HD Guru came across Jeff  Bartran’s letter to Vizio CEO and founder William Wang complaining that the company’s service department had deemed “un-repairable” his 13.5 month old, high end $1868 Vizio 55-inch

HD Guru investigated to determine if Bertran’s experience was unique. It didn’t take long to find eight additional cases of “un-repairable” out-of-warranty Vizios posted in the last thirteen months alone on the consumer complaint website consumeraffairs.com.

The un-repairable defects included black screens, dark spots and red and green lines. Vizio replaced defective in-warranty sets with refurbished units, which a number of owners complained also failed soon after the warranty period.

Vizio’s Florida customer service center confirmed in a phone call that defective set owners are indeed told that their TVs are un-repairable when the failure turns out to be the backlight unit (BLU), which is the light source within all LED and LCD flat panels.  Mr. Bertran told HD Guru that according to Vizio, his set’s problem was, indeed, backlight failure. He also stated Vizio offered him a replacement at a discount , however at a price  higher than he could get from Vizio’s etailers offering the same model.

Should an under one year old set be deemed un-repairable, Vizio’s warranty policy is to replace it (at their option) with a used, refurbished set they call “Recertified.” An out-of-warranty set becomes an expensive doorstop.

HD Guru contacted Vizio’s media relations company for a comment along with a request for a list of “un-repairable” models and the problems that would cause them to be so labeled but no response was forthcoming.

“First of all, we do not currently have any OW (out of warranty) PDP (plasma) or LCD TV models where our standard response is to tell the customer that the unit is unrepairable and can’t be fixed.  Our policy and practice is to fix customer units to keep them in the home and in the brand.

Having said that, we do occasionally work with OW customers where their defective OW unit might require extensive parts replacements that cause the unit to be uneconomical to repair.  These cases are not common, but when we do run across them, we typically will offer the customer an option of buying a new set at a discounted price….in addition, we do occasionally run across a unit that just won’t stay fixed or stumps our technical people as to the cause of the defect….this is not a common occurrence, but when that happens, we will offer to replace the unit at a discounted price…..our goal here is always to keep the customer in the Panasonic brand.”

Late Thursday night, after this article was published, Vizio responded . The spokesperson did not honor our request for an explanation as to why Vizio calls a bad backlight(s) un-repairable (other companies repair sets with the same defect) nor did they provide us with the list of un-repairable Vizio TV models and their associated defects we requested. Instead they made a response regarding defective panels, although we never inquired about panel defects.  Below is Vizio’s response verbatim.

“Panel defects are extremely rare with VIZIO televisions.  In cases where a panel defect does arise, VIZIO’s policy is to replace the unit as opposed to sourcing, shipping and installing a replacement panel because it is considered  “beyond economical repair” (BER). Panels can be replaced, but it is economically impractical because the cost of a new unit is comparable and comes with a full manufactures warranty. VIZIO is addressing it’s customer service response to ensure there are no further misunderstandings.”

“At VIZIO, customer satisfaction is paramount.  Our customer service personnel are instructed to provide consumers with all of their options. VIZIO honors all in-warranty repairs either by replacing parts, or by replacing the unit. Consumers with out-of-warranty units always have the option to replace parts and repair – their decision comes down to cost.  When the cost to repair a unit nearly meets, or exceeds the cost of a new unit, Vizio counsels the consumer that it is deemed Beyond Economical Repair. The final decision to repair or replace is at the consumer’s discretion.  This extends to panels, backlights or any other component of any VIZIO unit.

LCD: LCD stands for liquid crystal display, and it’s the most common kind of television besides OLED (defined below). LCD TVs shine an LED backlight through a panel of liquid crystal, a malleable substance that reacts to electricity, opening or closing when jolted. In LCD TVs, the liquid crystal opens to allow the backlight through or closes to block it. The specific details of the opening/closing are dependent upon the arrangement of the pixels: The most common LCD arrangements are Vertical Alignment (VA) and In-Plane Switching (IPS), with the former tending to produce higher contrast and the latter tending to produce wider viewing angles. All so-called “LED” TVs are really LCD TVs, as are all current QLED and ULED TVs.

