“Are you breaking stuff over there?” my wife said, seconds after my phone hit the ground. Sadly, though, I was. My Pixel 6 Pro’s display was dead and, for the first time in years, it was time to figure out the cost and time it would take to repair my daily driver. Here’s my experience with a walk-in Google Pixel 6 Pro repair and screen replacement went.

Wrapped up in a case and Whitestone screen protector, I figured my Pixel 6 Pro would easily survive a drop from a small side table down around three feet to my wood floors, as it has a few times before. But somehow, this time was the exception. Turning on my screen revealed that there were no cracks or other signs of physical damage, but that the underlying display panel had died. The majority of the display went black, with only a small sign of life in the top left corner, and a black streak emanating from the selfie camera. It was left unusable.

As weird of a situation as it was, the next obvious step way to get a repair on the books. My first thought, of course, was to get a repair going with Google directly. However, because I didn’t have Preferred Care on my Pixel 6 Pro, I figured any repair would very likely be out of warranty, and through Google, that would probably mean swapping out the device entirely and waiting on shipping. I quickly came to the conclusion that it would be faster and probably easier to just do an in-person repair. Still, I decided to do a quick chat with Google Support to explore my options.

That chat went pretty well, with the representative taking my information and a picture of the display to offer some troubleshooting. The first suggestion was to perform a factory reset, which I found odd, but that turned out to be something I couldn’t actually do as I couldn’t even get the phone to fully power off. A few more exchanges later, and it was agreed that a repair would indeed be needed. I was offered the option to do a mail-in repair or a walk-in through Google’s partners. The chat also offered a glimmer of hope that the repair might be covered under my warranty.

As I had figured out earlier, an in-person repair seemed ideal. So, I went to uBreakiFix to schedule an appointment at my local shop which, notably, just opened up in my hometown in the past couple of years. Google has partnered with uBreakiFix since the original Pixel, but the two-hour drive to my nearest location previously made it not very useful.

Of course, I still didn’t know for sure if my repair would be covered by Google’s warranty or if I’d be shelling out for the full cost of a Pixel 6 Pro screen repair. At one time, uBreakiFix conveniently offered price ranges for screen replacements and other repairs when setting up an appointment, but that’s no longer offered for devices including the Pixel 6.

Getting to the uBreakiFix location, I explained to the employee what happened and mentioned that Google had hinted in-warranty coverage might be possible. He took a look, mentioning how this sort of display damage isn’t uncommon. He then got a second opinion from another employee that also thought it might be covered under the warranty.

Had I not been covered under warranty, I was told that a screen repair, and by repair we mean Pixel 6 screen replacement, would have cost $280 for the Pixel 6 Pro, while the regular Pixel 6 would have been $200. That’s not awful, but also not a charge anyone wants to have unexpectedly thrown at them.

Just a few hours after I’d dropped off the phone, I received a text saying that it was repaired and ready to go. When I arrived at the store, the new display was in perfect working order and the fingerprint sensor was too. After a quick conversation about the initial damage, look at the old panel, and a signature later, I was on my way. The employees at this store in particular were pleasant and impressively versed on Pixel issues in particular.

The last time I had to get a Pixel repaired, it was not fun. I was without my main phone for a few days waiting on shipping, and the replacement unit ended up being defective. Years before that, our former staffer Justin Duino reported on a nightmarish experience trying to get his original Pixel repaired not long after launch. And those two instances were not alone. It doesn’t take much to find horror stories stemming from Pixel repairs over on Reddit.

Google still has a long way to go to match the ease of getting an iPhone repaired. One can hope that the rise of Google-owned stores and the continued expansion of the company’s partners will only improve this process going forward. Plus, Google is improving your DIY options for getting a Pixel fixed. Just this month, the company announced a partnership with iFixit which will bring detailed guides and easy-to-buy parts to fix a Pixel at home.

On top of those upgrades, they still lean heavily on premium display quality to stand out among the best of the best. Of course, to protect your investment, you can always use a great protective case for your Z Flip 4 or Z Fold 4, but accidents can happen even with that extra safety layer.

So what happens if that beautiful screen breaks? If a design or manufacturing issue causes a malfunction within the standard one-year warranty period, Samsung will cover the replacement. However, drops, scratches, and spills don"t fall under that umbrella.

Previously, replacing a Fold or Flip screen cost hundreds, even if you subscribed to Samsung"s extended warranty coverage. Now though, after rearranging some fees and optional insurance plans, Samsung offers a more affordable solution for accidental screen damage to the Fold 4 and Flip 4. To access this shockingly low screen replacement price of $29, you"ll have to enroll in Samsung Care+, an extended warranty program.

