The new dynamic S60 design, with its purposeful, dynamic appearance, accentuates the car"s sporting nature. The sporty feel is emphasised by new, comfortable sport seats. The new S60 offers an extended wheel choice with a variety of designs that increase the personalisation possibilities for customers. To enhance the visual appeal of the car, it is now possible to specify the S60 with expressive 19-inch wheels and keep the same profile height as 18-inch ones, without compromising comfort.
Scandinavian design is exemplified by beautiful, simple shapes and surfaces with any unnecessary clutter removed. This is evident in the redesigned S60 interior and exterior. Inside, the attention to detail, the authentic materials - such as wood and leather - and the easy-to-use controls contribute to the in-command driving experience.There are upgrades such as new upholstery colours and a new headliner.
Supportive yet comfortable seats that ensure a fresh and relaxed arrival after the longest of journeys have been one of Volvo strengths for decades. There are several other examples of the attention to detail in the new S60. The previously visible washer nozzles have been relocated out of sight under the bonnet.
The S60 R-Design features a unique face with a redesigned, dynamic, expressive nose. The frameless Tech Matte Black grille has high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal and a refined R-Design emblem. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes. The R-Design version is now available with all-new 19" Ixion II wheels.
The new sport seat comes as standard in the S60 R-Design. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. The embroidered R-design logo with a blue ‘R" confirms the sporty aura.
The S60 buyer has a choice of four chassis types - Touring, Dynamic, Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) and Lower Sport Chassis, previously only available on the R-Design version.
The new T6 Drive-E engine has an output of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features a class-leading combination of a compressor and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end gives the engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 6.4 l/100 km (149 g/km) in the S60.
The new four-cylinder Drive-E engine T5 has 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 5.9 l/100 km (137 g/km) in the S60. Furthermore, there is a 1.6-litre GTDi engine available in two versions: T4 with 180 hp and T3 with 150 hp. Fuel consumption is down to 5.5 l/100 km in the S60 T3 with manual gearbox. This corresponds to CO2 emissions at 129 g/km. The S60 with the 1.6-litre GTDi engine T4 or T3 and automatic gearbox now offers fuel consumption at 6.8 l/100 km (159 g/km).
Fuel consumption in an S60 with manual gearbox is down to a class-leading 3.8 l/100 km, translating into CO2 emissions at 99 g/km. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 4.1 l/100 km (107 g/km).
The automatic D3 (136 hp) version of the new Volvo S60 now comes with fuel consumption at 4.8 l/100 km (126 g/km). The figures with the manual gearbox are 4.3 l/100 km (114 g/km).
The D2 version of the S60 features a 1.6-litre diesel engine. The engine produces 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque. The D2 engine with a manual gearbox comes with fuel consumption at 3.9 l/100 km (EU Combined), corresponding to CO2 emissions at 103 g/km. The corresponding figures for the automatic version are 4.1 l/100 km (107 g/km).
The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the all-new connected infotainment system, which is introduced in the S60, V60 and XC60 during the second half of 2013. It features a refreshed HMI with a number of innovative functions, such as:
The Adaptive Digital Display, which debuted in the all-new V40, uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance.
The default mode Elegance has a classic look and layout. The Ecomode has a green colour theme and is designed to encourage and reward a fuel-efficient driving style. Performance features red illumination, and a rev scale instead of the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions.
New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has now made it possible to extend Volvo Cars" present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.
The S60 features an upgraded City Safety system. This system is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops - or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.
The S60 offers the enhanced Blind Sport Information System (BLIS), which is radar-based. The technology can now also monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 m behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides.
Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.
The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.
A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.
Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.

The Volvo S60 was released in 2000 (2001 model year) being the company"s new generation sports sedan. The S60 came standard with Volvo"s own radio unit, the HU-613, the HU-803 and was later upgraded to the HU-650 and an optional extra HU-850 unit. The HU-850 unit features a 225 or 335-watt power output (depending on optional external amplifier) with three presets: 2CH, 3CH and Dolby Digital Pro Logic II Surround Sound. The S60 was refreshed in 2005. The exterior was updated with body-colored side moldings and bumpers with chrome linings, as well as new headlamps replacing the original with black housing, with optional HID headlights. The interior received some updates as well, with new seats, trim, and an updated center console. The S60 went through a final facelift in 2008 with full body-colored bumper and door inserts and larger emblem in the front and larger spaced out "V-O-L-V-O" letters in the rear. The interior featured a new pattern upholstery which differs from its original pattern.
