Ours is a Sony Bravia that is now over 10 years old. Several months ago we started noticing lines, especially on the left (our left) side of the screen. They’d go away after the tv warmed up. Then we started noticing it was darker on that side of the screen, but again, after the tv warmed up the screen would be normal. Then about two months ago it started getting worse and didn’t ever get completely better, even after the tv warmed up. So I watched some youtube videos that all talked about the ribbon cables becoming loose over time and to apply pressure along the top and see if that made it better, and if so, it was a loose cable and if you put electrical tape or something that would help keep the pressure, it would fix the problem. Hubby pressed along the top and sure enough, when he pressed in one spot on the left side suddenly the picture cleared up. Stayed good for about a week, then problems again, pressed again, fixed again. A week or so later, same problem, but this time when he pressed on it nothing got better.

So I decided to take the cover off and look at it better. As I was pressing on the tops of the ribbon cables that run down from the top of the frame, for a minute it got better but then suddenly there was a wide white vertical line, with a thin green one down the center of it, running down the front of the screen, and it was perfectly aligned with one of the cables. So now I still have the dark side of the screen, and some ghosting, and some lines, but now this bright white streak/line right down the front. Another weird thing is that if the whole screen is bright (like watching a show set in a snowy place) then the darkness even on the left side is basically gone, but if the scene is dark at all, that side is almost black. I don’t know if it means that particular ribbon cable is bad, or if something is loose, if things need to be replaced or what. It’s very frustrating as it’s been a great tv. Hubby wants to just buy a new one, but even if he does I would still like to try and figure out this one as it could then go in another room.

Due to the fact that the issue is isolated to a single line (even with multiple pixels in height) it"s unlikely it"s the actual signal (e.g. cable or connector pins).

Some issue with the connection would most likely screw up several lines and/or the whole image and it won"t be isolated to exactly one line (especially with digital connections).

If the screen flickers, make sure the display settings in Windows match the native resolution and refresh rate for the display. Find the native resolution of a flat panel display on the box, in the specifications, or in the printed material that came with the display. Some common native resolutions are 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1920 x 1200, and 1680 x 1050. The most common refresh rate for LCD displays is 60 Hz. Check the environment around the display. Displays are sensitive to magnetic fields. Speakers, florescent lights, fans, cell phones, radios, and any other electrical device can cause flickering. Temporarily move electrical items away from the display to see if they is producing a field that causes the flicker.

To see if the video coming from the computer is causing the problem, temporarily connect the display to another computer, such as a notebook computer.

If the flicker is gone when the display is connected to another computer, the graphics adapter hardware on the first computer might need to be upgraded to use the display.

Hey there Andrew - okay, here’s an update, as requested. There’s quite a bit of info I’m sharing here, because I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE on the internet. It took LOTS of research to figure it out.

I ended up diagnosing the problem as a faulty connection between the ribbon and PCB gold leads, if that description makes any sense. By squeezing the gold leads with my fingers, I was able to get the lines to go away. Now for an embarrassing admission: I attempted to just barely heat up the leads to solidify their connection to the PCB, and I almost instantly melted the ribbon cable. I had the PCB taped off with painter’s tape, but I didn’t realize that the plastic ribbon is also connected to the gold leads (duh!). I did all of this with the unit powered on, and instantly blew the fuse in the power supply. I’m sharing this so all of the other newbies can learn from me and avoid this idiotic mistake. Here’s the replacement fuse for the power supply that I bought, and it’s working well:

I still have an interest in building an updated LED display, and I was able to find out from an obscure Russian forum (thanks to Google Translate) that the display is driven by 2 Epson SED1565 drivers/controllers, those 2 little rectangular chips on the ribbon. Just a random piece of info for you.

