We have been made aware that customers of the New Speed Triple 1200 RS with Apple iPhone handsets will initially have limited functionality using the My Triumph Connectivity System. This is to be rectified soon in a future instrument software update for this model expected in late July/early August.

I"m sure you"ve all seen the impressive Scrambler 1200 TFT screen and heard about all the connectivity that is now built in. Well that functionality is not only being rolled out to all new TFT screen models, but it will also be available as an upgrade for any existing models with TFT screens. Read on for details.

The new TFT Connectivity System is going to be rolled out from late Spring 2019. It will be available on all new TFT Screen Triumphs (that is those with the multi-colour screens), but will also be able to be fitted to any existing Triumph with a TFT Screen by your local Triumph dealer.

The system features the first Integrated GoPro control system on a motorcycle. GoPro has been going through a bit of a lull in sales recently so this partnership may help a bit with camera sales, but I"m not sure how useful it will be in general riding. There are other cameras that are cheaper and better of course, but they won"t be able to be controlled by the TFT Screen.

Another feature is turn-by-turn navigation powered by Google. This is the first time Google have partnered with a premium motorcycle manufacturer. The navigation will need you to have the new (free) MyTriumph app installed on your phone - which will be available for Android™ and iOS™.

If you have a TFT Triumph and want to upgrade then you will need to visit your dealer to have the Bluetooth module fitted and the Software update applied.

Naked bikes are generally a sports or performance motorcycle that has had the bodywork removed. The footrests are moved forward and the bars are either straight or slightly raised to produce an aggressive sitting up position.

It was the Italians that led the charge of the factory naked bike with the release of the Ducati Monster in 1993 closely followed by the original 1994 Triumph Speed Triple. After that the gloves were off and all manufacturers scrambled to create their own version.

The Brutale is stripped of everything except the basic necessities, displaying to the world in a ruthless fashion the inner workings of the Brutale motor.

The KTM 1290 Super Duke R is another bike that has implemented semi-active suspension technology, and every detail of the bike has been looked at and revised with each generation of the model.

The inline 3 cylinder engine provides plenty of power and the performance is definitely up there with the best naked motorcycles available. The triple cylinder harks back to the days of the original Triumph Trident.

It comes with fully adjustable Ohlins suspension front and back; Brembo brake calipers; Metzeler RACETEC RR tires and 5 riding modes controlled by the TFT instruments.

Triumph states the bike to be street focused but track ready and boasting performance figures like it does, I’m sure the 1200 RS would be more than at home on the track in first position.

The Yamaha MT-10 is the first production motorcycle to be fitted with Ohlins next generation electronically controlled suspension, which means riders can choose between three semi-active damping modes and three manual modes.

A host of electronics are equipped on the model including: 6 IMU rider aids; Advanced Quick Shift; Four mode Yamaha Ride Control; TFT display; Electronic cruise control.

Other tech features include lean-angle stability control, ABS with cornering pre-control and Wheelie control. All of which are controlled by the Ride Command display, which also pairs via bluetooth to your smartphone.

The original Triumph Trident was the fastest thing on two wheels, the latest release bearing the Trident name may be a triple-cylinder but it isn’t intended to be the fastest thing on two wheels, it is just meant to be a really great middleweight roadster.

Just because the Trident is a middleweight doesn’t mean that Triumph have slacked on it. The bike is full of useful rider features, like multiple ride modes, traction control, ABS, and ride by throttle.

Powered by a 765cc triple cylinder engine, which has been developed by Triumph’s Moto2 team, the Street Triple RS is performance focused Street Triple.

No expense has been spared, the RS comes with: Showa front forks and Ohlins rear suspension; Brembo brake calipers; aluminium alloy wheels; aluminium frame and swingarm; 6 speed transmission with Triumph Quick Shift.

There are no cutbacks taken either. The LCD display is customisable for your rider info, Nissin radial mount calipers and Showa suspension are used, and the styling gives a big bike feel with sharp angular lines and impressive detailing.

