Do you remember the (almost) full screen sized flicker free and ultra rapid gauge we designed in June? And this without using the built-in Gauge component? If not, it"s time to read this article first, to understand today"s improvements. The June 2022 version does its job perfectly, the needle movement is quick and smooth, and other components can be added close to the outer circle without flickering since there is no background which needs constantly to be redrawn. But there was a minor and only esthetic weak point: The needle was a 1px thin line, sometimes difficult to see. Thus, already a short time after publishing, some readers contacted me and asked if there were a way to make the needle thicker, at least 2 pixels.Recently, when playing with a ESP32 based NodeMCU 32S and especially with its WiFi configuration, I did as (I guess) everybody does: I loaded an example sketch to learn more about the Wifi library. When you set up the ESP32 as an access point, creating its own wireless network, everything is pretty straightforward. You can easily hard code the Wifi name (SSID) and the password. But what about the client mode ? Perhaps one needs to use it in different environments. And then, a hard coded network name and password are definitively not the best solution. Thus, I thought, why not use a Nextion HMI for a dynamic WiFi setup functionality?Although the Nextion MIDI I/O interface  has been primarily designed as an add-on for Nextion HMI screens to transform these in fully autonomous MIDI devices as shown in previous blog posts here, it is also of great use for any Arduino based electronic music project! Many MIDI projects for Arduino suffer from a lack good hardware support. There are sophisticated code, excellent libraries and an infinity of use cases, but afterwards, things tend not to work in a rather rough environment in the studio or on stage. That"s because two resistors and a few Dupont wires on a breadboard besides the Arduino are not really an interface which could drive your Synth, Sequencer, or Drum machine over a 5m long MIDI cable.First of all, let"s open a virtual bottle of Champaign - this is my 100st Sunday Blog post!!! Now, let"s celebrate this with a new functionality: Have your Nextion HMI computing square roots with just 21 lines of code and 5 integer variable components, everything nicely packed in a ready-to-use page template - the Nextion equivalent of a library as seen over the last weeks. The advantage is that you can add this function to a page by designing the latter by starting with importing the appropriate template and then customizing it as you would any other page of your project. And if your project doesn"t need it - let it away and save memory! In my humble opinion, that"s a way more interesting solution than requesting the integration of everything into the firmware, with all the runtime memory constraints.Did you ever see the need to increment or decrement values, for example on a settings screen? And no, there is NO need to add to the event code of each button! Only 4 invisible components and less than 20 lines of code are required to transform all buttons on a page into repeater buttons. That is so compact that we"ll pack these into a single page template and export it. From then on, if you need buttons with accelerated auto-repeat on a page, go to the page pane, but instead of adding a blank page, import the template and you are done. Automatically, without an additional line of code, all buttons will magically have the repeat functionality!Two weeks ago, we discussed a few password security strategies. While all the basic mechanisms have been explained and code examples have been shown, using these in your own project might seem difficult since there are so many places where code snippets were to add.  Thinking about that latter aspect and how to ease the re-utilization, I suddenly had an inspiration: Why not follow the example of the keyboard system pages which are automatically added to your project when you link a text or number component to one of the built-in keyboard screens?

Shanghai Animation Film Studio (simplified Chinese: 上海美术电影制片厂; traditional Chinese: 上海美術電影製片廠; pinyin: Shànghǎi Měishù Diànyǐng Zhìpiānchǎng) also known as SAFS (simplified Chinese: 美影厂; traditional Chinese: 美影廠; pinyin: Měi Yǐng Chǎng) is a Chinese animation studio based in Shanghai, China, as part of the Shanghai Film Group Corporation. Shanghai Animation Film Studio was officially established in April, 1957, led by pioneering animators and artists including Te Wei, and Wan Brothers. It has produced around 500 films with over 40,000 minutes of original animation data source, covering 80% of China"s domestic animation production.

In 1949, at the time the People"s of Republic China was established, the Ministry of Culture sent a group of young animators, including Te Wei (1915-2010), the caricaturist, and Jing Shi (1919-1997), the painter, to Changchun Film Studio, as known as Northeast Film Studio before 1946, to start an animation team. As Te Wei described, the pioneers had lack of knowledge and technique regarding animation, so at the time Te Wei led the team to study animation productions done by the Soviet Union.

In 1950, the animation team transferred to Shanghai, where advanced animating equipments and human resource were available, and it was expanded by the join of new young artists from Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Suzhou and other leading institutions. Meanwhile, as the political situation stabilized in China, the Wan Brothers, Wan Chaochen and Wan Laiming, the earliest Chinese animators, returned to Shanghai to join the group. In 1957, Shanghai Animation Film Studio was officially set up as an independent department under the Ministry of Culture. As the director and the head of the studio, Te Wei led over 200 workers at the time to create educational and entertaining animated films for children. While learning animation technique from overseas, the pioneers started to explore new methods to reflect Chinese cultural characteristics, including using puppet, paper-cutting, traditional Chinese art elements such as Beijing Opera masking.