Samsung Care+ is an optional warranty that extends well beyond the included one-year limited warranty and covers Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH). Most limited warranties don"t cover ADH. In other words, if you drop your phone and crack the screen without additional coverage from Samsung, the replacement cost is entirely on you. Up to the third-gen Fold and Flip, these out-of-warranty costs were sky-high, easily leading to total repair bills of $400 or more.

Samsung hasn"t yet released how much out-of-warranty screen replacement will cost for the new foldables. When it does, check back, and we"ll make sure to lay out the fees. For now, though, Samsung wasted no time offering its newly laid out Care+ package. For $11 per month, Samsung guarantees even its newest and most expensive smartphones against a wide range of accidental damage. Previous generations of Samsung foldables commanded $249 for screen replacements — even with a subscription to Care+.

Again, Samsung will continue to offer free screen repair if your device is under warranty and the problem was due to a design or manufacturing issue. Those defects are rare, but they happen, and Samsung will take care of them for up to one year after purchasing the device. Then, however, you"ll need to enroll in Care+ to continue your coverage.

With just a $29 fee for replacing a premium folding display, Care+ seems like an easy decision. But it doesn"t stop at just screen repairs. For subscribers to Care+, any accidental damage from drops or spills is eligible for coverage. (And, of course, any malfunction that proves to be Samsung"s fault is covered with no deductible required.)

With the release of the fourth generation of folding phones, it makes sense that Samsung is making this kind of owner-friendly change. After all, display damage is a big deterrent to many people spending $1,000+ on a smartphone. Knowing that this relatively affordable insurance plan now covers cracked screens for next to nothing could be a big step toward pushing folding phones deeper into the mainstream.

Like most insurance plans, Care+ doesn"t cover absolutely everything. For example, you won"t receive coverage if the technicians determine the damage is due to natural disasters or intentional damage.

Also, if you damage a device by trying to hack or modify it in unintended ways, you"ll have to pay full price for repairs. Cosmetic damage that doesn"t affect performance is your responsibility, too. And if your device is lost or stolen, you only get reimbursed if you"ve signed up for the Care+ With Loss and Theft package, which is currently $7 more per month than the standard Care+ plan.

For folding phones, you"ll need the Tier 4 plan, which costs $11 per month. You can pay $239 upfront for 24 months of coverage, which is about a 9% discount vs. paying per month. Samsung currently charges $17.99 per month for accidental damage plus loss and theft coverage; it"s not a bad deal for heavy users of Samsung"s newest foldables, and it"s especially worthwhile if you plan on upgrading to the Z Fold 4.

iFixit has been offering OLED screens for those who would like to tackle repairs on their own. Those go for around $100 less than what Apple charges for an official screen replacement but now, it’s started offering LCD replacement for iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. It’s an interesting downgrade from OLED but some on a budget with DIY interest might find it’s a great option.

Apple’s screen repair costs jumped considerably with the arrival of the iPhone X. At this point, it costs between $279 and $329 to get an OLED on the X, XS, and 11 Pro.

we’re now offering an LCD screen option for the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. These LCDs (and their Fix Kits) are less than half the price of the OLED models we sell. They’re a little darker (about 50 nits worth), the resolution is a little lower, and the colors and contrast ratio won’t be quite the same.

Bought this product to repair by cue screen that had lost touch response in the center of the screen. The replacement screen from cuescreens is so much better than the OEM screen. I can confirm that as the company advertises, the touch response is far superior. Excellent image clarity too. I have full functionality on my screen again for a fraction of the price of replacing the whole module. This was the most ambitious project I’ve taken on so far in this vehicle and it is not without its challenges. That said, I went VERY SLOW and took my time to avoid breaking anything. All in the whole process took me 3 hours and 15 minutes from removal of the cue system to installation of the new screen and replacement of the module. I had a little time added due to the fact that I had replaced the OEM charging pad with a Qi enabled pad from 404 parts, and the harness for that pad was a little tricky to remove. I did end up breaking a couple of the clips for the trim around the gear shift when I pulled it out - don’t forget to take out the 7mm screws before pulling on the trim! (I think I may have just snapped those because they were a little brittle from baking in the sun) - that didn’t end up mattering at all - there were still plenty clips intact to firmly hold the trip without any issues. I didn’t buy the trim tools from cuescreens so I maybe could have avoided this had I done so - didn’t see any mention of where to use trim tools in that part of the installation video though.

At the end of the day, I could not be happier with this product. Everything works as advertised, and although it wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, most people should be able to do it if you follow the instructions to the letter and have just a little bit of technical know how and common sense… you may have some slight variations depending on your model of vehicle …for example there were only 4 7mm bolts holding the side pieces onto the cue box in my ATS, whereas the instructions indicate there are 6.

The best advice I can give is slow down and take your time if you are going to attempt this yourself. I guarantee I would’ve screwed it up if I had tried to rush it. I watched the install video all the way through two times before starting, and followed along with the video and pdf while doing the install. Seriously, listen to them when they tell you to do this.
