With its top engine the Sorento can hustle quickly to highway speeds, but more ordinary base models and Hybrids have average acceleration. We give the Sorento a 6 for performance, with a point above average for its generally admirable ride quality.

So far, the base Sorento with the 191-hp, 2.5-liter inline-4 hasn’t been made available for test drives. We have tested both the hybrid and the turbo-4, and can recommend either of them over the base model, but with mixed impressions.

The 2.5-liter turbo-4 has an alert feel thanks to its 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, but its drive modes must be dialed out of Normal and into Sport to fully appreciate its ability. In Normal mode, the turbo-4’s companion transmission takes too long to recognize the need for merging or passing speed. Press the throttle and it pauses, thinks, then toggles down a gear or two. In Sport mode it lingers in lower gears longer and responds almost instantly to paddle shifts and moderate pedal pressure; it erases the CVT-like rubberband effect of Normal mode.

Acceleration’s brisk, but the Sorento weighs at least 3,979 pounds, and up to 4,065 pounds in top trims, with the added weight of all-wheel drive with torque-vectoring and center locking differential for optimum traction—coupled with all-season tires on wheels as large as 20 inches.

We like speed, but the Sorento Hybrid suits its mission better. The Hybrid generates middling acceleration and excellent fuel economy from a 1.6-liter turbo-4 paired to hybrid batteries and electric motors that make 227 hp. It’s paired to the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, with similar driving behavior, and a little more grumbling from under the hood while it churns out city fuel economy in the low 40-mpg range.

The coming plug-in hybrid Sorento may be the best choice of all, but we’ll need a test drive to see if its 13.8-kwh battery and 66.9-kw electric motor can deliver on a promised 30 miles of all-electric driving.

Where the Sorento earns unqualified praise is its ride. Whether it’s shod with mild-mannered 17-inch wheels on the Hybrid or 20-inchers on the SX X-Line, the Sorento’s strut and multi-link suspension has been tuned for good compliance, with a fair amount of suspension noise. It’s better at quelling high-speed, long-duration ride motions than it is at smothering low-speed obstacles like potholes, but those are observations, not quibbles. Better steering feel would be nice, but the Sorento’s steering weight and precise response works well enough for the kind of driving for which it’s tailored.

Standard 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder (191 HP and 182 LB-FT of torque), available 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder Turbo (281 HP and 311 LB-FT of torque), or optional 1.6-liter GDI 4-cylinder Turbo Hybrid with 44 kW electric motor (estimated 39 MPG city / 35 highway / 37 combined**)

Now in its fourth generation, the award-winning Kia Sorento has been completely redesigned from the ground up. As one of the best-selling vehicles in the Kia lineup, the Sorento is now more powerful, more attractive, better engineered, and more technologically advanced than ever before. The Sorento is available with three distinct powertrains including a standard 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder, available 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder Turbo, and an impressive turbo hybrid variant.

The bold look of the Kia Sorento is characterized by sharp, modern lines and accented with high-tech details. Complementing its eye-catching exterior appearance is a totally reimagined interior that strikes a balance between useful ergonomics and upscale comfort. All Sorento models come standard with a comprehensive collection of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) to keep you and your loved ones protected from the unexpected. Proudly assembled in West Point, Georgia -- the Kia Sorento is ready to challenge the competition for the top position among the midsize SUV segment.

"As is Kia"s MO, the Sorento comes abundantly equipped, offering more of almost everything and making a compelling feature-per-dollar case. Today"s Sorento is outfitted with more standard safety tech, more power from the base engine, more efficiency in every configuration, more engine options, and more interior space." -- MotorTrend

"The overriding design theme for the Kia Sorento is “Refined Boldness,” according to Kia. We’d say the interior of this SUV really drives home that ethos. This midsize 3-row SUV has a nicely-designed interior that keeps getting better as you go up the trim levels." -- Kelley Blue Book

Following a complete model refresh last year, the Kia Sorento returns for 2022 with even more key updates and revisions to its successful formula. First, S trim levels and above all now come standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and telematics. Additionally, drivers can now choose from three newly-available trim levels -- X-Line S, X-Line EX, and X-Line SX Prestige. These new trims feature rugged exterior design cues and other premium features. Finally, Wolf Grey makes its debut as a new exterior color choice on the 2022 Kia Sorento.