OLED: An organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, TV creates light inside each individual pixel without using a backlight and can dim each pixel individually all the way down to black, which LCD TVs can’t do. This tech gives an OLED TV an infinite contrast ratio and other benefits to help create an overall better-looking image, although at considerable additional cost. Mini-LEDs: Every LCD TV made today currently uses LEDs to produce the light that shines through the LCD panel. Most TVs use LED lights that pass through a diffuser to light up the entire LCD screen. Mini-LEDs, which some TVs use, are much smaller than traditional LEDs, so TV makers can install more of them and thus create more zones of local dimming, which means less blooming or halos around bright objects. Mini-LEDs are completely different from micro-LEDs, an available (though very expensive) technology that employs individual red, green, and blue LEDs to produce an image without needing an LCD panel at all.

Quantum dots: Quantum dots are a color-enhancing technology primarily found in LCD TVs (though some 2022 OLED TVs now have them as well). Chiefly employed as a filter that’s painted onto a substrate, quantum dots are microscopic nano-crystals that, when struck with blue light, produce very vivid red or green light (depending upon the size of the crystal). Quantum dots are the primary technology that allows LCD TVs to produce the wide color gamut required to display HDR content properly, as they greatly increase the color saturation of red and green.

Judder: This term refers to a slightly jerky motion that can occur when 24p film content appears on a TV with a 60 Hz refresh rate. In such situations, to make 24 frames match up to the 60 Hz display, half of the frames appear two times and the other half appear three times. This display technique causes judder, which is most noticeable on panning shots. Some 120 Hz displays avoid this effect by repeating each film frame five times, while some 60 Hz panels run at 48 Hz to show each frame twice.

I have a Vizio M3D550KD LED TV that is less then 2 years old and I am getting light horizontal lines with a vertical grid. At the same time the picture will freeze for a second and the sound is good. I have an lg 55lv5500 LED LCD. I have power, sound and picture. However, the picture has vertical lines that are discolored over the whole screen (blacks are green, etc.). I have taken off the back and when I unplug the smaller LVD cable connected to the left of the TCon board, the picture clears but every other vertical line is black (meaning the vertical lines that are displayed when I do this appear to be the correct color). Is the LCD or the TCon board bad? Suggestions on how to further diagnose the problem? While I wasn’t present, my wife who was watching at the time said she heard a “pop” when the problem originated.

If your LG TV has vertical lines that are changing colors and you heard a “popping” noise while watching the TV, then this is most likely the T-con board (Timing Control Board) has a bad cap or another board has a capacitor on it that is bad. Check to see if you can find an obvious sign of a bad cap on any board. If so, replace the cap. Also, check to be sure all ribbon cables are connected and they are not damaged. If you cannot find a popped cap, then the T-con is most likely causing your issue from what you have explained. As long as the LCD panel is not cracked or broken, then a board or bad cap is causing the issue.

FYI – The T-CON board is the part of the LCD screen, it relays messages between the device’s processor and the display. The T-CON board synchronizes different parts of the screen with the info it gets from the processor. If the T-CON board malfunctions then the timing between parts of the board is disrupted and this leads to both horizontal and vertical lines that will display on the screen. It can also cause pixelation issues on your TV screen.

If the TV was pressed down on hard, something behind the screen (board, hardware) has made contact with the screen or the screen may have been cracked, or “pushed in”. You will need to determine where the damage is and replace parts from that point. You can find TV replacement parts online for a decent price if you do some research.

What are you using to watch TV an HD Antenna or other? Have you tried switching inputs to see if it is the TV or something else? You may need to do a “Channel Scan” for ANTENNA. Go into the menu on your Vizio TV and look for the “Channel Scan” for antenna. Run it and you should have the channels appear.

