The 2023 Toyota Sienna’s brawny-for-a-minivan exterior design is an attempt at SUV cosplay, but even a casual glance in its direction reveals it for the minivan that it is. Fine by us. We like the way this minivan behaves on the road, with a quiet cabin and a refined ride. Besides the obvious practicality benefits that come with any minivan, the Sienna’s interior is spacious and nicely equipped—although its second-row seats aren’t removable or stowable as they are in other vans. This fourth generation of the Sienna is offered solely as a hybrid, with front- and all-wheel drive variants sharing the same 245-hp rating, which has proven to be on the poky side in our testing. The Sienna’s fuel efficiency, at 36 mpg combined, is far better than that of the other minivans on the market but we’d much rather be piloting the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, or the Kia Carnival.

The current Sienna is in its third year of this hybrid-only generation. Meanwhile, Toyota is celebrating the 25thanniversary of the nameplate this year with a limited-edition version: only 2,525 25th Anniversary Edition Siennas will be built, and all of them will be based on the sporty-looking XSE trim and will wear either Celestial Silver or Wind Chill Pearl exterior paint. Special 20-inch wheels, roof rails, black exterior badging, and exterior mirrors with integrated puddle lights are visual clues to the special model’s identity. The interior is decked out in black leather upholstery with silver stitching, a JBL stereo system, a wireless smartphone charging pad, heated and ventilated front seats, and carpeted floormats bearing the 25th Anniversary logo.

We"re eyeballing the sporty XSE model, which comes with 20-inch wheels, more-aggressive front and rear bumpers, and sport front seats. The XSE also comes standard with in-dash navigation and second-row captain"s chairs. The XSE, like all Sienna trims, comes standard with front-wheel drive but adding all-wheel drive costs just $760, which seems like a worthy upgrade to us.

Unlike previous versions of Toyota"s family van, the Sienna is offered exclusively as a hybrid. The powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors that combine to make 245 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available and adds a third electric motor in back that drives the rear wheels. The Sienna"s main rival—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid—is offered solely with front-wheel drive, but its V-6 engine and electric motors make 260 horsepower. Our all-wheel drive Sienna Platinum failed to excite us during acceleration testing, requiring 7.7 seconds to reach 60 mph and completing the quarter-mile in 15.8 seconds at only 88 mph; these results are similar to what the Pacifica Hybrid managed, but are far slower than non-hybrid examples of the Pacifica we"ve tested as well as the Honda Odyssey.

The EPA estimates that front-wheel drive versions of the Sienna should deliver 36 mpg city as well as 36 mpg highway with all-wheel drive examples carrying ratings 1 mpg lower at 35 mpg. In our mix of city and highway driving, we managed 29 mpg with our all-wheel drive Platinum test vehicle. When we get a chance to put the new Sienna through our 75-mile highway fuel economy test, we"ll update this story with results. Complementing its daring exterior redesign, the Sienna"s interior is modern and stylish. Rather than the open cockpit design of the previous generation model, Toyota has created a tall center console that spans the distance from the dashboard to the center armrest, with a large storage cubby underneath. Upscale Limited and Platinum models have two-tone interior trim and dashboards covered in stitched leather-like material while the sporty XSE model gets black-and-white faux-leather seats with red contrast stitching. Unlike the Odyssey and the Pacifica Hybrid, the Sienna"s second row seats are not removable; however, the optional second-row captain"s chairs can slide forward-and-back a total of 25 inches to help provide maximum legroom for rear-seat riders or to open as much room as possible aft of the second row for cargo. Limited and Platinum models can be had with reclining second-row seats with pop-up ottomans. The two top trims can also be equipped with an onboard vacuum cleaner.

Toyota"s latest infotainment interface is a 9.0-inch touchscreen display which stands upright on the dashboard above the climate controls. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity features are all standard, and seven USB ports dot the van"s cabin. Toyota provides SiriusXM satellite radio and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot as well. The base stereo is a 6-speaker setup; and XLE models get eight speakers. A 12-speaker JBL stereo system is optional on the XLE and XSE and standard on the Limited and Platinum. In-dash navigation is standard starting with the XSE trim; a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display is optional on all but the base LE model.

Toyota offers blind-spot monitoring and its Safety Sense 2.0 bundle of driver-assistance features standard on the new Sienna, while convenience items such as parking sensors and a 360-degree exterior camera system are optional. The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American and select East Asian markets. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021.

