There are plenty of new and confusing terms facing TV shoppers today, but when it comes down to the screen technology itself, there are only two: Nearly every TV sold today is either LCD or OLED.

The biggest between the two is in how they work. With OLED, each pixel provides its own illumination so there"s no separate backlight. With an LCD TV, all of the pixels are illuminated by an LED backlight. That difference leads to all kinds of picture quality effects, some of which favor LCD, but most of which benefit OLED.

LCDs are made by a number of companies across Asia. All current OLED TVs are built by LG Display, though companies like Sony and Vizio buy OLED panels from LG and then use their own electronics and aesthetic design.

The better LCDs have local dimming, where parts of the screen can dim independently of others. This isn"t quite as good as per-pixel control because the black areas still aren"t absolutely black, but it"s better than nothing. The best LCDs have full-array local dimming, which provides even finer control over the contrast of what"s onscreen -- but even they can suffer from "blooming," where a bright area spoils the black of an adjacent dark area.

A rapid increase in liquid crystal display (LCD) panel prices has sharply narrowed the price gap between LCD panels and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays – the latter showing a downward trend due to increased supply. LCD panel prices have been climbing steeply since the first half of last year and rose to their highest level in almost four years this month, with Chinese manufacturers keeping LCD panel supply under control to shore up prices. By contrast, LG Display Co., the world"s largest OLED TV panel maker, has been ramping up OLED production to accelerate its penetration into the TV market.

According to market researcher Omdia on Apr. 19, the average price of the industry-standard 55-inch OLED panel dropped to $510 in the first quarter of this year, compared to $200 for LCD panels. Year on year, OLED panel prices declined 8.1% on average, whereas LCD panel prices spiked 73.9%. As a result, the price gap between the two has narrowed to $310 from $440.

Since the beginning of this month, LCD panel prices increased further to hit $206 on average, their highest level in three years and 10 months. It marked the first time for the average LCD panel price to top $200 since July 2017.

​"TV makers have a shortage of LCD panel supplies, with their inventory falling to 60% of normal levels," said KB Securities analyst Kim Dong-won. "They will also continue to suffer supply shortages of other major components such as glass substrates and ICs (integrated circuits) through the second half of this year."

Since South Korean panel makers led by Samsung Display Co. and LG Display pulled out of the low-margin TV LCD market from the second half of last year, Chinese manufacturers led by BOE and CSOT have filled the void. They had rapidly expanded their presence in the LCD market, flooding the market with cheaper products such as 10th-generation panels measuring 2,900mm in width and 3,100mm in length. Chinese manufacturers are now scaling back on LCD panel production to bolster margins.

In the OLED market, by contrast, LG Display has been stepping up supply. Since its Guangzhou plant started operation in the second half of last year, LG"s glass substrate production for OLED panels has more than doubled to 130,000 units a month from 60,000 units. That led to the price cut of OLED TV panels.

Thanks to the reduced price gap with LCD panels, Omdia forecasts that global shipments of OLED TVs will climb to 5.80 million units this year, up 59% from 3.65 million in 2020.

​LG Display plans to boost its OLED TV panel shipments to as many as 8 million units this year from 4.5 million units in 2020. Based on its shipment goal, analysts expect global OLED TV sales in 2021 to double from last year"s number, with more than a 10% share in global TV sales.

Amid the rosy OLED TV market outlook, the focus is now on whether Samsung Electronics Co. and China"s TCL and Haier will make their forays into the market.

Demand for large-sized OLED panels is expected to be around 7.2 million units this year, but this will increase to 10 million units in 2023 and 12 million units in 2024, Yi said at an online conference on Friday.

LG Display is currently the sole supplier of large-sized OLED panels. Its current production capacity for the panels is around 10 million units a year. It has production lines in Paju, South Korea and Guangzhou, China.

Yi said LG Display may commence expansion of its capacity earlier than scheduled in light of this possibility. Last January, LG said it plans to start spending in expanding its Gen 10.5 (2940x3370mm) OLED production line in 2023. Yi expects LG Display to start investing no later than next year as it will take time to reach the production yield rate in a Gen 10.5 line, since the Gen 10.5 will be the 1st of its kind. Yi demand forecast is based on those from LG Electronics, Sony and other of LGD’s OLED panel customers.

Should the reports be true that Samsung Electronics will procure large-sized OLED panels from LG Display, the shortage would be pushed up by a year, he noted. In this scenario, LG Display will need to start expanding its capacity this year. The UBI Research CEO said that 1.8m large-sized OLED panels were shipped in Q221, an 186% Y/Y and a 13% increase sequentially.

At less than 7mm thick, they’re as svelte as most smartphones on the market although their weight (590g and 730g respectively) put them squarely in the tablet category.

