A video wall is not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are many options to choose from when designing a commercial building video wall display: the size and shape of the digital canvas, what type of content will be displayed and the purpose of the video wall. Operationally, you may focus on desired reliability, maintenance and serviceability of the equipment. Hardware and technology decisions ensure the video wall will deliver both the desired viewing and ownership experience.
One of these choices is deciding between an LCD display or an LED video wall. Continue reading to find out more about the basics, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.
Most people are familiar with LCD technology, which stands for Liquid Crystal Display. These types of displays have a massive presence in this world, used in living rooms to watch movies, fast-food restaurants to showcase menus, airports to show flight schedules, and everything in between. LCD technology was developed in the 1960s and has been used worldwide as a standard for roughly 20 years. It is a tried-and-true technology that has stood the test of time and will be around for the foreseeable future.
On an LCD screen, the panel is illuminated by a light source and works through reflection or transmission of light. Overall, LCD displays have better viewing angles and less glare than LED screens. This technology was designed to be energy efficient and tends to be lighter in weight.
An LCD video wall is made up of multiple LCD panel monitors mounted on a surface to create a digital canvas, which then work together to create a unified experience. They operate 24/7 at a high brightness and have thin bezels that help create a seamless look when the displays are placed next to one another.
Bezel thickness and the brightness rating are among key attributes to consider for an LCD video wall display. Here is what each of these means and why.
Bezel:Bezel thicknesses for video wall displays are measured in “bezel-to-bezel” thickness. This is the thickness of the bezel when two displays are placed next to one another. Displays can be either large bezel or thin bezel.
Nits:Brightness is measured in Nits. A higher Nit value means the display will be brighter. A brighter display is necessary in a room that sees plenty of direct sunlight, or if the intent is to draw in visitors from far away. With LCD video walls, the price of the hardware goes up as the display size and brightness increase, and the bezel width decreases.
The next item to consider is the type of content that will be displayed on your video wall. LCD displays have high resolution screens — modern 4K displays have over 8 million pixels! This means that the content being displayed is highly detailed and crystal-clear. A viewer could stand less than 1 foot away from the screen and be able to see exactly what is being shown on the screen.
Like previously mentioned with LCD video walls, an important consideration in the decision-making process is the type of content that will be displayed on the video wall. LED video walls suffer from image degradation and pixilation from up close, so fine details will be lost, and text will be illegible. If detail from up close is important, LCD displays are much better suited for that situation.Content examples that are well-suited for an LCD video wall:
Video walls add exciting drama and premium value to showcase spaces. It is an investment that adds a perfect eye-catching solution for a busy lobby, conference room, or any other space.
Video walls are relatively new. But LCD technology has had decades of mainstream adoption, and with that comes both familiarity and lower costs. If those are important to you, then an LCD video wall is likely the right choice.
LED video walls are similar to LCD video walls, but the digital canvas is built using LED panels. Individual LED panels can be anywhere from 12”x12” to 36”x18”, which is much smaller than LCD displays. LED panels have a larger presence in this world than most might think—they are found indoors and outdoors at stadiums, arenas, concert venues, airports, and in use as large digital advertisements in iconic places such as Times Square.
The module is a small rectangular board that contains all the individual LEDs (light-emitting diodes).Unlike LCD, there is no glass or color filter on the LED video wall panels. The individual diodes that are placed on the modules produce both color and light.
One of the most impressive features of LED panels is that they can be combined to create almost any shape, without a bezel interrupting the digital canvas. LED video wall panels can be placed on curved surfaces, 90-degree edges, and other non-standard surfaces. The smaller size of the panels in relation to LCD video wall displays means they can fill more space on a surface—they aren’t limited to standard 46” and 55” sizes as are LCD video wall displays.
The most important factor to consider when scoping LED panels for a video wall is what is referred to as “pixel pitch.” The pixel pitch is effectively the distance between each pixel on the LED panel—a pixel pitch of 6mm means each pixel is spaced 6 millimeters away from the adjacent pixel. The smaller the pixel pitch, the smaller the distance is between each pixel, which means there are more pixels per square inch on the digital canvas.
Multiply the pixel pitch by 10 for the idealviewing experience –For example, a pixel pitch of 4mm would require a viewer to be 12 feet away to decipher any details in the video wall, and 40 feet away for the best viewing experience.
Lastly, pixel pitch impacts the price of the LED video wall more than any other factor. For example, a 2mm pixel pitch LED video wall costs significantly more than its 10mm pixel pitch counterpart.