Following the discontinuation of GM"s all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

In 1997, Toyota launched the front-wheel drive 1998 model year Sienna in the North American market as a replacement for the mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive Previa. The Sienna debuted with a 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 engine rated at 194 hp (145 kW) and 209 lb⋅ft (284 N⋅m) of torque. Built on an extended platform of the Toyota Camry, the Sienna was appropriately marketed as the "Camry of minivans," capitalizing on the Camry"s popularity and reputation.

It came in three trim levels, CE, LE, and XLE. The LE and XLE models were equipped with 2nd row captain"s chairs while the CE models came equipped with a 2nd row 2-passenger bench seat. The seats can be easily folded and individually removed as needed. The driver side sliding door and roof rack were standard on the LE and XLE models, but were optional on the CE models. The XLE models offered leather seats and a wood trim package. The Sienna also touted best-in-class fuel economy of 16 mpg‑US (15 L/100 km; 19 mpg‑imp) city driving and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway driving. It was built in Georgetown, Kentucky. A year after its release, the Sienna faced new competition from the redesigned Honda Odyssey minivan, which was larger and now offered a V6 like the Sienna.

In 2000, for the 2001 model year, the Sienna underwent a mid-cycle refresh. This update included a facelift to both front and rear fascias which added a redesigned front grille and bumper along with revised rear tail lights sporting a more modern appearance (clear-lens turn-signals as opposed to amber-coloured). Toyota also revamped the center console area to add more usability to the HVAC controls along with new locations for the accessory switches (rear vent, power sliding doors, heated seats). The engine also came equipped with a variable valve timing feature VVT-i boosting output to 210 hp (157 kW) and 220 lb⋅ft (298 N⋅m) of torque. The driver side sliding door became standard on all models, although the roof rack remained optional on the CE models.

This generation was noteworthy for its impressive safety content as one of the few minivans at the time to offer options including front seat-mounted side torso airbags and Vehicle Stability Control. Anti-lock braking was standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Sienna "Good" in all six frontal crash test measures, which was far better than the Previa.

The reputation of this generation was marred by a class-action settlement for an engine oil sludge problem which affected the V6 engines in many Toyota models. Symptoms of the problem include oil smoke in the exhaust, oil quickly becoming dark or black after an oil change, gasoline odor in the oil, high oil consumption, and eventually engine failure.

Toyota assigned Yuji Yokoya as chief engineer on the new Sienna project. The optional rear seat audio system was discontinued. Horsepower and torque ratings were changed to meet SAE"s new standard to 215 hp (160 kW) and 222 lb·ft (from 230 hp (172 kW) and 242 lb⋅ft (328 N⋅m), Toyota also now rates engines on 87 octane).

2007: a new ULEV-II certified 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 engine rated at 266 hp (198 kW) with a rated fuel economy of 17/23 MPG for front-wheel-drive models and 16/21 MPG for AWD models replaced the 3.3-liter V6. This engine had a lower-maintenance timing chain as opposed to the timing belt of previous Sienna engines. The tire pressure monitor was upgraded, and a new seven-spoke alloy wheel design was made exclusive to the Limited and AWD models.

The rear seat entertainment option now uses a 16.4-inch (41.7 cm) LCD screen which operates in two view modes, a single 16:9-ratio widescreen or two separate 4:3-ratio split screens with separate wireless headphones.

For safety the back-up camera comes with a new 180° panoramic view. Other new options include a Pre-Collision System (PCS) as well as an automatic highbeam dimmer, Safety Connect and a more advanced stability control system known as Vehicle Integrated Dynamics Management. A driver"s knee airbag is now standard as well.

When the second row seats are removed, the bottom of the second row seats, which is similar to a rack, remains attached to the van floor. This means that with second row seats removed, the floor is not flat.

Toyota is the first automaker to offer a factory installed auto-access seat for disabled people. The one-touch rotating, power ascending/descending lift-up seat can lower to within 19 inches (48 cm) of the ground.

