LCDs are made in a glass substrate. For OLED, the substrate can also be plastic. The size of the substrates are specified in generations, with each generation using a larger substrate. For example, a 4th generation substrate is larger in size than a 3rd generation substrate. A larger substrate allows for more panels to be cut from a single substrate, or for larger panels to be made, akin to increasing wafer sizes in the semiconductor industry.

While talks about a possible tie-up between Hon Hai and Sharp fell through in 2012, the Taiwanese firm is still interested in buying all or part of the LCD unit, according to sources and Japanese media reports. Hon Hai has not commented on the reports.
INCJ was also considering teaming up with Japan Display IncT> to bail out Sharp, the person said. INCJ is the top shareholder of Japan Display, the world’s largest maker of liquid crystal displays for smartphones and tablets.
Sharp said in July it would spin off its LCD panel business, which supplies displays to smartphone and tablet manufacturers, and seek funding for it from outside.
Once among the top display suppliers to Apple Inc, Sharp has been pushed aside by the likes of LG Display and Japan Display as the U.S. device maker diversified its supply chain amid longstanding concerns over Sharp’s prospects.
In this article, we have summarized and characterized the suppliers of LED lighting technology in three distinct sets of companies. The first group represents manufacturers of LED chips, the semiconductor devices themselves. The second group represents manufacturers of packaging, which is defined here to be the housings or other assemblies which hold the semiconductor LEDs, provide associated electrical input wiring or harnesses, and include any needed mounting connections. Lastly, the article includes summaries of LED Lighting manufacturers who sell finished lighting units either wholesale or retails to businesses or consumers.
We"ve evaluated general LED suppliers in North America in Table 1. Table 2 and Table 3 rank companies in the two more specific categories. Some companies manufacture both chips and packages, and are mentioned in both Table 2 and 3.
The top 10 global lighting manufacturers for LED chips are summarized in Table 2 below, ranked in descending order of LED technology quality. Also shown in Table 2 is the country in which the manufacturer is headquartered, as well as revenue and market capitalization data for those companies where financial data was reported.
In eighth place is Edison Opto, based in Taiwan. Edison Opto’s product range includes SMD LED chips in all ranges, i.e. 3030, 2835, 5050, 5630 and high power SMD LED chips in 3535 packages. The company also manufactures COBs for high power applications up to 200W. Edison Opto’s major products are high power LED chips used in indoor, outdoor, and automotive applications.
In position ten is San’an Optoelectronics, which is China’s largest producer of top-quality ultra-high bright LED epitaxial wafers and chips. The company has been rated as the enterprise with “National Model Project of High-tech industrialization” by the National Development and Reform Commission and the “Leading Company in Semi-Conductor Illumination Projects” by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China.
The top 10 global LED package manufacturers are summarized in Table 3 below, ranked in descending order of LED market share. While LED chip manufacturers are located throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, the majority of LED package manufacturers are in Asia.