A true departure from the rounded curves of the prior generation, the Kia Sorento sports a more upright appearance thanks to chiseled lines and aggressive styling cues. Examples of style enhancements include the modernized Kia “tiger nose” front fascia, standard LED headlamps with optional signature LED forward lighting, distinctive dynamic wave shape at the base of the C pillar, and a total of six different alloy wheel designs ranging from 17-inches to 20-inches. The 3rd generation “N3” platform is lighter, stronger, and more flexible than previous models. This has resulted in an increased wheelbase by nearly 1.4 inches and overall weight reduction by 3.1% (119 pounds).

The Kia Sorento offers buyers their choice of three individual powertrains designed to suit virtually any type of driving style. Standard power comes in the form of a 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder producing 191 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Craving more muscle? Step up to the available 2.5-liter GDI 4-cylinder Turbo to receive a total of 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft torque along with a segment-exclusive 8-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. If efficiency is what you’re after, the optional 1.6-liter GDI 4-cylinder Turbo Hybrid with 44 kW electric motor delivers up to an EPA-estimated 39 city / 35 highway / 37 combined MPG. Gasoline engines are available with an AWD system featuring torque-vectoring and a center-locking differential.

Complementing its bold exterior, the premium interior of the Kia Sorento is an exhibition of exceptional design and ergonomics. The Kia N3 platform has allowed the Sorento to offer best-in-class front/rear legroom and overall interior passenger volume. Highlights of the available interior amenities include bright satin finishes, available metal texture inlays or open-pore wood inlays, and an optional leather embossed quilt pattern on models equipped with leather upholstery. Select the Bose Premium sound system available with 12 high-performance speakers for a truly remarkable listening experience inside the Kia Sorento.

Technology remains a strength of the Kia Sorento thanks to a full suite of connectivity options and driver-assist features. The optional 12.3-inch full digital meter cluster projets all important drive information within sight of the driver. Great for backing in or out of a tight space, the available Blind View Monitor projects live video view of adjacent lanes in the instrument cluster and activated via the turn signal. Optional UVO link telematics features include Connected Routing, Connected Weather, Smart Speaker Integration, and Last Mile Navigation. In total, there are 16 available or standard Kia Drive Wise Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). No other midsize crossover is able to match the comprehensive collection of technology and safety features found on the Kia Sorento.

The redesigned Sorento has more technology and active safety features than before, but it’s not as well-rounded as the previous generation. Though quicker and more fuel-efficient, it has regressed in terms of ride comfort and overall refinement compared with the outgoing model. As such, it remains stuck in the middle of the pack of midsized three-row SUVs that have approachable prices.

The Sorento hybrid is pleasantly powerful, beyond an initial delay off the line, and returned 28 mpg overall—impressive for a three-row SUV but still lags the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, let alone the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The plug-in hybrid has a 32 miles of electric range if using a light foot.

The mid-size crossover and SUV segment is swollen with entries, but the three-row Kia Sorento is one worth considering. With seating for up to seven passengers, the Sorento offers the utility of the larger V-6-powered Telluride, with better fuel economy and multiple powertrain configurations. The front-drive SUV comes standard with a 191-hp inline-four with an eight-speed automatic transmission; however, we think buyers ought to consider adding all-wheel drive and upgrading to the Sorento"s 281-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Kia also offers the Sorento with a 227-hp hybrid powertrain that returns an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined and a 261-hp plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup with an estimated 32 miles of battery-electric driving range. The Sorento offers plentiful passenger space for its size, and even includes available niceties such as heated and cooled front and second-row seating.

The Sorento pulls into 2023 without any major changes to its massive lineup. All models now come standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert while the S trim now comes with a wireless smartphone charging pad. The mid-range EX trim gets an eight-way power-adjustable passenger"s seat and a frameless rearview mirror; the upscale SX now comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, power-folding exterior mirrors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Kia has discontinued the Sorento Hybrid S base model and added a fully loaded Hybrid SX-P trim with standard all-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, leather seating, and captain"s chairs for the second row. The Hybrid EX gets a little love too, with an eight-way power front-passenger seat and a frameless rearview mirror. For 2023, the Sorento PHEV comes strictly in SX-Prestige trim. The PHEV SX-Prestige has all the fixings, including retractable rear-door sunshades, a 115-volt inverter, and an estimated 32 miles of electric driving range.

We like the EX hybrid. It"s pricier than the base Sorento, but it comes standard with the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that"s more powerful than the base nonhybrid offering. It also has nicer amenities than the trims below it, including leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, remote start, and snazzier styling such as 17-inch wheels and black exterior accents.