2014, for the 2015 model year: Minor refresh with new tail lights for all trim levels except the SE. In the interior, the dash was redesigned replacing the asymmetric swoop with a more conventional and cohesive center display. The previous small info window on top of the dash was also removed and placed in the center display. The center console was also redesigned. The entertainment system was updated to Blu-Ray with HDMI and SD card auxiliary input, from the earlier DVD with RCA jacks. Several technological upgrades could be optioned. Toyota added three new colors (Sky Blue Pearl, Creme Brulee Metallic, and Attitude Black Metallic). For the Limited and SE models, the Sienna features refreshed headlights with LED daytime running lights.

2017, for the 2018 model year: A mild facelift with a new front grille, new headlights, new side skirts, standard Safety Sense, minor noise and vibration enhancements, and additional technology like extra USB ports, an updated rear entertainment system (for models equipped with this option), and a semi-digital instrument cluster.lane-keeping assist, and automated high-beams.

2018, for the 2019 model year: All-wheel drive became available on the SE trim and the Limited trim with FWD is no longer offered. CarPlay support is introduced alongside the Entune 3.0 media system.

2019, for the 2020 model year: The Nightshade Edition became available on all FWD and AWD models. The Nightshade package includes four exterior colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Salsa Red Pearl and Super White.

Toyota announced the fourth-generation Sienna in May 2020 as a 2021 model, and appearing for sale near the end of 2020. It was originally intended to be revealed at the 2020 New York International Auto Show in April, but instead was unveiled virtually on 18 May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released on 27 October 2020 and hit the showrooms shortly after in November.GA-K platform.hybrid powertrain.

The fourth-generation Sienna is offered in the returning LE, XLE and Limited trims, while receiving two additional trims: the sport-oriented XSE (replaced the SE trim), and the top-of-the-line Platinum trim. The Sienna is available with a built-in vacuum cleaner, refrigerated compartment (however, vacuum and refrigerator were later discontinued due to supplier issues), heads-up display, and 360° camera view on the Platinum trim level. In addition, the Sienna can be equipped with a third electric motor to power the rear wheels. Standard and optional family oriented features for the Sienna include 18 cup holders, 7 USB ports (only one of which is data capable), four-zone climate control, onboard Wi-Fi, rear entertainment system, power sliding doors and liftgate, and a voice amplification system for the driver for better communications with passengers seated in the back. Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist.

Starting in early 2021, the Sienna became available in TaiwanGAC Toyota,Toyota Granvia (Chinese: 格瑞维亚; pinyin: Géruìwéiyǎ) nameplate was produced by FAW Toyota. The Granvia adopted the styling of the North American Sienna XSE.

2022, for the 2023 model year: The Sienna 25th Anniversary was introduced as a limited model with 2,525 units produced, featuring exclusive exterior and interior trim. It is based on the XSE trim.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna does a superb job of meeting the needs of minivan shoppers in critical areas. Fuel economy is a significant consideration for many. The Sienna addresses this concern with a standard hybrid powertrain that makes it the top choice in its class for gas mileage. The optional all-wheel drive can make your travels safer and more secure in rough weather; the only other minivan with this amenity is the Chrysler Pacifica. Additionally, the Sienna impresses with an upmarket cabin that makes daily commutes more comfortable and luxurious.

Unlike the Honda Odyssey and Kia Carnival, the Sienna"s second-row seats aren"t removable, hampering its flexibility. And the Sienna trails the Odyssey, Carnival, and Pacifica in horsepower. But overall, this capable Toyota is a solid choice if you value stylish accommodations and excellent gas mileage.

The Toyota Sienna has an upscale cabin and is one of the most fuel-efficient minivans you can buy. However, it has less horsepower than key rivals and a less versatile interior.

To celebrate the minivan"s 25 years on the market, Toyota adds a 25th Anniversary Edition to the Sienna lineup, with a limited production of 2,525 in the U.S. This model is based on the sporty XSE trim and adds luxury features from the plush Limited. It has distinctive wheels and exterior accents and is available in two colors: Celestial Silver and Wind Chill Pearl.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna is available in six trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, 25th Anniversary Edition, Limited, and Platinum. The XLE gets our recommendation. We"ll explain why.

The base Sienna LE costs $36,720 (including a $1,215 destination fee). It includes a full complement of active-safety driver assists, three-zone automatic climate control, power sliding doors, a power liftgate, and a 9-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Wi-Fi capability.