Police specification models came about through Volvo"s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. First introduced in 2004, Volvo"s S60 R used a Haldex computer controlled all-wheel-drive system mated to a 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) / 400 N⋅m (300 lbf⋅ft) inline-5 which sends 95 percent of the torque to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and can send up to 70 percent to the rear wheels as necessary.manual transmission, or an available 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m) torque in 1st and 2nd gears. The 2006–2007 models came with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission (which was no longer torque-restricted).
Other aspects which set the R apart from standard S60s were the large Brembo front and rear four-piston brakes, 18-inch 5-spoke "Pegasus" wheels (available as an upgrade to the standard 17-inch wheels of the same design), blue faced "R" gauges, standard HID headlights, as well as the Four-C suspension system.
Semi-active suspension with Four-C (a short name for "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept") allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. "Comfort" attempts to soften the car over bumps, while "Advanced" firms the suspension considerably and gives more aggressive throttle response - a setting Volvo implies is for use on the race track. This is accomplished through a drive by wire throttle, allowing the same pedal travel to result in different performance when the appropriate mode is selected,Ohlins Racing AB and shock absorber manufacturer Monroe for the self-adjusting shock absorbers.
The small trunk lid spoiler that was standard on the S60 R created a 20% increased downforce at the rear wheels at high speeds compared to the standard S60s. The S60 Rs have a 0.29 Drag coefficient, compared to the standard S60"s 0.28, due to the larger lower front bumper spoiler to support the secondary intercooler.
Another Volvo factory option for only the S60 R was a body kit which included front bumper splitters, side skirts and a rear valance, color matched to the body. The body kit was only available with certain body colors and in certain markets.

The engine range of the S60 and V60 comprises four petrol engines and three diesels. The engines available are the T3, T4, T5 and T6 petrol engines and D3, D5 and 1.6D DRIVe diesel engines, the latter of which has Stop Start Technology to increase the efficiency of the engine. The 2.4-litre D5 plug-in hybrid version, fitted with a five-cylinder diesel engine and a 50 kW electric motor, was scheduled for sale in Europe by November 2012.
The Volvo S60 and V60 come with Volvo"s City Safety system as standard, which is the same system fitted to its sister the XC60. This system stops the car in the event of impending collision in "City Traffic" below 19 mph (31 km/h). Also, a new safety feature named "Pedestrian Detection" (available on both the V60 and S60) detects people in front of the car and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time. The new sedan shows off Volvo"s completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. It rides on the same platform as the XC60. The goal of this new design was to target younger demographics.
In 2013, the T5 engine was revamped before the launch of the Drive-E arrival. Among the tweaks to the T5 power plant is a boost in engine compression to 9.5:1 from 9.0, engine torque peaks at 4200 rpm and engine management changes provide faster gear changes and upshifts when the 6-speed automatic gearbox is in the sport mode. Output remains the same over 2012 at 250 bhp (186 kW; 253 PS) and 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque, although there is a provision for overboost from the turbo which bumps the torque number to 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m). The changes in compression ratio helps the S60 T5 deliver 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) extra in the city and combined cycle. Front-drive versions are rated at 21 mpg‑US (8.9 km/L) city/30 mpg‑US (13 km/L) highway for a combined of 24 mpg‑US (10 km/L), while the AWD model is 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) less across the board. Volvo also says the T5 AWD is good for a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) sprint of 6.6 seconds, while the front-drive version is 0.2 seconds quicker.
Changes include all-new exterior panels from the A-pillars forward including a new hood, front fenders and fascia; a wider grille with a larger Ironmark is flanked by new headlights while a larger, wider lower front intake gains bright accents and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights; new integrated exhaust pipes at rear, a new Adaptive Digital TFT Display instrument cluster for select models (R-Design versions include unique blue instrument dials), new paddle shifters on T6 AWD and R-Design models (optional on T5), Advanced Quick Shift (AQS) option on all T6 engines and activated when the transmission is set to sport mode or when using paddle shifters, IntelliSafe with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake and Cross Traffic Alert became part of the Technology Package, a new radar-based Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car, Cross Traffic Alert with radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space.