MAJOR ENGINE UPDATE: The Street Triple’s characterful 765cc triple engine is Euro 5 compliant with a more performance-focused feel, having been precision-upgraded by the same expert team who developed Triumph’s Moto2™ engine.

EURO 5 ENGINE UPDATES: The Street Triple RS has exhilarating power and low-down performance from an updated 765cc engine, developed by Triumph’s Moto2™ engine team. Now Euro 5 ready with higher precision machining on the crankshaft, clutch and balancer for less rotational inertia, the result is a more responsive and refined ride.

MORE TORQUE: Peak torque of 58 LB-FT @ 9,350 rpm on the RS model is higher than the previous generation, with an impressive 9% stronger spread of torque across the mid-range. The bike’s new balance pipe smooths the torque curve for even more addictive Street Triple power delivery.

MORE POWER: With a high peak power figure of 121 HP @ 11,750 rpm, the new generation RS also delivers 9% more horsepower in the mid-range for an even more thrilling and dynamic ride.

REFINED GEARBOX: A smoother more refined gearbox has short 1st and 2nd gear ratios for exceptional acceleration and slick gear changes. The higher precision machining enabled the removal of the anti-backlash gears, which reduces overall mass and adds a higher level of riding refinement.

Stylistically, the Ducati DesertX is very unique — and definitely currently the best-looking enduro in this publication’s opinion. It has twin front headlamps — themselves a rarity in motorcycling these days (though you’ll see them on the Triumph Rocket 3 and the Moto Guzzi V85TT, both of which have graced these pages).

Electronics for the Ducati DesertX is also enduro-specific, with two ride modes dedicated to off-road performance: Enduro and Rally. Even the display has a Rally mode. And you can deactivate cornering ABS, should you need to for off-road work.

All in, the Ducati Panigale V4 SP is not just a good-looking bike, it’s also a very unique one — sure to be a collector’s item worthy of display in my cafe (when that happens).

Despite the low-tech foundation, it has a lot of modern technology in there, like cruise control, power modes, a TFT display that can connect to your phone, and of course ABS.

I snuck this into last year’s list because I heard it was coming, but this is actually a 2022 model, already in many people’s hands in the 2nd half of 2021.

The 2022 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa is the third generation in the Hayabusa line. As with the previous bikes, the 3rd-gen Hayabusa looks like it was designed for one thing primarily: top-end speed. And therein lies a lot of its attractiveness! It has a very purposeful design.

In past years we’ve featured the Triumph Thruxton R, another good-looking bike, but this year I’m happy to include a bike from a different part of Triumph’s range — the Speed Triple 1200 RR.

The Triumph Speed Triple was, originally, the standard/naked version of the Daytona superbike. But that hasn’t been the case for over a decade after the Triumph Dayton 955i was discontinued in 2006. Since the 1050 motor, the Triumph Speed Triple has been a streetfighter or sport standard in its own right.

Things have come full circle, and Triumph have put fairings back onto the highest-spec Triumph Speed Triple RS, and bring to us the Speed Triple RR — with clip-on handlebars to boot, stickier Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V3 tyres, and last but not least, Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 electronically adjustable semi-active suspension.

But like the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR above, the Yamaha YZF-R7 got a few improvements besides the fairing and clip-on handlebars. The YZF-R7 has a fully adjustable inverted fork, radial-mounted calipers, and a Brembo radial master cylinder.

As one who bought a Gen 2 XRT for 2 up touring here are a few points to add to Paul’s apparent solo review.Like Paul, my bike has covered over 10k of almost trouble free miles in 3 years of ownership.

– The Gen 2 bike is heavier its successor because it cam as standard with engine bars & Givi manufactured, Triumph pattern pannier rails which are a complete disaster for “petite pillions”. Givi’s own rails resolve this problem. When launching the Gen3 model, Triumph removed the previously price inclusive bars & rails, claimed an 11kg weight saving, & then charged £600 to refit them as accessories!