The Sorento has a wide selection of engine options and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. A 191-hp 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine is standard and a 281-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is available too. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the hybrid model uses a six-speed automatic. We drove a top-of-the-line SX trim with the turbo four and appreciated its noticeable thrust, but we wish the powertrain felt more responsive off the line. The same model delivered poised handling, a nicely isolated ride, and firm brake-pedal feedback. The eco-friendly Sorento hybrid features a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor that work together to generate 227 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive Sorento plug-in hybrid features the same engine and transmission as the lesser hybrid, but in this application, the powertrain makes a combined 261 horsepower courtesy of a more powerful electric motor.

Although the Kia Sorento won"t move mountains, its marginal towing capacity could prove helpful in some situations. The maximum towing capacity for the Sorento is 3500 pounds when equipped with the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the optional towing package. Avoid the towing package or opt for the base naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and that figure falls to 2000 pounds. Though the Sorento can"t match the V-6-powered Kia Telluride"s 5000-pound tow rating, it still can haul a couple of jet skis or small farm animals—depending on your lifestyle.

The EPA estimates the Sorento returns up to 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway when equipped with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The more powerful turbocharged 2.5-liter four nets EPA ratings of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The hybrid Sorento HEV is the most fuel-efficient with estimates of 39 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid has a combined rating of 79 MPGe. Drive the Sorento PHEV in its Hybrid mode and the plug-in model earns EPA-estimated fuel economy figures of 35 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. That said, the PHEV can travel up to a manufacturer-estimated 32 miles on electricity alone with a full charge of its battery. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, a Sorento EX Hybrid achieved 31 mpg—4 mpg short of its EPA estimate. The Sorento PHEV returned 25 mpg while in Hybrid mode, 8 mpg off its EPA estimate. For more information about the Sorento"s fuel economy, visit the EPA"s website.

Inside, the Sorento has an attractive layout, nice materials, and solid build quality. The dashboard can be outfitted with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The rest of the design blends rhombus-shaped air vents integrated ambient lighting and intricately stitched surfaces on the door panels and seat inserts. A variety of cubby storage spots and cupholders also fill out the console. Along with a standard third row, its second-row bench can be swapped for a pair of captain"s chairs. Compared with the larger Telluride, the Sorento"s far-back seats aren"t comfortable for adults, and we only managed to fit two carry-on suitcases in the cargo area—two fewer than the Telluride.

The Sorento comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen or an optional 10.3-inch touchscreen. A wireless charging pad is optional, as is a 12-speaker Bose sound system. A rear-seat entertainment system with a touchscreen mounted on the back of each front seat is also optional.

The Sorento enjoys a roster of standard and optional driver-assistance technology. For more information about the Kia"s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking

The Telluride deserved praise for offering a premium interior at mainstream prices, and it looks the Sorento will do the same, and then some - Carbuzz.com

Offering a three-row set-up and 7 seats, seven people can practically fit inside the 2022 Kia Sorento. The AC vents are rhombus in shape and have a chrome outline, adding to the overall feel of the vehicle. The seats offer excellent stitching with the higher trims offering leather. The dashboard of the Sorento looks more modern with bigger screens and ambient lighting with 64 colors. Buttons and dials are also placed ergonomically and within the reach of the driver. The front seats get a 6-way manual adjustment with a 4-way adjustable passenger’s seat.

The higher trims will also include heated and cooled seats as standard with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat with 2-way lumbar support and an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. The second row includes captain seats with armrests and the third row will have seats for up to three people. Spacing is also not an issue for the first two rows, while the rear row will be a little cramped for taller adults.

The front and second-row are spacious for all the SUVs, but only the Sorento comes with a third row. For cargo, the Sorento will offer 12.6 cubic feet of cargo storage when the rear seats are up. However, they can easily be folded down with the push of a button, and then you will get more than 45 cubic feet of cargo storage. The second row can also be folded to offer more than 70 cubic feet of cargo storage, which should be more than enough for anyone. There are also tons of small-item storage solutions inside the cabin.

For infotainment, you get an 8” screen as standard but you can upgrade to the 10.3” screen too. You also get a 12.3” instrument cluster, although that is preserved for just the higher SX-Prestige and Prestige X-Line trims. On the higher trims, you get all the goodies such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM Radio, HD Radio, navigation, wireless phone charger, USB ports for all three rows, etc. And you can also add a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system.
