Also, it may be the case that the boards are flashed with the appropriate firmware for the particular panel. So I would recommend not to gamble and get the driver board that exactly matches the model number.

I found an old adapter from a Wi-Fi access-point (long gone) which is rated for just 0.5A. It did power both the board and the screen perfectly. It worked with both the Macbook display as the Dell display so it doesn"t seem to be a fluke.

The hardest part of this proces (not pictured) was switching the on-screen-display from Chinese (which I don"t master) to English. But there is more work ahead.

At this point we end up with just a fragile LCD panel connected to a driver board through a bunch of wires. The whole setup is just an unpractical mess. There are at least two things left to do:

Most on-line retailers have no idea what driver and inverter a particular LCD panel requires. They expect you to know what exactly you are looking for. (Which is probably right, from a technical point of view, but they lose a lot of business by not being able to help non-LCD-specialist customers.) Since I know next to nothing about LCD panels I was looking for a retailer who could provide me with a kit specific to my LCD panel based on the model number of my LCD panel (which is always clearly printed on the back of the LCD panel).

After just a few e-mails I was ready to order not one but two kits for two of my LCD panels to give them a try. I have many more LCDs to salvage this way and if this method works out I will order more kits from the same seller, for sure, won’t bother experimenting with other sellers.

Each LCD panel requires a specific set of driver and inverter modules. These modules look a bit differently for each, however, once you have the right kit for your LCD panel in your hands, figuring them out is pretty straightforward.

Inverter: this produces the high voltage needed for the LCD backlight. You are not supposed to touch it while in use. It comes in protective plastic, so it’s really difficult to get electrocuted…

The pictures following come mixed from the two LCD panels I got – the steps for both (and probably most LCD panels) are identical though, and only the used kits are different.

Once there is only one pair of (usually red and white) cable sticking out of the LCD panel’s side and nothing else, it is probably ready to receive the new inverter and driver boards.

First attach the connector from the driver board. Pin #1 is marked on both the connector and the receptacle, but neither is very visible, so you have to be alert. Orientation of the connector is critical. Attaching the connector the wrong way almost certainly guarantees to kill the LCD panel. The receptacle may break as well, if a connector is forced into it the wrong way.

Once everything checks out, connect a supported video source and a power supply to the driver board. It is recommended to use a high quality power supply of 12V DC with a minimum of 4A rating to get the screen going. The same seller sells suitable power supplies, but I happened to have a couple of 12V 15A power supplies which I could use to test these setups.

These cheap driver / inverter board combos are a great way to give your old LCD screens a new life. They come in many flavours allowing you to use a wide range of resolutions, screen sizes, and video sources.

First off there is no interface on the RPi that will match that of your LCD. Like yours, TFT-LCD modules have FPC connectors of 30+ pins sometimes upwards to 60 and that really all depends on the manufacturer.

Each of these pins need a specific signal in order for the LCD to work, many for 8-bit RGB data signal, some for synchronization clocks of various sorts, Voltage inputs, grounds, etc.

The only way of knowing which pin is what is to find out who manufactured that LCD-TFT module, then go to their website and download a PDF datasheet for it, or request one through their customer service.

Some independant companies however, do manufacture driver boards for LCD"s that will accept standardized signal input like RCA, VGA, HDMI etc. and will output to a FPC port specifically the interface your LCD-TFT needs, but the disadvantage is these are usually bulky (RPi size-ish), pricey ($20+) and relatively power hungry (probably draws nearly as much as the Pi itself).

Lastly, a 2,5" screen will present some apparent limitations for you,as it is a very small screen with low res, you will get very poor usability (pretty much impossible to navigate any OS, graphical or text based).

Get the model number of the LCD screen and search ebay and see if you can find an interface board that will work. You may need to contact the seller(s) directly.

The Display interface connector on the Pi is for the proper Raspberry Pi LCD Touch Screen. It is not a magical "connect to any random LCD screen that someone finds down the back of the sofa" connector.

Different LCD panels have different interfaces. Some use LVDS, some use DPI, some use proprietary interfaces. Even if you get the right one of those (DPI) for the Pi connector, the signals used have to be the right ones and there have to be all sorts of drivers written to handle that specific hardware.
