just to recap quickly: one day I turned on my laptop and there was a big nasty crack down the screen running from the top in a jagged line across to the side. the machine was never dropped, hit or abused in any way, so to anyone out there who doubts that this kind of thing can just happen... well, it can.

anyway, after taking the machine to an authorised repair centre, instead of contacting apple for a warranty repair as I"d asked them to do, they just sent me a quote to replace the screen at a cost of around 950€. now, if I"d dropped my computer, or some accident had happened to it, I would have just had to swallow it and accept that this is how things go. but seeing as nothing like that had ever happened, it"s a little harder to come around to thinking you are going to have to shell out for something that obviously was defective and snapped all of its own accord. the repair centre suggested that if I wasn"t happy with the quote I should take it up directly with apple..

so, I called apple france the next day and explained the situation. it was a little tricky because my MBP is now a month or so out of warranty, however it was still under warranty at the date when I handed it over for repair. so fortunately I had documentation to prove that. after a lengthy conversation and being put on hold a couple of times, the consultant told me that they would need to speak with the technician that had assessed the machine. if the technician would verify that there were no signs of abuse on the computer, they"d replace the display under warranty. so they put me on hold again and called the repair centre. when they got back to me, the confirmed that whatever happened to my display was not the result of any damage accidental or otherwise, and they would authorise repair under warranty.

there was one additional factor that may have played in my favour in this whole story.. when I bought the computer (online from the apple store) and it was delivered, the first thing I noticed about the machine was that the display wasn"t very good. it had badly uneven backlighting, was not evenly sharp all over and was generally not up to the standard I would expect in a top of the line machine.. so, I immediately called apple and told them this. they offered me a DOA which is "dead on arrival", the right to have the machine replaced for an entirely new one within 14 days of receiving it. at the time since it was the very first batch of the core 2 duo machines, I didn"t want to run the risk of getting a new machine that might have had something else wrong with it. a sub-standard display I could live with as long as the rest of the machine was in good working order, which it was.. better that than have a dodgy hard drive or worse. so, they created a detailed record on my call, with a reference number etc. basically it said that I had decided to keep the machine but that I felt the display had issues, and that during the warranty period I was going to consider asking for the display to be replaced if I felt that whatever quality issues they had with the early machine"s displays were worked out later.

next time I am definitely getting apple care, because I knew all along that there was something up with my machine, and if it had died after the warranty ran out, it would have been a bit unpleasant let"s say.

If the display is flickering: Make sure your Mac and display are connected to one another with good quality cables and adapters. You may also be experiencing interference from a nearby power line, a fluorescent light, a radio, a microwave oven, another computer, or another electrical device. Try relocating nearby electrical devices, or moving your Mac and display.

If you see bright or dark spots on a flat-panel or Mac notebook computer screen: Your display may have pixel anomalies. If you suspect your Apple display contains a high number of anomalies, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service. Repairs performed by untrained individuals or using non-genuine Apple parts may affect the safety and functionality of the device.

I accidentally applied some pressure to the bottom part of the display on my 13” macbook air 2017 (near the hinge, whilst closed). This initially caused the top half of the display to show not work properly, showing lines. It then gradually got worse, until the entire display would only show colored lines.

I found that applying pressure to the bottom left hand side of the display temporarily mitigated the problem. I’m aware this is where one of the ribbon cables is, and guess this means it’s damaged? See attached video:

I was able to use the macbook normally when plugged into an external display. Because of this I assumed it was not a faulty graphics card, but some fault with the display cables. I don’t think the display it’s self is cracked as there is no visible crack. (Could I be wrong??)

The machine still boots, and works normally when attached to a display. I now think the problem may be to do with the LCD it’s self and the ribbon cables that attach it to the LVDS assembly (not sure about terminology here..).

I’m posting to try and get some help validating my assumptions. I’m not sure what the best next step would be, should I replace the LCD by separating it from the backlight and installing a new one? Is there some other component that is possibly the problem? I would not want to go to the trouble of replacing the LCD to find it was some other component! I could buy a completely new display assembly, but this feels wasteful!

If you have a Mac laptop or iMac with a display that’s been damaged or no longer turns on, but you’re sure the computer is still functioning, a repair may not be required to extract all its data or continue using it.