North America models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles in late 2013. Early models include S60 T5 (base, Premier, Premier Plus, Platinum), T6 (AWD, Premier Plus, Platinum, R-Design AWD, RD Platinum).
The S60L, also marketed as S60 Inscription, is the top-of-the-line, long wheelbase model of the S60. The Volvo S60L PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) concept car was unveiled at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.Volvo Cars announced that the S60L PPHEV will be manufactured at the Chengdu plant and is scheduled to be launched in China in the first half of 2015.
The S60L PPHEV shares the same electric-drive technology as the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, but instead of the diesel engine of the V60, the S60L PPHEV has a 2-liter, four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engine from Volvo Cars’ new Drive-E engine family. The 50 kW (67 hp) electric motor is powered by an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an all-electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi). The petrol-powered engine produces 177 kW (237 hp) and 350 N·m (258 lb-ft) of torque. The driver can select via three buttons among three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In the default hybrid mode, the CO2 emissions are about 50 g/km, corresponding to a fuel consumption of 2.0 L/100 km (140 mpg‑imp; 120 mpg‑US). By selecting Pure mode, the car runs in all-electric mode, and the Power mode combines the capabilities of the engine and motor to deliver 225 kW (302 hp), 550 N·m (405 lb-ft) of torque and 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 5.5 seconds.
Volvo unveiled the production model, the S60L T6 Twin Engine PHEV, at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. Sales of the S60L T6 PHEV, limited to the Chinese market, began on 22 April 2015. The production model has an all-electric range of 53 km (33 mi).
A new limited production model known as the S60 Cross Country saw a limited American release in the autumn of 2015 (as it was for the 2015 model year in Europe), with each dealership only getting one car. This variant is similar to the Volvo V60 Cross Country, as it is a raised sedan variant of the S60. Limited to about 500 units from 2016 to 2017.
The Volvo S60 Polestar performance concept is a version of the Volvo S60 T6 AWD with a Volvo T6 inline six (B6304T4) engine rated at 508 PS (374 kW; 501 hp) at 6500 rpm and 575 N⋅m (424 lb⋅ft) of torque at 5500 rpm. It features a modified cylinder head and combustion chambers, modified inlet manifold and air intake, special manufactured connecting rods, Garrett 3171 turbocharger, Ferrita 3.5" stainless steel exhaust system, reinforced M66C (close ratio) manual 6-speed gear box, Haldex E-LSD in rear, Haldex Gen4 XWD, 265/30R19 tires, 9.5×19-inch Polestar Rims, chassis lowered by 30 mm (1.2 in), Öhlins 3-way shock absorbers, reinforced anti-roll bars in the front and rear, increased track width by 20 mm (0.79 in) in the front and 40 mm (1.6 in) in the rear, Polestar-tuned EHPAS steering, stabilising X-members (front and rear), modified control-arms with uniballs in the front and rear, reinforced bushings in sub-frame and control-arms, modified engine mounts, 380 mm ventilated front brake discs with Polestar-Brembo 6 piston calipers, 302 mm (11.9 in) ventilated discs rear brake discs with Polestar-Volvo calipers, brake cooling air intakes from front, lowered front splitter and larger rear spoiler to reduce high speed lift, carbon fibre diffuser, body 20 mm (0.79 in) widened in the front and rear, Polestar designed seats with increased support, Alcantara on all functional areas (steering wheel, gear knob, and seats) to ensure maximum grip and a lowered centre console for optimised gear-lever ergonomics.
