I have always been interested in a GoPro camera, but the darn things are just so expensive. I saw the GoPro Hero plus on eBay just before we went on a Caribbean vacation. We had plans to go snorkeling and I wanted a camera to take underwater pictures. Usually we use the waterproof 35mm disposable cameras, but the pictures never turn out. I did a little research on the camera. For a beginner camera, it had all the features I would need to take pictures, video, and then be able to review the footage using my phone. I picked up the camera for a song, and bought 2 of 64GB memory cards. Once I got it, I took some still shots and some video. I had to play around with the camera a bit to understand all if its functions. I downloaded the GoPro app to my phone and linked to the Hero Plus to see the pics and video. The quality was very good. We bought an extendable selfie-stick to put the camera on, and we were set for vacation. While on vacation we went snorkeling several times. I got lots of video footage. The camera worked well underwater. The lighting was great and the colors show with vibrance. I took many still shots that turned out great. I am very happy with the camera and look forward to using it more when we off-road and ride our ATVs.

The Hero+ LCD"s price, on the other hand, does not say "entry level." At $300 in the US and £250 and AU$430 in the UK and Australia, respectively, this is a somewhat pricey camera for the category given what it can do. The $130 (£100, AU$169) Hero model is truly entry level in price and features. That"s a considerable price gap between it and the Hero+ LCD.

That is, as long as you"re willing to put up with the rest of the Hero+ LCD"s design. Like the Hero, this camera is permanently in its rugged housing. Some might find this to be a plus since it means the camera can"t fall out and is always protected. However, since you can"t pull the camera out, if you damage the housing you"re not easily swapping it for a new one. While it can certainly handle a lot of abuse, if you manage to scratch the lens glass, you"re stuck.

With its standard solid plastic backdoor, the housing is waterproof to 131 feet (40 meters). There is also a waterproof touch backdoor that"s good down to 10 feet (3 meters) as well as a skeleton door that lets more sound reach the built-in mic. External mics, by the way, are not supported on this model.

On its own, the video from the Hero+ LCD is very good and stands up to other models priced around $300 such as the Drift Ghost-S and Replay XD Prime X, though only the former has a live-view screen. Sony"s Action Cam Mini with its Live-View Remote is another option and is better in image quality and features, though it"s not as easy to use.

For casual viewing on a smartphone or tablet and posting to YouTube, you likely won"t be disappointed with what you get from the Hero+ LCD. As with most cameras in this category, when viewed at larger sizes you"ll see compression and motion artifacts and details are pretty soft and mushy. These things only get more pronounced when shooting in low light.

It"s pricey for its shooting options and performance, but the GoPro Hero+ LCD is also one of the few action cameras available with a built-in live-view screen. That"s a feature that"s tough to beat, especially if you"re looking to simplify your shooting experience.