A 40 inch screen replacement for one of the low end Sanyo TVs would cost as much as the TV. Usually a screen replacement makes sense if your TV is over $1500 as the screen cost will not be over the cost of the TV, but a cheap HDTV replacement screen will be too expensive to make financial sense. Buying a new TV will be your best bet. Your TV may also have internal damage, meaning a circuit board could be bad since it fell over. So even if you replaced the screen, you may still have issues. Sell it on Craigslist for $50 dollars as replacement parts for someone who has the same TV and may need the stand or similar.

I have a TCL 42″ inch LED TV. I bought it last December 30 2015 at SM appliances. When i started cleaning on my wall i accidentally bumped my TV, then the screen broke. I recently bought a Samsung 65″ curved 4k TV (JS9000) and the screen received a somewhat deep vertical scratch near the top of the screen. About 3/4 – an inch long. Not an actual crack and no other problems with the picture, but it’s annoying because I know it’s there and the TV is less than a month old. And expensive. If I look closely, the pixels still seem to work, but the outer surface has been removed where the scratch is. Does anyone fix curved panels yet, or am I just going to have to live with it?

If the picture is fine but there is a small scratch on the screen, there is not much you can do. There are screen scratch repair kits but may not work properly if applied to an LCD or LED screen. Check YouTube for ways to remove scratches and marks from flat screen TVs.

Our Vizio E472VL was working fine until recently the picture was replaced by about 4 inch narrow band of vertical lines. I thought this might be the ribbon cables connecting the main board to panel but now not sure. I press on the top of the cables to improve connection and the band will widen, change color or move around; however I never get any picture not even the menu. I have a Sanyo TV DP46849. When you turn it on you get a white screen with thin color vertical lines. You see some of the lines start getting lighter and lighter and then go white. There is no sound before this happened the right side of screen would roll like so i had the t-con replaced but no change. I spoke to a repair shop they say it may be a the main board just went out it powers up fine and the repair shop said the LCD screen was not cracked what do you think the problem may be.

The inner screen is what is probably causing the lines. They range in different prices depending on where you buy it. A good place to look would be eBay for a replacement screen. May be better off just buying a new TV.

Even if the screen on your Sony Bravia TV is not cracked, it is most likely damaged. It may have a cracked inner screen or when the screen fell over. The TVs front panel may have hit and made contact with a board inside the TV. Is the front panel of screen depressed inward on any part of the front screen surface? Look at the TV screen from a side angle with a flashlight to see. If there is no damage to the front panel, then the inner panel may have cracked. You should be able to see any damage to the inner or outer screen panel when using a flashlight.

Philips 47″ LCD…comes on works fine occasionally, but usually when turning it on, a horizontal gray bar with vertical lines inside it blinks and the screen will slowly fade to white. I can see about an inch of video at the top sometimes. So I turn it off for a few minutes and try again. You may have a bad power board if you need to take an hour of time trying to turn the TV on or off. What is the model number of your Philips 47″ LCD TV? Has anything come in contact with the screen? Did this problem suddenly appear or did this issue happen over time? If the screen was not hit then a board may be on the fritz. When you opened the TV did you check to be sure all boards are secure and the wire harness/ribbon cables are tight and in place correctly?

Had an incident where my 60″ Vizio Smart TV got hit on the left side of screen. Came home to turn on TV and the TV had back glow but no picture (still has sound) and a nice size point of impact. If the inner glass is cracked, the only way to fix the TV is to replace what is broken. The inner glass or panel for the TV can be found online but may cost more than the TV. Finding a used TV with an intact screen is the cheapest way.

I have a Phillips 9,000 Series Flat HDTV, 119 cm LCD. Most of the screen is blocked by a white screen, with some rainbow vertical lines within it. To the right of the main crack (which is a little to the right of the center of the screen), the white is darker and there are more rainbow lines there. Only at the very top of the screen in the middle can you see the actual channel. The TV does work overall in terms of turning on, the cable, etc. and you can still hear the sound, its just the crack. I am assuming that I would only need to change the screen in this situation. Do you have any cheap suggestions?

Yes if everything is working properly but the screen is cracked and the picture is distorted, the screen needs replaced. You can find used or new screen replacements on Craigslist, eBay, and searching online.

