I get this question from friends and clients fairly regularly. What kind of recommendations do you have for a touch screen in an exhibit for my budget?

I originally posted this on June 21, 2017, last week I did a presentation at the New Mexico Association of Museums conference and wanted embed my presentation. I"ve also updated the content to include some more ideas.

Cons: The Pi is a wonderful thing for the price, but it isn"t a super powerful computer. You won"t be able to run really fancy, graphically intensive programs on this. Also, the screen isn"t big - only 7" diagonal. Finally, I am not sure I"m ready to guarantee that this is museum quality hardware that can withstand children banging on it every day.

Cons: I"ve heard a lot bad about using them in exhibits when they"re mounted. They tend to overheat and break down. They"re really not made for that kind of thing. Also has a small screen.

Project Ideas: So they tend to work pretty well as reference guides for docents, but that can also backfire. I"ve been to museums where instead of interfacing with visitors, the docents have their nose down on the tablet and are just reading stuff to them. It"s pretty silly, frankly. Visitors are also capable of Googling things.

Pros: Small and inexpensive. Great for streaming media, also can purchase in Enterprise Mode if you want to manage a bunch of them or unlock other options. They"re compatible with some touchscreens, but you"re likely better off using something else if you"re trying to create a touchscreen kiosk program.

Project Ideas: One particular project that I know this is being used for is the ViewSpace theater in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. The old computer died, so now they"re streaming the content using a Chromebox.

Cons: I"ve seen these get broken into a lot in exhibits. Apparently there are some better ways to lock them down now, though. Small screen. If you want to have your app run on it, you have to go through the Apple Store even if you don"t want it to run anywhere else.

Cons: Make sure you build a good case for this thing. I"ve seen people break into these with a flash drive if you don"t block all the ports. Also not a good choice if you want a huge screen.

Pros: This is a really unique piece of hardware that allows you to include physical pieces in your interactive. You also get two touchscreens for the price of one, which is a good deal. There are free apps that you can download from the Sprout marketplace that are pretty neat - there"s a measuring app, an app that allows you to create stop-motion videos, one that lets you convert currency, and many more.

Cons: Sometimes difficult to work with. On the first version, the hardware was a little finicky. I had to have one of the touch mats replaced, but on the other hand, the support staff was really friendly and mailed the parts right away. Hopefully they"ve improved that. Also, the buttons to turn it on and off are in a really conspicuous place, so you should be mindful of how you use it in your space.

Cost: Touch screens range from ~$250 for the smallish ones (in which case you should just buy an all-in-one PC) to $1600 for a 55" to $11k for an 80" one!

Pros: You can get exactly what you need to run really awesome software that makes a huge visual impact. They"re also flat screens, so you have a lot of options for embedding it in the wall and making a seamless experience.

Cons: Software cost will be a little bit higher than a typical touchscreen because you have to spend more time on the installation and testing. Don"t expect to get perfect touch capability unless you buy an expensive all-in-one setup. This is better for more experiential interactives. Also, make sure you plan this for a dark room - if you want to put it somewhere near a window, expect to pay A LOT of money for a projector!

Project Ideas: One of my favorite things I"ve seen with this is an interactive sandbox (shown above). You move the sand around with your hands and then it projects a topographical map on it. A fun program that my colleagues at Highlands did for a museum in Las Cruces is a thing where you step on dinosaur footprints to learn more about what dinosar made them. All kinds of good stuff!

Cons: Expensive, debatable how long they last. I"ve heard that they aren"t projected to last much more than 3 years, but you can replace the touch screen if you need to.

If you really want to make a statement and put something huge in your space, think about a touch wall. They"re not as limited by light as a projection, and they"ll definitely turn heads. These can either be purchased as straight - up video or as touchscreens.

Cost: Goes up exponentially! You"re looking at $50k - 100k for the screens alone. You also need to get a beefy computer with a really beefy graphics card to be able to handle running a program on multiple screens simultaneously.

Cons: Very expensive! You"ll need to talk to a company that specializes in them. For my research, I talked to Planar Technology and they were helpful and great even though they knew I couldn"t buy anything. They make professional grade products, which is important. You don"t want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a product that will break or not be able to hold up to the rigors of a museum environment.

The choice to use a touchscreen, keyboard, or both should be based on the application software and how much data the user may be expected to input.  A touchscreen works best on a larger screen size when the user is presented with clear touch choices on the kiosk screen, with little or no keyboard input required.  If some keyboard input is required, a virtual keyboard can be used for that.

Touch screen interactive kiosks, also known as self serve kiosks, place 24/7 access to products and services in any location for the benefit and convenience of users and customers. Researchers may use, free of charge, copies of low-resolution images from the Collections Portal for non-commercial use, such as illustrating a school paper or website, or for study. Each image must be accompanied by the following credit line: [Name of creator] / Museum of the City of New York. [Accession number]. If the image will be posted online, please provide a link back to the catalog record in the collections portal.

Image reproductions must be accompanied by the credit line supplied by the Museum. The credit line will appear on the final invoice or permission form.

The Museum will be furnished, free of charge, with one copy of the published work within thirty days of printing. Please send the copy to the attention of:

In some cases, the Museum owns only the physical object and does not assume copyright ownership. The Museum’s reproduction and/or high-resolution access charges do not include fees owed to the rights holder(s). The Museum will inform the researcher if it does not own copyright to an object, and will assist to the best of its ability to provide contact information for the rights holder(s). However, clearing copyright and any other rights that may be vested in an image is entirely the responsibility of the end user.