As is the case with an LCD video wall, an LED video wall will add exciting drama and premium value to showcase spaces. LED panel displays don’t enjoy the benefit of decades of mainstream adoption as do their LCD counterparts. However, the technology curve is increasing their availability and lowering their costs. At this time, an LED video wall will have higher upfront costs compared to an LCD video wall. If cost is the main concern, then an LED video wall system will not likely fit into your budget
An LED video wall would be well-suited and cost-justified if the intent of the video wall is to provide an immersive viewing experience from a further distance. This could be content with lots of movement, animation, imagery, and bright colors to draw viewers into your space or provide a unique experience.
Aside from LED video wall cost, there are other factors to consider which could make an LED video wall system the frontrunner for your project. Here are the advantages and disadvantages to consider:
Limitless shapes and sizes:the smaller size of LED panels allows them to be combined to create unique canvases, including curved, 90-degree edge, and other combinations not possible with LCD displays
Video wall systems come in all shapes and sizes. The components used to create the video wall experience vary widely. Consider variables other than video wall cost when scoping out both the content and the hardware. Because these parts and pieces could make or break the captive viewing experience you’re hoping to achieve, or worse, defeat the entire purpose of that video wall.

Walls.io offers a unique feature to showcase sponsored ads from brands you partner with. This feature is called Sponsored Posts, and they are special posts on your social wall that aren’t filled with regular social content from your sources. Instead, you can upload specific images (or videos or just text) that you want to display there and have it show up on your wall in regular intervals.
Customers are 10 times more likely to observe dynamic digital signage content than static messages, which makes video the perfect content form; it’s also usually screen-ready in 16:9 format. Video to share on digital signage could be your showreel, a new demo video, or a customer caught on screen talking about how great you are. Add to your screen playlist either by direct upload or through an app such as YouTube or Vimeo.
If you need to create a quick notice, perhaps detailing a room change or a meeting time, there are a wealth of apps to make that happen. Like Noticeboard - an app that can be found in the ScreenCloud App Store. It allows you to create a quick and easy display in seconds, and also allows for real-time edits.
This type of content works well as ‘filler’ content in between video, ads and social media displays to stop your viewers from getting digital-overload.
This is one of the most important content displays you’ll create if you work in a restaurant, fast food chain or bar. It also works in an office cafeteria, an event setup or even as a fun noticeboard where you can swap menu items out for things you’re working on or fun descriptions of your team members. If you’re a franchise, this works especially well as you can change the price of an item across all screens and locations from one ScreenCloud login.
We love Slack at ScreenCloud. Like many startups, it’s how we do about 90% of our communication. So when a room’s really crucial to what we do, like our #praise room, we share it on our digital signage screens. This is made really easy with the Slack app.
How much time do you think your reception staff spend directing people to the right floor or meeting room? We love using the building directory app to share details of where everything is through our digital signage screens. The best part? If a room changes, you can update the screen easily unlike your static signs. Here are some non-obvious benefits of wayfinding in retail.
Ever had a bad meeting room experience? Someone waiting awkwardly outside? Knocking before you’re finished to ask ‘how long’? Same. It’s why using small screens, iPads or tablets you have laying around is an awesome use of digital signage. We wrote more about how to set this up here.
If you work in an art gallery or somewhere you want to show off work, then digital signage is a great way to showcase photos, videos or actual designs of something special you’ve been working on.
With digital office displays, companies can create an inspiring team environment to promote the company, employees, and products and services in a consistent and uplifting way. Commercial grade signage solutions can clearly and effectively reinforce this messaging on a regular basis.
Like video walls and LCD signs, office displays are able to serve as informational resources for employees and visitors. These signs can prominently display the company name and logo, spotlight the business location and surrounding property, and provide a professional, polished image for the company.
With LCD displays and video walls, companies can ensure that key employees and teams are updated at all times for specific system monitoring and updates. For instance, companies can use their signs to clearly show:
Digital signs provide real-time updates and solutions to maximize productivity and help motivate employees to achieve daily goals. Companies can also use digital office signs to promote their brand and company messaging. Regular displays of company goods and services can remind employees of the value and quality of the work they produce and remind them of past successes and accomplishments.
Digital office displays are able to promote the company culture by celebrating business milestones and achievements. For example, LCD displays can showcase business successes such as:
Also, video walls and LCD displays can promote corporate values and mission statements and highlight the history of the company along the way. When employees see their hard work celebrated regularly, they are far more likely to remain productive workers who want to contribute even more to the success and growth of the company.
Digital signage displays are great for celebrating employees on a regular basis, for both personal life events and work achievements. For example, LCD displays or video walls can be installed in shared spaces and break rooms to highlight employee events such as:
From a practical perspective, signs make the workplace more efficient by improving communication among departments. For example, interactive signage in lobbies and hallways can show meeting room availability and ongoing corporate events like employee training or HR sessions.