You will have to check around online. It could cost more than a new TV. eBay has many at different prices. If you do find one cheap enough, yes a local TV repair shop should be willing to install it for you with labor charges tacked on. Call a few local TV repair shops and see what they are willing to do. If you find the TV replacement screen but the local shops will not replace it for you, you can do it yourself as it is not a difficult repair.

Have you checked to find pricing on a replacement screen? If you can find the correct screen, you can install it yourself. If you find that the screen replacement is too expensive, you may want to see what a comparable TV will cost brand new.

You may have a bad board. If there are no cracks on the screen, a board could have shorted or become damaged. You will have to take the TV apart and check each individual board to see what may be causing the issue. Plan on trying to find a T-con board for your Samsung TV model. That is the board that controls the LCD’s lines and pixels.

If the TV has an actual visible crack in the middle of the screen, and it is showing the half screen black and white, then you can purchase a replacement screen for around $120 US dollars or GBP 79.00. eBay has them and you can buy and replace yourself. Look and see what a new 42 LG costs and compare it with the new LG 42 replacement screen cost plus your labor. Remember to check that the replacement screen fits your current TV.

You may want to open the TV up and see if you can find a bad board affecting the screen. However… If pixels are affected then your screen is most likely bad. You can try finding a replacement board or screen (once you are done troubleshooting to find out what actually is needed) and order it online. If you open the TV, have a look at the circuit boards to make sure there is no obvious signs of burns or popped capacitors. If all boards look good visually, have a look at the inner screen for damage. Look on LCD PARTS as they have many parts you may need to fix your TV.

It is most likely a damaged screen and not a component. Replacement screens are available for a 50″ LED Magnavox. Have you taken the TV apart to check to see if the screen is cracked outside, internally, from the inside, or if possibly a board or component in the TV is making contact with the screen since it was hit?

You need to first find the generic panel and be sure the size is the exact same, obviously. Then, make sure the panel you are looking at says COMPATIBLE with your model and size TV. Not all generic screens are made the same. Be sure the different cable connections match yours and the areas where it slides into your TV match up. The word COMPATIBLE is what you need to read. If you have a Vizio 55″ 4k M series TV, then make sure the generic replacement screen says COMPATIBLE with Vizio 55″ 4k M series TV.

Are you aware of the screen getting hit or damaged by even though there is no physical damage? The screen could be damaged… LCD screens on TVs are made up of two thin layers of glass containing liquid crystal material between them. When the glass becomes damaged, debris infiltrates the crystal layer. If there is no damage to the screen, you may have a board or boards issue.

If the TV was hit by the remote control, meaning someone threw the remote control at the screen, then most likely this is NOT fixable. You can try to find a replacement screen but anything over 46″ is going to be somewhat expensive. You may get lucky and can find the exact TV you have on Craigslist that has a burned out control board and then swap out parts and make one good TV. Honestly your best bet is buying a new TV.

I have a JVC LT-32PM748 HDTV. It just fell over one day and cracked. It’s only cracked on the inside though, not the outside which is still smooth and unbroken. It still works as I plugged it in and I can see the menu text on the screen between the cracks. I saw a video that said you can peel back the film that’s cracked and fix this problem, but it wasn’t in depth. Also, when I tried to expose the screen, I took out all the screws and only the back part came off. I think I need a diagram to properly disassemble. Any ideas, sources? You should be able to buy any 32″ JVC replacement screen but they are usually not cheap. You could try Alibaba as they have just about every type of replacement screens for LED and LCD flat screen TVs.

My wife and I bought a Vizio VX32L TV from Sam"s Club in Feb 2008. By June 2009, there are red pixels or spots all over the screen. I contacted Vizio which told me to take pictures of the TV and the screen and email them the pictures to see what was wrong. I was then told it was out of warranty. I sent the email and photos and never heard from them. I waited and called again to have them just tell me that this was out of warranty and I needed to contact their out of warranty service company. I told them I have never had a TV that has only lasted 16 months and wanted to know what they can do to help. They said they make millions of TVs and that there is always going to be a few that go bad when you have electronics. I hope someone see this and finds out the truth about their crap.

