KTM MY RIDE: Taking Motorcycle Connectivity Places | KTM’s rider-friendly smartphone integration now adds on-screen navigation feature powered by dedicated KTM MY RIDE app.

KTM’s smartphone connectivity platform, KTM MY RIDE, is available on a large number of KTM street bikes, with the Phone and Music functions and turn-by-turn navigation and route planning, powered by a dedicated app.

Living in a connected world, KTM began introducing the possibility for users to connect their smartphones with the motorcycle in 2017. These features have been carefully designed to be intuitive to use and add to riding enjoyment, rather than distract from the road.

KTM MY RIDE with Music and Phone comes equipped for activation on the KTM 390 Duke, KTM 1290 Super Duke R, KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and KTM 1290 Super Adventure R models.

With a paired Bluetooth helmet headset, this connected function allows a KTM MY RIDE-equipped bike to take control of the smartphone’s music player to listen to while riding. Using the left handlebar-mounted menu switch, the rider can toggle between tracks on a playlist or music archive and control the volume, with the information of the track displayed on the bike’s TFT screen.

Sometimes on a long ride it is important not to miss a call. With the ease of pairing a smartphone to the bike with KTM MY RIDE, this function allows the rider to see the identification of incoming calls on the TFT display and, using the menu switch, accept or decline the call. As a safety measure, accessing the phone’s address book and making outgoing calls is not possible.

New for 2018, turn-by-turn navigation has been introduced for the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S & R, which comes as a standard feature on the bikes. Paired with the new KTM MY RIDE app (available for Android $8.99 and iOS, $7.99), visual guidance is transmitted via Bluetooth to the TFT display to show the pre-planned destination.

To save on mobile data use, maps can be downloaded for offline use; this also helps to create and save pre-planned routes. As KTM knows its Adventure riders like to stray from the beaten path, up to 128 waypoints can be added to a route when planning in order to create truly unique rides.

KTM MY RIDE Navigation is not only exclusive to those with 2018 machines as owners of 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure  S & R can also benefit by having the cost-free software upgrade installed and activated at an official KTM dealer.

For owners of the 2018 390 Duke, 1290 Super Duke R, 1290 Super Adventure S and 1290 Super Adventure R, the MY RIDE app will offer basic phone connectivity as well as music streaming. The app will let you connect your Bluetooth-enabled helmet to your motorcycle and your phone; you’ll be able to manage phone calls and play music through your bike’s hand controls, using the TFT dash to navigate. You cannot make outgoing calls—you can only accept or reject incoming calls.

This is the big deal behind the TFT dash systems that most manufacturers are moving towards. While having a flashy, high-tech speedo and tach doesn’t really do much to move the industry forward, the potential for integration with mobile devices allows manufacturers to add value down the road with very little difficulty.

But wait, there’s more! Along with the phone and music connectivity, owners of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R will also get turn-by-turn navigation functionality.  KTM is also offering the app interface as a free upgrade to owners of the 2017 versions of those bikes, which is a good gesture. We’ve seen another Euro manufacturer charging clients for a simple ECU reflash on a superbike, which has to be irritating to the customer after already paying top dollar for the bike only a few months previous …

I really really really hope that KTM does a complete overhaul on this app and get this right. It’s very frustrating that you pay 20K + on a motorcycle then you have to purchase the app separately which is not an issue but it is when you know the app can be better. I would like to see the app interface with the motorcycle faster and I would like to see the apps default settings change. For example the app is set to avoid the highway by default. I’m going to give it 2 stars for now bc I believe they can make this right and be in that 4-5 star range.

1. Display is very slow to update . Unlike using other gps mapping apps I can often go past a turning point or exit before the app updates that I was supposed to turn there (like if it’s without a few hundred feet of a previous turn)

2. Display on TFT sometimes hangs and doesn’t update without indication that it did - it’s like it looses Bluetooth connection but then suddenly will reconnect perhaps miles past a direction change.

5. for some reason KTM has chosen to use Highway names that don’t appear on signs rather than interstate or highway numbers (eg veterans highway or Ronald Reagan freeway)

Bought bike new in July last year , downloaded app and worked good for 1 day . Since then it no longer will connect to the bike. Says no bike listed. My phone is till connected , shows my battery and signal. Tried repairing , deleting app, deleting phone , restoring , new install and a whole new phone. App still will not connect to bike , still says no bikes listed. Stupid . $20k Motorcycle with GPS navigation as advertised and it doesn’t work . FALSE advertisement . Dealership says it’s a software issue with app developer. I have since contacted an attorney since KTM falsely advertised GPS Navigation which was the selling point of me buying this their product.

Buy the 1290 with the TFT display because it is a wonderful bike! Save your time and money and avoid the app. Among its many flaws, fully covered by all the reviews, let me add that the app will not stay running on my iPhone X. In the app’s map mode while driving the screen goes black as per my iPhone settings. Within the app and with settings there is no way to have the screen stay lit. Other maps offer of this setting choice but not KTM. As a result this app offers no value for navigating while driving the motorcycle. What a shame that such a great motorcycle company is willing to put out such a poor interface!