(In fact, without a paid AppleCare+ for Mac plan, repair costs for a display often far exceed a Mac’s value unless a repair shop can find a refurbished or salvaged display. It may be cheaper or not much more expensive to simply buy a used Mac of the same vintage with a working monitor.)

All Mac laptops and iMacs of the last many years support an external monitor, though the particular adapter and type varies based on the vintage of Mac:

Shut down the Mac if it’s running. (If you can’t see the display well enough to select Shut Down, press and hold the power button until it powers down, which is about 10 seconds.)

Start up the Mac. If you’re lucky, the monitor is enabled with display mirroring, so you see exactly on the monitor what would appear on the internal display.

See if you can bring up the Displays preference pane and check the Mirror Displays box in the Arrangement tab. Even if you can’t see it, you might be able to grab the top of the window with the cursor on the monitor that’s invisible to you and drag it to the monitor you can see! It’s a little like those terrible claw toy machines—but without being able to even see the claw or the toy.

macOS allows remote screen access via a local network using Bonjour, but only if you enabled Screen Sharing in the Sharing preference pane. If you might have done so, follow these steps:

A few MacBook users have reported a potentially serious issue with Apple’s M1 MacBooks. Stories of cracked LCD screens on Apple’s M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro, which launched in November 2020, have appeared in several places online.

Discussion threads about this problem popped up back in July 2021 on Apple’s Support Community and Reddit, with multiple users reporting similar incidents. These people opened up their laptop lids to find a cracked screen, black lines, and discoloration. The reason for the MacBook cracked screens still isn’t clear, with these folks reporting normal routine usage and no external damage whatsoever.

“I bought a MacBook Air M1 6 months ago and the screen cracked for no apparent reason. I left my computer on the top of my desk during the night and the next day I opened it the screen had two small cracks on the right which damaged the functioning of the screen. I contacted an authorized Apple center which told me Apple warranty would not cover it as it is a contact point crack; as if I have left something the size of a rice berry between the screen and the keyboard. It is absurd as I have nothing like it on my desk and the computer was properly closed as usual and didn’t move the whole night.”

“I have just experienced the same thing. On July 28th I closed my laptop to take the dog outside. I came back in and opened up the laptop and there was a crack. It was very confusing as I could not understand how this would have happened. Took the Mac to the apple store and was told right off the bat ‘I will tell you what you did here’ and it was explained how I must have closed the lid on something. When I said that did not happen they said I must have pushed down on it or held it wrong.”

Based on these reports, there is no single apparent cause for the cracks. Users have reported no external damage, pressure, or force applied to their device. A probable cause for the cracks could be debris present between the screen and Mac’s body while the screen was shut. This could have caused the crack in the screen, especially if the owner forcefully shut the laptop lid.

A cracked screen from debris is always a possibility with laptops, given their portable nature. However, it seems that the exact culprit is too small for affected users to have seen or noticed. This seems plausible since Apple has previously warned MacBook owners not to attach webcam covers to their laptops—since the cover creates an additional gap between the screen and the body, it may cause cracks.

Another speculation on the cause of the cracks is the frame of the MacBook. It is possible that the frame holding the screen is too weak to properly safeguard it from the torque force experienced when it’s closed or carried around.

However, we think this is unlikely, as the design of the current M1 MacBook Air and Pro is the same as the previous generation. We haven’t seen any widespread complaints of any screen-cracking issues in that generation, so the chance of it only happening on the new model is low.

Unless the damage is minor, a cracked screen will likely result in a dead screen, rendering your device unusable. As such, you’ll want to get it repaired quickly. Your best bet is to go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Repair Center for a MacBook screen replacement or device replacement.

Some people have gotten lucky and were offered a free repair or replacement of their system. However, Apple support has told most victims of this issue that they are responsible, so the damage is not covered by the machine’s warranty. Charges vary between $400 and $800 for a new LCD panel installation.

If your Mac is covered under AppleCare+, the cost should be substantially less. A cracked screen with AppleCare+ currently costs $99 to repair. AppleCare also covers two incidents of accidental damage, which should include this specific issue.