The 2013 Volvo S60 Polestar is a limited (50 units) version of the Volvo S60 T6 AWD for the Australian market. It is based on the S60 Polestar performance concept and features an inline 6 engine rated at 258 kW (346 hp; 351 PS) and 508 N⋅m (375 lb⋅ft) of torque. It includes a new BorgWarner turbo, new intercooler, a 2.5 in (64 mm) stainless full-flow exhaust system with 3.5 in (89 mm) tail pipes, Polestar Öhlins 2-way adjustable shock absorbers, upgraded springs (60N/mm front, 65N/mm rear. (80% stiffer than stock)), upgraded stabilizers in the front and rear, upgraded rear tie blades, upgraded top mount in the front and rear, upgraded toe link arms in the rear, strut brace with carbon fibre reinforcement, Michelin Pilot Super Sport 235/40R19 tires, 8x19-inch ET51 bespoke Polestar rims, Polestar-tuned AWF21 six-speed automatic gearbox with a launch control system, a Polestar-tuned Haldex 4WD system, modified transmission software for faster shifts and launch control, modified AWD software for more rear torque, front 336x29 mm ventilated brake discs with Jurid 958 performance brake pads, rear 302x22 mm ventilated brake discs with HP2000 Brembo performance brake pads, new Polestar front splitter corners, new Polestar rear spoiler, new Polestar diffuser, Polestar door trims, Polestar badging on the front grille, boot and engine cover, Polestar shift knob, Polestar limited edition plate on the door sills and steering wheel and black outside mirror covers. The 2014 S60 Polestar was offered in Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. Based on the S60 Polestar Concept car and the Australian S60 Polestar, it includes a Polestar Öhlins shock absorber system Polestar 8×20-inch ET53 bespoke rims with 245/35R20 tyres, a new twin-scroll BorgWarner turbo with new intercooler, 2.5 in (64 mm) stainless full-flow exhaust system with 3.5 in (89 mm) tail pipes, AWF21 automatic gearbox with paddle shift system, Polestar transmission calibration for faster gearshifts, launch control and curve-hold functionality; Polestar Haldex calibration for more rear torque dynamic distribution, Polestar calibrated stability control system, front 371 mm × 32 mm (14.6 in × 1.3 in) ventilated and floating brake discs with Polestar/Brembo 6 piston brake calipers, rear 302 mm × 22 mm (11.89 in × 0.87 in) ventilated brake disc. Delivery was set to begin in June 2014 to the local markets.
The 2015 S60 Polestar"s 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder produces 350 PS (260 kW; 350 hp) and 500 N⋅m (370 lb⋅ft) of torque, an additional 20 hp (15 kW; 20 PS) and 20 N⋅m (15 lb⋅ft) more torque compared to the same engine in the S60 R-Design. This is developed by way of massaged engine management software, a stainless exhaust with 64-millimetre (2.5 in) pipes, new twin-scroll BorgWarner turbochargers and new intercooler. Polestar also did work to the transmission with new calibration for quicker gearshifts and launch control capabilities. The Haldex four-wheel-drive system also has Polestar tuning for more rear torque distribution, and the stability control system has been massaged. The chassis is firmer with a suspension that features Öhlins shock absorbers with 80 percent stiffer springs sitting on 20-inch wheels that would normally come wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires from the factory. Brakes get a nice upgrade with 370-millimetre (14.6 in) front discs (replacing 340-millimetre [13.2 in] ones on the R-Design) with six-piston Brembo calipers and 300-millimetre (11.8 in)-inch rear discs. Visual changes include new front and rear splitters, rear spoiler and diffuser. Inside there"s a thick-rimmed steering wheel and upgraded seats with suede inserts, suede door inserts and blue accent stitching throughout. According to Volvo, it has a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) time of 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 249 km/h (155 mph), up from 210 km/h (130 mph).
Production began in September 2018 in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The third generation of the Volvo S60 is the first Volvo manufactured in the United States.
The S60 comes with two engine options: the T5, which features a turbocharged mild hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder sending 252 hp (188 kW; 255 PS) to the front wheels (or all four wheels in some markets as an option) and the T8, a performance-oriented plug-in hybrid which combines a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder and an electric motor at the rear, sending a combined 400 hp (300 kW; 410 PS) to all four wheels.
Standard gear on all S60s includes an improved City Safety collision avoidance system based on Volvo"s Vision 2020. The system can now help the driver do an evasive maneuver and can detect and mitigate oncoming vehicles at intersections.
On 14 and 15 October 2000, the first-generation S60 T5 broke 18 British land speed records (including the highest average speed over a 24-hour period) for a Production Car class D (2000-3000cc) at 135.10 miles per hour (217.42 km/h) at the Millbrook Proving Ground, in Bedfordshire, UK. A joint project by Volvo and Prodrive and covered by ITV"s Driven and
Volvo regularly entered the S60 in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, where it finished 2nd in the drivers" championship twice and won the manufacturers" title once. The S60 continued to be raced after the formation of the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship, a merger of the Swedish and Danish touring car championships. Thed Björk won three consecutive titles from 2013 to 2015, and Rikard Göransson won the championship in 2016, driving an S60 prepared by Polestar Racing.