For 10 years, OLED TVs have been regarded by videophiles (and by us) as blue-ribbon investments that are worth their steep prices if you value the highest-quality movie or gaming experience. Yet we’d suspect that many casual TV shoppers might not know about OLED TVs or why they’re so highly regarded. The conditions are ripe for that to finally change in 2022. With more OLED TVs coming from more manufacturers in more screen sizes, this could be the year OLEDs begin to move away from videophile territory and become a viable option for more people.

The history of flat-panel TVs has been written by two fundamentally different technological approaches to creating a TV image: transmissive displays versus emissive displays.

Transmissive displays operate by shining a backlight array through a liquid crystal element. You might know them by their more common names: LCD TVs or LED TVs. Crucially, the light- and color-producing parts of LCD/LED TVs are functionally and physically separate layers. I like to think of the liquid crystal and backlight as the meat and cheese on a sandwich, respectively.

In emissive displays, those functions aren’t separated. Each pixel (or picture element) produces its own light and color, so there’s no need for a backlight array. As you might have guessed, OLED TVs are emissive displays. For those who remember the brief reign of plasma as the must-have TV tech, plasma TVs were also emissive displays.

This independent pixel operation (independent from a backlight array and independent from every other pixel) allows emissive displays to greatly maximize contrast and produce richer colors. For example, when an OLED TV needs to display true black in a scene, it just turns those pixels off, whereas an LCD TV needs to find a way to block or turn off the backlight in that area of the screen. This is, in a nutshell, why OLED TVs are special. The ability to produce a true black on such a fine level increases the TV’s contrast (or the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of the image). The high level of contrast in an OLED TV can help your favorite movies and shows look downright jaw-dropping, which makes it an especially good choice to pair with high dynamic range (HDR) content.

As a bonus, because there’s no backlight array, OLED TVs tend to have excellent viewing angles, especially compared to LCD/LED TVs. This means you can watch them pretty comfortably from way off to either side.

Price has been the biggest barrier keeping most folks from having an OLED TV in their living rooms. OLED TVs have consistently carried higher price tags than high-performance LCD TVs—especially at screen sizes larger than 65 inches, where you could expect to pay at least 20% more. And “budget OLED” has never even been a category.

It wasn’t too long ago that manufacturing difficulties and relative scarcity painted a picture of exclusivity for OLED TVs, which kept the price high. While Sony and Samsung were the first to introduce OLED TVs, they quickly exited the market, leaving LG as the only brand selling OLEDs in the US for a time—and in a rather limited array of sizes and configurations. The earliest models had a range of issues, including an odd behavior colloquially called “vignetting” (where the edges of the screen look much darker than the middle), a tendency for darker gray elements to look yellowish-green, and concerns about uneven lifespan expectations among different colors. Those kinks were hammered out years ago, and manufacturers like Sony and Vizio have since joined LG in the US market, though LG Display has been the only company manufacturing the actual OLED TV panels. Yet the prices are still high compared with that of most LCD TVs.

Price isn’t the only consideration, either. OLED TVs are comparably much dimmer than similarly priced LCD/LED TVs. This boils down to operational mechanics: Individually operating pixels, the root of an OLED TV’s strength, can also be a weakness. In emissive displays, turning all the pixels to maximum brightness at the same time can damage the TV. So like plasma TVs before them, OLED TVs use a process called auto-brightness limiting, or ABL. Essentially, as more of the screen becomes bright, the total brightness is automatically limited to ensure safe operation.

In other words, a 2021 OLED TV could only get roughly half as bright as a similarly priced 2021 LCD/LED TV, especially those that use mini-LED backlights. However, it’s important to understand that those brightness numbers are discussed in terms of what’s called “reference brightness,” which describes the general/average light output that you’d notice when watching an OLED TV and an LCD TV side by side. For instance, very bright content that lights up the whole screen, such as a daytime sporting event, will look brighter on a high-performance LCD TV than an OLED TV.

But when considering overall screen contrast—the measure of a TV’s average or peak brightness against its black level, or minimum luminance level—OLED TVs tend to have the best contrast around. Because ABL usually kicks in only when large portions of the screen are bright, an OLED TV’s perceptual contrast (how bright the TV will seem given its black level) is usually much better than that of LCD TVs, especially with HDR content where small, specular areas of the screen are very bright.

However, all that functionality is why it’s important to have control over your room’s ambient lighting if you plan to buy an OLED TV. For example, as much as I love OLED TVs, I don’t have one in my living room—I have a Samsung Neo QLED LCD, which is bright enough to combat the San Diego sunshine that often bathes my home. There’s no point having a beautiful TV if you can’t see it! If you can sufficiently darken your viewing room when you need to, however, there aren’t many TVs that will look better than an OLED.