But, until that awesome day of discovery, I caved and just bought a beautiful used display pulled from a Korg Triton LE from eBay (would have gladly purchased from Syntaur if it had been in stock). It works perfectly. I pulled the glass display out of the black plastic casing and gently inserted it into the Karma’s original white plastic casing. The LED lighting on the Korg Triton LE comes from a single bulb that is dispersed by the design of that black casing. The Korg Karma is much better as it has around 40 small amber colored LED’s on a PCB that light up the display quite evenly. Just know that there’s a little more to it than just plugging in a new display if your new display does not come from a Karma.

I had purchased new pots for the joystick, but found that DeOxit d5 spray fixed up the originals perfectly for me. Nonetheless, the pots I bought look exactly like the originals. All of the knobs on the Karma use these.

The joystick and knobs were very stiff, and several of the buttons required a bit of pressure to get them to respond. I took the entire keyboard apart and sprayed DeOxit d5 (BIG SHOUT OUT TO SAM MIMS!!!) in all of the knobs, buttons, and the joystick potentiometers to get them working again.

All in all, this keyboard plays like a dream, and far better than it did when I first got it. And… the best part is that I got this synth for free, long story. I am thankful to have a keyboard that is FULL of nostalgia for me!!! Here are some pictures of the final product.

I cannot thank Sam Mims enough! I watched all of his videos restoring synths and they motivated me to try it out. It was a basic part swap out and a failed screen repair, but I still came out ahead, so I’m happy. I learned A LOT through the experience. And I read that Sam played keys for Richard Elliot. I’m a sax player and used to listen to his CD’s all the time in high school. So cool.

How long will your LED display last? In nearly every industry, from retail businesses to concert halls to corporate centers, decision makers need to evaluate the return on investment (ROI) of their LED signage. In most cases, potential buyers go straight to the obvious place: the LED manufacturer’s spec sheet. The industry standard for LED lifespan is 100,000 hours, or about 10 years, and most people assume that’s how long their display will last. But it’s not quite that simple.

The 100,000-hour figure assumes that every diode will be running at full brightness, consistently — which, on an LED screen, is virtually never the case. The lifespan figure can also be misleading because it indicates when a diode degrades to half-brightness, not completely dark. Many other variables affect an LED display’s lifespan; you can’t rely solely on the number on the diode spec sheet.

“The reality is, your screen can often last significantly longer than 100,000 hours,” says Kevin Izatt, a senior product manager in Samsung’s Display division. “We’ve had displays that have been up for 15-plus years with more than adequate brightness. Because the diode is actually only one factor in the lifespan of your LED display.”

The biggest contributor to diode degradation is heat. As you increase a diode’s brightness, it produces more heat. Your display’s physical environment also contributes to the temperature of the diodes, especially for outdoor displays.

“Let’s say you’re in Vegas — Death Valley. The diode is fine to operate at those temperatures, but it will degrade faster,” says Izatt. “Temperature is a big factor — and not one you have control over.”

The quality of your display’s power supply — and how hard it drives the diodes — can have a significant impact on your screen’s lifespan. The other components being powered, such as fans and electrical components, have their own lifespans as well, which are also impacted by the power supply.

“Fans are mechanical; they break down,” explains Izatt. “And similar to your computer, the electrical components don’t last forever. Together, these factors all contribute to the lifespan of an LED display. Looking at just the diode lifespan doesn’t give you the complete story — almost always, another part will go out first.”

“Something like airflow is very important,” says Izatt. “You need a screen that has good cooling, and a design that allows heat to flow out of the back through vents.”

It’s easy to see why: The circuit boards powering the display release heat, and that heat needs to go somewhere. Without a strong design, thermal stress will degrade the life of the display, except for the highest-quality parts — optimal conditions notwithstanding.

“Lots of variations on the color and brightness you use will impact the life of the diode,” explains Izatt. “For instance, black doesn’t use any of the diodes at all. And if your content is using lots of gray, that’s a much lower power output than white.”

That’s not to say you should hold back on displaying rich, vibrant colors — after all, that’s what LED does best. But it does factor into your product’s life expectancy.