From 2002 to 2007 there was an S60 one-make racing series as a support series to the Swedish Touring Car Championship known as the S60 Challenge Cup, using 26 factory-modified S60s.
The first generation S60 made its competitive debut in 2006, racing in the Speed World Challenge GT class. The second-generation model was introduced for the 2009 season. In 2010, its programme was expanded to include the SCAA Pro Racing World Challenge, where it won both the drivers" championship, for factory driver Randy Pobst, his fourth, and manufacturers" championships in the GT class. The programme was expanded again in 2011 to include the Pirelli World Challenge.
Volvo competed in the V8 Supercars Championship with two rear wheel drive V8 B8444S powered S60s between 2014 and 2016 with Garry Rogers Motorsport highlighted by a debut 2nd place at the Adelaide 500, a last second overtake to steal a race win at the Phillip Island Circuit, and third for Scott McLaughlin in the 2016 series driver standings.

Business models include an upgrade to Sensus connect with a 7-inch colour display, internet browser and access to web apps, plus sat-nav and HDD music storage – but you can buy the package as an option on other models. There’s an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon version too, with DVD player, surround sound and 650 Watts.
While the cabin of the Volvo S60 is a pleasant place to be thanks to its comfortable seats and airy driving environment, some of the switchgear on the dash is confusingly laid out.
Some drivers will find it tricky to find a natural driving position in the S60 too as, bizarrely, the seat tilts when it raises and lowers. The centre armrest also obstructs gearchanges, which is annoying and seems ill-considered.
Sadly, despite its pleasant atmosphere, the Volvo S60 isn"t the most practical car in the compact executive class - passengers in the back get slightly less space than in an Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series, and headroom could be a problem for taller passengers.
SINGAPORE –Volvo’s revamped its entire family with a full model line-up wide facelift, including the S60 sedan, V60 station wagon, XC60 sport utility vehicle (SUV) and S80 big sedan all getting a nip-tuck. For the first three, it’s a case of the usual mid-life refresh, the S60,V60 and XC60 all being released from 2009-2011 and being in line for the standard going-over (see box).
We tested the face-lifted XC60 last issue and came away quite pleased with the results. The XC60 is the car which helped Volvo continue – the XC90 was its best-selling model and a huge lifeline for the company, the XC60 inherited that mantle and extended it, and brought the company into more-than-just-survival mode (look at Saab for the flipside of how it could have gone). Then the S60 sedan came along in 2010 and made a huge splash with the almost-German combination of excellent handling, a punchy turbo engine but executed with Swedish style and simplicity.
In terms of platform and technology, Volvo’s now branching out on its own, leaving its Ford past behind and as a result of a future secured by current owner Geely. But that was a future only recently secured, so the main question remains: is the facelifted S60 good enough to stand two or three years more on the market?
That itself is something of a trick question since the S60 has quietly received some improvements already – the introduction of the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine for example, as well as the replacement of the old five-speed conventional automatic gearbox for a six-speed dual-clutch unit.
Volvo claims there’s been around 3,000 changes in total across all the facelift models. In the S60’s case, you won’t mistake the old and new cars, unless you view the new one from dead perpendicular, so different is the front end. Like the XC60 it begins with a reshaped bonnet that has a little more clam to it (i.e. it’s more pronounced, with edges) and the windscreen washer nozzles are hidden away too. It leads down to the re-designed grille and lights (which are active xenon units), which now have LED DRLs placed further below, unlike between the headlight unit and grille, previously. Astride that is the new lower lip spoiler and air intake which Volvo dubs ‘the moustache’.
The test car pictured comes with the cost optional exterior styling kit ($4,950), which ads the front bumper bar, a rear skid plate and side plates with brown accents (Volvo dubs this ‘Terra Bronze’, with two other colours to choose ‘Iron Stone’ and ‘Silver’). It lends the car a distinct identity and a nod to Volvo’s penchant for colour contrast bodywork, like on the old C30 three-door hatch, especially if you choose the matching wheels in the same colour ($7,700).
The S60’s only sold here in D2 (1.6-litre turbodiesel) and T4 models, foregoing the T5 (2.0 turbo, 240bhp) and T6 (3.0 inline six turbo, 304bhp) models other markets get. But it does make sense, since a lighter front end seems to pay dividends for the S60 T4.