Purchased a brand new KTM Duke 390. One of the main reasons was the my ride navigation- so I could leave my phone in my pocket and not have it exposed. The app has never worked, and the dealer can’t figure it out either.

My phone says it’s connected, my bike says it’s connected, but the app fails to show this. As a result, I am unable to use directions when I travel. When I click app support on the apple App Store, it takes me to KTM’s FAQs in their website- which is not helpful at all. I feel ripped off. If I could give this app 0 stars I would.

Quick, head over to KTM.com, and check out the “Travel” bikes. What have we got here? A few 890 models, a 690 Enduro R (really, that’s a travel bike?), a couple of 1290s, and the . . . 390 Adventure?

Good news, then. The 390 has lean-sensitive ABS (Road and Offroad modes) and traction control (On or Off). It’s easy to switch between the electronic features, with an intuitive interface between the four-button array on the left handlebar and the TFT screen.

The 390 comes with the capability to integrate KTM’s MY RIDE app. This gives you a GPS readout on the TFT screen, as well as control over your phone’s music playback. I did not use this function, as I didn’t need it (had a Garmin GPS along with me already, and directly connected my phone to my Cardo intercom). However, it’s there and would be quite useful for many riders.

Obviously, adding a proper aluminum skidplate and handguards would have taken longer, same as adding hard side pannier racks. However, I didn’t need them on this trip; if I did need them, KTM’s Powerparts catalog has a selection, and companies like Rocky Mountain, SW-Motech, and others are quickly beefing up the aftermarket selection.

Of course styling is nothing without proper engineering. The clamp with which a navigation tower is mounted to the frame is like the foundation of a house. That’s where it’s all build upon, that has to be able to take the weight of the tower and navigation or rally equipment, it has to be able to withstand the forces put upon it when hammering down a rutted track, and do that day in day out. On the 790/890 there was an additional challenge: there is very limited room to create a decent footprint. The larger the footprint, the less stress per cm2 you put on the steering head tube.

And yet we saw clamps which are flimsy, clamps which looked anorexic and that in our opinion would have way too much flex, while others even fitted the tower to the original mounting points with a simple plate or two supposedly as a ‘reinforcement’. These long unsupported plates only causes vibration fractures and put even more stress on the OEM points, which are know to break anyway. Imagine what happens when you add extensive navigation or rally equipment to those same points, but now even less supported…

KTM has announced the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R, the rally-inspired middleweight, (dual-sport?) model featuring new suspension, bodywork and protection, reworked electronics including a “demo mode” and a fresh TFT digital display.

The 2022 KTM Adventure Rider Rally in the heart of the Idaho mountains was the launch venue for the “next level” KTM 890 Adventure R. With Chris Birch and Quinn Cody onboard to show off the capabilities, it seemed a fitting location for the sportiest of KTM’s “travel” range to break cover.

KTM says it takes cues from their 450 Rally machines in the WP suspension package of fully adjustable WP XPLOR forks and a WP XPLOR PDS rear shock. The updated settings on the 890 R are “re-tuned” they say to provide improved feeling to ensure riders feel less fatigue at the end of a ride.

The rally influence stretches to the redesigned bodywork too with a new fairing, fuel tank, and cowling, improving aerodynamics and ergonomics, respectively improving protection from the elements and agility KTM say.

A fresh 5” TFT display for a start which is equipped with USB-C connecters and features a completely new appearance KTM say with coloured pictograms and intuitive graphics that allow easier navigation through the menus.

The upgrades also include a “turn-by-turn plus navigation system” that lets the rider select destinations from their last selections. A new call-out function also allows a favourites call option, with a maximum of 10 numbers, or the option to call one of the 10 last numbers called.

KTM has also introduced the next generation of ABS control unit top the ’23 890 Adventure R which takes readings from a 6D sensor — which continually informs the CMU on the angle, pitch, speed and general behaviour of the motorcycle.

KTM has also given the new 890 R a “demo mode” which lets riders try out all the specs and electronic options for the first 1,500 kilometres. The optional extras aren’t standard you see so this lets you try before you buy and then your choices can be dialled in by the dealer.

When it comes to high-powered naked bikes, say, those over 1,000 cc, the Indian FTR line stands alone as the only US-made models available on the market. It’s a fact that the Minneapolis-based manufacturer is more than proud of as it takes the fight to Europe’s BMW S 1000 R, KTM 1290 Super Duke R and such motorcycles from Japan as the Yamaha MT-10 and Suzuki GSX-S1000.

The FTR made quite a name for itself in the premiere of the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan race series in 2022, as Indian’s team rider Tyler O’Hara bested KTM’s Andy DiBrino in a final shootout at Laguna Seca for the championship. We’re looking forward to our own saddle time in the new FTR Sport come February.