One other concern that some people have with OLED TVs is the potential for “burn-in” damage, ghostly after-image of content that has been on the screen for an extended period of time. Usually this image retention is temporary, but sometimes it’s permanent. The party line for OLED burn-in is that it shouldn’t occur during “normal” use, and we agree, especially because most modern OLED TVs have pixel-shifting and cell-repair processes built in to ensure that damage doesn’t occur. You can also mitigate burn-in further by lowering your OLED TV’s brightness when it’s convenient. However, if you do watch content with a stationary image (like a news ticker or the heads-up display in a video game) for many hours every single day, you may want to consider getting an LCD TV instead. Ultimately, we think burn-in is only a notable concern for a minor subset of OLED owners.

This year, we’re seeing a few key developments in the OLED market that could help it become a better option for more people. For one, LG and Sony have continued to refine their panels to improve overall brightness, and both are adding more screen sizes to their lineups, including smaller 42- and 48-inch models—which is great for not only gamers but also anyone who just wants a more affordable OLED TV that fits in a modest-sized room. Also, companies like Vizio and Skyworth are selling more affordably priced OLED TVs in the US. (You can read more specifics about the 2022 OLED lines in our guide to the best OLED TV.)

But the OLED news generating the most buzz is that Samsung is returning to the OLED game after almost a decade on hiatus. (Samsung introduced one of the very first OLED TVs back in 2012 but abandoned them shortly thereafter.) The company has a single OLED TV line this year, the S95B Series, but there’s an important caveat: Samsung manufactures its own OLED panels, and S95B TVs have QD-OLED displays, a new variant of OLED. QD-OLED displays combine OLED panels with quantum dots—microscopic nanocrystals more commonly used to pump up the color saturation in the best LCD/LED TVs. Sony also announced a QD-OLED model this year.

Because QD-OLED is brand new, we don’t yet know what benefits or improvements it may offer over LG’s WRGB OLED panels (video) beyond what can be assumed based on the underlying technologies: It should look really good. (We plan to test these new TVs to find out, of course.) The other good news? Samsung has announced pricing for its QD-OLED TVs, and while they’re not the most affordable ones you can buy this year, they also won’t break the bank compared with some of the premium OLED TVs being sold.

As the old saying goes, it’s never a good time to buy a new TV. There’s always newer technology or a better deal coming. Based on trends over the last decade, OLED isn’t going anywhere. In fact, the tech seems to be further cementing itself at the top of best TV lists everywhere. This year, there are more OLED TVs—in more screen sizes and from more manufacturers—than ever before, which makes it a generally good time to buy one. While the prices are still nothing to sneeze at, you have many more options than you used to.

On the other hand, it’s too soon to predict how Samsung’s return to the market will affect prices going forward. The relatively approachable price of Samsung’s new QD-OLED model could mean that buying an OLED TV in 2022 is a bit risky. If QD-OLED has better production yields than LG’s WRGB OLED, we could see an entire range of even more competitively priced models in 2023.

Unfortunately, the uncertainty of whether it’s the right time to buy a new TV is difficult to avoid, no matter how much you spend. But we are certain of one thing: Even if some radical shift in TV technology means your 2022 OLED isn’t the absolute best screen on the market a couple years from now, it will still look better than any TV you owned before it.

The Samsung S95B is our favorite OLED TV for 2022 because its QD-OLED design, which combines quantum dots with an OLED panel, makes it the brightest, most flexible OLED TV we’ve ever tested. Most OLED TVs excel in perfect darkness and struggle as more ambient light is introduced. While the S95B looks best in total darkness, it maintains its excellence in brighter rooms and really excels with HDR content that takes advantage of its unparalleled brightness and color production. The S95B supports the HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG high dynamic range formats (but not Dolby Vision) and has Filmmaker Mode to automatically show movies as the director intended. It’s also a very gaming-friendly TV, with a 120 Hz refresh rate and four HDMI 2.1 inputs. The S95B is only available in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes, but if one of those sizes works for you, this TV is an easy recommendation for any viewing environment.

When OLED hit the market a decade ago, it revolutionized our collective idea of what a top-tier TV could look like, due primarily to its deep black levels and high contrast. Its main performance weakness compared with LCD TVs has been its lower light output: For years, we’ve seen improvements in luminance only by inches, with 2021’s best models doing their best to hit 800 nits of brightness. Meanwhile, the best LCD TVs have soared to well beyond 1,000 nits.

The S95B’s ability to overcome that hurdle is one of the primary reasons it’s our new top pick. The QD-OLED panel keeps everything that’s great about OLED and closes the brightness gap with quantum-dot LCDs, cresting to over 1,000 nits of brightness without any of the potential downsides we see from LED backlights in LCD TVs—like blooming or glow around bright objects in a dark scene.