The value of AppleCare+ has been a debatable topic for many years, with lots of people choosing not to purchase it because they believe they can keep their devices safe. However, it is important to note that AppleCare+ for Mac is quite handy in cases like these.

AppleCare+ extends the included coverage to three years from one year, though you can also add onto your AppleCare+ coverage if needed. It includes two physical damage repairs every 12 months, with an additional charge of $99 for replacing the screen or outside the laptop.

AppleCare+ currently costs $199 for the M1 MacBook Air and $249 for the M1 MacBook Pro M1. If you compare this to your initial investment of at least $1,000 (depending on which MacBook you’ve purchased), it’s not too bad. In addition, this plan can save money in the long run if you’re particularly accident-prone. We would recommend purchasing protection if it fits your budget, especially if you can’t afford to pay for repairs.

Apple hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, nor has it introduced a repair or replacement program for affected Macs. Hopefully, Apple will soon acknowledge the issue and the cause behind it, along with a cheaper repair program for users affected by the random screen cracks. It’s already possible to see if your Mac has been recalled for some reason, which includes special cases like this.

It"s one of the new ones that has been added to this year"s version, and as a result, many might not know how to perform it after scoring a goal. Thankfully, it"s not very difficult to perform and can be done by anyone. Regarding the FIFA series, the celebrations genuinely hold a special place in the hearts of the fans. Over the years, players have been able to replicate the celebration of their favorite heroes in the game, and the developers have ensured that the series" final entry will have no shortage of that. Celebrations are a significant factor in FIFA 23, although they don"t impact gameplay. Yet, players love to celebrate in their fashion, and EA Sports has now provided more options. This year has seen new additions to the overall list and signature moves.

Rumour: Cave Story 2 Teased at PAX South and Could Be in the Works Nintendo Life "Maybe, maybe not" by Share: is quite the tale of success. Developed over five years by one man, named Daisuke Amaya, it first saw release over ten years ago on PC. Since then, it"s received universal acclaim, achieved widespread popularity and has been ported to numerous platforms. Taking inspiration from old school exploration and action games like and , the run "n" gunner was praised for its compelling story and well-balanced gameplay. However, over a decade later there still hasn"t been any evidence of a sequel, though this may have just changed recently. Nicalis, the company that handled porting and publishing of the game to consoles, held a discussion at PAX South yesterday and may have inadvertently - or otherwise - spilled the beans. At the end of the panel - which was headed by the company founder, Tyrone Rodriguez - an eagle eyed fan noticed a desktop icon on the home screen of the Macbook they were using to present, titled "Cave Story 2". When the fan asked Rodriguez about it, he said that he "hadn"t noticed that shortcut icon". When asked directly whether or not they were working on a sequel, he responded with, "maybe, maybe not." Before speculation gets out of hand, remember that this is not Nicalis" game, though it was responsible for publishing and producing ports. It"s certainly within the realm of reason that if Daisuke Amaya did create a sequel, he would partner with Nicalis once again to get it published

for consoles. We"re also hoping that a video of the presentation is posted online to reinforce the earnest claims of the source that witnessed this exchange. What do you think? 4 Psychonauts Released back in 2005 by developer Double Fine, Psychonauts is a quirky 3D ation-platformer that takes place in the world of psychics. Playing as a kid named Raz, he flees from his family of circus performers to a summer camp for Psychonauts - a group of spies who use their powers to battle threats. A creative design that quite literally explores the psyche of many NPCs, great writing, and tight platforming gameplay makes it a must-have even 17 years later. Back then, Psychonauts flopped despite a positive response from critics, leaving the future of the series in jeopardy. But thankfully, a cult following brought it into the mainstream spotlight, which led to a modern sequel "Psychonauts 2" in 2021 after much anticipation. The original Psychonauts is available on PC.

That, coupled with the fact that developer Troika Games faced troubled development due to having to work with the unfamiliar Source Engine, resulted in the final product being an unfinished and broken mess. With an atmospheric sandbox, rich writing, and complex RPG mechanics, this vampire game set in the World of Darkness universe saw a rise to fame thanks to a dedicated fanbase, which gave rise to many Vampire spin-offs and an upcoming successor – Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2.