For $42,030, the XLE upgrades from cloth to synthetic leather upholstery. It also has four-zone climate control, power-adjustable seats, heated front seats, a sunroof, and hands-free operation for the sliding doors and liftgate. Although the Sienna LE is well-equipped, the XLE"s easy-clean upholstery and heated front seats make it worth the upgrade. It"s a good choice for the typical minivan buyer.

This limited-edition trim starts at 47,885. It has the same sporty suspension tuning as the XSE and adds luxury amenities from the Limited. In addition, distinctive exterior accents separate this model from other trims.

The Limited, at $48,980, includes genuine leather, ventilated front seats, captain"s chairs with ottomans (front-wheel-drive models only), roof rails, and wireless charging. The available 1,500-watt AC inverter is a smart add-on for tailgating or camping.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna"s hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. The all-wheel-drive version gets a third electric motor that drives the rear wheels.

This minivan"s hybrid system delivers a total of 245 horsepower. That means the Sienna has less power than the Kia Carnival (290 hp), Chrysler Pacifica (287 hp), and Honda Odyssey (280 hp). But the difference is not as bad as it sounds, as the electric motors deliver an instant punch that makes the Sienna feel responsive around town. When accelerating at higher speeds, the deficit is evident. Also, Toyota"s four-cylinder engine is noisy when pushed. The transmission holds the engine speed steady as acceleration builds, making the noise more noticeable. Once cruising, the engine quiets down and can imperceptibly switch off for brief periods to let the electric motors take over.

The Sienna rides comfortably. Its suspension smoothes bumps, yet the Sienna doesn"t suffer from excessive body motions that can make rear-seat passengers feel queasy. The steering is nicely weighted and accurate, which makes the Sienna feel nimble for such a big vehicle. For those who prefer an even more responsive feel, the sport-tuned XSE has a tighter suspension.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hasn"t yet rated the 2023 Toyota Sienna, but the identical 2022 Sienna returned 36/36 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive models get 35 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Those figures make it the most fuel-efficient minivan on the market.

The Toyota Sienna"s cabin has a premium look, with attractive design cues and top-notch materials. Its cockpit-like front compartment stands apart from the minivan norm. A two-tier console has an upper section with the shifter and four cupholders, and the lower section can stash a large handbag. Another stowage shelf spans the lower dash and includes a wireless charging pad.

The base LE has a second-row bench. The XLE offers a bench or captain"s chairs, and XSE and higher trims have captain"s chairs only. Those captain"s chairs can move forward or back by more than 2 feet. In the Limited and Platinum trims, the chairs also include deployable footrests for a lounge-like experience. Adults and kids can ride comfortably in the third row. Additional amenities include a console fridge (in the Platinum), a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch ceiling-mounted screen, and seven USB ports.

Behind the third row, you get 33.5 cubic feet of luggage space, which beats the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica but not the Kia Carnival. Stowing the rearmost seats increases cargo capacity to 75.2 cubic feet. For maximum space, the Sienna"s second-row seats tuck up against the front seatbacks, but they aren"t removable. The second row can be removed entirely in rivals such as the Odyssey and Carnival. As a result, the Sienna has less maximum cargo space than competing minivans.

All versions of the 2023 Toyota Sienna come with a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. This touchscreen isn"t the most dazzling, but it"s easy to use. It can display multiple functions simultaneously and is surrounded by physical buttons to control primary functions easily. The image from the 360-degree surround-view monitor isn"t as sharp as in the Chrysler Pacifica, but the Sienna"s system can show a perimeter sweep of what"s around the vehicle. Too bad it"s exclusive to the top Platinum trim.

It hasn"t yet rated the 2023 Toyota Sienna, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the identical 2022 Sienna its highest rating, Top Safety Pick+. The award is based on crash-test results, accident-avoidance tech, headlight effectiveness, and access to child seat anchors. And while it hasn"t yet rated the 2023 model, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2022 Sienna a top five-star rating.

All Siennas come with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, road-sign recognition, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. The lane centering, however, is tentative when the highway lane is insufficiently marked.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna matches up favorably against the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, and Kia Carnival minivans. Its main advantages are its class-leading fuel economy, available all-wheel drive, and upscale cabin. However, buyers who regularly need maximum cargo space should look at the Carnival and Odyssey, which surpass the Sienna in this area thanks to their removable second-row seats. The Kia, Honda, and Chrysler minivans also pack more horsepower than this Toyota.