My living room is often awash with an amount of sunlight that most OLED TVs struggle to overcome, so the S95B’s improved brightness was immediately appreciable. OLED TVs generally limit their full-screen brightness when most of the on-screen content is bright (such as during daytime sporting events)—but the S95B’s high brightness means it has more overall luminance to work with, so this limitation is much less noticeable. Especially if you’re watching HDR content with Samsung’s Intelligent Mode enabled (which is not at all color accurate, but makes for a very punchy image), the S95B tends to go at full power, raising luminance uniformly across the spectrum so that everything looks brighter—and very bright objects look brilliantly intense. At times I found myself marveling at details like the glow of a computer monitor on a character’s face, or wincing as the camera shifted to show a sunny window over someone’s shoulder. It’s not a treatment videophiles may wholly relish, but most folks will love how it looks in their living room at midday.

The S95B’s unique panel design also improves color brightness and saturation. Because it uses quantum dots, the QD-OLED panel is similar to an RGB (red/green/blue) OLED panel. Almost any other OLED TV you buy today uses an LG Displays WRGB panel, meaning there’s a white subpixel included with the usual trio of red, green, and blue subpixels. A WRGB panel is cheaper to produce and induces less wear and tear on the primary subpixels over time, but it comes at a cost to color saturation at higher brightness levels. For example, to achieve a very bright green, WRGB OLEDs (like the LG C2) use the white subpixel and the green subpixel together, combining them to make a brighter green. However, as the picture gets brighter overall, the white subpixel gets driven more, and there is an inherent reduction in color purity.

After almost a decade of seeing a WRGB panel’s handling of colors, there is a noticeable improvement with Samsung’s quantum-dot-equipped OLED. This TV can drive its red, green, and blue primaries into unpolluted luminance ranges beyond most OLED TVs from the past decade, and the end result is downright grin-inducing, though it’s occasionally a touch fanciful in the less accurate picture modes.

In direct comparisons with the runner-up LG C2, the S95B’s higher peak brightness (around 750 to 800 nits for the C2, and 950 to 1,000 nits for the S95B) makes only a small yet still an appreciable difference, but the improvement in high-brightness color saturation is quite significant. With both TVs set to the most accurate Filmmaker Mode, darker and dimmer content looks similar enough, but you can see the difference between the WRGB and RGB OLED panels when brighter, more saturated colors are on display, regardless of whether content is SDR or HDR. I noticed it while watching Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+, where the red telltales on the villains’ armor had a more vivid pop on the S95B.

Measuring the S95B confirmed most of what I was seeing while watching real-world content: The TV is bright enough for sunlit rooms. Even in the HDR Filmmaker Mode, it hits 1,000-plus nits, but the SDR Filmmaker Mode is much more subdued, topping out closer to 150 nits. In other picture modes, you’ll get a range of average brightness levels closer to 400 or 500 nits. It’s also worth noting that Samsung’s recent firmware updates have caused the S95B’s overall light output to fluctuate: It originally hit closer to 1,500 nits but has been reined in by the updates. While this dampens some of the initial excitement about the S95B’s capabilities, we think 1,000 nits (a benchmark for HDR formats) is still an achievement for OLED TVs. The decrease in brightness should also extend the panel life to a certain degree.

Whether you’re watching SDR or HDR video, the Filmmaker Mode is the most accurate picture mode for dark-room viewing. (This wasn’t true when the S95B was first introduced, but firmware updates have fixed some early accuracy issues.) Staunch videophiles may want to do a bit of calibrating, but the average viewer will be nothing but impressed. While watching Dune on Ultra HD Blu-ray in 4K/HDR, shadow details were preserved well during dark-room viewing, and the HDR Filmmaker Mode showed HDR video at the correct brightness level across most of the signal range. Occasionally, near-black details looked a little too bright, but overall the nighttime sequences on Arrakis looked invitingly balanced and subtle. There is one unusual black-level-related behavior that we’ll discuss in Flaws but not dealbreakers, but it doesn’t crop up during dark-room use.

The S95B is also great for high-brightness HDR gaming. Whether you’re playing on an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, the S95B’s powerful color production delivers a fantastic experience. In fact, I might argue that HDR gaming benefits more from this TV’s particular abilities than any other content format. As an example, the brilliant forests and intense sunsets of Ghost of Tsushima on the PS5 were an absolute joy on the S95B, thanks to the improved saturation in greens, yellows, red, and oranges. A high-contrast game like Stray (which features bright neon lights nestled in stretches of yawning gray and black) looked spectacular, as well. The S95B features an improved version of Samsung’s Game Bar and is equipped with four HDMI 2.1 inputs, allowing for crisp 4K 120 Hz gaming with very minimal input lag (we tested around 9.1 to 9.2 milliseconds).