Inside conference rooms and meeting areas, interactive digital signs enhance company presentations and brainstorming sessions. Management and department heads are able to present clear and effective messaging in a way that captures attention and displays professionalism.
Companies can also inspire their workforce with signage solutions that highlight employee programs and incentives that benefit them individually and as a team. For example, LCD displays and video walls in common areas can be programmed to display:

For the better part of the last decade we have seen more and more Televisions being installed in general meeting spaces, ie, Huddle spaces, Meeting Rooms, Board rooms, and Auditoriums as well as for digital signage applications. This is mainly due to non Pro-AV companies supplying and installing displays to the corporate sector, which can be contributed to the lack of knowledge, and in most instances the pressure received from customers to supply Televisions in commercial applications seeing that they are so much cheaper than professional displays. Unfortunately money talks, and in most developing countries the cheapest quote gets the business. Having said that, it is our duty to inform our customers of the Pro"s and Con"s when considering a Television over a professional display, and not just follow the heard and provide a quote based on another quote.
The biggest difference between a Television and a Professional display is the amount of hours the panel can stay on, and in turn how long it will last the end user while maintaining its warranty. Televisions normally have an 8 hours a day warranty and professional displays typically 24 hours. The hours per day gap between these two panels are relatively big, and so is the price, which lead manufacturers to develop a Lite Commercial (Semi-Professional) display. This range of Lite Commercial displays have some functionality of the Professional Displays, in terms that it can be controlled through third party control systems over network or RS-232, it can be operational for 16 hours a day, and come in at a price point somewhere in between the price of a television and a professional display.
In order to highlight the different options available in the market effectively, I have decided to compare 3 different models with one another. These include a Television, a Lite Commercial display and a professional display. These displays have a lot more specifications than listed below. It is important to note that I am only focusing on the practicality of installing these displays in meeting spaces where they are generally only being used to display content received over HDMI (laptops, wireless receivers to allow for BYOD, AV switching equipment and video conferencing codecs).
Warranty – Consumer displays are warrantied for just that: consumer use. That means it is warrantied for a period of time, (usually one year) for use in your home. If you look closely at consumer warranties, you will almost always find somewhere that specifies the warranty is only valid for consumer use for a set number of hours per day, and in respect to the LG Television used for this example it is 8 hours. Some will say that the, “warranty is void if used in a commercial space”.
Most commercial displays (24/7 usage) typically carry a 3 years parts and labor warranty – with some having the ability to extend it to 5 years, and a few light commercial displays (16/7 usage) only covering 2 years.
Brightness – Consumer displays generally are designed to work well for lighting conditions that are controlled or somewhat controlled (dimmed as in lounge setting). Consumer Televisions usually fall in the range of 200-350 Nits, which is fine for viewing at home. However, in brightly lit conditions often found in boardrooms for example, higher brightness is desired because of lighting conditions. Commercial displays range in brightness depending on the series, ranging anywhere from 350-700 Nits. The brighter the better, especially if you also have video conferencing installed in the same room which requires a lot of ambient light.
Control– RS-232 or Ethernet (LAN control) are designed for control, automation and monitoring, and is usually not found in consumer displays, but allows for greater flexibility and more precise control of a display’s features and functions without having to use a remote (which uses batteries). Designed for easier integration into a controlled or automated system such as Extron and Crestron control environments. Through control automatic power on and off signals can be triggered based on occupancy of the room, or even based on the room bookings status which will allow the room to power up before a meeting is scheduled, to prepared for the meeting based on certain criteria.
Built in scheduling – Besides having more control options than a consumer TV, professional displays often have built-in or externally managed ways of scheduling and controlling the displays to turn on or off on a schedule. Meeting attendees normally just pack up and go when a meeting has come to an end and very seldom do we see users turning off the electrical devices in the room. Televisions therefore run the risk of staying on over night and weekends which in turn void their warranty.
PC Sync – Consumer displays are usually designed to handle consumer video formats and limited PC resolutions, making image scaling and screen fit difficult or often impossible. Professional displays are designed to handle a wide range of multi-sync supported resolutions making it possible to properly size and fit the screen.
Screen/Glass – The screen itself is also a factor. Professional grade displays often has enhanced glass modules designed for long hours of operation, which are less sensitive to image retention issues. “True Professional displays use a commercial grade glass that has multiple layers allowing for 7/24/365 operation cycles.”
Lastly, taking all of the above into consideration one should also factor in the cost of downtime. If 6 people were to attend a meeting in a room where the display is broken, it will most probably take them on average about 10 minutes to find, book and star their meeting in another room. This equates to an average hourly rate of all the employees, and if it is an executive boardroom, this price is sure to go up substantially, and this is only for 1 meeting. It could take weeks before the television is replaced and in that time it would have wasted a lot of employees" time and in turn cost the company a lot of money. This should make the decision much easier.
