16×2 and 20×4 datasheets include the dimensions of the LCD and you can find more information about the Hitachi LCD driver in the HD44780 datasheet.

Note that an Arduino Uno with the R3 layout (1.0 pinout) also has the SDA (data line) and SCL (clock line) pin headers close to the AREF pin. Check the table below for more details.

After you have wired up the LCD, you will need to adjust the contrast of the display. On the I2C module, you will find a potentiometer that you can turn with a small screwdriver.

Note that counting starts at 0 and the first argument specifies the column. So lcd.setCursor(2,1) sets the cursor on the third column and the second row.

Next the string ‘Hello World!’ is printed with lcd.print("Hello World!"). Note that you need to place quotation marks (” “) around the text since we are printing a text string.

The example sketch above shows you the basics of displaying text on the LCD. Now we will take a look at the other functions of the LiquidCrystal_I2C library.

This function turns on automatic scrolling of the LCD. This causes each character output to the display to push previous characters over by one space.

If the current text direction is left-to-right (the default), the display scrolls to the left, if the current direction is right-to-left, the display scrolls to the right.

I would love to know what projects you plan on building (or have already built) with these LCDs. If you have any questions, suggestions or if you think that things are missing in this tutorial, please leave a comment down below.

This 20-character, 4-line parallel liquid crystal display provides a large viewing area. It features white text on a blue background with an LED backlight and uses the common HD44780 interface, so sample interface code is widely available for a variety of microcontrollers. This display is electrically compatible with the LCD that is included as part of some of our Orangutan X2 robot controller packages, although the physical interface is different.

As shown in the diagram above, a potentiometer whose output is connected to Vo will allow you to set the contrast for optimal viewing of your display.

This LCD has an LED backlight. The voltage drop across the LEDs is typically about 3.2 V and the recommended current through the LEDs is 72 mA. This LCD includes a 25.5 Ω resistance (two 51 Ω resistors in parallel) in series with the backlight, so an external current-limiting resistor is not required for backlight supply voltages up to 5 V. For higher voltages, you should add a current-limiting resistor RLIMIT as shown above where:

Note: No cables or connectors are included with this product, but a straight or right angle male header can be purchased separately to be soldered into the through-holes. We also have 1×16-pin female headers and crimp connector housings to mate with the male headers. This LCD is intended for use with 5V systems.

16x2 LCD modules are very commonly used in most embedded projects, the reason being its cheap price, availability, programmer friendly and available educational resources.

16×2 LCD is named so because; it has 16 Columns and 2 Rows. There are a lot of combinations available like, 8×1, 8×2, 10×2, 16×1, etc. but the most used one is the 16×2 LCD. So, it will have (16×2=32) 32 characters in total and each character will be made of 5×8 Pixel Dots. A Single character with all its Pixels is shown in the below picture.

Now, we know that each character has (5×8=40) 40 Pixels and for 32 Characters we will have (32×40) 1280 Pixels. Further, the LCD should also be instructed about the Position of the Pixels. Hence it will be a hectic task to handle everything with the help of MCU, hence an Interface IC like HD44780is used, which is mounted on the backside of the LCD Module itself. The function of this IC is to get the Commands and Data from the MCU and process them to display meaningful information onto our LCD Screen. You can learn how to interface an LCD using the above mentioned links. If you are an advanced programmer and would like to create your own library for interfacing your Microcontroller with this LCD module then you have to understand the HD44780 IC working and commands which can be found its datasheet.
