just to recap quickly: one day I turned on my laptop and there was a big nasty crack down the screen running from the top in a jagged line across to the side. the machine was never dropped, hit or abused in any way, so to anyone out there who doubts that this kind of thing can just happen... well, it can.

anyway, after taking the machine to an authorised repair centre, instead of contacting apple for a warranty repair as I"d asked them to do, they just sent me a quote to replace the screen at a cost of around 950€. now, if I"d dropped my computer, or some accident had happened to it, I would have just had to swallow it and accept that this is how things go. but seeing as nothing like that had ever happened, it"s a little harder to come around to thinking you are going to have to shell out for something that obviously was defective and snapped all of its own accord. the repair centre suggested that if I wasn"t happy with the quote I should take it up directly with apple..

so there you go, I was obviously quite happy with this and at the risk of sounding like a fanboy broken record, the apple consultants I spoke with were pretty decent and reasonable about the whole thing.

If I could just pull out £600, I would but the thing is, it’s taken me 2 years as a student to save money to even purchase the MacBook. The Specialist then proceeded to repeatedly press his thumb on the display which made more vertical lines appear (this made me really unhappy) and possibly even make the crack worse. Admittedly, I should’ve purchased AC+, and it was on my radar, but I’d forgotten and before I knew it I was 21 days over the 60 day purchase period. However, something like this shouldn’t just happen randomly and the automatic response shouldn’t be “You should’ve purchased AC+“ — it almost feels to me that they just know their products are not as durable as they once were. Nonetheless, a couple of Google and Twitter searches and I’m now discovering a number of people with the same problem as me and yet Apple have stated they aren’t familiar with one single case. The law firm Bursor and Fisher filed a class action lawsuit against Apple this week over unusually common screen cracks on M1 MacBooks, reports 9to5Mac. The firm is accusing Apple of knowingly selling laptops with fragile displays that tend to crack under normal use in some cases and then refusing to repair them without charge. Bursor and Fisher is now seeking compensation for all expenses associated with repairs.

While Apple"s latest 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks based on the M1 system-on-chip received great reviews and made many owners happy on launch, there is also a large number of customers who have experienced unexpected screen cracks and were forced to pay $600 ~ $850 to Apple for repairs. Apple insists that screen cracks were not its fault, but were caused by mishandling or by a small item or particle becoming lodged between the keyboard and screen.

Last week, class action law firm Migliaccio & Rathod LLP said it had begun looking for owners of Apple"s latest MacBooks with cracked LCDs to make "potential legal claims against" the company. Apparently, lawyers from Bursor & Fisher were quicker, so they filed the case 5:21-cv-07109, Almeida v. Apple this week.

"The M1 MacBook is defective, as the screens are extraordinarily fragile, cracking, blacking out, or showing magenta, purple and blue lines and squares, or otherwise ceasing to function altogether," the lawsuit reads.

Truth to be told, Apple issued a notice on August 27(opens in new tab) asking owners of MacBooks not to use any camera covers, palm rest covers, or keyboard covers with their laptops because "the clearance between the display (screen) and the top case is engineered to tight tolerances [which is why] leaving any material on your display, keyboard, or palm rest might interfere with the display when it"s closed and cause damage to your display."

That plaintiff wants Apple to compensate the cost of repairs for himself and other people with similar problems as well as award "reasonable attorney"s fees and costs." But screen repairs are very costly, just like lawyers in the U.S. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Apple will admit the issue and what the plaintiff and people similarly situated will get from the "Think different" company.

Apple doesn"t sell replacement parts to users, only to their authorized resellers and service centers. However, some used Apple screens are available in the aftermarket, as, for instance from ifixit.com.

C) Buy a used MacBook (perhaps you could find one with broken electronics, or a bad keyboard or inoperative logic board) and take your chances that its screen will be good;

D) Find a non-authorized repair shop that can replace the screen (thus offloading the "where to get the part" challenge onto the shop, along with the risk that the "new" screen won"t work); or

MacBook Pro - These are the original MacBook Pros made from 2006 to 2012. They come in three sizes: 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch measured diagonally from the top-left to bottom-right corners. The model name, MacBook Pro, is written on the bezel beneath the screen, and the power button is located on the upper right corner of the chassis. Depending on the type of damage, it is possible to repair these Macs by replacing only the glass panel or LCD. In some cases, both panels need to be replaced to display properly.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display - The 13-inch and 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro Retina models were introduced in 2012 and feature much greater resolution displays and more powerful hardware than their predecessors. Retina Macs can be identified by their thinner chassis, lack of the name on the screen bezel, and the placement of the power button on the keyboard instead of on the chassis. If the screen on the Retina model is damaged, the entire display assembly must be replaced.

If your Mac"s screen is not performing as intended, there are a few symptoms that indicate that critical damage has occurred. Many Apple computers feature a glass panel atop an LCD panel, both of which may undergo damage. When damage occurs requiring screen replacement, a simple search on eBay will help you find what you need. Some common repairable issues include:

Cracks - These are some of the most easily identifiable forms of display damage. Cracks, similar to those seen in a broken windshield, are the result of blunt force damage to the glass of the MacBook. They can occur after the laptop has been dropped or banged. Cracks are easily observable whether the machine is powered on or off.

Distorted image - Visual anomalies include lines, unusual coloration, and blotches of black or distorted colors on an otherwise clear image on the screen. These distortions may occur after the device has undergone physical damage and can only be seen when the Mac is powered on. If you have a distorted image and cracks, it is possible that both panels of your MacBook are damaged.

Black display - If your Apple MacBook"s screen is totally black, it can be more difficult to determine the cause. While damage to the display is a definite possibility, this can also be caused by other hardware issues, such as a power supply failure or problems with software.

Apple is aware of this, and they train their employees to suggest forgoing a repair. Instead, they suggest purchasing a new device, while they recycle your broken MacBook free of cost.

Not all broken MacBooks occur because of an accident. Sometimes technology simply gets old. Years of use put a strain on a technological device, and natural wear and tear occur.

Age can show up in a MacBook as random shutdowns, a broken keyboard or trackpad, shortened battery lifetime, port issues, or overheating problems. These problems are all costly to fix and can even be expensive even for older models.