Samsung’s Tizen smart TV platform has had a big change this year. In 2021, the interface primarily existed as a row of apps along the bottom of the screen, though you could set it to full-screen mode if you wanted. In 2022, it’s mostly a full-screen experience, and that has made it a little more sluggish than it used to be (more on this below). While the new design has a bit more of a learning curve to get used to, it’s easy enough to find all the usual streaming suspects (Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video) in the Media menu, but you may have to install your favorites.

Where the new smart platform really differentiates itself is the Game menu, which collects all of the HDMI inputs associated with game consoles and provides ready access to cloud gaming services like Google Stadia and Xbox Game Pass. It also guides you through syncing controllers and headsets over Bluetooth. I was able to sync a controller with ease and jump back into a game I’d been playing on Game Pass, Far: Changing Tides. While the game was artifact- and buffer-free, it looked soft and unsharp, though still very playable. There’s also an Ambient menu for displaying images while the TV is off, something we saw on Samsung’s QLED TV lineup last year.

The S95B has an extremely thin profile from the side (imagine a stack of three or four credit cards) and is equipped with a handsome, weighted center stand that takes up minimal tabletop space. You’ll find its four HDMI inputs (and other ports) around the right side of the TV. Assembly is easy, but the plastic pieces meant to pop into place on the rear of the panel and stand (to cover the ports/cables and provide a form of cable management) are finicky, and I ended up leaving the cable cover off more often than not because it was so hard to get it to sit flush. The stand is very stable, however, and holds the panel at ample height to easily fit a soundbar underneath. The stand’s cable management is good overall and makes for a clean-looking TV on your tabletop, something Samsung typically excels at.

While the UK version of the S95B allegedly includes two remote controls, our 65-inch sample only included Samsung’s Eco Remote, a thin clicker that charges via sunlight or room lighting rather than using batteries (you can also charge over USB-C, if necessary). We found the Eco Remote to be easy to use. The channel input and menu buttons have been combined into a single button, and having to push a button and scroll up to access the quick settings menu was irritating at first but easy enough to get used to.

It’s a shame that the S95B is only available in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes. Many gamers may be angling for a smaller size (42 or 48 inches) for desktop gaming, while folks with home theaters may be acclimated to a 77-inch OLED screen and don’t want to downsize. If you’re in that camp, we’d direct you to the LG C2 Series.

The biggest picture-quality difference between the S95B and most other OLEDs is in its black-level integrity in a room that isn’t pitch black. The quantum-dot layer behind the glass is reactive to ambient light, which can cause the TV’s nominally perfect blacks to take on a slightly brightened appearance in certain room conditions. This isn’t ideal, but after using the TV for several weeks, I feel that this problem has been greatly exaggerated in other reviews. Rtings has stated that “to enjoy this TV to the fullest, you really need to be in a perfectly dark room,” but I strongly disagree. In fact, I think the S95B fares better in normally or brightly lit rooms than any OLED I’ve tested before. Still, to get the best contrast with darker films and TV shows, a completely dark room is always best.

Initially, my wife and I struggled mightily with getting the Tizen smart TV platform to cooperate. The platform was notably slower and more ponderous than it was last year, but recent firmware updates have eliminated the most egregious problems. At time of writing, Tizen could still stand to be a bit more responsive, but Samsung is clearly working to improve it, and it’s very palatable in its current form. This won’t matter if you plan to plug in a different media player anyway.

Every OLED TV uses a process called ABL (auto brightness limiting) to stave off issues with panel damage and burn-in, and to extend the life of the panel. This is a sudden on-screen adjustment where viewers might see the whole screen get a little brighter or darker. It can be distracting; fortunately, it’s a minor problem with the S95B. I only saw it occur occasionally, and the TV’s high brightness actually made the effect less noticeable most of the time—so most folks probably won’t see it happening.

Speaking of burn-in, we’ve seen questions and concerns about the Samsung’s potential for burn-in—which is a form of permanent image retention that can afflict any display, but OLED displays in particular. We can’t make any definitive statements about the S95B’s burn-in vulnerability without longer-term use and testing, but it’s been postulated that burn-in is less of a risk for QD-OLED models. We continue to believe that burn-in is not a major concern if you’re using your OLED TV with varied types of entertainment content. But if you’re someone who plays the same video game for hours per day, weeks on end, or you plan to use the TV as a more static computer monitor, LCD might be the safer choice. The S95B does include tools to mitigate burn-in, including a pixel refresher, a cell-cleaning process, and a screensaver that turns on very quickly when content is paused—but it’s still a fact of the technology that prospective buyers and current owners should be aware of.