The founding of Shanghai Animation Film studio was also promoted by the "Hundred Flowers Campaign" in 1956, in which the government of Communist Party encouraged the development and innovation of technology and art in China.

Premier Zhou Enlai said that "Animation films are rather outstanding with their special and unique style in the Chinese Film Industry."Wan Guchan, with young animator Hu Jinqing, and their crew developed a new animating technique, jianzhi, based on Chinese traditional paper-cuts and produced the first jianzhi style animation, Te Wei, inspired by the famous ink wash artist Qi Baishi, directed first ink-wash and brush-painting style animated film - Buffalo Boy and the Flute (1963). In the same period, Yu Zhenguang (1906-1991) directed first folded-paper animation, A Clever Duckling (1963), featuring a folk craft technique, zhezhi (also known as Japanese origami).

The most well-known animation produced at Shanghai Animation Film Studio is Peking opera"s military style) and the beautiful rich color palette. The movie was shown at the Locarno Film Festival in 1965 and won wide praise from international audience.

In this period, Shanghai Animation Film studio produced good amount of remarkable animated films in various forms including The adventures of The Little Fisherman (1959), The Spirit of Ginseng (1961), Red Army Bridge (1964), More or Less (1964) and so on. These films brought Chinese animation to the world stage at that time.

When Peking Television was launched on September 2, 1958, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio began producing animated TV commercials for various clients including Tsingtao Brewery, but the station stopped airing TVCs during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. However, it wasn"t until 1979, when the Shanghai Animation Film Studio resumed the production of animated TV commercials since the Chinese economic reform held by Deng Xiaoping from 1978 to 2013 including Coca-Cola (an American soft drink from Atlanta, Georgia which was unofficially sold in communist Mainland China from 1949 to 1979 before it became official).

The golden age ended with the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, which dealt the animation film industry a hard blow, and limited the productivity of the studio.

In 1984, Shanghai Animation Film Studio adjusted the leadership, Yan Dingxian as director, Te Wei as a consultant. The focus of this period was on a series of fine art films. For example, the first paper-cut series Calabash Brothers,The Dirty King"s Adventures, the animated series Shuke and Beta and The Rubik"s Cube Tower were also important works of this period. Subsequently, Zhou Keqin and Chang Guangxi successively held the post of factory director.

Since the 1985, Chinese animation films have enjoyed a difficult period, when Anime from Japan and the United States quickly took over the domestic market

In 1992, one of the first Western companies to come in contact with the studio was Prrfect Animation in San Francisco, United States. They attempted to bring efficiency, dependability and quality control to the studio.Shanghai Film Group Corporation.

In 2001, Music Up, the first animated series of campus music, opened a new chapter for domestic animation with its flying and unrestrained dream chasing stories and many original songs elaborately created. With the new strength of hu Yanbin, Inspiration Band and other bands, it set a record of super platinum album sales.

In 2004, the first installment of Big Ear Tutu animation series directed by Su Da was released and premiered on CCTV children"s channel. Over the course of five seasons, the 130-episode series has been a childhood companion for countless children. For many years in a row, it has been the champion of THE children"s Channel of CCTV and the four big cartoon TV stations in terms of audience rating, with over 2 billion online voD.

In 2007, the shadow produced large national epic cinema cartoon "Warriors", won the "12th China Hua Biao Award outstanding animated film", "changzhou best feature film award", and also won the "golden rooster award for best animated film" and "golden bear award" international - the best cinema cartoon animation works.

Wan brothers (Wan Laiming, 1900-1997, Wan Guchen, 1900-1995, Wan Chaochen, 1906-1992, Wan Dihuan, 1907 - ?), the founders and pioneers of the Chinese animation industry. Made the first Asian animation feature-length film, Princess with the Iron Fan (1939).

Chemicals leaking from millions of computer screens in homes, offices and schools could damage human health, according to research by Chinese scientists.

Chemistry professor Su Guanyong and colleagues at Nanjing University of Science and Technology in eastern Jiangsu province studied more than 360 types of chemicals used in computer and mobile phone screens and found that 87 of them could be a danger if they got into the environment.

Studies found that excessive radiation from screens could speed up the ageing of skin and blue light from diodes could harm the retina of the eye. "But nobody has looked beyond the brightness to unveil the dark secrets behind," Su said.

The lowest levels were found in a canteen, a dormitory and classrooms. Su said they were not sure where the drifting liquid crystals came from. Some screens might have been cracked or broken, he said. If a screen was left on for a long time, heat and radiation might cause liquid crystal to evaporate.

"Electric device recycling plants could be a major source of emissions, with broken screens dumped everywhere and little protection. This practice must stop," he said.