– Much is written about the “no speed” maneuverability which must haunt salesmen in showroom demos but, once on the move, the TSAS suspension is a complete revelation (imo far superior to BMW’s standard weedy springs) which adjusts to self level with all loads, resulting in excellently predictable handling. Potential owners should note however, that the self adjusting ride height does not “settle”, & can be a problem for anyone who is “vertically challenged”. Like Paul, I am 5’11”, so there is no problem. Triumph must have realised this in developing the “low” models, but then removed the very important centre stand (my opinion) in order to increase the reduced ground clearance.

– As for Triumph dealers, the quality of service & value for money can be variable but as “a rule of thumb”, the independents are more reliable than their (car based) multi-outlets.

The new MultistradaV4 has a new four-cylinder engine, too, replacing the V2 used in previous models. The new powerplant uses springs and rockers to open and close the valves instead of the Desmodromic system for which Ducatis are famous. With 2 mm more bore than the V4 engine found on other Ducs, the power and torque curves are flatter and more accessible. Peak power is 170 hp at 10,500 rpm (a 25% increase), while torque tops out at 92.2 lb-ft at 8,750 revs. The new valvetrain stretches service intervals to 36,000 miles—it was 6,000 miles on the first-gen Multistradawhen that model came out in 2003.

There are four riding modes (sport, touring, urban, and enduro), all displayed on the bike’s new 5.5-inch—or optional 6.5-inch—TFT screen. The first three modes are for on-road and the third is for off-road.

This is the grandaddy OG of adventure bikes. The GS line launched 40 years ago with the 1980 R 80 G/S (Gelande und Strassen, dirt and street). More than 1.2 million GS models have been built over six generations. Since Hubert Auriol’s victory in 1981, BMW motorcycles have won Paris Dakar four times. In the hands of regular adventure riders, they have circled the globe countless times.

This is the third generation of Suzuki’s V-Strom, a name spread out over 19 years of adventure biking. Today, you can get a V-Strom with just 645ccs for $8,904, all the way up to a full-zoot 1050XT Adventure for $17,049 before destination. The bike I had for most of 2020 was just below that top-line model, a V-Strom 1050XT that stickered for $14,849.

Triumph has produced a Tiger model since 1937 when it started with the Tiger 70, 80, and 90, with those numbers representing each model’s top speed. Today there are five 900 models (and no, that’s not top speed, it’s displacement); they range from $14,700 to $17,100; and five Tiger 1200s that go from $19,100 to $24,200. The 900 Rally Pro is a popular choice, with 93.9 hp and 64 lb-ft of torque from an 888cc inline-triple. Weighing in at 476 pounds wet, it should be light enough to get the most out of the power and torque on tap.

And if those options are too heavy for you, Triumph has updated its Tiger line-up to reflect the realm of adventure, with 660cc and 850cc offerings now available. Both of these models are available in a single trim, with the Tiger Sport 660 starting at $9495 while the Tiger 850 Sport starts at $11,995. Launched shortly after the Trident 660, the Tiger Sport 660 is built on a similar frame as the standard bike and rolls on 17-inch wheels, all powered by an inline triple-cylinder engine producing 80 hp and 47 lb-ft of torque. Minimal suspension travel and the 17-inch wheels make the smaller displacement Tiger suitable for minimal off-roading but help the model excel at all-around road riding manners.

In revamping its Tiger lineup, Triumph has created slots for all versions of the adventure lifestyle. The Tiger 1200 lineup is largely focused on competing with BMW and Ducati in grand-touring adventures, and the same can be said for the Tiger 900 series and the competing sizes of BMW GS and Ducati Multistrada. In order to round out the lineup with a true off-road machine, the British engineers took the parts bins and created the Tiger 850 Sport. Following the lineage of Tigers before it, the 850 Sport has an 888cc inline triple-cylinder engine that produces 84 hp and 60 lb-ft of torque. Notably, the 850 Sport rolls on a staggered set of wheels, with a 19-inch up front and a 17-inch out back, meaning the 423-pound model is more equipped for loose surfaces and trails than its smaller sibling.