Like its brethren, and the new V40 hatchback, the key difference on the inside is the redesigned instrument cluster with an 8.0-inch adaptive TFT display which is delightfully lag-free, crisp and customisable, and there’s also re-designed sport seats. Space in the rear is getting to be relatively less, though, especially when compared to executive sedan rivals who’ve made it a priority, like the new Lexus IS and BMW 3 Series.
Indeed, in terms of price the S60 is edging rather close to them too, at close to $200,000 for a Volvo executive sedan. Admittedly the badge-boast for that kind of money is less than with other luxury brands (Volvo’s more evenly matched with Volkswagen, really) but the Swedish brand still has its safety trump card to play, with an envious load-out of air-bags (curtain and knee), vault-like reinforced body (side and whiplash protection) plus new systems to keep everyone around you safe – not only is City Safety still standard, you can now option a Pedestrian Airbag, Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection and Road Sign Information systems. The only other car with an equivalent to the former is the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, to give you an example.
So the S60 remains a special Swede – it still looks unique (and you can choose to make it more so) and is still super safe, but with solid dynamic behaviour as before. As with the XC60 we tested last issue, it might not be as sporty as some of its upmarket German rivals, but its inherent difference and appeal remain very much intact. As will you, if you cross the road in front of one without looking.
de facelift leaves the question of the S80 and XC90. The S80 is already seven years old, and is going to continue for a few years more, but of course Volvo execs quizzed on the subject couldn’t say much about its inevitable replacement. Likely its research and development budget has been set aside for the most important Volvo – the XC90 – which is widely expected to debut in its second-generation form next year, possibly appearing in concept form at the Frankfurt show.
That model will run on Volvo’s all-new Scalable Platform Architecture and be powered by a novel drivetrain technology which the company recently announced, called ‘Drive-E’, and be made up simply by two four-cylinder engines, one direct-injetction gasoline and one common-rail diesel. Volvo doesn’t mention capacity just yet, but it’s possible the engines could be stroked-out to provide more capacity. It does confirm, however, that ‘several levels of turbocharging’ will cover the entire range. The next-gen S60, V60 and XC60, for example, will still get a 181bhp D4 diesel, 245bhp T4 gasoline and 306bhp T5 gasoline – it’s also obvious Volvo is benchmarking BMW here, with its 245bhp 328i and 306bhp 335i. We say it’s good to aim high!
Mated to the new engine is an eight-speed gearbox, likely to be from ZF’s brilliant family (see our feature this issue for more info) currently starring in everything from the BMW 1 Series to the Audi A8. Volvo says the gasoline engine will use ‘twin charging’, like VW’s 1.4 TFSI engine in the Mark 6 Golf Sport, combining a supercharger for low end and turbocharger for high-end boost. Provisions for electrification have also been made, with the engines designed to include a motor generator and centrally-mounted battery packs.
The first generation (2000–2009)S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a sports version called S60 R.ECC concept car and the S80.

The Volvo V60 D5 is a very good car. It"s comfortable, safe, smart, well-appointed and reasonably economical, yet could never be described as remarkable. Now Volvo UK has just launched the D6, the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid (the D6 moniker refers to the D5 engine plus one motor).
Think plug-in-hybrid and you probably think of an infuriating advertisement about the plural of Prius. It"s a concept that I confess I hadn’t exactly grasped, and seemed to me like another Cygnet type exercise with the main aim of massaging manufacturers" carbon figures. After all, what’s the point of a car which can do a mere three miles on pure electric? And having driven cars such as the slightly offensive Chevrolet Volt, I am not a fan of hybrids. So, another Volvo, but with a plug. Big deal.
We arrive at Edinburgh airport late for our appointment. Very late. It"s freezing, wet and sludgy. We"re met by the beaming Volvo team who assure us that it"s not a problem. There are two V60s waiting and we"re given a choice. They"re identical so we choose the closest. The car boasts several distinguishing features: a glossy black grille and front spoiler, aerodynamic wheels with composite inserts, badging on the front wings and littering the tailgate, twin integrated tailpipes and a particularly ugly fuel flap on the front nearside wing hiding the charging point.
