I had been reading about the new Husqvarna Designer series and one day received an e-mail asking me to review the Designer Diamond Royale sewing and embroidery machine.

Most sewing machines beep when you turn them on or simply don’t make a sound. The Husqvrna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale, however, plays a whimsical tune when the switch is turned to the on position.

The first thing you must do is touch the stitch menu button on the touch screen. A series of different stitch options opens for you to choose from utility stitches, decorative stitches, embroidery stitches or quilting stitches.

For this review, although the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is a sewing and embroidery machine, I decided to test several different utility and decorative stitch options.

I was very impressed with the quality of the stitches made on the Designer Diamond Royale. The utility stitches are clean and well formed and the decorative stitches have great definition.

Although I didn’t personally sample any of the embroidery options, Janet, the Husqvarna/Viking embroidery guru at Ace Sewing and Vacuum eagerly showed me the mask she made on the Designer Diamond Royale and a special embroidery project she did for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Both jobs were exquisite in detail and workmanship.

If, on the other hand, you are already adept at machine embroidery and want to step up to a top of the line sewing and embroidery machine with computer capability and upgradable software, then Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is definitely worth a close look.

It"s not impossible to set the serger up without it. But you need to know the setting and clearance values to set it properly. A service manual would of course have all those values if you can find one.As far as a foot for it, you"re local dealer should have it. TY. Hug The difference is that the 1003 is an older machine. The 936 is a newer machine and I have one. I bought mine new in 2003 so it"s already a few years old and the 1003 is much older than that. The 936 has already been replaced and as I understand from the Viking store not made in Sweden any more. The real differences are the LCD screens, the location of the dials, the looks of the machines and of course the AGE of the machines and the price. It"s always easier to get parts for a newer machine and the 936 should come with a DVD. They both do the same overlock stitches. The coverstitch is the main reason you would buy one of these machines. If you AREN"T going to do the cover stitch (the twin needle look) don"t buy one of these because you will pay more money and have more mechanisms to work with. (If you don"t need the coverstitch, look for a Huskylock 910. It"s just like the 936 but without the coverstitch. You still get the beautiful display, the free arm and the lower looper threader.) If you look on eBay under huskylock 1003 and 936 there are two machines you can see. The 1003 is bid up to 305 dollars and has 20 hours more for bidding. The 936 has a buy it now price of 750 dollars or best offer. You could offer them 350 and see if they take it or go up to 500. I paid 1000 new in 2003. Both say 7 day money back guarantee. If you go to a Viking store and see the new one (I forgot what number replaced the 936) the cover stitch is easier to set up on this one. Good luck picking a new serger. You"ll love it!