Another reason to be wary of using the S95B as a computer monitor is that this TV has an unusual subpixel layout that can make high-density text (such as what you’ll see on websites) exhibit trace elements of “color fringing,” when pixels seem to bleed color into one another. It’s a minor problem but worth reporting if that’s your intended use case.

I noticed that my 65-inch S95B seemed prone to a small amount of panel warp. Our sample TV clearly wasn’t new and probably made the rounds through reviewers before getting to me, but there does appear to be a very slight curve through the metal of the uppermost bezel, so be careful when you’re first assembling it.

The fact that the S95B is a new panel design may give some shoppers pause. This TV had some performance issues when it first launched, but the amount of firmware updates Samsung has rolled out over the past few months proves that the company is listening attentively to buyer feedback and addressing issues. While most of these updates focused on fixing initial accuracy errors in Filmmaker Mode and adjusting the TV’s brightness numbers, we’re hoping that future updates remove some of the smart platform’s sluggishness. But overall, the S95B is an excellent performer, and we’d gladly deal with some minor flaws on a daily basis just to keep experiencing its gorgeous picture quality.

For all the new technologies that have come our way in recent times, it’s worth taking a minute to consider an old battle going on between two display types. Two display types that can be found across monitors, TVs, mobile phones, cameras and pretty much any other device that has a screen.

In one corner is LED (light-emitting diode). It’s the most common type of display on the market, however, it might be unfamiliar because there’s slight labelling confusion with LCD (liquid crystal display).

For display purposes the two are the same, and if you see a TV or smartphone that states it has an ‘LED’ screen, it’s an LCD. The LED part just refers to the lighting source, not the display itself.

In a nutshell, LED LCD screens use a backlight to illuminate their pixels, while OLED’s pixels produce their own light. You might hear OLED’s pixels called ‘self-emissive’, while LCD tech is ‘transmissive’.

The light of an OLED display can be controlled on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This sort of dexterity isn’t possible with an LED LCD – but there are drawbacks to this approach, which we’ll come to later.

In cheaper TVs and LCD-screen phones, LED LCD displays tend to use ‘edge lighting’, where LEDs sit to the side of the display, not behind it. The light from these LEDs is fired through a matrix that feeds it through the red, green and blue pixels and into our eyes.

LED LCD screens can go brighter than OLED. That’s a big deal in the TV world, but even more so for smartphones, which are often used outdoors and in bright sunlight.

Brightness is generally measured as ‘nits’ – roughly the light of a candle per square metre. Brightness is important when viewing content in ambient light or sunlight, but also for high dynamic range video. This applies more to TVs, but phones boast credible video performance, and so it matters in that market too. The higher the level of brightness, the greater the visual impact.

Take an LCD screen into a darkened room and you may notice that parts of a purely black image aren’t black, because you can still see the backlighting (or edge lighting) showing through.

You’ll often see a contrast ratio quoted in a product’s specification, particularly when it comes to TVs and monitors. This tells you how much brighter a display’s whites are compared to its blacks. A decent LCD screen might have a contrast ratio of 1,000:1, which means the whites are a thousand times brighter than the blacks.

Contrast on an OLED display is far higher. When an OLED screen goes black, its pixels produce no light whatsoever. That means an infinite contrast ratio, although how great it looks will depend on how bright the screen can go. In general, OLED screens are best suited for use in darker rooms, and this is certainly the case where TVs are concerned.

OLED panels enjoy excellent viewing angles, primarily because the technology is so thin, and the pixels are so close to the surface. You can walk around an OLED TV or spread out in different spots in your living room, and you won’t lose out on contrast. For phones, viewing angles are extra important because you don’t tend to hold your hand perfectly parallel to your face.

Viewing angles are generally worse in LCDs, but this varies hugely depending on the display technology used. And there are lots of different kinds of LCD panel.

Perhaps the most basic is twisted nematic (TN). This is the type used in budget computer monitors, cheaper laptops, and very low-cost phones, and it offers poor angled viewing. If you’ve ever noticed that your computer screen looks all shadowy from a certain angle, it’s more than likely it uses a twisted nematic panel.

Thankfully, a lot of LCD devices use IPS panels these days. This stands for ‘in-plane switching’ and it generally provides better colour performance and dramatically improved viewing angles.

IPS is used in most smartphones and tablets, plenty of computer monitors and lots of TVs. It’s important to note that IPS and LED LCD aren’t mutually exclusive; it’s just another bit of jargon to tack on. Beware of the marketing blurb and head straight to the spec sheet.

The latest LCD screens can produce fantastic natural-looking colours. However, as is the case with viewing angles, it depends on the specific technology used.

