Mitsubishi Electric expects its new transflective module to meet increasing demands for a TFT-LCD that offers superior visibility outdoors, extended battery life, low heat radiation, and is both thin and lightweight.
TOKYO, October 3, 2019 - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today the launch of a 12.1-inch WXGA TFT-LCD module designed for use in harsh outdoor environments, such as on construction sites and in heavy-duty vehicles, as well as in industrial applications and in agricultural use.

On June 15, Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced on its official website that Melco Display Technology Inc. (MDTI), its subsidiary, will end theTFT LCD modules(panel) in June 2022 due to increased competition and unprofitability. Production and termination of LCD production business.
The Mitsubishi Electric announcement pointed out that MDTI is currently mainly engaged in the research, development, manufacturing and sales of small and medium-sized LCD panels for electronic products/vehicles. However, due to the intensified price competition of overseas manufacturers such as China and beyond expectations, it is difficult to make profits in LCD panel production. In this case, it may be difficult to continue to maintain, so it is decided to end production and withdraw from the LCD business.
Mitsubishi Electric started mass production of LCD panels in 1996. The planned liquidation of the LCD business (excluding LCD TVs) in 2019 has revenues of approximately 28.5 billion yen (1.88 billion yuan). Mitsubishi Electric’s current LCD panels are purchased through external companies. After the above-mentioned small and medium-sized LCD panels are discontinued, the small and medium-sized panels required for Mitsubishi Electric’s own products will also be purchased from external companies.
Mitsubishi Electric is not the first company to withdraw from the LCD panel market. In November 2019, Panasonic said that its subsidiary Panasonic Liquid Crystal Display (PLD), which is in charge of the LCD panel production business, will end its LCD panel production business in 2021 due to the participation of Chinese panel "players" in the dilution of product profits.
With new, higher-generation TFT LCD fabs set to ramp up in China, Chinese TFT LCD suppliers are indicating expanded production plans. As a result, China is expected to surpass Japan in large-area TFT LCD panel production in Q2/11, reports DisplaySearch.
Large-area TFT LCD panel production by Chinese makers, including mini-note, tablet PC, notebook, monitor, and TV applications, was 2.7 million units per month in Q1’11, compared to 3.2 million units per month from Japanese makers. However, China will increase to 3.4M units in Q2’11, while Japan is expected to fall to 2.3M units. China is also expected to be higher than Japan in unit production from Q3’11 to Q1’12.
“Korean makers continue to be the leader in large-area TFT LCD production, accounting for approximately half of global output, followed by Taiwanese makers, which account for about 40%,” noted Shawn Lee, Senior Analyst for DisplaySearch, and the author of the Quarterly Large-Area Production Strategy Report. “However, the likelihood that China will pass Japan may indicate the beginning of a phase in which China plays a more important role in the global flat panel display industry,” Lee continued.
The push by Chinese panel makers may influence the supply/demand balance, panel prices, panel roadmaps and value chain relationships. Meanwhile, Japanese manufacturers are starting to look for alternative options to sustain their TFT LCD businesses, such as outsourcing, technology licensing, shifting to small medium size businesses, as well as joint ventures, mergers, and consolidations.
Chinese TFT LCD makers still lag behind counterparts in Korea, Taiwan and Japan in new technology implementation. However, several new production strategies are being pursued:
- Sharp, LG Display and other panel makers will start producing tablet PC panels in Gen 8 using advanced array and thin glass technologies. In 2011, 10% of Gen 8 capacity is being allocated to produce tablet PC panels.
- While Korean and Japanese panel makers like Samsung, LG Display and Sharp are allocating some of their Gen 8 capacity to non-TV applications, Taiwanese Gen 8 owners AUO and Chimei Innolux are allocating 100% of their lines to LCD TV applications.
Mitsubishi Electric’s industrial displays (TFT LCD modules) no longer will be included in the Optrex product offer. The same display products are offered by Mitsubishi’s own distribution network instead. Acal BFi Nordic AB and Hectronic AB, in cooperation, are members of that network and offer continuity for Nordic customers through sales, delivery and support for Mitsubishi displays. The change is effective immediately and it is a consequence of the acquisition by Kyocera Corporation of Optrex Corporation.
Mitsubishi Electric has sold industrial displays through the Optrex sales organization and with Optrex article numbers since April, 2002. The cooperation between Acal BFi Nordic and Hectronic AB for distribution secures deliveries and professional technical support, now and in the future, for existing and new customers of displays from Mitsubishi Electric in the Nordic countries.
“Hectronic’s knowledge in development of embedded computer platforms and system integration in combination with Acal BFi’s organization and infrastructure in logistics will mean increased possibilities to meet the demands from Nordic customers of industrial displays from Mitsubishi Electric,” says Masaki Kakizaki, Deputy Manager, TFT Marketing, Mitsubishi Electric Europe.
Mitsubishi Electric established an office in Europe in 2008 and since then has built the company’s own network for sales and support for industrial displays in Europe. In the beginning of 2012 Mitsubishi Electric signed an agreement for distribution through Acal BFi Nordic AB and Hectronic AB in the Nordic countries. Mitsubishi Electric will discontinue deliveries to Optrex from September 30, 2012 and onwards.