Prints are produced from the digital images available on the online Collections Portal and are exact representations of the object in the Museum’s collection. The Museum does not touch-up, color-correct, crop, or otherwise manipulate the digital images prior to printing.

Theme parks, museums, visitor centers, trade shows and conferences – the list goes on and on – cannot go back to what we were used to before the events of the past months. Ultimately it does not matter what any of us in the various related industries think about all of this. If we are to have visitors return and get back to a functioning economy, we have to create environments that are safe, and perceived to be safe for patrons in order to alleviate fears, real or imagined

The QuickSilver™ system is a complete, advanced and well-established AV solution with several successful installations, including the first visitor center where the only printed graphics is the wall paper – everything else is covered with pixels, and driven by QuickSilver™. We’ve always had various inputs including a range of different sensor inputs, and different types of outputs. During this time, we identified different needs, and have continued to work on further developments and extensions for QuickSilver™ to create new contact-less ways to activate exhibits. This has resulted in a new subsection of our QuickSilver™ product line: the QS7200 Touchless Technology series. Not only that, but since we already had an agnostic user interface that allows for staff to control our systems with just about any smart device, we decided to expand those capabilities within our TeaParty show controller. That in turn allowed us to provide a safe way to allow our visitors to activate exhibits by using their own devices.

Of course, all of this needs to be combined with other factors within venues. These spaces will need crowd management to ensure physical distancing (we dislike the use of the term ’social distancing’ as that, in our opinion, is the last thing we need). Venues can also implement one-way pulsed visitor flow, mask and glove requirements for employees, and options such as (far) UVC sterilization of air conditioner returns and restrooms. Even so, none of that helps unless we can provide touch-free systems to make sure our visitors are comfortable in the space.

We have four different touchless ways of dealing with touchscreens. None of them affect the basic use of the touchscreen – you can still use that too. You can either convert an ordinary monitor to be controlled, or you can add one of these options to the touchscreen’s functionality. Anyone who prefers to use a touchscreen can do so.  However, if someone doesn’t want to touch a touchscreen, there are options.

We have produced a new QuickSilver™ no-touch touchscreen solution that can be added to a touchscreen interactive, or it can be used to convert a monitor to make it interactive. Just stand in front of the screen, look at it, and your facial movement will be enough to guide the cursor. If you want to activate a button, look at it for a second or so, and it’ll be ‘pressed’. This is a very affordable optical solution that converts full touch functionality to facial tracking – no contact required. You’ll see the cursor on this screen – simply move it by looking around the monitor.

If we are using infrared surrounds in front of the touchscreen, we can move the touch overlay away from the monitor or monitors. A disadvantage of this approach is that you have increased parallax, but if the ‘buttons’ on the screen are large enough to accommodate that parallax then this is perfectly acceptable as an approach. We have previously used this on exhibits, and it works well.

We can put an image of the various ‘buttons’ on the screen that can be activated on a graphic panel (or we could line them up on the screen), and by reaching out to the appropriate button, you can activate it. A QuickSilver™ linear sensor allows you to select different ranges to activate different ‘buttons’ – so from 2-5 inches you’d activate the first buttons, from 6-9 inches the next one, etc. One sensor can be used to select multiple ‘buttons’ on the screen or on the graphics. This image shows a touchscreen that has been converted to touchless technology with 8 videos controlled by one sensor.

The final alternative for now is our Bring-Your-Own-Device scenario. Since QuickSilver™ is designed with all kinds of user interfaces, it was easy for us to add a BYOD type of interface. Activate the camera on your phone or other smart device tablet, scan the QR code mounted with the interactive, and the control screen for the interactive comes up on your device.

Of course the BYOD device option makes for an interesting solution- and although we had not mentioned it before, it is completely possible to use this with our QuickSilver™ systems. We can allow visitors to control touchscreen based or electro-mechanical interactives, trigger media, events, narrations, or sound bytes in our 3D audio systems. Just scan the QR code and you’ll get a tailored display on your phone that will allow you to trigger narratives, effects, or any other audio tracks.

Let’s look at the standard button. Since the virus can live on any button made out of plastic or stainless for up to 72 hours, nobody wants to touch buttons. You cannot realistically keep it safe – you’d have to clean the button, figure out how to clean the gap around it, and clean the local area after every use, something that cannot really be done. Visitors could use gloves, but an environment where you need to use gloves at all times is obviously not a great confidence builder, so we have produced ’touchless buttons’. As part of the system settings, you can set the minimum and maximum distance from the surface that the ‘button’ is meant to be activated at – so you could select a range of 2 to 6 inches, or from 2 to 3 feet. Of course when the button is activated, it is quite possible to generate a satisfying click or other audible feeback, but no touch is required.

As an alternative, our BYOD option described above would be perfectly fine too. On-screen buttons would allow visitors to activate whichever function they want.  Multiple users could be logged into the same controls, or we can time limit controls, or make sure that only the last person to scan the QR code can control the exhibit.

QuickSilver™ has been extended with these options, so that it is now possible to use any combination of technology with touchless options to create exhibits that allow your visitors to be comfortable, and we’re working on additional sensor technology to take this even further.