So in conclusion, a Professional display is definitely recommended, but if you want to save some money then go with a Lite Commercial display, but remember to add the TV Licence cost to your Opex budget, together with about 10% of the display cost per annum.
Clarity Matrix combines an ultra-thin profile and unique tiling optimization features in an integrated, mission-critical system design. Clarity Matrix utilizes commercial-grade 46" & 55" LCD panels with breakthrough narrow-bezel characteristics resulting in just a 5.7mm pixel-to-pixel gap between images using the 55" model.
Clarity Matrix features the EasyAxis mounting system, designed to facilitate the thinnest profile LCD video wall in the market. The combination of the mount plus the Matrix LCD Modules “blade” design result in video walls that measure a mere 4.5 inches in depth, screen-to-wall, as opposed to other designs that require 60% more clearance. The LCD module"s EasyAxis adjustment cams facilitate precise 6-axis alignment, ensuring uniform, minimized image-to-image gap.
Once the Clarity Matrix LCD Video Wall is cabled together, a start-up utility allows the LCD modules to automatically discover their position in the wall and display the position within the wall on the front of the panel itself. This discovery process greatly reduces the complexity of configuration and is designed to be highly flexible in terms of physical cabling schemes. LCD module control can be accomplished via IR and on-screen menu or via RS-232 or LAN control software. The video wall supports Planar’s Big Picture Plus built-in processing which can scale a source across the entire video wall or any section chosen by the operator. For more complex configurations, the video wall can be driven by Planar’s Indisys™ image processing solution or any leading image processor or digital signage software solution.
Due to the streamlined design of the Matrix LCD modules, fewer repairs are required at the panel itself. When the panels do need to be accessed or removed, this can be accomplished without removing other panels in the wall. Starting at the top of the wall, panels can be pulled up and out into Service Mode, allowing the panel below to be accessed. Within each panel, the simple interface board can be disconnected and replaced using thumbscrews with access from either the front or the back of the wall. Panels can also be completely removed and replaced very quickly. The panels weigh less than typical LCD displays, are more easily handled, and produce no noise.
The rack-mount video processing and power supply units each support 4 LCD modules, incorporate their own cooling and make configuration, maintenance and upgrades easily accessible and unobtrusive to the video wall itself. For even further reliability, the Matrix power supply unit includes an n+1 redundant design so if any one power supply in the unit fails, the remaining 4 will continue to power 4 LCD’s with uninterrupted operation.
LCD modules incorporate a single simple interface board designed to distribute off-board power, video and control signals to the LCD panel keeping depth, weight, heat and points of potential failure to an unprecedented minimum.

Interestingly,54% of customers prefer video content. Why maximize your return on investment and captivate your audience with a video wall. A video wall consists of multiple screens tiled together and held by bezels to create a large screen. While one signage screen can captivate your audience and does feature videos, video walls provide a creative immersive experience gravitating attention towards the video.
Video wall technology has a great impact on companies in different industries. It’s an ideal communication tool to pass information in different environments like:Transport:Bus, train stations, and airports have video walls for advertising and sharing travel times and vessels. Additionally, they use these video walls to share emergency messages like evacuations.
Education:The education sector can use video walls to explore big data in detail. They can also use video walls to enhance collaboration and unite information through the shared visual platform.
Corporate:Businesses can invest in video walls and use them in visualization suites, meeting rooms, and waiting rooms. They can use the large screen display to display company announcements, recent performance, or welcome messages.
Emergency Services:Emergency centers can use video walls to share critical information in real-time. Thus, ensuring prompt responses and accurate responses to emergencies.
Retail:Forward-thinking entrepreneurs use video calls to welcome customers, advertise their brand, and share information. Video walls deliver interactive and engaging multimedia presentations, drawing attention to the business.
A larger display can serve different industries. So, irrespective of the industry your company operates in, a video wall is a necessary tool for the success of your business. Here are nine benefits of a video wall for your business.
Before digital displays came into play, businesses relied on projectors for large images. When using a projector, you need to focus on the lens. Moreover, you should ensure a perfect blend of edges between two images. Depending on what you need to display, you might need to use two projectors for adequate light on the wall.
Video walls are better. They use direct view technology whose output is a clear, high-quality image with high resolution on an LCD or LED screen. The clarity of images from digital displays and the interactive video walls demand attention from your customers and target audience.
Every business has a public space and control room. Sometimes, you need to display data to your employees and different information to your audience and customers. The video wall display is ideal for both internal and external communication.