OLED’s colours have fewer issues with pop and vibrancy, but early OLED TVs and phones had problems reining in colours and keeping them realistic. These days, the situation is better, Panasonic’s flagship OLEDs are used in the grading of Hollywood films.

Where OLED struggles is in colour volume. That is, bright scenes may challenge an OLED panel’s ability to maintain levels of colour saturation. It’s a weakness that LCD-favouring manufacturers enjoy pointing out.

Both have been the subject of further advancements in recent years. For LCD there’s Quantum Dot and Mini LED. The former uses a quantum-dot screen with blue LEDs rather than white LEDs and ‘nanocrystals’ of various sizes to convert light into different colours by altering its wavelength. Several TV manufacturers have jumped onboard Quantum Dot technology, but the most popular has been Samsung’s QLED branded TVs.

Mini LED is another derivation of LED LCD panels, employing smaller-sized LEDs that can emit more light than standard versions, increasing brightness output of the TV. And as they are smaller, more can be fitted into a screen, leading to greater control over brightness and contrast. This type of TV is becoming more popular, though in the UK and Europe it’s still relatively expensive. You can read more about Mini LED and its advantages in our explainer.

OLED, meanwhile, hasn’t stood still either. LG is the biggest manufacturer of large-sized OLED panels and has produced panels branded as evo OLED that are brighter than older versions. It uses a different material for its blue OLED material layer within the panel (deuterium), which can last for longer and can have more electrical current passed through it, increasing the brightness of the screen, and elevating the colour volume (range of colours it can display).

Another development is the eagerly anticipated QD-OLED. This display technology merges Quantum Dot backlights with an OLED panel, increasing the brightness, colour accuracy and volume, while retaining OLED’s perfect blacks, infinite contrast and potentially even wider viewing angles, so viewers can spread out anywhere in a room and see pretty much the same image. Samsung and Sonyare the two companies launching QD-OLED TVs in 2022.

And for smartphones there’s been a move towards AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens for Android screens, while Apple has moved towards OLED for its smartphones and tried Mini LED with its iPad Pro. Technologies are consistently evolving with Superand Dynamic AMOLED versions available, more performance is being eked out.

While LED LCD has been around for much longer and is cheaper to make, manufacturers are beginning to move away from it, at least in the sense of the ‘standard’ LCD LED displays, opting to explore the likes of Mini LED and Quantum Dot variations.

OLED has gained momentum and become cheaper, with prices dipping well below the £1000 price point. OLED is much better than LED LCD at handling darkness and lighting precision, and offers much wider viewing angles, which is great for when large groups of people are watching TV. Refresh rates and motion processing are also better with OLED though there is the spectre of image retention.

If you’re dealing with a limited budget, whether you’re buying a phone, a monitor, a laptop or a TV, you’ll almost certainly end up with an LCD-based screen. OLED, meanwhile, incurs more of a premium but is getting cheaper, appearing in handheld gaming devices, laptops, some of the best smartphones as well as TVs

Which is better? Even if you eliminate money from the equation, it really comes down to personal taste. Neither OLED nor LCD LED is perfect. Some extol OLED’s skill in handling darkness, and its lighting precision. Others prefer LCD’s ability to go brighter and maintain colours at bright levels.

How do you decide? Stop reading this and go to a shop to check it out for yourself. While a shop floor isn’t the best environment in which to evaluate ultimate picture quality, it will at least provide an opportunity for you to realise your priorities. Whether you choose to side with LCD or OLED, you can take comfort in the fact that both technologies have matured considerably, making this is a safe time to invest.

Let’s say you’re in the market for the new TV, and you’re finally looking to make the jump to 4K. When you’re shopping around, you come across a puzzling situation: two brand new TVs, identical in size, but with two very different prices. One costs $500 while the other $2,000. What’s the deal? What does that extra money actually buy you, and do you need it?

If you have two 4Ks that are the same size and were made in the same year, but one costs significantly more than the other, it boils down to picture quality and specifically the technology being used to put the colors on the screen. All 4K TVs have the same number of pixels (3840 x 2160), but the difference in picture quality comes from how they are lit. The best 4K displays are the ones that have the most control over each individual pixel, to light them up in different colors or even turn them off completely without affecting adjacent pixels of a different color. That’s where display technologies come in, and when it comes to 4K TVs, you’re either talking about LCD or OLED.

Above you’ll see two 4K TVs that are the same size (55-inches) and from the same year (2019), but at very different prices. The Vizio M-Series Quantum, which is one of the best affordable 4K TVs, costs less than $500. The LG B Series, one of the nicer OLED TVs, is over $1,000 more expensive.