The interior is lightly redesigned with new inlays, detailing and lighting. The front seats allow for increased rear legroom and the rear seats offer a 40/20/40 split for added convenience. The infotainment system features a 7” screen with simple, logical controls beneath. The instrument panel is Volvo’s new active TFT display (more of which later). The only shortcoming is the decrease in boot space caused by the large battery pack. The floor is some 6cm higher which reduces load space from an already small 470 litres to a measly 310 litres.
We select Pure and cruise silently out of the car park. We"ve become accustomed to electric propulsion in smaller cars, however it"s still something of a mindbender in a large real-life car like the Volvo. It’s been no simple pimp my ride transformation either, minute details had to be considered such as the noise of fuel sloshing in the tank when the car comes silently to a stop, the traction control had to be completely re-written to cope with the motor’s input and an enormous amount of work was undertaken to ensure the transition from electric to diesel is seamless: no mean feat with a large diesel engine, yet it"s been implemented perfectly.
The TFT instrumentation is brilliant. A power gauge on the right shows how much power is being drawn (effectively how far down on the throttle your foot is) and the point at which the engine will cut in. It"s surprisingly hard to invoke it in Pure mode and the motor can realistically take the car through to 78mph on electric only. The dashboard has three display modes - Eco, Elegance and Performance. Eco is well suited to Pure and Hybrid modes, and Performance is more relevant to Power mode: the blue dash accenting changes to red and the central speedo changes to a rev counter with a digital speedo inside. The execution of the instrumentation is excellent: attractive graphics, smooth animations and logical design which reduces the complexities of the car to simple, straightforward information.
The car features an astonishing amount of technology which we can’t even begin to fully cover in this article. Just a couple of examples are ‘Volvo On Call’ which can contact emergency services, inform the driver by text of the car’s charging status or if it’s moving without authorisation, or allow the driver to interact with the car through a mobile app, and Preconditioning, which allows the car to be heated or cooled before driving, either by timer or in real time through the app. All Volvo’s standard safety equipment is present, too, such as city safety, pedestrian and cycle sensing and cross traffic sensing, and monitoring of the charging which can reduce or even halt charging if the intelligent cable senses a problem such as overheating. And, incidentally, the car has the highest ever Euro NCAP score for an electrified car, with particular attention paid to protection of the battery pack during rear impacts.
The second stage of the journey is to Glasgow. We set off in Hybrid mode and the engine immediately makes itself known. I still occasionally wake up sweating in the middle of the night with memories of the ungodly noise of the Volt (N.B. petrol) engine cutting in like a fume spewing generator, completely uncalled for and without any logic whatsoever. The Volvo engine is incredibly refined and, even when you can hear it, sounds great. The starting is undertaken by the ‘Integrated Starter Generator’ which replaces both the starter and the alternator, and also charges the 400V battery to a limited extent.
The price of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid might come as something of a surprise: at £43,775 after the £5,000 government grant, it"s far from cheap. But then the battery pack alone costs Volvo £8500 which goes a long way to explaining the premium over the standard models. And at just under £10,000 more than the Vauxhall Ampera it still seems a positive bargain.
I find it hard to express how much I liked this car. The conception, build quality and finish are all to Volvo"s typically high standard and the logic with which the technology is implemented and then translated to the driver is superb. The car is capable of running as a zero emission vehicle for 31 miles, a figure Volvo have calculated to cater for 75% of daily commutes. In hybrid mode, it returns just 48g/km CO2 which means it has free tax as well as being remarkably efficient. Yet in Power mode it"s Volvo"s fastest accelerating car bar none, dispensing 0-62 in 6.1 seconds, topping out at 143mph, capable of a (theoretical) 155mpg, and a worthy successor to any T5R of the past. And then some. I would go as far as saying this is the best green car I"ve ever driven.
Every car on the road today is a compromise in some way, but if you want to do your bit for the environment during the week yet still have a high-performance, dynamic, fun, yet practical car when the mood takes you, at this price there really is no other option, especially not one which takes one parking space, one (free) tax disc and one insurance policy. Think of a manufacturer which is a vanguard in the electric car field, and it would most likely be Renault, Nissan or Toyota, certainly not Volvo. But this (as well as the electric C30) can be seen as a clear statement of their intentions with alternative fuel, moreover one which instantly leads the field.
Our advice: buy one. Volvo have only allocated 150 cars to the UK this year which unlike our test car will be the facelifted 2014 model available from May 2013, so, like Volvo, you’d better make it quick.