The new battery and cable hatches are indeed a bit tougher on the fingers to open, but they are now watertight. The entire camera is now more drop-proof and crash-proof than ever before. With a waterproof rating of 33 ft (10m) in the nude and a Super Suit rating of 196ft (60m) this is indeed the best GoPro ever made for underwater use.The GoPro HERO5 Black is the choice for scuba divers as the optional GoPro HERO5 Super Suit provides depths up to 196FT (60M). The smaller GoPro HERO5 Session does not have an LCD screen and is only waterproof to 33FT (10M).RAW and WDR Photo Modes - Cleaner Corrections in Post Raw file capability is a huge bonus for GoPro photographers. With earlier GoPro cameras we captured photos where the background was too bright or the auto white balance was too green. Since the photos were JPEGs they would quickly fall apart with editing in post. The GoPro HERO5 Black now has RAW photo capabilities that allow stronger image corrections with a much cleaner result. Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) mode helps correct for bright backgrounds in camera further streamlining your workflow. Image Stabilization - Might Save Your Friendships Nothing is worse than making your friends seasick with your wobbly video. The HERO5"s new image stabilization feature will smooth out the up and down bumps producing a much more watchable video. In our tests, we found it does not correct the left and right twist motions common to pole users, but will have a huge impact on the amount of watchable footage in the future. Image stabilization does not work in 4K, but does work in 2.7K and lower resolutions. While it"s not the preferred optical stabilization on higher end cameras, the HERO5"s digital stabilization looks great in our tests. One Press Quickcapture - Less Fiddling and Longer Battery Life If you"re new to GoPro this might not seem like a big feature, but some of us consider it a godsend. As underwater photographers we"re always trying to save batteries by minimizing power-on time. Older GoPros required a two button press to power on and start recording or a menu setting that typically started recording when you really just wanted to turn on the camera. With the GoPro HERO5 Black you can turn on the camera with the side button for traditional use or even better tap the top button for Quickcapture mode. A top button Quickcapture press will automatically turn the camera on and begin recording. A second top button press will stop recording and automatically power the camera off. This is a very cool feature to minimize shutter response time while maximizing battery life. Exposure Lock - For Use On Land Tap and hold on the touch display until you see brackets in the corner of the screen. When you release your tap, a spot exposure box will appear on screen. You can position this box to an over or under exposed area to dial in a better exposure. Further, a pulldown menu on the bottom of the screen will allow you to lock exposure. This is an awesome feature for land use, but unfortunately not available when your camera is wearing its Super Suit. New Lower Price - Includes LCD The GoPro HERO5 Black boasts the feature set & price we had hoped for with the HERO4. The $399 price tag includes the built-in LCD back and is waterproof for snorkeling. For full diving use, the new $49.99 Super Suit is all you really need other than a spare battery and micro SD card. The FLIP10 Filters and Macro Lenses will actually work on the GoPro HERO5 Supersuit, but require DIY shims. The new FLIP10 is now shipping.Hack a FLIP4 to Fit a HERO5? If you"re like us, you"d like to dive a HERO5 tomorrow. The lens port of the new GoPro HERO5 Super Suit (Dive housing) is slightly smaller than the Hero 4 dive housing. For our underwater tests, we simply used a few 0.35mm thick stickers to shim out the FLIP4 frame. Unfortunately, the FLIP4 frame is also a little too thick and could cause vignetting (dark corners) in the edges of superwide shots. If you"re down with DIY, you"ll see it"s an easy hack, but the new FLIP10 will fit like a glove and will come with a new set of filters. MACROMATE MINI Works Great on HERO5 The wildly popular +15 MACROMATE MINI lens looks even sharper on the HERO5 and offers an increased depth of field over the HERO4. If you already own a +15 MACROMATE MINI lens, simply use the HERO4 focus position for great results. You can"t use the touch display underwater. Watch this video to discover the secret button menu that allows you to change shooting settings even with the Super Suit.Switching from Macro to Wide Angle? - Use the Secret Button Menu! We"ll it"s not really a secret menu, but we overlooked this feature on the latest firmware update. When using the GoPro HERO5 Black in a Super Suit for diving, you can"t access the touch display to change shooting settings. Updating your camera with the latest firmware will allow you to access shooting settings underwater. While holding the side button down, click the top button quickly and a menu will pop-up on the front LCD screen. This is a critical feature when switching from Narrow FOV for macro and back to Wide FOV for normal shooting. It"s also handy if you overlooked a shooting setting prior to a dive. However, you can"t reformat the card or access other preferences, so make sure you remember to format before the dive. Also, don"t hold the side button down for more than two seconds or you"ll power down the camera accidentally. GoPro has introduced the Hero+ LCD camera, sharing many features with the entry-level Hero with the addition of a touchscreen. The Hero+ LCD is waterproof to depths up to 40m/131 ft, and adds both Bluetooth and integrated Wi-F with support for the Android and iOS GoPro App. Videos can be recorded at up to 1080p/60, and 8MP still image capture is offered.

The Hero+ LCD"s features include HiLight Tagging for marking notable moments while recording or playing back footage, as well as in-camera video trimming for rapid editing and sharing without the use of a computer. Content can be shared directly to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Like the Hero, the Hero+ LCD offers a QuikCapture setting, allowing the user to power the device on and start recording with one button press. The battery allows for about two hours of recording per charge; microSD cards up to 64GB are supported.

The Hero+ LCD will launch in the United States at retailers and online on June 7 for $299.99 USD. The camera will then go on sale internationally on July 12.

GoPro announced a quadcopter droneand two separate virtual reality camera rigs in the span of less than 24 hours last week. This week? It’s back to action cameras. Today GoPro has announced the Hero+ LCD, a new low-end option in the Hero line of action cameras. The camera goes on sale this Sunday, June 7th, and retails for $299.

The Hero+ LCD isn’t going to wow users with the ability to shoot extreme slow motion or 4K footage, but the specs are slightly better than what’s found on the relative bargain bin $129 Hero. The new camera shoots video up to a resolution of 1080p at 60 frames per second and photos at 8MP, and has an LCD touchscreen on the back — all improvements on the entry-level version. The rest is basically the same: it’s waterproof up to 40m (131’), has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and supports microSD cards up to 64GB.

While the price isn’t necessarily cheap, it fills the one obvious hole in GoPro’s line of products. With the Hero+ LCD, GoPro now sells its Hero4 line of cameras at prices of $129, $299, $399, and $499. Companies like Sony have tried competing with GoPro at the high end to mild success, but the best weapon for the likes of Garmin, Xiaomi, and even HTC, has been price — until now.