The lesser of the two displays is the LCD (liquid crystal display). LCD TVs control the brightness of their picture with an LED backlight that covers a lot more space than a single pixel. Instead, they control groups or clusters of pixels that are known as dimming zones. The more dimming zones an LCD TV has, the more control it has over the pixels and the better picture it’s going to be able to produce.

The ultimate dimming zone, however, is a single pixel, and that is what an OLED TV delivers. Each pixel on an OLED screen is its own backlight. The result is that OLED TVs are able to get brighter and darker while in close proximity to each other, which generates much better contrast. Additionally, OLED TVs are generally able to be thinner and lighter than LCD TVs because they don’t require an extra panel of back-lighting. The problem is OLED is a newer technology and it will be responsible for the bulk of the price differential between two otherwise identical-looking TVs. One of LG’s 65-inch entry-level 4K OLED TVs costs $2,300, for example, while one of the company’s 65-inch 4K LCD TVs costs $650.

It’s not just OLED or LCD though. More expensive LCD TVs will shore up their display technology weakness with other technologies, like a brighter backlight, or a larger number of smaller dimming zones. More expensive TVs will often also boast a higher refresh rate, the number of times per second that the screen updates what it is showing. Higher rates mean a higher price, but less motion blur. Higher-end TVs are also more likely to support high dynamic range (HDR) technologies, such as Dolby Vision and HDR10, which help create deeper blacks and more vivid colors on any display.

A lot of times the difference between a company’s entry-level 4K TVs and mid-range 4K TV, by the likes of TCL or Vizio, is the fact that the frame of the TVs is made of plastic instead of metal. Not only does a plastic frame not look as nice, but it’s also more susceptible to bumps and scratches whenever you happen to move it.

And while you’ll basically always be better off using a soundbar instead of your TV’s built-in speakers, some of the more expensive TVs might have slightly bigger speakers that get slightly louder, have better sound separation and might even support surround sound technologies, like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. But many TV manufacturers (such as TCL, Sony, Vizio, Samsung and LG) actually want you to buy a separate soundbar or speaker system because they make those as well. And for our money, that’s a good choice.

If there’s one rule in the TV world right now, it’s that OLED is king. Take the inky black levels of the best plasma televisions, mix in super wide viewing angles, and put it all in a gorgeously thin panel and you’ve got your typical OLED TV.

Unfortunately, like any new technology, OLED displays are more expensive than the LCDs that they"re attempting to replace. While the common wisdom has been that OLEDs will get cheaper eventually, "eventually" will be here sooner than you think.

So OLED is great, and it’s getting cheaper—but when will it be cheap? What’s the forecast, and when can regular people expect to be able to afford one?

We know: that’s still crazy expensive for most people. You can get a 55-inch 1080p LCD TV for around $600 and 4K LCD TVs aren’t much more. But don"t forget that the LG 55EG9100 vastly outperforms any other 1080p TV under $2,000. It’s that good.

The main reason that OLED TVs are so expensive is that they OLED is a young technology, and manufacturing OLED TVs is difficult. This is especially true of OLED panels large enough to be used in consumer TVs, which only LG Display currently makes. Samsung and Sony have both made OLED and AMOLED displays in the past, but they"re usually smaller and used in things like phones.

Pretend you are starting a pizza shop, but your oven keeps burning them. If you are burning 80% of your pizzas, you need to sell the good ones at a high enough price to make up for all the waste. Burn fewer pizzas and you can drop your prices.

While that sounds extreme, early OLED manufacturing was just that inefficient. Jerry Kang, a display analyst at market research firm IHS, says the yields on OLED TVs—especially 1080p models—has improved dramatically:

In 2013 the oxide TFT process used to make the first OLED panels for Full HD (FHD) TV displays was a new technology, and initially the yield rate was only 10%. Panel makers have since overcome the early issues, and OLED yield rates for FHD are now 90%.

Ultra HD (UHD) panels were only introduced at the end of 2014, and the yield rate was also extremely low at that time (5% to 10%)...Panel makers have been working on these problems, and the yield rate has since risen to 50%.​

Taking a look at LG"s 2016 TV lineup and it"s clear that OLED is still its top priority. But with 4K resolution, high dynamic range, and quantum dot all hitting the market this year, LG"s got to do more than just improve on OLED manufacturing yields.

LG"s flagship G6 series is easily the most impressive OLED TV we"ve seen yet, but all these new features are going to keep the price pretty high—though it"s not much more than the top TVs from Samsung and Sony.

Another positive sign? We’re seeing more companies buying OLED panels from LG to put in their TVs. For example, TV nerds lost their minds last year when it was announced that Panasonic would debut its first OLED TV,

The end result? OLED TVs will be affordable sooner than you"d think. They still have a long way to go to match LCD TV prices, but if you"re a fan of OLEDs there"s no doubt that things are heading in the right direction.