Our 16-month old Vizio 32" HD TV just quite working. We called to ask for troubleshooting. Vizio customer care could care less and just told us to turn it off, hold power button for 30 seconds and turn back on. Nothing more happened. Then, we called for repairs. The repair shop charged us $50 just to look at it and then said it would be $350 to repair the TV we bought for $550. I thought I would have a TV for at least 5 years, not just 16 months. I am out $550 plus tax for the TV and an additional $50 to be told it is a bad brand and it would cost $350 to fix and would not be guaranteed after 90 days. The repair shop would not recommend we buy Vizio again.

I purchased Vizio 47 inch television, GV47L fhdtv. Two years and two months later, the screen is blank and no sound. It was out of warranty. Estimate to repair was $425. I spent about $1600 to purchase. Is this a common problem with Vizio? I have read many complaints similar on the internet. Also, after speaking with Vizio about repair, I was contacted by a person stating I should have bought an extended warranty. I am now in the process of trying to find another estimate locally. I also purchased another Vizio TV in November 2008. I have had one problem with it turning off by itself. Vizio screen went up long before the Sony which was purchased at least two years earlier. I am very dismayed because I know defense contractors rely heavily on Vizio products in equipment which is supposed to keep our troops safe. I plan to write their Congressman and request an inquiry into the suitability of Vizio as a supplier to defense contractors. I am willing to join class action suit against them for providing defective equipment. I am very disappointed both in their results and in their response to consumer complaints. Paying for cable and not having a 42 inch screen to watch it on is quite annoying but not as frightening as thinking about the thousands of lives that could be lost if one of their shipboard displays goes bad. We have a larger TV but that is not the point.

We purchased a Vizio 50"" plasma TV less than three years ago. Last night, the TV made a popping sound and now it no longer works. We bought directly from the company and our warranty was expired, so we are hard-pressed to find somebody to help us. Our first call to Vizio resulted in them having us call the repair techs they use. After repeated calls and several messages, we have yet to hear back from them. I began researching on the internet and found that tons of people have had the same problem with their plasma. I called Vizio back saying that we couldn"t get a hold of their tech people and they sent us to another tech company they use.

Unfortunately, this company has no service reps in our area. When I told the Vizio guy about all the complaints I read about, he said basically that plasmas break easily and he was surprised that ours lasted this long. He went on to say that many companies are no longer making plasma TVs because of all of the problems. We"ve also called other techs in our area and they either don"t service Vizios or they don"t make house calls. Our TV is mounted and we have a small car. We purchased a Vizio 42" LCD online through Dell in January 2008. Last month, I read an article in Orange Coast magazine about the owner of Vizio and his struggles with his life. I was really pleased with my Vizio and thought we made a good investment. Then, last month, the Vizio went dead! I finally unplugged and plugged it back in. All I got were vertical lines on the screen. Vizio was contacted and I was told I was out of my one-year warranty period and they would not do anything about it. We had the TV for 15 1/2 months. We then contacted Dell and they said they could not help us and we should call Vizio.

We called Vizio again and they instructed us to have a technician come out. The tech (PVS Electronics) came out and determined that it needed a new "panel". He told us he contacted Vizio and they told him they don"t carry the part for the TV. I am so disappointed and frustrated with Vizio. This is a horrible product, quality and customer service. I expected this TV to last at least 5 years! We will not be purchasing a Vizio again nor will we be recommending a Vizio to any friends or families. I exchanged a defective Vizio 42" plasma flat panel TV. The TV was purchased across town at another Wal-Mart. They could not exchange the TV (out of stock), and sent me to the Burgess Road store, which had the TV in stock. The TV"s sales price had been reduced by $100.00, but they did not offer to pay me the difference. Had I simply returned the TV, I would have received the full price I paid, and then could have purchased the reduced price model across town.

I purchased a Vizio LCD TV with model number L42hdtv10A 2/27/2007. Remote no longer will control the TV. I changed remotes; however, the TV is the culprit we believe.
